Nik

ok, i really want to buy Logic Pro 9 for my mac to do recording and such, but i know i dont have enough memory on my mac to instal it because i only have the 64GB mac. if there anyway to instal Logic Pro 9 onto my 500GB portable hard drive instead of my macs hard drive? i dont want to spend $200.00 and then realize i cant install it.

Answer
Logic Pro 9 comes with huge collections of libraries, which means program itself isn't that big; around 1 GB or less.

Other than that you can pretty much install on an external drive if you have any.
If you still don't own please make sure you buy one with:

SATA or eSata port - if your Mac supports those connection or you have enough money to get PCI cards for the port. Second choice would be Firewire 800 then USB2. and it also depends on what kind of audio interface you are using.

7200RPM or more; no 5400RPM
which means 2.5 is not recommended - it limits number of the samples you can play simultaneously.
but if you think you won't max out the spec you can go for it.

plan accordingly

Ticking noise made by portable hard drive?

Johan Jivm

I have a 500gb portable hard drive which for some reason is making a ticking noise every one or two seconds. I plug it in to my computer, and it can't be located anywhere but I do hear a ticking noise every second. So is there any chance of me fixing the hard drive at all and if so how??? Many thanks.

Answer
Obviously it might be faulty/damage. Just bring it the the nearest repair computer station maybe they can do something about it.

portable hard drive 60 image

toddrick

I don't want to do anything illegal just save my dvds to my drive. My dvd collection is getting beat up but also because of newer technology it is just easier to stream to my tv than deal with the discs and players.

Answer
heres a list of things you need

DVDFab: Use this tool to rip a complete copy of your dvds
Cost:FREE

DVDShrink:Use this tool to shrink your dvd backups down to 4GB. You can also choose to remove Opening trailers, Language options and Special Features.
Cost: FREE

ImgBurn: Since you enjoy watching your movies without the use of the disc this program creates 1 easy video file for your back up.

Suggested Purchases

Portable Hard Drive: look into investion into one of these, depending on you collection and how big it is consider something in the range of 250GB and up.
Cost: $50 and Up (worth it)

DVD Upconvertor with USB Option: This is perfect for someone in your position. You can take a portable hard drive and connect it directly to an upconvertor using the USB option and watch your movies directly from the hard drive.
Cost: $60 and up (worth it)

I got the new slim Xbox 360 for christmas which means I never play the original one anymore. This may be a stupid question but I'm just wondering if anyone knows a way of turning the old hard drive into a Portable hard drive for my computer
Who ever is the first person to give me a REAL ANSWER i'll vote the best answer

Answer
I'm not sure if you can turn a old hard drive into a portable one for your computer, but there is another option. You can buy a Xbox 360 USB hard drive. This is pretty much your only option unless you are VERY tech savvy (s-a-v-v-y) and you can re- arrange the components so that you can use it as a computer hard drive. So yeah.
The Xbox 360 flash drive is available with 8GB memory for ~$30.
You can get the 16GB version for ~$55.
Check at amazon for price comparisons. Actually, let me just give you the link:
http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-Flash-SanDisk-SDCZGXB-016G-A11/dp/B003EV7ED8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1300813571&sr=8-1

I hope this helped!

Can someone recommend a dell cpu model that is built in to handle 2 monitors?

sk8r_punk

I'd love a 24" to 20" monitors. And I want this cpu to be 500 gb hard drive and 4 or 6 gb memory. and if possible with a HD 7770 video card or HD6850. Thanks.

Answer
The misconception of the term CPU aside, a couple of pointers that hopefully will help you make the right decision:

1. Just about every laptop (portable computer) nowadays has a port to which you can attach an external monitor. So don't worry about any specific model numbers.

2. The specifications you mention sound pretty good and all round. So what you need to do is determine how much money you want to spend on a computer, and then buy one with these specifications, which price comes closest to your budget.

3. Stay away from Dell, Packard Bell and Fujitsu. These brands offer computers for very attractive prices, but the quality / price ratio is not good. Do yourself a favor, and go for a brand like Lenovo, HP, or Acer.
If you doubt this point, just take a look at yahoo answers, and see how many problems are related to Dell computers in comparison to the other three.

Can you install a program on a external hard drive?

No

Ok, so I am going on a holiday but I can't bring my computer, however I will have access to a computer there but I am not allowed to install anything on it (and no I cant install and then erase when I go back). So I was thinking to install programs I need on my external hard drive (1 terabyte), but idk if that is possible..I know it would prolly work much much slower...idk...is it possible at all?

P.S. and no it can't wait till I get back...I got work to do and it just can't wait.

Answer
well that's a reality that you really can't install any software on external hard drive without any processor or ram
but your problem can be solved my a mean .I really don't have any idea about which kind of software do you use on your pc but if you use simple audio video ,office ,photo picture editing software you can take them all you had to do is to download the PORTABLE version of them mostly software companies provide these version of software
download it (extract if needed to be ) after this keep the setup folder in your hard disk and now if you open the setup folder you find a program file of your software also you can keep offline installer or updates if needed .
for example i use handbrake but if i don't want it to install on my pc i can download a portable version from site now i can access it any where any time only i had to keep the setup file

hence problem solved (no need of installing software just use them with a click )
thanks and enjoy your holiday !!!!

Should I buy a new external hard drive with the new Thunderbolt technology?

talk2mejjv

I just bought a Macbook Pro with Thunderbolt technology. What would be the best external hard drive to buy that will be optimized by using this new port?

Answer
There are not any Thunderbolt external drives available yet. My rule of thumb is to wait at least 6 months when new tech comes out. This gives peripheral manufacturers time to gear up and the competition lowers prices. La Cie announced they will have a dual SSD Thunderbolt drive available this summer, I bet it goes for at least $1,000. At the moment, the Thunderbolt port doesn't really accomplish much besides shrink your wallet with no devices yet available. I'll consider a new MBP in September.

Justin

I have found nearly no limit online for encrypting my portable hard drives, USB flash drives, laptops, and desktops. Even cell phones, including those running Android with versions as old as 2.3 (Gingerbread). Strangely absent from the list, the Kindle Fire. Has anyone found a quick, fairly simple way to encrypt the entirety of my Kindle Fire (personal data, apps, settings, etc)? I do almost all of my work "in the cloud," so formatting is no problem for me. Any advice is welcome, good advice is deeply appreciated :-]

Kindle Fire Extra Memory?

Marshall

The Kindle Fire is a nice tablet and has every function I could ever need EXCEPT one; there is no slot for extra memory. Although the Kindle Fire has an Amazon Cloud service, it will only work for Amazon content, and you can't connect unless you have Wifi.
However, upon reading, I noted that the Fire has a microUSB port that allows it to connect to a computer. Through this connection, you can load user-generated files such as apps, movies, music and more. When I thought about it, I noticed that this essentially turns your computer into extra memory space.

My question is this; is there any sort of hard drive or other portable memory device that connects to microUSB? And if there is, could it be used as extra memory for the Fire?

Answer
Hi, Marshall, you cannot attach any extra devices to USB port on Kindle Fire. Looking at the tablets people always confuse memory (RAM) of the device that helps it operate quicker and smoother by loading apps and web pages into memory and content space that is used for storing apps, videos, files, etc. Neither of those "memories" can be extra added to Kindle Fire as RAM is not expandable on tablets while content space needs microSD slot to be expanded and it's not present on Kindle Fire.
I'd recommend you to take a look at the new Nook Tablet that had been getting rave pro reviews on the web and it is the best device in it's class - much better than Kindle Fire. It's got Netflix, Hulu, Pandora, Angry Brids, etc., the best battery life, the best screen, double the RAM and space for apps/photoes/movies, microSD slot and a microphone for Skype, and much zippier performance during video playback and apps usage than choppy/laggy act of Kindle Fire according to many user reviews. Also, many Kindle Fire units have faulty Wi-Fi and people have a lot of issues connecting to internet according to many user reviews. Amazon's own web site has hundreds of reviews of Kindle Fire's new owners that gave it 1 or 2 star reviews because of choppy/laggy experience they got from this underpowered device.

I just got a new dell xps and it is great, you should look at the dell xps l502x its got:

15.6" FHD B+RGLED True-Life (1920x1080) with 2.0 Mega Pixel Integrated Camera 720p HD video

Hard Drive : 750GB Serial ATA (7200RPM)

8x DVD+/-RW Optical Drive

Primary 9-cell 90W/HR LI-ION (I get about 6h just browsing and stuff but 6 cell you would get about 4h and you comp would look nicer as in not off the desk but for gaming being off the desk is an advantage)

2GB NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M Graphics card

Intel Centrino Wireless-N 1000

2x USB 3.0, 1x USB/CHARGING 2.0

1x hdmi 1.4 FOR 3D

1x Microphone Jack and 2x Headphone jack Audio ports (yes 2 ports for 2 ppl 2 listen)

1x Gigabit LAN

English Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium (64 BIT)

McAfee SecurityCenter 15 Month Subscription

4Yr In-Home Warranty Support, including evenings and Saturdays

1 year of Collect & Return 10 day coverage included with your PC

It cost me £1050 or $1700, I was looking at hp's and stuff and they where like £1800 way way more expensive

I suggest that you give dell a call, on the phone they give you discounts and stuff if you ask. I also must state the jbl speakers and subwoofer are a dream for when playing games and stuff and the screen is awsome (the bightness is best set to 50% hurts your eyes it really is bright). Oh and its made from alliminium which looks brill but is fantastic because its not a fingerprint magnet.

Oh and I can run call of duty bo at high settings, batman aa at very high settings, command and conquer 4 at very high. Most games can run a max settings some you have to turn off say one feature from max to very high then the game is smooth. Its a really good laptop XD. Also dont forget this is at 1080p not 720p which most new laptops have nowdays.

The touchpad is also massive and very nice to use and has seperate right and left click buttons (i know some dont) which are nice to use.

Also the laptop is portable, i use it for taking to uni and things.

Answer
I'd go with the cheapest one, unless having the larger screen is really important to you. I have a larger pro laptop and it's heavy. Spending $1000 more for a screen that is only a bit larger seems too costly. As the the difference in hard drive size, you can buy a portable terabyte external drive for about $100 and can use it for backups or extra storage as needed.

I have an 80gb seagate portable hard drive and works with usb 2.0, but my ps3 80gb wont detect it..it will only detect my small ipod and my psp..any help is greatly appreciated.

Answer
You may have to press triangle more then once depending on the hard drives file structure

Simply take a jump drive, external hard drive, etcâ¦hook it up to the USB port on the front and then you--

Goto to view under music, or video, or photos, scroll down to the drive you've hooked up hover over it then push Triangle(notX) then select display all (view all)(press X) and it will show everything on the jump drive or external harddrive. Then either listen to or view the music, video, photos or copy to the ps3 hard drive directly.

If you have a psp you can also use that to move files from pc to ps3.

Using a portable hard drive to back up ps3 question?

Jakey

if i buy a 80gb portable hard drive to backup my ps3 will it be fat32? or will i have to do something to make it fat32? please explain how!

Answer
depends on the drive . you can use a pc to reformat it if necessary or most can be formatted using the ps3 - just go to system settings , format utility and find it . be careful you don't accidentally format the ps3 instead
you can ask specifically for a fat32 format drive before purchase or just plug into the ps3 to see if it shows up - if you can , first plug into your pc and check it's specs , copy something to it ( like an mp3 file , put it in a folder called MUSIC ) and see if the drive shows on your xmb under the music section
most drives that directly plug into a usb port without an external power supply are now fat32 but ask before buying and make sure they will show you on the package or manual where it says it is , don't just trust the employee

Hey Zack-
The only way to get Windows Media Center is through Vista Home Pemium or Vista Ultimate- it is not available as a stand-alone download. Here is an article outlining some of the cool features you can take advantage of with Windows Media Center: http://lifehacker.com/software/hack-attack/turn-your-windows-pc-into-a-media-center-powerhouse-on-the-cheap-298408.php

can i replace a failing hard drive with an external one?

Answer
External as in to a USB hard drive? You can't unless you plan to tear open the external drive and swap heard drives with the laptop. But you can only do that if both drives are same connection method ( sata , pata). Easier to purchase a new one install it and clone the drive. You would need to purchase a USB to HDD adapter and the new drive. Try thishttp://lifehacker.com/5517688/how-to-upgrade-your-tiny-hard-drive-to-a-spacious-new-one-and-keep-your-data-intact

I have a Startech eSATA to USB dock, and it works quite well. I use it as an external hard drive (because it is 500GB and my computer only has 250GB (I have a lot of movies/music so that doesn't last long, haha). I tried connecting my dock to my Xbox 360 (It's the original one, if that helps any) to use as a portable device to watch the movies on my external, but it doesn't register it at all. I have to move the movies from my external, to my internal, and then stream it through Windows Media Center, which is extremely irritating. Why isn't my xbox reading my dock?

Answer
I'm pretty sure that Microsoft made it so you couldn't watch movies straight from a portable device because of how long it would load, but all the potential risk of a possible virus being in the files of the device.

will this work the same as just having a normal xbox 360 250GB????

Answer
No, it won't work the same.

You can't put a standard hard drive into it. Even though it has a standard SATA outlet, it only recognizes Microsoft hard drives. (you should get the original Microsoft XBOX 360 250 GB hard drive for the 4 GB slim... then it will work the way it should)

You can use portable hard drives as external hard drives (connect them via USB), but this isn't as great as an internal one, because:

- Even though you can use the entire hard drive for storing movies etc that you copy to it from your computer so you can watch them on your XBOX 360

- XBOX 360 will not be able to write to this (read only). If you would like to download purchased games, demos etc from the Marketplace, you can create an XBOX Strorage on it, but as it is an external strorage, it is limited in 16 GB of size. Additional space (if any), can be only used as regular computer strorage.

Solution: get the original Microsoft 250 GB hard drive for XBOX 360 Slim... That's what I will do.

Answer
HI

I'M RAMIZ

you want to format your computer to have better system performance

you can put all your files on d: for example

and format only the system drive normaly it's C:

but if you need an fdisk because you have viruses you need to back up
and it's not recomended to compress your files but you can alwayes use a DVD writer to take a backup of your files each dvd contain from 4.7 to 7 giga

so backup your files to dvds and hard drive

if you still need space buy more dvd and this the best way

each dvd cost about 1 usd
a new hard drive with 1024 giga = i tira cost about 130 usd

Mark Davie

My hard drive on my HP laptop has stopped working and I was wondering if I can use my 1TB portable hard drive or 4GB usb stick to run a OS? I have pulled out my old HDD because I'm waiting for a new one. Any ideas?

Answer
If you are good technically then you can take out the HDD from a portable device and put it into your laptop.

The portable hard drive you have there should have a 2.5 inch internal hard disk and that should exactly replace the one inside your laptop.

I hope you know how to install the Operating System and program if you can do the above steps in flying colors.

Best of luck!

Should I get a new Mac or another hard drive?

Maddy

I've had my Macbook for about three years now. I use it mostly for iMovie and the mov flies take up a lot of space so I've been putting them on a portable hard-drive. Last week my portable hard-drive crashed so I got a new one and now the new one is having problems! I can't put the mov flies on my mac cuz if I do, i won't have any space. What do I do? Should I get another hard drive or a new mac?

Answer
Get a good quality external hard drive - far cheaper than buying a new mac.
I've had a Lacie 2TB external drive for my movies for about 3 years now, not a problem.
I also have another external drive that I just use for backups and not in use continually.
Make sure that it connects with Firewire and not just USB.
Best,

How do you move game data from one xbox hard drive to another?

I have a 20 gb hard drive (xbox 360), and i want to put all my data on a 60gb one, how do I do that? What do I need?
What do I do if I want to copy the data? Is that possible?

Answer
To successfully transfer your data from one Xbox 360 Hard Drive to another Xbox 360 Hard Drive, you must have the following components:

. Xbox 360 console
. Two Xbox 360 Hard Drives
. The data transfer cable
. The data transfer software

Important If you want to transfer your saved games and other content from your existing hard drive (the source drive) to a different hard drive (the destination drive), do not attach the destination drive to your Xbox 360 console until you have transferred the contents of the source drive according to the instructions in this section. Any content that you stored on the destination hard drive before the content transfer will be lost.

Transfer content from your existing Xbox 360 Hard Drive

You have the option to perform a one-time transfer of all content from your existing Xbox 360 Hard Drive (source drive) to another Xbox 360 Hard Drive (destination drive). Whether you decide to do this or not, understand that both drives are fully compatible with your Xbox 360 console and will be after the transfer is completed.

Important Content can only ever be moved from a smaller source drive to a destination drive that is the same size or larger and only one time. For example, the following hard drive pairings allow transfer from source to (">") destination:

20GB > 20GB

20GB > 60GB

20GB > 120GB

60GB > 60GB

60GB > 120GB

120GB > 120GB

Note If you intend to move content from an existing hard drive, such as your 20GB hard drive, to a new destination hard drive, such as to a 60GB hard drive, do not use the destination hard drive before you perform this procedure or you will lose whatever content that you have previously put on that destination drive.

When the transfer is complete, the destination drive will contain all transferable files from the source drive. This includes your saved games and Xbox LIVE downloads. Additionally, the destination drive will contain its preloaded content. The contents of the source drive will be erased.

If you resume use of the source drive after the transfer, be aware that you will not have another opportunity to transfer content directly to your other hard drive. For an easy, portable way to move your saved games or your Xbox LIVE membership between hard drives or to take them with you wherever you go, try the Xbox 360 Memory Unit. The Xbox 360 Memory Unit is sold separately.

Apart from this one-time option to transfer all content to your new hard drive, you cannot copy or move items directly from one hard drive to another, regardless of drive capacity. To copy or move items after the one-time transfer, use the Xbox 360 Memory Unit. Except as detailed in the following procedure, only one hard drive may be connected to your console at a time. The transfer cable cannot be used to transfer data from more than one hard drive or to connect multiple hard drives to your console at the same time.

Note As with any data-transfer process, there is a risk that some or all data may become lost during the transfer process. If you continue with the data-transfer process, you do this at your own risk. Additionally, you agree that Microsoft is not liable for any loss of data that results from the transfer process.

Steps to transfer your content from one Xbox 360 Hard Drive to another Xbox 360 Hard Drive

1. Turn off your Xbox 360 console with your existing hard drive (the source drive) still attached.

2. Disconnect all accessories from the Xbox 360 console's controller ports.

3. Turn on your Xbox 360 console. Connect and turn on a controller. You will need a controller during content transfer.

4. Connect one end of the transfer cable to the destination drive.

5. Connect the other end of the transfer cable to the Xbox 360 console's rear USB port.

Important Make sure that you connect the transfer cable to the back port on your Xbox 360 console. Do not connect the transfer cable to a port on the front of your Xbox 360 console.

6. Insert the included Hard Drive Transfer Disc into your Xbox 360 console's disk tray. Instructions appear on the screen.

Attach and remove your Xbox 360 Hard Drive

If you are already using a 20GB or a 60GB Xbox 360 Hard Drive, see the "Transfer content from an existing Xbox 360 Hard Drive" section before you attach your new hard drive. If you will not be transferring content from another hard drive, your new hard drive is ready to use immediately.

Attach your Xbox 360 Hard Drive

1. Turn off your Xbox 360 console.

2. Remove the hard drive bay cover from your console.

3. Put the hard drive over the hard drive bay with the thin end pointed toward the front of your Xbox 360 console and the thick end pointed toward the back of your Xbox 360 console.

4. Put the back of the hard drive against the back of the hard drive bay. Make sure that the ridge along the back of the hard drive rests underneath the lip on the back of the hard drive

Answer
A portable hard drive plugs into the USB or eSATA jack. (It's external to the computer.) An expansion drive is an internal drive.

is there a HD that can download directly w/o computer?

carnaby_fu

is there such a thing as a portable hard drive that you can download directly to without the need for a computer? i'm going on a trip where i will be taking a hefty number of photos and i'd like to be able to dump the memory cards without also having to bring a computer with me.
i know i could just bring a bunch of memory cards but that's a lot to buy and i'd prefer to back them up anyway. does such a product exist? or am i stuck with the laptop?

Answer
Portable drive to load camera photos were common in the 10,20,40, and 60GB sizes until they were priced out of the market by the high capacity SD flash drives. You can buy those now for less than $1 a GB in the 16, 32GB size. Be sure you test each one before going on your trip.
If you still want a very large (500GB or bigger) hard disk, contact a photo store or B&H Photo or Adorama about those that interface with cameras or camera cards. Tell them about your equipment to get a match. http://www.adorama.com/catalog.tpl?op=recommend&sku=DFPS2250G has a 500 and a 320, battery pack, card reader included. Get an extra battery pack.
http://dpnow.com/7973.html shows the tiny Seagate drive.
If no match, you can try an adapter cord to a battery powered hard disk:

http://www.memoryforless.co.uk/store/erol.html#1X0
http://www.everythingusb.com/macally_syncbox_ii.html
http://www.compusb.com/usbotgbru2br.html
One thing to consider is in a stack of cards, if one goes bad, the others are OK. But if a 320HD is damaged, the whole thing and all its pix are gone.
What size and style flash cards your camera(s) take and the total shot volume planned may govern how you go on storage of the photos. I hope all of them survive.

How to reformat an external hard drive to a mac book?

best external hard drives with mac image

Chloe

I have an external hard drive that my macbook recognize and it shows up on the desk top but for some reason I can't add anything into the external hard drive. I can remove items from my external hard drive into my mac book.

I tried to format it but it continually says:
Volume Erase failed with the error:

Could not modify partition map

I have no idea what to do to fix this problem, so please any help would be most appreciative!!

Answer
Was your external hard drive set up on or for a Windows machine? If so, it may be formatted as NTFS. Natively, OS X can read from but not write to NTFS discs. Disk Utility should be able to tell you the current format. If it is NTFS, your options will be obtain a utility that lets you write NTFS discs, reformat as FAT32 if you want to be able to read and write on both OS X and Windows â this will result in some restrictions on file size under FAT32â or reformat as an OS X Extended disc if you never have to exchange with Windows. You'll need to repartition the whole disc, not just attempt to reformat the individual partitions, I think.

What format should my external hard drive be formatted to work on a Mac and also hold files bigger than 4GB?

Alekz

I can't modify my external hard drive on my Mac because it's formatted on NTFS.

Then, What format should it be formatted if my files are bigger than 4GB? Fat32 doesn't let me save files any bigger than that! Any solution?

Answer
Well, you have encountered the limitations of using a PC formatted drive on a Mac. Is there any reason you're not wanting to format it as a Mac drive?

The normal reason for not doing this is because you want to share the drive with a PC. You haven't mentioned this situation and your question, but it's the only possibility I can think of.

So the bottom line, at least as far as I can see, is that if you want to share the drive with a PC then you aren't going to be able to do files over 4 GB. If you don't want to share it with a PC, then just reformat it as a Mac OS extended volume.
