i only want to connect it because there are films and music on it but when i put it in the usb port, and go to video/music library, it says that there are no portable devices connected. is there something i need to do or am i in the wrong place? any help is greatly appreciated! thanks x

Answer
the 360 for some reason doesn't recognize many (or any at all) Externals HD's. It will recognize many flash drives though. If you have a flash drive transfer the episodes or movies over to it. Game on from there.

How do you save songs and pics on your xbox 360 hard drive?

Danny

i dont just want to view them, i want to save them so i dont need to go through my laptop all the time. i DONT have xbox live. AND I WANT TO SAVE THEM!!!!!

Answer
The Xbox 360 console rips audio tracks to the WMA (Microsoft® Windows® Media Audio) format at 192 kbps. Ripping an audio CD with Xbox 360 requires an Xbox 360 Hard Drive.

Please note that existing MP3 and WMA audio files cannot be ripped or otherwise copied to an Xbox 360 Hard Drive, though you can listen to such files from recordable CDs or DVDs or from a connected storage device. For more information, see Use a Portable Audio Player with Xbox 360.

To rip music from a CD to an Xbox 360 Hard Drive

Turn on your Xbox 360 console with no disc in the tray.
Load an audio CD. The Xbox 360 music player will launch and CD playback will begin.
Select Rip CD to view the Rip CD screen. By default, all the tracks on the CD will be selected. If you do not want to copy all the tracks, manually de-select the tracks that you do not want to rip.

When you're ready to generate your audio files, select Rip CD again to begin ripping.
Note

You cannot listen to music while the console is ripping a CD.

The Xbox 360 console comes preloaded with a database of artist and track information for thousands of commercial CDs. If your console is connected to Xbox LIVE, the system will look online for album info if it does not find it locally.

If the system cannot recognize your CD, the console will show you the Edit Album Info screen prior to ripping your disc. Use this screen and your controller to supply details like Album Name, Artist Name, and Genre.

Tip

You can enter information using either a USB keyboard plugged into a controller port or your Xbox 360 controller and the on-screen virtual keyboard.

To proceed with ripping without entering album information, select Save Changes from the Edit Album Info screen. To cancel a rip in progress, press Back (B) at the Ripping CD screen.

You can also enter track titles while a CD is ripping.

To edit track titles while ripping a CD

From the Ripping CD screen, select the track title you want to enter.
From the Edit Song Info screen, enter the details for Song Name, Artist Name, and Genre. (If you entered artist name and genre at the Edit Album Info screen, these fields will be prefilled, but you can also edit them on a song-by-song basis here.)
Further, you can choose to rip an unknown CD now (its title will be "Unknown Album <date/time>") and update its album information later.

To edit album information after a disc has been ripped

From the Media area of the Xbox Dashboard, select Music.
If the Console screen is not displayed, press X and select Console.
Under Albums, select the album with the information you want to update.
Select Edit Album Info, then use your controller to supply Album Name, Artist Name, and Genre. Album names can be up to 39 characters long. When finished, select Save Changes.

To edit individual song titles, repeat Steps 1 and 2, then select the track title you wish to change. From the screen for that track, select Edit Song Info to edit the Song Name, Artist Name, or Genre, then select Save Changes.

Like album names, track names can be up to 39 characters long.

installing logic pro 9 onto a portable hard drive instead of my macs hard drive?

Nik

ok, i really want to buy Logic Pro 9 for my mac to do recording and such, but i know i dont have enough memory on my mac to instal it because i only have the 64GB mac. if there anyway to instal Logic Pro 9 onto my 500GB portable hard drive instead of my macs hard drive? i dont want to spend $200.00 and then realize i cant install it.

Answer
Logic Pro 9 comes with huge collections of libraries, which means program itself isn't that big; around 1 GB or less.

Other than that you can pretty much install on an external drive if you have any.
If you still don't own please make sure you buy one with:

SATA or eSata port - if your Mac supports those connection or you have enough money to get PCI cards for the port. Second choice would be Firewire 800 then USB2. and it also depends on what kind of audio interface you are using.

7200RPM or more; no 5400RPM
which means 2.5 is not recommended - it limits number of the samples you can play simultaneously.
but if you think you won't max out the spec you can go for it.

plan accordingly

What's the difference b/w portable & external hard drives?

portable hard drives for sale on Portable External Hard Drive | Computers & Accessories for sale ...
portable hard drives for sale image

Peachez_10

I'm trying 2 figure out what's the difference b/w an external hard drive and a portable hard drive... And if there's no difference, why are each of them listed under 2 categories...?

Answer
Some external hard drives are too big to be portable and they are not advertised as such. "Portable" is kind of an ambiguous term. A lot of things are small enough to be portable, but they are not easily portable. My external hard drive is small enough to be portable, but it requires an A/C adapter, so wherever I go, if I want to take it with me, I need to use it where there is an A/C power source. This is not practical if I am somewhere where my laptop can run off its own batteries and there is no other source of power, like on a bus, car, train, public place or airplane that doesn't have an A/C power outlet. Plus, I would have to pack a bulky A/C adapter and power cord in addition to the USB cord that connects it to the PC. A truly portable hard drive is one that is small enough to carry and is powered by the USB jack on the computer. Unfortunately, the manufacturers of supposedly "portable" external hard drives don't care about how easy it is to transport and use their products, they just want you to buy them and use them. If they can get you to buy them by saying they are portable, even though it is a pain to do so, then they make a sale.

What is better Seagate freeagent go or western digital my passport essential?

trevttk123

Iâm trying to decide what portable hard drive to buy, the Seagate Freeagent go or Western Digital's passport essential. Does either need any type of outside power source, like a battery? Do I need to buy a forked USB cable in order to have enough power?

Answer
Based on my variety of experiences, I'd choose Seagate unless you are planning on dumping some money for WD Raptors.

Experience from 20 years ago isn't going to help you, but Seagate's reputation took a dive after they bought Connor. :) Infact, the whole company took a dive with layoffs and being spread too thin overseas.

But they've gained a large market share since and have remained very strong in company / business sales all the while. Their current consumer line of drives seem very reliable as the ratio of bad Seagate drives vs good ones seems lower than bad Western Digital vs. good ones. I don't have numbers, but that's just the way it looks after working on thousands of computers.

My personal experiences with Seagate have been flawless. No problems. I cannot say the same for WD. But again, it is all subjective and luck of the draw...

Also from my personal experiences, I might include Samsung if it is available at a low price as well.

Can I transfer my itunes library from my PC to a portable hard drive?

tattaglia2

My PC is getting slow becasue my itunes library is very large. How can I move my music without losing it to a portable hard drive. Also if you can tell me where will new music go after I have transfered the music. (I'm new to iTunes)

Answer
Your hard drive getting full would not slow down the computer unless your hard drive had next to no free space left (meaning less than a couple GB). It's insufficient RAM that slows the computer down (and having lots of programs open at once), not a full hard drive. Defragment your hard drive and that should solve most of your problems.

If you really want to transfer the songs to the external, just go to your Music folder (C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\My Documents\My Music in XP, C:\Users\<username>\Music in Vista and Windows 7) and copy the iTunes folder over to the external hard drive.

In iTunes, open up the settings menu and go to "Advanced". The first option there is the location of the iTunes library. Change that to the place that now has the music and you're all set.

Can anyone tell me how to install programs onto a portable hard drive?

Catherine

I just bought a portable hard drive and am looking forward to installing programs on it so my computer's hard drive will be less cluttered. Does anyone know how to do this? I want to install my computer games, music media organizer, and various others onto it. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Answer
When you connect the protable hard drive you will need to format it with your Windows software or the Portable hard drives manufacturers CD which came with it. Then once it is formatted all you will need to do is connect it via the USB cable and then it will install itself. You then can go to MY COMPUTER and see it listed there. Then any file or program you want to store on there or save on there can be easily transfered/stored by left clicking on the file (highlight it) and then on the top of the open window go to left click EDIT, then either COPY TO FOLDER or MOVE TO FOLDER, (then another window will pop up with all you drives and folders) you will then find your PORTABLE HARD DRIVE in there LEFT click on it and it will save to that hard drive. You can also make a new folder once you open up the Portable Hard drive in the popup window so you can save different things in different folders. Hope this helped..

Can anybody suggest some good portable hard drives to me?

mayerj72

I am buy a portable hard drive with a memory capacity of about 300 to 500 GB and want it to be rather slim.

I have no clue about hard drives and don't know what I need to look for or what some good brands are.

Answer
you will find many hard drive brands available. All are slim and sleek unless you go for 1 TB of space and all. But generally 500 GB Hard drives are slim in a case. You can check out the prices of the Hard drives and the various brands of hard drives with their prices on ebay.com and you can also order from there if shipping doesn't take a lot. More importantly you can see the pictures of hard drive and then from local market you can buy the particular hard drive if u wish to.

How does an external hard drive work?

wd portable hard drive software image

Dobber

So not exactly sure how they work and wanted some information before I make a purchase. I have alot of files and information I'd like to back up. Well over the amount a flash drive can hold. Does a external hard drive basicly fuction as a flash drive on steriods? Just looking for something that I can store alot of files on and is portable.

Answer
Most external hard drives, when plugged in via USB, appear as âUSB Mass Storage Devicesâ â exactly the same as flash drives. Just be aware that hard drives are more sensitive to drops and shocks than flash drives, so they must be handled with care.

However, you may want to look into an eSATA drive instead. They also function largely like a flash drive, but they can transfer data just as fast as an internal drive (for about $15 more than a USB drive). If you donât have an eSATA port already, you can buy a cheap bracket that connects to an internal SATA port and then provides an eSATA port on the back of your computer (some drives/enclosures even come with these). Just make sure that your motherboard supports hot-plug SATA (as most modern boards do), or else youâll have to reboot to recognize the drive whenever you plug it in.

Also, a tip: Unless youâre interested in the (usually useless) backup software that comes with ready-built external drives, you may be better off buying a hard drive and enclosure separately. Manufacturers usually use up their last-gen drives by putting them in external enclosuresâ¦

Just decide whether you want a smaller (in both physical size and capacity), slower 2.5" drive or a standard 3.5" drive, then get a matching drive and enclosure from the likes of Amazon or Newegg. For a 2.5" drive, you might go with a WD Scorpio Blue 500GB for about $55. For a 3.5" drive, you could go with any number of models around 1-2TB, but note that 7200RPM drives usually need an enclosure with a fan, whereas an aluminum enclosure will act as a heat-sink and be able to passively cool a 5400RPM drive. Beyond that, I canât give much advice on picking an enclosure.

why wont my computer let me use two external hard drives at the same time?

Q. I've got windows 7 on my brand new HP and i have a 1TB WD portable external thats works fine. My friend has the same external and my computer recognizes it but it will not let me access it at all. i can see it in device manager but i cant browse it. Please help.

Answer
Most likely, the external drive is not formatted in a way that Windows 7 understands. For example, if it was formatted for a Mac, Windows won't be able to read it without special software. What shows up in the Disk Manager?

How could they not put an X or Close button on Windows 8 apps?

Jim

It's just unfreaking believable how the designers of Windows 8 did NOT put any X or Close button on apps/programs that open up! I have to sit there and hit ALT - Tab just to get back to windows. There must be something up , maybe it's a world wide conspiracy to make people go crazy or something because something that basic and logical could not just have been left out on accident. Someone please help me with the logic of this!

Answer
alt F4 will close apps and logic is simple

microsoft has domain pretty much over the home desktop and laptop market and has done for ages how ever there no longer the most popular operating system if you count *dramatic music* mobile devices such as tablets mobile phones pda's etc and this seems to be where the markets heading for example laptop and deskop sales going down year by year tablet and mobile phone sales going up year by year so microsoft has desided to make a OS and compete in the portable market along with there tablets and phones etc (enter windows 8) which is basic windows 7 with few minor tweeks to kernel and genric library modules and new UI skin but really and truly not hugely different and im not the only person that feels this quite a few others have stated similar findings. i have actually debugged half the rc2 beta and i can tell you there not a huge deal of difference based on windows 7 with latest service pack and updated .net frameworks we are talking minimal to be honest a couple 100mb patch if that

ooo microsoft admits it
from the windwos 8 page on Microsoft.com

"Windows 7, only better

Windows 8 is built on the rock-solid foundation of Windows 7, but itâs been improved on all fronts. You can install Windows 8 on the same hardware that powers Windows Vista and Windows 7."

i know that dont say it exactly but you can see its really is just saying windows 7 updated

so now you know windows 8 is not designed really with laptops and desktop pc's in mind imo and fact all adverts on tv for it are on tablets and phones aint seen 1 with someone sitting in front of a desktop yet

now you know that thinkg have you ever seen a x button on a android app or iphone app ? no of course not mobile devices have back buttons or home buttons

other examples (based on rc2 beta) the new start button feature looks brilliant works great until u got on a pc wih a 2tgb hard drive start to fill it with apps and programs like 800gb of stuff and that start button even on OC i7 with 8gb ddr3 2200mhz takes about 3 mins to load wonder if they fixed that (probs have was a bad idea trying to get shortcuts to half the os rather just the gagets that dashboard was designed for) but on a tablet with only 16gb or 32gb of storage probs works instantly

there is ofcourse the other argument that lot of people dont know how to use a pc envrioment but know how to use windows 8 since they already have a tablet or a smart phone

alot of other os's and distro's have gone this way for example unity on ubuntu (would point out though that since this they have lost positions in best desktop and laptop distro to linux mint and other distros) gives it a very app feel which for new users to linuxs and pc's is great but most desktop and laptop users dont want flashy icons they want a stable nice desktop... and of course CHROME os by google

i think personally the style of them are good for the average consumer by which i mean people just want something that works don't want to play games or atleast not high resources games just want to watch you tube write emails listen to a few mp3's and share things on facebook etc all low resource things web browser , media player sort thing you can have 3 instance open of each and on a decent pc your not using even half the ram and processing power available average computer these days id say has 4gb ram + paging file and quad core processor at about 2.5ghz (average) so whats 2-3 web browser running in background a media player and couple of explorer tabs ur not even hitting 30% of that ram and processor power) so dont matter about closing things and freeing up resources since ur not even using half of what the computer has and all taking care of at shut-down when just clears lot

(not saying i agree with it but think for average user it aint going to be a issue + garbage collection got a lot better and memory leaks handled quite well since 7)

for the more intense user windows 8 is not the way to go FULL STOP go back to 7 or switch to Linux ( and never pay a penny again) i did about 5 years ago and never looked back and don't believe that rubbish that nothing will work Linux has alternative for pretty much every thing and if there isnt 1 using wine can usually get the windows version to work any way.

p.s i am slightly bias since i think windows 7 was only os they got rite since windows 2000 every other 1 for example xp had 550mb of services packs before it was stable bare in mind original xp was only 800mb uncompressed to begin with they basicly had to patch almost 3/4 of the original size of the os to get it to work and be stable

Answer
Well you certainly picked out two of the best computers in the market. I have a MacBook Pro late 2011. Both computers are very good but you're looking at a price range. Since you're going to college I would recommend a MacBook Air is cheaper, and lighter, and more portable. A MacBook Pro is used for professional things most of the time. If you need power in the computer usually want a MacBook Pro, but if you need an all-around good computer that is fast but you don't need all the raw power, then the MacBook Air is perfect for you again it is so light, and cheap. I would look into getting 13 inch MacBook air, with 256 hard drive of flash memory.

My wife just got a Mac-book (or some apple computer of shorts). It is the first apple base computer in our family. Being I'm a Microsoft guy (I have not converted yet), I'm clueless about Macs. I want to buy my wife a portable hard drive for her birthday (and she has been asking for one). Will any portable hard drive work for an Apple or do I need to specifically buy an Apple product?

Answer
If you were to go to an Apple retail store, you'd see that none of the portable hard drives are Apple-branded. Apple doesn't make its own hard disks, not even the ones in their Time Machine backup product.

If you get something from Seagate, Toshiba or Western Digital you should be fine. Those are all big players in the storage market and I've used drives from all those manufacturers successfully with a Mac running OS X.

When I get my new laptop, would using a portable hard drive to store everything help it from getting slow?

John Malko

I've come to notice that all of my past desk tops have progressively slowed over time. Many have told me that it's because the memory is filling up. If I only saved what I really needed on my new laptop and saved music and movie files on a portable hard drive, wouldn't that keep it from bogging down?

Answer
A little.

Most system slowdowns are not caused by over-filled hard drives.

Over a period of time viruses, spyware, uninstalled programs, corrupt data etc are what slows a computer down. Not the data that is stored on it.

So, once the computer starts slowing down, backing up all the data to an external drive and reinstalling windows will bring the computer back to the way it was when you bought it. Nice and fast.

I have all my music on my portable hard drive, and I need to convert it to mp3 (I think) because my mp3 player won't play it, but I don't want to (and might not be able to) put it on my computer. Thank you for the help.

Answer
You can add the files from the external drive to itunes.
Change the itunes defautl from aac to mp3 by going to edit/preferences/advanced/import
Highlight all the aac songs
Click the advanced tab in itunes and click convert to mp3.

You wil then have copies of the songs in both aac and mp3 and you can just delete the aac ones if you want.
(make the default file in itunes the external hard drives, drive and you can just right click and delete the files from the hard drive in itunes. The default file is under edit/preferences/advanced/general)

Whats the dif between portable hard drive, flashdrive, memory stick...I have about 300 cds & 1000 photos.

Answer
wait, lets see volumes first

300 cd's @ 700 mb each > 210 gb
1000 photo's ain't that much, but you could add 10 gb

so in effect you presently have 220 gb of storage to handle

jolly well forget flash drives and memory sticks and all
4 gb to 8 gb is all that you can realistically expect

and we are left with the other solution > portable or external hard drives
something in the range of 500 gb to 1000 gb ( 1 tb ) is what you should be aiming for, cause your collection is going to expand ... looking into the future i mean

500 gb

How to clear Space on Mac?

Ana

I'm serious I only have freakin' 10 GB left!! My computer is getting pretty slow because of this! I was thinking of buying a TB portable hard drive and then hooking it up to my mac and moving all the videos and pictures and media to the hard drive because it takes up A LOT OF SPACE! Will it work? Or do you have other suggestions?

Answer
Actually Mac OS X is good at of taking care of itself, if there are performance issues, there are a couple of things you can check:
* Check your Login Items under System Preferences > Accounts to see what you have automatically launching. Also check /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Users/yourusername/Library/LaunchAgents/ for items launching at startup
* Launch Activity Monitor and change "My Processes" at the top to "All Processes". Then see what may be consuming your OS X system resources.
* Check the System Memory tab at the bottom of Activity Monitor to see if you have excessive "page outs", a sign that you may benefit from more RAM.
* Check if you are running any poor Mac anti-virus programs as they may take large resouces.

If you don't want to do these manually or the above check still won't help, let this Mac speed up program http://www.anysoftwaretools.com/speed-up-mac.html to perform a health check of your Mac and fix relevant issues easily. Regards.

PS 3 or Xbox 360 with kinect??
Could you give me some details about each of them? Thanks!

Answer
The PlayStation 3 is the third home video game console produced by Sony Computer Entertainment and the successor to the PlayStation 2 as part of the PlayStation series. The PlayStation 3 competes with Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Nintendo's Wii as part of the seventh generation of video game consoles.
A major feature that distinguishes the PlayStation 3 from its predecessors is its unified online gaming service, the PlayStation Network, which contrasts with Sony's former policy of relying on video game developers for online play. Other major features of the console include its robust multimedia capabilities, connectivity with the PlayStation Portable, and its use of the Blu-ray Disc as its primary storage medium. The PS3 was also the first Blu-ray 2.0-compliant Blu-ray player on the market.
The PlayStation 3 was first released on November 11, 2006 in Japan, November 17, 2006 in North America, March 16, 2007 in the United Kingdom and Ireland, and March 23, 2007 in mainland Europe and Oceania. Two stock-keeping units were available at launch: a basic model with a 20 GB hard disk drive (which was not released in Europe or Oceania) and a premium model with a 60 GB hard drive and several additional features. Since then several revisions have been made to the console's available models, most notably with the release of a new slim model in September 2009 to coincide with rebranding of the console and its logo.

The Xbox 360 is the second video game console produced by Microsoft, and the successor to the Xbox. The Xbox 360 competes with Sony's PlayStation 3 and Nintendo's Wii as part of the seventh generation of video game consoles. As of January 2011, there are over 50 million Xbox 360 consoles worldwide.
The Xbox 360 was officially unveiled on MTV on May 12, 2005, with detailed launch and game information divulged later that month at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3). The console sold out completely upon release in all regions except in Japan.
Some major features of the Xbox 360 are its integrated Xbox Live service that allows players to compete online, download arcade games, game demos, trailers, TV shows, music and movies and its Windows Media Center multimedia capabilities. The Xbox 360 also offers region specific access to third-party media streaming services such as Netflix and ESPN in the US or Sky Player in the UK.

Kinect for Xbox 360, or simply Kinect (originally known by the code name Project Natal), is a "controller-free gaming and entertainment experience" by Microsoft for the Xbox 360 video game platform. Based around a webcam-style add-on peripheral for the Xbox 360 console, it enables users to control and interact with the Xbox 360 without the need to touch a game controller, through a natural user interface using gestures and spoken commands. The project is aimed at broadening the Xbox 360's audience beyond its typical gamer base. Kinect competes with the Wii Remote Plus and PlayStation Move and PlayStation Eye motion control systems for the Wii and PlayStation 3 home consoles, respectively.
Kinect was launched in North America on November 4, 2010, in Europe on November 10, 2010, in Australia, New Zealand and Singapore on November 18, 2010 and in Japan on November 20, 2010. Purchase options for the sensor peripheral include a bundle with the game Kinect Adventures and console bundles with either a 4 GB or 250 GB Xbox 360 console and Kinect Adventures.
Kinect holds the Guinness World Record of being the "Fastest selling consumer electronics device". It sold an average of 133,333 units per day with a total of 8 million units in its first 60 days. 10 million units of the Kinect sensor have been shipped as of March 9, 2011.

How are these ds games?

Hey

I need a review on these games
1. Skate it
2. skate 2
3.shaun white snowboarding

Are they good games?
Are the graphics good?
Are they games that people can actually beat or are they extremely hard?

Answer
The skateboarding genre might have started with many contenders, but when the dust settled you pretty much had one choice: Tony Hawk or nothing. And it's been that way for more than half a decade. Last year, however, Electronic Arts decided we've had enough of the same ol' Tony Hawk Neversoft design and developed an ingenious skateboarding "simulation" called Skate for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The way the designers made you work for basic skateboarding maneuvers gave a sense of satisfaction when you successfully complete it. Skate was good. And you know what happens with successful games, right? They get sequels, and more importantly, they get ported to the handheld. Skate It isn't exactly a port of the original game, but it is a conversion of the unique experience in a stylus driven design. The DS game is incredibly ambitious and is also a lot of fun. It's just a little too rough around the edges to give it high praise.

The Nintendo DS game lifts the same title as the Wii game released day and date, but the portable version doesn't really share a whole lot beyond the core concept of skateboarding and offering a unique way of controlling your skateboarder. In fact the DS game feels a little more along the lines of the original skate does, as there are many similarities to the locations and challenges from the console original in the portable rendition.

Skate It's development duties fell upon Electronic Arts' dependable DS team over in the UK: Exient. With the company already working on top handheld projects like Madden, FIFA, Need for Speed, and Tiger Woods, it's not surprising to see that the studio was put to the task of bringing the ambitious skateboarding design to the dual-screen handheld. And for the most part, the team got it down. Not only is the 3D tech solid with open environments, detailed visuals, and realistic skateboarder animations, but the game feels right in controls, too.

Touch screen control is a little overwhelming at first, but you'll get the hang of it.

Performing skateboarding maneuvers is handled entirely on the touchscreen with handwriting and flicking gestures taking the place of the analog trick stick of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 game. The lower screen has an image of a skateboard which is used as a sort of guide to let you know an Ollie from a Nollie -- by default it's displayed at an angle, but you can orient the controls to be straight up and down if that fits your fancy. Flicking from the bottom up performs an Ollie (a nose-up jump), top to bottom a Nollie (a tail-up jump). Skewing the angle causes a kickflip, and adding a bit more curve or angle points will add more flair to the move. The game has dozens of moves to master, and luckily the in-game trick list does a great job showing the exact drawing points to do with the stylus in order to pull them off. Combining those moves with a left/right on the D-pad will add the 180/360s, and a shoulder button will include a grab to the performed move.

If it sounds a little intimidating, don't worry: it is. This game isn't easy: just like the console game the DS version is actually enormously challenging but it's also amazingly satisfying due to its complexity. Skateboarding isn't an easy sport to pick up and play, and Skate It does a great job representing the sport in a game that has a learning curve to match. But once you get it, there's almost no going back to the alternative; Tony Hawk, you had your day in the sun, but we've had our fill of auto-combos and grinds that can go on forever. The Nintendo DS game is a little more forgiving than the console versions, but that may be due to technological restrictions than actual, intentional design choice. Grind rails are a little more magnetic than in other Skate games -- it's not quite as automatic as Tony Hawk because you still have to have an accurate jump move towards the rail you want to boardslide.

This is not my review for Skate it. But this is the best I can get you xD

can i build my custom PC in virtually any case?

I was instructed by a video guide to use the NZXT Source 210 USB 3.0 Mid Tower Chassis with 1x 120/140mm Fan, but as I am making a gaming PC I would like a better case that looks better also. could I use cases like a http://www.amazon.co.uk/BitFenix-Prodigy-Mini-ITX-Geh%C3%A4use-Netzteil/dp/B008BZYJ6W/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1378489628&sr=8-1&keywords=BitFenix+Mini-ITX+Tower+Case+Arctic+White+BFC-PRO-300-WWXKW-RP , CiT Vantage Type-R Gaming Case with HD Audio, 4 Fans, Card Reader and No PSU - Black or a http://www.amazon.co.uk/Cooler-Master-RC-430-KWN1-Elite-Window/dp/B003OEDJTI/ref=sr_1_14?ie=UTF8&qid=1378489755&sr=8-14&keywords=gaming+pc+case any help much appreciateded and basically I want to know if it will still fit the same :)

Answer
The quality of a case is overrated. I built my first gaming machine in a case that cost $20. In hindsight I consider it a mistake because the included fans were REALLY noisy, but it didn't affect the performance of the computer. The only time the case becomes a question mark is if it uses an ITX motherboard, like your BitFenix Prodigy, but it sounds like it will work just fine. The hard drive cage can be removed so you can fit a big graphics card inside. I use an XFX Radeon HD 7850 2GB. It's a MASSIVE card, but one of the reviews for the case on Newegg specifically mentions that card fitting in the case. But if you do go with the BitFenix make sure to keep an eye on the temperature in the case. It might work just fine with the two included fans, but the product description mentions watercooling features quite a bit, as does the review that mentioned the 7850. If your system overheats then you might need to consider watercooling.

The second case looks plenty big enough, just not quite as portable as the first.

What is the best way to make an external hard drive wireless?

best external hard drive nas on New WD External Western Digital WD2500C032 250GB Hard Drive USB 2 0 ...
best external hard drive nas image

Answer

I am looking for pros & cons of the following options:
1. Router with USB port
2. Wireless USB hub
3. Apple Time capsule
4. Other.

I am looking to make my external hard drive wireless. I want to be able to access it from my desktop and laptop.

Answer
Connect it to your desktop, make sure your laptop is in the same work group as your desktop.

Do you not already have a wireless network for your laptop? If you do you can just Right-Click your external drive in "MY Computer" and select "Sharing and Security" Make sure "Share this Folder" is selected. Now you can access the drive over the network without purchasing extra equipment.

Wireless usb hubs cannot support connecting multiple computers to the same device at the same time... They are made for connecting multiple devices to one computer and WILL NOT WORK for connecting multiple computers to one device... USB has no collision detection which is why it is not able to network computers together as well. Only Fire wire and IP based technology has such a capability.

If you do not have a wireless network then I recommend a wireless NAS with USB ports like this one from trendnet: http://www.google.com/product_url?q=http://www.provantage.com/trendnet-ts-i300w~7TDWU00R.htm&fr=ALNQw8ZOsElh9bXPMldqHaCmEfyqpR1bfM6_CTLNgbsqKN2Y95nHhI0ZAdrl5cVMXFS25smnD90lHNCSYYLfjKiAP6_J_N-0ByahMNcTtDva5hATchIM_UctvB5qzYIRRdgA2IZFlHnWh0q59YtykmBEJKjsNI23DAAAAAAAAAAA&gl=us&hl=en&sa=title

Can you set up any external hard drive to work on a wireless network?

itismejenn

My entire family uses laptops, we all have our own. It would be nice if we could put our pictures/videos/music/documents on an external hard drive that was somehow attached to our wireless router so that a specific computer wouldn't have to be attached to it all the time. Is this possible?

Thanks in advance

Answer
of course, there are external hard drives called network attached storage devices, or NAS for short. assuming your wireless router has at least one open wired network port, you can attach the NAS there. or, if you have other usb devices (printers, etc) that you would like to share as well, you can get a regular usb external hard drive and a multi port network usb hub, which will allow you to share multiple usb devices over your network.

www.compusa.com has all of the above at reasonable prices.

i m thinking of selling my desktop and buying i pad because i have to switch on and switch off my pc again and again to see my e books and pdf files
i have those pdf files in my android phone as well but its very irritating to read these files on such a small screen
my friend is telling to go for a laptop because i pad does not full fill the desktop requirments completely
so please guys tell me what to do and which thing shall i buy , actually i was willing to go for i pad but its not important that what i want is right , secondly i can go for a good smartphone as well if i can do these things in it but it should be with a big screen
plz help me and suggest me the best option but please be sure it should not be too much expensive
thanx in advance.........:-)

Answer
You already have desktop which you are thinking of selling so definitely it is out of the list because it is better for you to go for new thing. Secondly iPad definitely a nice device but it has certain constraints because of its size and functionality and iPad is not a substitute of laptop as it is designed with different set of features. 3rd is a smartphone which is again same as iPad in a small size. So it makes laptop an ultimate choice. Also you can have multiple benefits by having laptop. I would recommend a good laptop to you which is definitely not much expensive but it has good features. Dell Inspiron i15N-3910BK is a good option to go for.

Look at this for further details:

http://www.amazon.com/Dell-Inspiron-i15N-3910BK-15-Inch-Laptop/dp/B009FX7CGS/ref=zg_bs_565108_4&tag=faowiw-20

Its features include Intel Core i5 3210M 2.6 GHz which is really efficient processor and 6 GB DDR3 RAM. It has 1 TB 5400 rpm Hard Drive for storage and 15-Inch Screen which is not much big which makes it really portable. So overall this is really a good laptop to go for and my vote would be for laptop over other devices.

I would like you to see an actual user comment:

What is the difference between an external desktop HDD and an external portable HDD?

7200 rpm portable hard drive on ... Portable Hard Drive Now Equipped With USB 3.0 And 7200RPM Hard Drive
7200 rpm portable hard drive image

Josh

I am in need of backing up my laptop hard drive and while doing research on external storage, I noticed desktop HDD's are cheaper than the portable ones. What are the key differences between the two? From what i understand, speed is a selling point, but how important is that? I only need one to back my laptop cause starting to go down hill.

Answer
As you say your laptop HDD is going downhill, you'll need to have it replaced and you CANNOT replace it with an external HDD. External HDDs are mostly for backups. Windows cannot boot from an external HDD.

Difference between Desktop and Portable HDD
--------------------------------------------------------------------
The difference is in physical size (dimensions) and operating speed. External desktop HDD are simply the kind of HDD you would find in a desktop PC enclosed in a case with USB or Firewire (1394) connectivity. The same goes for external portable hdd which is simply a laptop hdd in a case.

As for storage capacities, they both have the same capabilities. Operating speed is the difference. A desktop hdd operates at 7200 rpm (rotations per minute). Some newer drives operate at 10,000 rpm. A laptop HDD usually rotates at 5400 rpm. There are two reasons for the lower speed: to increase battery life of the laptop and to reduce heat output/heat generation because higher speeds cause more heat and keeping laptops as cool as possible is paramount.

There are now new HDDs known as Solid State Drives (SSD). These have no moving parts and so require less power and produce very little heat. However, SSDs cost a bit more over a traditional HDDs. At any rate, I'll advise that you go for a portable model as they are smaller in physical size and they still have high capacities; as high as 1 Terabyte (1 Tb)

Good luck.

what is the best type of external hard drive to buy?

brecklynn0

i am looking to buy a external hard drive for my computer and i need to know what the best type to get is. i do not have a huge budget for this so whatever is the least expensive but something that will last. also what size should i get? is a 2 Tb to much?

Answer
2 Tb is almost certainly more than you need. You could store about 1,500 full length DVD-ripped movies on 2 Tb.

In my opinion, the best external hard drive made is the LaCie Rugged All-Terrain USB 3.0 Portable External Hard Drive. It has the following features:

Drop-resistant (not drop-proof though)
"Portable" means that you don't have to plug in a separate power cord
USB 3.0 means that it will be faster with newer computers that have USB 3.0
7200 RPM is the fastest type of external drive

Depending on your budget, here are links for the 500 GB, 750 GB, and 1 TB models:

500 GB: http://www.amazon.com/LaCie-All-Terrain-Portable-External-301930/dp/B003KYYA90/ref=pd_sxp_grid_pt_0_1

750 GB: http://www.amazon.com/LaCie-All-Terrain-Portable-External-301934/dp/B003SO4F3I/ref=pd_sxp_grid_pt_0_0
