How could I make my ps3 detect my portable hard drive?

I have an 80gb seagate portable hard drive and works with usb 2.0, but my ps3 80gb wont detect it..it will only detect my small ipod and my psp..any help is greatly appreciated.

You may have to press triangle more then once depending on the hard drives file structure

Simply take a jump drive, external hard drive, etcâ¦hook it up to the USB port on the front and then you--

Goto to view under music, or video, or photos, scroll down to the drive you've hooked up hover over it then push Triangle(notX) then select display all (view all)(press X) and it will show everything on the jump drive or external harddrive. Then either listen to or view the music, video, photos or copy to the ps3 hard drive directly.

If you have a psp you can also use that to move files from pc to ps3.

depends on the drive . you can use a pc to reformat it if necessary or most can be formatted using the ps3 - just go to system settings , format utility and find it . be careful you don't accidentally format the ps3 instead
you can ask specifically for a fat32 format drive before purchase or just plug into the ps3 to see if it shows up - if you can , first plug into your pc and check it's specs , copy something to it ( like an mp3 file , put it in a folder called MUSIC ) and see if the drive shows on your xmb under the music section
most drives that directly plug into a usb port without an external power supply are now fat32 but ask before buying and make sure they will show you on the package or manual where it says it is , don't just trust the employee

i have an 80gb portable external hard drive which is parted into two{40gb each} and now i want to remove the partition.can anyone share their knowledge on how to do it???

You have a couple of options that'll do the trick:

1. If you have 80 gb of free space on your internal hard drive, then you could move all of the data from your external hard drive partitions onto your internal drive.

Then you could use the fdisk command to remove the partitions from your external drive and create a single 80gb partition, and then copy the data back from your internal drive to the external drive.

Be sure to make a backup first though - it's easy to make a fatal mistake with the fdisk command and accidentally format the wrong hard drive (speaking from painful personal experience).

2. Purchase a partition management program like Partition Commander or Disk Director. Both are reputable programs that'll let you move or delete partitions without losing your data (see links below for reviews on both of these programs).

This last approach is a lot easier route to go, and money well spent.

Why can't I transfer really large files to a portable drive?

I have a 6GB file that I want to transfer to my 300GB WD portable hard drive. However, when I try, I get a message saying there isn't enough disk space even though I checked and there's still 80GB of free space left.

Sounds like your drive is formatted as FAT, which has a maximum file size of 4Gb. What you need to do is re-format the drive as NTSC (works on XP and later) or exFAT (works on Vista and Windows 7).

First, make sure everything on the drive is copied somewhere else, 'cause this will erase the drive.

Open My Computer and right-click on the removable drive. Select Format, and select the format you want from the drop-down list (I suggest NTSC). Tick 'Quick Format' and then Start button. The drive will be erased and reformatted.

You should then be able to add your large files.
