I want to reformat my pc which I have no idea how to do, but i'm trying to save downloaded videos and music plus other things and I CAN'T DO IT...

help please...
sometimes i get a message that says ''make sure you specify the correct file name''
ok, how do I get to your computer, just kidding...

well I already plugged the thing in and it says is drive k, when i try to copy anything there ''I CAN'T''

Answer
Hi,

Okay, provided that you have a fully functional portable hard drive and that it is compatible with your PC then it is straight forward to save your stuff.

First, before you start I am assuming that the drive is a USB model and is powered from the USB socket instead of an external power supply.
There is one check you need to do first, plug in the hard drive (HDD) and listen to it, if it makes a soft whirring sound that starts of slowly and builds to a constant soft whirr then it should be powered correctly and you can proceed.
If it instead make lots of little start stop clicks and whirrs then it is not getting it required power from the USB port and you need to change it to a different USB port that will supply the power or run the HDD from and external power supply.

Right, lets assume that you have everything in working order, open Windows Explorer (simplest way is to RIGHT Click on the Start button and select Windows Explorer from the popup list.)

You should see a list of drives attached to you PC, the labelled C: is your primary hard drive, below it you will see icons for the other detected drives, on should look like a CD for your CD/DVD and your removable drive will have a slightly different icon and have a label like E: or F:

Left click on it and you will either see a blank right-hand pane or some system file will be visible.

If you right-click on the portable drive icon a menu will appear and the bottom item should be Properties.
Click on that, a box will appear showing you the details of used and free space on your portable drive, in your case the free space should be close to 500GB, if so then you have the corect drive.

Now right-click on a blank area in the right-hand pane, from the menu that pops up click on New.
From the menu that pops up from that click on Folder.
A New Folder will appear and you can give it a name to suit like Saved Data. then press enter.

You now have a place to store your stuff.

On the left pane, click on the drive called C: and the right-hand pane will show the contents of your PC.
Just navigate to the folder/s where your data is stored, usually under C:\Users\yourLoginName\MyDocuments\Music etc.
once there (i.e. your data is visible in the right-hand pane) you can simply (using the keyboard) press the Ctrl key and whilst still holding it, tap the 'A' key once, this will select ALL the files in that folder.
(you can let go of Ctrl now)

You will know they are selected as the colour of the lines will change.

not that all files are selected you can do two things, either Copy them or Move them.

To Copy them to the portable drive, once again press Ctrl and whilst holding it, tap the 'C' key, this will copy all selected files.
(If you accidentially knocked off the highlighting on the selected files, just redo the previous step)

now click on the folder name you created earlier, it should be highlighted and at this stage contains no files, now just press and hold the Ctrl key and tap 'V' this will paste the files you copied in the last step.

The files will now be copied over to the portable HDD and you will have the originals still on the PC's hard disk.

Just repeat those steps for each folder where you have data stored on your PC that you wish to backup.

The steps outlined above will leave your original files intact and still on your PC, if instead you wish to remove them to the portable drive then use the following keystrokes instead of Ctrl-C, use Ctrl-X (where the X means Cut the files instead of C for Copy)

Now at last you will have a backup of your data.

Just use Explorer to look at the folder/s you crreated on the portable drive and check that all the files are there before you do any feformatting.

If you are unsure about reformatting then it is best to leave it someone who knows what they are doing.

Doing a reformat involves reinstalling the entire operating system and then reinstalling all the applications programs that you use on the PC and setting them up to work the way you want.

Research 'reisntalling the operating system' to see what you are letting yourself in for.

Good Luck.

My Seagate 500gb Expansion Portable Hard Drive suddenly won't turn on!?

Darrien th

I've been using this thing for about a year, and have had no problems whatsoever. I lightly use it (1-2 hours at a time) for storing my composed electronic music. Well after taking a break for about 4 days, I decided to crack back into my songs, and my portable expansion hard drive will not turn on! I've tried multiple outlets, unplugging it, and other methods and the light still won't come on. It's not a computer problem, because, normally, even when the USB is disconnected the green light flashes periodically, and it's not doing that.
Is it possibly the AC Adapter? and if it did fail, is there a way for me to recover all of my expensive AF software and information I've stored on here?

*If you're going to be a d*ck and answer with "Yeah bro seagate sucks" then go somewhere else, that's not what I asked.

Any help is appreciated!

Answer
You could try purchasing another ac adapter to test and see if this is the causing the issue.

In most cases, it's possible to recover the data as long as the hard drive itself hasn't gone bad. You'd need to crack open the case (thus voiding any warranty, but if you've had it for a year or more there probably isn't one now). Inside the case is your usual hard drive that you'd find...Yours is probably a 2.5" SATA since its a portable hard drive (same as whats in a laptop) so you could just buy a SATA to usb cable and plug the HD into your computer and see if you can access the data that way (would work the same way as you normally accessed it).

The cable itself is usually no more than 10 bucks on amazon at max. Hopefully this helps! If the computer doesn't recognize the drive, then there is a much large problem at hand and you could send it to seagate for recovery but it'll cost you a pretty penny to have that done (over 1k) so you have to decide if its worth it.

What is the difference between external and portable hard drives?

a b

Beyond the fact that if you external hard drive was the size of a house it wouldn't be portable? Are there any other differences? Also after I back up my data can I just leave them unplugged and powered down? Or is there some reason they would constantly need power?

Answer
They do the same thing, essentially. Most "portable" hard drives use a 2.5" hard drive, the same sized drive that comes in a laptop for example. External hard drives usually use 3.5" drives, hence the difference in size.

You can also build your own external drive by purchasing a drive and then a cage for the drive. If you were to do this eSATA is your best bet, provided your computer has an eSATA port of course.

External / Portable Hard drive?

PyFa

I don't know anything about it..
but i am planning to buy it..
the more i searched on how to choose the best
the more confuse i get..

what are the things i need to consider to buy a hard drive?
need it for my laptop..
too many files..
what about that rpm and cache stuff..
there is this site that says 7200rpm and 8mb cache is good..

Answer
Questionable Mark, the person above me has suggested you to buy a regular hard drive for desktop computer with its enclosure. A regular hard drive for "desktop computer" is larger than other portable hard drives.

My suggestion is to buy a regular hard drive for "laptop computer", which is much smaller than that of a desktop computer and tell them that you want to use it as an external hard drive. They will enclose that hard drive in a casing that has a USB port. So you can use that as an external hard drive and connect that to your laptop via USB cable. If you wanted to buy a laptop hard drive, see if you could get a segate laptop hard drive. Because Segate is one of the best.

The alternative option is to buy a branded external hard drive. I have WD (Western digital). It is a little pricey but it is good.

Which is the best external hard drives for backups? and software?

paiz310

I currently perform tape backups, but want to move over to backing up to external hard drives. I need to back up about 300GB of data, my exchange store and sql database and a full backup of my C:

Answer
I find internal hard drives are much more reliable. They don't get banged around, have a better power supply, run cooler, they aren't unplugged while they are still writing corrupting the file system, etc.

As you need at least 300 GB of backup. Get a 500 GB or larger external hard drive. I always look for one that is rated 5 stars and has a lot of reviews. A 1000GB external hard drive costs almost as much as three 500GB external hard drives.

Best backup/syncing software for external hard drives?

abdul.monn

Hi, I have bought an external hard drive (Seagate Expansion Portable 500GB) which I want to keep as a backup for my files. Does anyone know of a good software, preferably free, that allows the ability to add files and folders to the software and it automatically syncs and copies all the files in those folders to the external hard drive, and every time I make any changes to the files on the computer, either add new files to a folder, or delete or update documents, then when the software syncs, it updates it to the hard drive as well. Like iTunes I suppose, but also to update say documents if I edited it.
I also want to be able to use the hard drive like normal as well, as in plug it in where ever to access and transfer files to and from.....

Answer
Handy Backup can do it well, it's an easy to use and reliable backup/syncing software for external hard drives.

I want to install windows 7 with my external hard drive?

RyanH

K so my computer has been very weird lately it won't let me run any exercise files and some other stuff like background keeps changing to black from what I previously had it. So I want to reformat my computer and reinstall windows 7. Problem is I don't have a disk computer did not come with it. So how could I go about putting windows 7 on my external hd and installing it from there?

Answer
This question makes no sense at all. If you don't have a Windows disc, how would you install it on an external drive?? None of this means anything anyway because an external disc drive isn't anywhere near fast enough to run an OS.

Restoring Windows 7 from an external hard drive?

Robert

I have two questions-

1. My computer hasn't been working for a while now (don't ask), and after searching long and hard for the answer, I've decided the best thing to do is to do a clean reinstall of Windows 7. But before I do that, I want to know if I can backup certain partitions from my hard drive (not the whole thing) onto an external one. I have an Ubuntu LiveCD to boot up from where I can do all the operations. Is it possible?

2. If I manage to back up the partitions, after reinstalling Windows, how do I get my files and stuff back from the backups on the external hard drive?

Answer
Your question kind of confused me. You said you have other partitions, right? In other Words, you have like a Drive D... Drive E... right? Why would you want or need to back them up? If you do the reinstall on your Drive C.. your other partitions will still be there and untouched so there would be no need to back them up...

After you do your reinstall, your other partitions should be automatically seen by your new Windows install.

I will explain to you how I have my multi-partition... multi drive computer set up. I think that will give you a clearer and better understanding.

I have 3 drives on my computer. The O/S is on Drive C. On the second drive, Drive D, I have my Program Files. Instead of installing all my programs onto Drive C, I install all my Games and programs that don't require being loaded up on boot onto the second drive. The reason I do this is because if I ever need to reinstall the O/S, I won't have to go through all the trouble of also reinstalling every single program and game I have.. they are already installed on a separate partition or drive. In addition to that, having a smaller sized C Drive allows my image backups to be so much smaller. It only takes me about 5 min. to create a new backup of my C Drive. The last drive, Drive E, I relocated from my Documents the folders: My Pictures, My Videos, and My music. Doing this prevents me from losing any of my media files should I my O/S become corrupt.. and also helps to keep the size of my C drive quite small since all media files are offloaded from it.

After you perform a new install, you will have to remember to perform a couple of things to get things running. First, if you have a card reader installed on your computer, each card slot will be labeled with a Drive Letter. It's possible that Windows might give your partitions letters that come AFTER your card reader slots. That's a simple fix... you just go into Disk Management and rename your drive letters... that only takes a few seconds.

The second thing you have resolve is this. If you decide to install programs onto a different drive or partition... 95% of the time they should still work. However, there are a couple of things you need to be aware of. First and formost, you have to go into the install folder for each program and create new shortcuts to the programs. That's simple. Most of my games will still work. However, there you have to be aware that some program will install/store data in hidden folders. There are usually two locations.. the first is C\ProgramData and the second is C\Users\<name>\AppData. Sometimes, these locations contain saved games, profile information, license info, or just data needed to start up the program. What I usually do is create a quick copy of these two folders right before I do another install... and copy over only the files of programs I'll need. It sounds like a lot of work, but it's not.. in fact, it's just routine work... and not that many files actually.

Well, I hope that kind of answered your question.

Question about Verbatim 320 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive 96822 ?

~:;guess;:

Verbatim 320 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive 96822

Now I don't know exactly what the point of the long name is or wat it mean, but I was hoping someone could explain it to me. I understand the 320 GB is the amount of memory I think, but the one thing I dont know is what the 2.0 means. Can someone help me out?

Answer
It's USB version 2.0 . As opposed to USB version 1.1, 1.0, etc.
Portable means it's portable.
Verbatim is the manufacturing company.
External means it's external.. it doesn't go IN your computer..
And 96822 is probably the model number or SKU#.

my portable hard drive dosent work on my computer any more?

i pluged it into the computer and i can see the hard drive starting up but nothing comes up on the computer, i tried going to computer management but nothings there

any1 know what to do???
i have alot of important stuff in there pleasssssssssseeeeeeeeeeee help me

Answer
i hate to say it but it sounds as though the hard drive has reached the end of it's life. does it make a ticking noise?...or perhaps grinding?
there really isn't much you can do. try a system restore. [it probably won't work]

follow this path:

1/ start
2/ all programs
3/ accessories
4/ system tools
5/ system restore

a new window will open. click on "restore my computer to an earlier time" then hit next.
choose a date prior to the start of your problems, and follow prompts. be aware that this will reverse any changes you have made to your pc in the intervening time, but items contained in folders will remain unchanged. when pc reboots it will take a couple of minutes before you can use the desktop and start menu again. this is quite normal and you should not be tempted to try to interrupt the restore process.
if you manage to get the hard drive icon back into "my computer", you should then do a disk check.

follow this path:

1/ start
2/ my computer
3/ right click on hard drive icon and hit "properties"
4/ click on "tools"
5/ click on "error checking" and "check now"
6/ a new window opens, check the boxes for "automatically fix file system errors" and "scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors", click on start.

if you have got this far, then a disk check can take many hours, depending on the size of the disk. you should be allowing around 1 hour per 100 gigs. NEVER INTERRUPT A DISK CHECK!!!...LET IT RUN IT'S COURSE, NO MATTER HOW LONG IT MAY TAKE.

i really hope that this works for you, but i have a feeling it is all over for this drive. in future make sure you have at least 2 back-ups. good luck.

Can I use a regular external hard drive for a mac?

Julia

I just bought a mac and I want to back it up, but I'm not sure if I can buy a regular external hard drive or do I need to buy one that is specific for mac.

Answer
You can connect any USB drive to your mac, you may need to reformat it so the mac can read and write to it.

To do this launch Disk Utilities (Applications>Utilities folder) and click on the icon for the removable hard drive. Select Erase and set format to Mac OS Extended (Journalled).

Some manufacturers sell specific mac hard drives but these tend to cost more - not worth the difference when all you have to do is reformat it.

Can I download a Mac App to an external hard drive?

Coolterp3

I want to download Call of Duty 4 for my Mac but I don't want it to take up my RAM, etc. Am I able to download it straight to my external hard drive and when I want to play it, plug the hard drive in and start it up?

Answer
Sorry, but I wanted to do the same thing. It is not possible to INSTALL anything on an external hard drive not running Mac OSX. In order to do this, you will have to download the game (you can download it to your external hard drive), then install it on the Mac's internal hard drive, THEN drag it back over to the external hard drive. That is the only way, unless you can somehow run Mac OSX on the hard drive.
Hope this helps!

Cheers

Can I attach an external hard drive to my laptop and access the files like they are on my laptop?

Cheryl

My laptop hard drive is almost full. I want to know if I can attach an external hard drive to my laptop and still be able to access the files like they were on my laptop's hard drive? I want to move three years of pictures and videos off my current hard drive, what size hard drive would i need?
i think my hard drive is 80 gb .. all i know is it is saying only 3 gb left in red !!! i thought it was my pictures using up all the space but when i selected all it said only 30 mb ... so i don't really know why my hard drive is used up ???

Answer
Yes. Anything similar to these will work fine:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_0_12?url=search-alias%3Delectronics&field-keywords=usb+portable+hard+drive&sprefix=usb+portable

I purposely searched for drives powered by a usb port, instead of drives that need an additional external power supply. With a laptop, who needs another cord?

What size would depend on how much you need to move. Sorry, no psychic ability here, lol. How big is the HDD you have now? I'd personally go for nothing smaller than 500GB. Better to have too much space, than not enough.

Also, you should always have at least 2 copies of important files. What if your HDD in your laptop went belly up? Do you have a backup copy somewhere? If not, you can kiss those videos and photos goodbye.

could anybody tell me what kind of usb cable needs to be purchased for a sea gate portable 500gb external?

what kind of usb cable be specific please (hard drive)

Answer
you can use any USB cable that has same heads
like this one: (only the big ones)

or if the Portable Hard Disk has a small USB interface then you need like those: (look at the USB in the HDD to see which one fits)

Question about hard drive again?

Kin

Hey ppl.. I'm a pro photographer/videographer and my laptop I use currently has used all its C Drive space, well I was looking at prices for an external/portable hard drive.. I found 500gb for $60 at walmart.. so I figured I'd transfer the things from my laptop to the external drive, however I am very paranoid because I do not want to lose my work, and just the thought of it being off my original laptop makes me nervous.. so say I transfer it to my external drive.. and then say I want to put it back on my original laptop, how do I do this? How do I make sure everything will be on the external drive?
Ok... and say I transfer everything from my laptop to the hard drive, and the USB stick is still plugged in... but then I delete the original images off my computer, how does that work? Is it still on my computer, just on the USB port?

I'm confused, tell me how it works, I got 4,000 images and 60 Hi Def videos I don't want to lose

Answer
Select what you want to transfer to the external device.
Right click on it and select copy.
View the external drive in My Computer.
Paste what you have copied into a directory on the external drive.

If you delete it from the original location, it will stay on the external drive. This is not an automated backup process which examines what is in each location and synchronizes the contents of both. This is simply a copy you created.

Once you copy something from your C drive and paste it onto the external device, and you delete it from the C drive, it will be there on the external device regardless of what computer you plug that external device into. Thus, you can take that external device with you to a friend's house, plug it into their computer, and access your pictures from there.

end of line

Thanks but im trying to stay around or under $550 planning to upgrade later.

Answer
Some I like. Some issues.
The A6-5400K APU with 7540D either loses the graphics, or can get microstuttering issues with HD 6670 in dual graphics. It pairs only with HD 6570, and that is a weak result either way.

About a Tier 7.

The HDD is small and SATA II instead of SATA III
The ram is OK and motherboard not terrible, but it is a waste with more than one PCIe x 16 slot
OS Windows 7 home premium 64 bit is better. Any custom build should use that. It uses less ram and easier to use.
The power supply is good.
HD 6670 is a 2012 entry gaming standard. HD 7750 is the 2013, but with that CPU, you bottleneck.

I learned that your price is exactly where laptops and desktops, each bought for best value, have equal performance. The Desktop is upgradable; the laptop includes an LCD and is portable.

You do not show a computer case or DVDRW.
The 6670 assumes the cheaper lower performance 1GB DDR3, unless specifically showing it as GDDR5.

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/10ciM
Shows cost of parts is $447

Looking at the system, the simplest way to say this, is that the price is good for what it is, but the CPU is too weak and everything but the power supply is over-trimmed to get there.

Look, here is $519 delivered (yours probably adds delivery).

The CPU is more for video editing than gaming, but still is tier 3. There is 8GB RAM and a TB HDD. Same HD 6670. Has a weird cheap high power power supply, and a fairly cheap motherboard. As a whole, it is notably better than what you show. At least you don't get the CPU bottlenecking.

The G2020 is better than A6-5400K
1TB is better than 500MB HDD
But if you are buying and upgrading, get a refurb or open box and start with FX-4170 or an i3 3rd gen if possible
Adding:
That start of a system costs too much to upgrade.
Start with this:
www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883220217
change the power supply when you add a graphics card.
Look through newegg and amazon
Get to a cpu in the top 3 tiers or #4 at the worse by Toms Hardware.
Prepare to change the power supply and graphics card
Prefer bottom mount PSU cases
Have 8GB RAM and 1TB if possible
Your upgrade to that system is a new CPU that will still be weak, and more ram and a new HDD.
The system you propose is not an easy upgrade.

when will we have a Petabyte be available in the market and what Impact will it do.?

Q. I personally believe I can never have enough memory. I currently have about 100 gigs of pure audio digital music, 2 tb of many many movies (1 tb was dedicated only to 1080p format which I only have about 87 titles). I have a circle of geeky friends that do file sharing. I usually go to their house and transfer data, I have another 1TB dedicated to TV shows, and what is funny I hardly download anything, I usually have a digital copy of my movies and I transfer that to my Hard Drives, and my friends will provide me with a lot of different media.

I now own about 6 TB's of total data information and I am still growing. And am the only one in the neighborhood who probably enjoys the most out of my Computer, when I visit my next door neighbor her DVD collection is vast and she has a library of physical books with Twilight, Rising Fire, Wimpy Kid, Castle in The Sky, and of course potter books. but her computer only has music and very little movies, on a 500 gig Laptop which she thinks is a lot, but I Dwarf hers in comparison, she or her husband comes to me for some movies time to time to share with them for their kids to watch and I gladly help them by putting digital video I own into a single layer dvd format so they can play it for their kids or themselves. I'm am pretty open guy and I'm the one usually help friends or family with what they want to watch or little computer problems.

Well let's get back about my question....

I would be willing to buy a $1,000 or even $4,000 worth of memory that amounts up to 1 Petabyte.
Thing is when will something like that be Affordable? even cheap as $4k?

I remember in the 90's 2 or 4 gigs of hard drive capacity was a big deal.
and when we entered in the early 2000's 50-80 gigs was big deal.
it's 2012 and most computers have 1tb or 2tb.
will we have similar growth in 2022 for computers to have up 100tb or 150tb? or will it grow exponentially and have up to 500TB to 1PB Not sure given to the past.

But when do you think the Petabyte will be available for a pocket size memory like they do with the 1tb nowadays?

I think we'll have one by 2028. :)

I can't see that far ahead but with ONE PB in your pocket what will that mean?

Information could grow bigger and the need for more memory will be in demand!

we would need a special connection cuz I don't think USB 3.0 or Fire wire 800 will cut it even Thunderbolt. So a Super Data Transfer-er USB 10.0.

Movie data will be larger. a blu ray format 1080p of Lord f the Rings is so huge it required almost all of a dual layer blu ray disc of 50 gigs to compact all that definition. So as for movie data being larger. 4K is on the Horizon and 8K as well. We do NOT have the components yet to even acquire that format. A film for 4K I think 100 gigs would suffice to jam pack that Definition for just one Film, and as for 8K it would be double. So what I am saying here is that 1 movie could potentially be as big as 80-100 gigs of Ultra-Definition Meaning you could only pack up to 10-15 Movies per 1TB, which is not a lot media but you'll have the best looking format in you portable Hard Drive.

I have not clue for Video games but for that department I believe Hard Drive Storage will be a great Factor. and of course SSD will be the standard. not HDD.

I could go on and on but what do you think?

Answer
They just recently got 1TB into a flash drive you can buy. And even then, it costs over $1,000.
There has been technology somewhere that said that you could hold 60 TB in a very small amount of space, but I read it a while ago so I forgot.
Right now, a one PB SSD would cost a million dollars at $1 per GB.
You would also need a gigantic raid array and a huge room for all of the SSDs
required in a RAID array.
So I'm thinking that even thought the technology to do it is almost available, you won't be getting one in the next 10 years with that price and size.

What does Staples do with hard drives removed from repaired computers?

Cari

My hard drive needed to be replaced due to a virus. I had to buy a new hard drive because it was $239 to transfer data from the old one and transfer to new drive. What will happen to my old drive and all the private, personal information and family photos that is on it?

Answer
You don't get a hard drive replaced just because you have a virus on it. Either they scammed you or you misunderstood them and the hard drive is defective. Many times, people mistake problematic software or a hardware problem with a virus or other malware.

Anyway, if you buy a new hard drive from them, then they should be able to recover what they can from the old hard drive (unless the hard drive is completely dead) and put the old data on the new drive.
Make sure that you tell them that you want your old files copied over to the new drive.

I think that the old drives get recycled. You usually don't have to worry about identity theft or other problems because the technicians usually don't waste their time on scanning all the data on your hard drive for things like that. Most technicians aren't scumbags.

Notes:
For data that can't be replaced (e.g. family photos, videos), you should save them to blank DVDs or even Blu-ray discs if you have a Blu-ray writer. Make 2 copies of each disc and store them in 2 different places for even better protection. Just make sure that your disc writing software is set to verify the data after it is written to the disc.

NEVER keep personal data on a phone or computer (especially a portable computer like a laptop).
What if it gets stolen? Your friend's and family's contact information won't be interesting to a thief, but some people store passwords, credit card information, bank card information, and other things like that on their computers.

Help! Question about External vs Portable hard drive?

Its Me

I'm about to go to Staples and I desperately need the Anwers! community's help! I'm pretty knowledgable about software and internet stuff, but I'm totally dumb when it comes to hardware, so I need you to help me pick the best item for my needs. Here's my situation.

My computer: Dell Optiplex 755 PC with 74.4 GB harddrive and Windows XP.

I don't have (and don't want) a lap top, so the only way to move files from place to place is with a flash drive (I have a 16GB). I live half the year in one state and then the other half of the year in another state. I have a monitor at both places, so I have to take my harddrive tower back and forth with me. I also have my computer cram packed with photos and video (I'm a photographer/videographer) and though I back up everything on discs, I HATE having to go through all of those discs to find anything. I want to be able to keep a copy of all of that stuff on my computer for easy access, and to able to easily transport it all.

SO..... there are three things on sale at Staples that I believe might help and I need you guys to choose the BEST one for me (these are the only options so please don't recommend "better" things):

IOMEGA PRESTIGE 1TB External Hard Drive
[This has a very sleek and small casing - easy to move]

SEAGATE GOFLEX 500GB Portable Hard Drive

IOMEGA EGO 320GB Portable Hard Drive

Prices are irrellivant to me.

So, I know the 1TB is great, but it is an external hard drive... vs. the PORTABLE 500GB and 320GB hard drives. Is it better for me to have a portable or external?

OK... and second question.... do I just plug these in to my main hard drive tower with a USB or something? I mean, maybe the issue over external vs. portable is irrellivant if they are both easy-plug-in by USB because the external unit is easily portable. But I don't know about these things. Does the external unit have to internally wired into my main harddrive?

I'm so confused I do not know what to do..... and we are leaving in 25 minutes to go to Staples so it's now or never.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP!!!!!
Just to reinterate...
I have a DESK TOP - not a LAP TOP.

Answer
The portable is just smaller in size, with less capacity.

The external is often used for people with desktops whose computers don't really move. You can use them with laptops though.

Both accomplish the same thing though. And yes you attach them via USB.

That said, my vote is for the Seagate 500gb Portable HDD based on what I know of Seagate and its reputation.

Is there a portable hard drive compatible with the Kindle Fire?

Sam

Answer
Hello,

Para is not informed.

Seagate makes a portable drive called Goflex Satellite that works with Android Tablets, iPads, iPhones and Android phones. The drive holds up to 500gb and can be shared thru Wi-Fi with up to 3 devices at one time. It also has a USB 3 port to transfer your data when you are at your computer. Here is a link to a review of the drive.

Is there a programme you can insert onto a portable hard drive that allows you to search?

Dan

I am aware that on both PC's and Mac's there is already a function that allows this, normally a wee search bar, but i have been commissioned by my boss to have a programme anyway. A sort of 'mini-google' to plough through the frankly massive image database we have collected over the years. Is it at all possible?

Cheers

Answer
Hey Dan:

Try diskMeta I use it to manage 6tb worth of files. Mostly vector graphics art, hd video animation files and hd images

I use this in conjunction with a 3rd party defrag program called diskeeper to keep the integrity of the disks at an optimum level because the built-in windows defragmentor could not keep up.

My 3rd party defragmentor can be set to run automatically and transparently so if the goal is to find files quickly, on demand, every time like it is for me this works out pretty good.

Knowledge is power so check out these links and read up to see if they're what you're looking for

Which USB cable does Lacie Hard Disk external hard drive use?

Drunkobra

I have a Lacie Hard Disk design by Neil Poulton external hard drive. I need a USB 2.0 cable to use it, but I can't figure out which. The regular size USB is too thick and doesn't fit in the drive. I've looked for a while but I can't find any USB cable that has one side the standard USB size to go into the computer and the other side a bit thinner to go into the hard drive. Is this what I even need? Help!? I'd really appreciate any help with this. Thank you.

Answer
The drive came with a USB cable, can you find the original?
There is more than one Poulton designed drive. The desktop models (the ones with a power adapter to plug into the mains) use a standard square-ish USB "B" connector, just like a printer. The Computer has the A connector, flatter, wider rectangle. The standard A to B cable will work. http://img.systemaxdev.com/productmedia/htmlimages/cten/Lacie/142241-back.jpg

If you have a portable LaCie drive, then it could have a USB Mini-B or Micro-B connector.

Can I transfer my itunes library from my PC to a portable hard drive?

tattaglia2

My PC is getting slow becasue my itunes library is very large. How can I move my music without losing it to a portable hard drive. Also if you can tell me where will new music go after I have transfered the music. (I'm new to iTunes)

Answer
Your hard drive getting full would not slow down the computer unless your hard drive had next to no free space left (meaning less than a couple GB). It's insufficient RAM that slows the computer down (and having lots of programs open at once), not a full hard drive. Defragment your hard drive and that should solve most of your problems.

If you really want to transfer the songs to the external, just go to your Music folder (C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\My Documents\My Music in XP, C:\Users\<username>\Music in Vista and Windows 7) and copy the iTunes folder over to the external hard drive.

In iTunes, open up the settings menu and go to "Advanced". The first option there is the location of the iTunes library. Change that to the place that now has the music and you're all set.

Answer
Between the two, I would get the Samsung R720 because it has a superior processor and larger hard drive.

Honestly though, those are two lousy laptop choices. I could give you a recommendation if you stated your budget and what you need the laptop for. For example, you can find better ones with smaller screens (trust me, 17" for a laptop makes for one non-portable computer).

So if I were you, I would browse Amazon.com for a computer with:

At least a 4-star rating and more than 10 reviews.
An intel core2 duo processor.
Dedicated graphics, preferably at least as good as GeForce9400M if you want graphics to look nice
4 GB RAM if you want one with Vista
At least 1280x800 screen resolution for a 13", larger for larger screens
Long batter life

I would recommend a MacBook for various reasons (total cost of ownership, quality of hardware, the operating system) but since it is so different from your listings maybe it wouldn't meet some of your specific needs.

So look around, find a nice 15" laptop (those are plenty big) with highish resolution and the specs I listed above, and make sure you can get a free Windows 7 upgrade (or just wait until laptops start coming out with Windows 7).

I was instructed by a video guide to use the NZXT Source 210 USB 3.0 Mid Tower Chassis with 1x 120/140mm Fan, but as I am making a gaming PC I would like a better case that looks better also. could I use cases like a http://www.amazon.co.uk/BitFenix-Prodigy-Mini-ITX-Geh%C3%A4use-Netzteil/dp/B008BZYJ6W/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1378489628&sr=8-1&keywords=BitFenix+Mini-ITX+Tower+Case+Arctic+White+BFC-PRO-300-WWXKW-RP , CiT Vantage Type-R Gaming Case with HD Audio, 4 Fans, Card Reader and No PSU - Black or a http://www.amazon.co.uk/Cooler-Master-RC-430-KWN1-Elite-Window/dp/B003OEDJTI/ref=sr_1_14?ie=UTF8&qid=1378489755&sr=8-14&keywords=gaming+pc+case any help much appreciateded and basically I want to know if it will still fit the same :)

Answer
The quality of a case is overrated. I built my first gaming machine in a case that cost $20. In hindsight I consider it a mistake because the included fans were REALLY noisy, but it didn't affect the performance of the computer. The only time the case becomes a question mark is if it uses an ITX motherboard, like your BitFenix Prodigy, but it sounds like it will work just fine. The hard drive cage can be removed so you can fit a big graphics card inside. I use an XFX Radeon HD 7850 2GB. It's a MASSIVE card, but one of the reviews for the case on Newegg specifically mentions that card fitting in the case. But if you do go with the BitFenix make sure to keep an eye on the temperature in the case. It might work just fine with the two included fans, but the product description mentions watercooling features quite a bit, as does the review that mentioned the 7850. If your system overheats then you might need to consider watercooling.

The second case looks plenty big enough, just not quite as portable as the first.

External portable hard drive?

Mommy MiMi

I am working between two differ computers . One at home & one at work, I need the same files on both computers. I need to share Microsoft Office & my pictures between the two. I need to work on the same images & documents at home & work. Would an eternal portable hard drive work for me? It would be so convent to just keep the pics & documents on something else like the portable hard drive, but I am clueless. Thanks for any help.

Answer
hey mimi that would work if you want you can just load them off the harddrive that way.

as an alternative amazon.com has 5gigs of free cloudspace - meaning you can upload whatever files/documents you want online and have access to them anywhere.

i would personally prefer a portable hard drive/usb thumb drive for privacy reasons/not wanting my stuff on the net. :)

Furthermore if your work doesnt have microsoft office there is a free program set called "OpenOffice" that you can download and its the same as m$ office just FREE.

What is with my external hard drive?

This is the hard drive I got for christmas.

When I plugged it in to my laptop, after a while, it said it was installed and ready to use. When I go to "my computer", it isn't there, but it is in my "devices and printers". It's like a ghost. My computer says it's there, but I can't get to it. One of the reasons I wanted it was because it was "plug and play".

I tried to find a solution. Some said I had to format it, but I can't format it because it doesn't show up in "my computer". I really need this hard drive to work. I need the extra space. Any help at all is appreciated.

Answer
drivers maybe properly installed.. if your external hard drive is brand new.. you should return it for replacement, since I expect warranty is still intact.

on the otherhand, if your external drive is about 6months old or more, could be that your USB port does not read your hard drive properly. or your external hard drive usb wire is not working properly. try using another wire to your usb port. also, you can try plugging it in another usb port.

if it shows your hard drive on devices and printer, it means, that the driver was installed properly.

if all else fails, maybe your external hard drive is dying.

looking for a portable hard drive that works seamlessly between mac/pc. I work on both.?

trouble

Answer
Pretty much any USB portable hard drive that is Plug-and-Play Compliant will work on both Macs and PCs, providing you use a file system that works on both. NTFS is the standard for PCs, but Macs can only read files in that file system, not write them. A file system that will work with both Macs and PCs is FAT32. You can format your hard drive to FAT32 using Windows, just google it. A recommended hard drive for you is this one:

How do I transfer my iTunes from my PC to my Mac via a portable hard drive?

ericangelo

I'm not the most computer savvy person, so I'd really appreciate specific details on how to do this. Thank you so much in advance!

Answer
I'm not nearly as experienced with PC's as with Macs, so here goes. I'm going to assume that you have copied at least some files from your PC onto a portable hard drive, but if not then try this. First make sure that the external hard drive is connected and recognized on the PC. Do a search if necessary and find the iTunes music folder on your PC hard drive. Once you have done that select the iTunes music folder and either choose to move it, save it, or copy it to the external hard drive or as can be done easily on a Mac click it and drag it to the external hard drive to copy it there. Once that is complete you can then properly eject the external hard drive from the PC and connect it to your Mac. When you do and it shows up on the Mac desktop simply open iTunes and choose "Add to library" under "File" in the menubar in iTunes and in the window that opens navigate to the external hard drive and to the folder labeled "iTunes Music." Then click okay/import and iTunes will find all of the music files on the external drive and copy them to the proper location on you Mac hard drive. Then you are finished and you can do whatever you like with the music on the external hard drive. You may even select the iTunes folder on the external hard drive and drag it to the Mac trash and empty the trash.

Will a USB 3.0 portable hard drive work on my Windows XP PC using an adaptor for a USB 2.0 port?

Donna

I have an older Windows XP laptop and it only has USB 2.0 ports. I'd like to get another portable Hard Drive to use with it, but most are the newer USB 3.0 drives. Is there an adaptor I could use with my older laptop/USB 2.0 port to connect and use a USB 3.0 portable hard drive that would work successfully?

Answer
No adapter is needed.
USB 3.0 is directly backwards compatible with both USB 2.0 and USB 1.1/1.0

Just plug and play, that's all you need to do.

However, note that the actual data access and transfer will take place at the slower USB 2.0 speed, not at the fast USB 3.0 speed.

I have a few questions:
1). Will this hard drive allow me to copy files from both Windows and Mac onto it,
2). Will this hard drive allow me to backup both a Windows and Mac onto it
3). Does it come with backup software?
4). Is it USB Bus powered?

(Note: The Computers I have are:
Windows XP
And
Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3)

Answer
"(Note: The Computers I have are:
Windows XP
And
Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3)"
Not. Those are the software systems, not the computers. Example of a computer is MacBook Pro 2.4GHz quad-core i7 2012.

All HDDs are the same for your questions, so this answer is for all HDDs in the world including your LaCie.

1). Will this hard drive allow me to copy files from both Windows and Mac onto it,
A: The HDD has nothing to say about what you copy. The format and the driver control that. The Apple driver for NTFS format is read-only, so you have to add software, such as Paragon NTFS For Mac, to enable write (means copy, move, rename) to the HDD. Alternately, you could format the drive for "Mac OS Extended" and buy either "MacDrive" or "TransMac" for Windows to be able to use it, but the Paragon NTFS For Mac software is cheaper. You could expand your brain a bit beyond initial cost and realize that the Mac format (used with OS 10.2 or later, even more so with OS 10.3 or later) is more efficient and more resistant to fragmentation than any format from Microsoft. Alternate plan would be install HFSExplorer in Windows to enable read (copying) from Mac formatted volumes, create two partitions on the HDD, when in Windows add files to the NTFS volume, and in OS X add files to the Mac volume. Then you can copy from NTFS when in Os X, and copy from Mac format when in Windows -- total cost of extra software = zero.

2). Will this hard drive allow me to backup both a Windows and Mac onto it
Apple's backup software is "Time Machine". That needs "Mac OS Extended" format. I don't use any backup software with Windows, but I would bet a dollar to a doughnut it needs NTFS format. To use one HDD with both backup strategies, create two partitions on the HDD, and format two file systems.

3). Does it come with backup software?
The HDD? Ask the maker.

4). Is it USB Bus powered?
I have never heard of any HDD case without a USB port except a NAS. If your Mac has Firewire 800, get a case with that connection also, because it is much faster than USB. LaCie shows a graph of speed comparison for USB and FW, but it is bunk, because in real-life use, USB never performs up to its theoretical maximum specs. It takes 2-3 times as long to copy a 1 GB movie file through USB 2.0 as it does through FW 800.

The links below are for top quality HDD and case that I use with my Macs. The HDD is fast (7200 RPM), the case is flexible (four connection options) and will dissipate heat well (aluminum not plastic). To get a 1 TB 7200 RPM in aluminum case from LaCie, you buy the "Enterprise" at $299.

Is Formatting An External Portable Hard Drive To exFAT The Best Way To Transfer Files Between Mac & Windows?

Ollie

I have a mac laptop and a windows 7 desktop and I was wondering if formatting a drive to exFAT was the best way to transfer my files across?

Answer
Format it NTFS. exFAT does't work on some drives and makes them either really slow or not able to transfer any data. I have tried this out on a bunch of drives

CAN I BACK UP MY PC FILES WITH MAC PORTABLE HARD DRIVE?

Paul

I have windows 7 now,but I plan to own a Mac soon. Would a Mac hard drive back up windows files too?

Answer
The answer to this is complicated, but I found a good article here: http://thelightroomlab.com/2009/01/formatting-an-external-hard-drive/

You should read it carefully (maybe twice) to learn about disk formats, it is a very good thing to know about. Learning to format your hard drives properly is a great idea. Also, partitioning your drive into 2 sections with different formats works if you don't need to access files across Operating Systems. You can use Google to learn how to partition a drive on your Operating System fairly easily. I usually just use Dropbox to send files from my Mac to my PC or vice versa.

How to format portable hard drive for mac and PC, using a MAC?

Jake

I have some files on my MAC that I would like to put onto my hard drive so I can use them on my PC. So I believe I would need to have the hard drive formatted for both computers (to be able to move the files). I will need to do the formatting on my MAC so if any one could help me that would be greatly appreciated. I would assume I'd use the 'disk utility' on my MAC to do the formatting (or if you have another recommendation).

Answer
All of my portable drives are formatted for windows and they work on my Mac.

When I plug my seagate portable hard drive to my mac it wont let me save files, how can I fix this?

41

I have two seagate portable hard drives and when I plug them into my imac it wont let me save anything on them, I do not have this issue with my pc, it lets me save and access all files. With my Imac however it will only let me view and use the files that are already on it and not save new files.

Answer
The drives are formatted NTFS: that's Windows' partition format and while Mac's can read NTFS, they can't write to them. You would need to back up all the files on the external drive and reformat it as FAT32 - both Windows and OS X can read/write FAT32 drives, but you will be limited to 4GB per file on the drive.

There are also utilities that let OS X write to a NTFS drive. They are cheap, but I don't know of any free ones.

Can some one help me with my new Portable Hard Drive [several questions really ; Mac]?

jx2_117

I got a SeaGate portable Hard Drive. And i have a Mac. i just want to use it as a giant Flash Drive and not is a backup disk and i got several questions about it:

1. Can i treat the hard drive as a USB or is it for back up purposes only?

2. There's a whole bunch of stuff already in it and i think it's installation for Windows. what do i do with it?

3.i read online that i can use Disk utility to erase the stuff on it [because the disk cant be modified i can't move the files to the trash]

4. Should i do what Time Machine backup tells me to do?

5. How can i get it to work more like a Flash Drive than a back up disk.

i'm sorry if i sound stupid / asked a stupid question. it's my first time buying a portable hard drive and using Time Machine. Thanks for your help.

this is the Hard Drive

Answer
1. If you can connect it to Mac and it recognizes it, you can use it any way you want, provided the format of your drive is HFS+ or FAT, or a bunch of other rare formats that might work. There is only read support for NTFS - but there are programs that allow you to get write access too. If that is what you need, try MacFuse (it's free) to get access to your NTFS drive.

2. If you need that Windows stuff, keep it, burn it to dvd for backup or trasnfer it to your Mac's hard drive. It seems from what you say that you should keep it. My recomendations on what to do are in #5. Otherwise, delete it.

3. Yes, you can do that. If your disk can't be modified it can be because Mac doesn't support write access to NTFS formatted drives - see above, #1. And Disk Utility can format your drive - it was one of the reasons it was made.

4. No, or at least not yet. Time Machine is a beast - an aquaintance of mine discovered Time machine fills up every bit of space it has access to in the place it is told to back up to the hard way - his portable hard drive was full of Time Machine's backups when he wanted to store some files on it for himself.

5. This is my recommendations. If you wish to purely use it as a flash drive, take out the important files, and go ahead, wipe the drive completely and format it to FAT or MSDOS, whichever appears in Disk Utility. If you wish to use as both a flash stick and a backup, it gets hairier. Take out every file, go to Disk Utility, select the Portable Drive and under Partitions, split it into two partitions (pick wisely the size of each). You may or may not have to format to HFS+ (because Mac might not allow to make Time Machine backups to non-Apple-formatted media). Now in one partition put your files for your flash-stick part of the drive and on the other one, follow the instructions Time Machine gives you but set Time Machine to back up to that partition. Be extra careful - If it says to you that it wishes to use the entire drive, don't go ahead.

External hard drive??????

Rostislav

Can you take out the hard drive from a external hdd and put it in a laptop. the hdd from it is a 2.5 7200 rpm 60gb

Answer
Mostly No, except for a few exceptions, the hard drive in an external portable drive is too large (not in capacity but in physical size) to fit in the hard drive space of a laptop. . Even the thinner external drives are probably too large. A laptop hard drive is usually built into a 2 3/4 - 3 1/2" inch credit card size like case, with several pins attached to the internal cables connected to the hard drive. The hard drive in an external is connected to a USB socket that is attached to the hard drive connector on the circuit board inside the external hd case. You cannot simply remove the drive and expect it to work inside the laptop. It wont screw up your motherboard, it just wont read if you some how create some kind of cable to convert the signal. External harddrives are considered slave drives and would only be recognized as a partitioned drive (removable storage drive) but you would need the main hard drive on the laptop to even detect it.

Is there a 7200 RPM USB Hard drive?

WoodyS

I am told I need a fast hard drive for a particular application on my Windows 7 machine. 7200 RPM is suggested. Does anyone make a fast USB 7200 RPM hard drive?

Answer
Virtually all 3,5ich hard drives for desktop systems are 7200RPM. The fastest consumer "internal" desktop models use 10000RPM. "Raptors"

Laptops either use slower 5400RPM 2.5 inch disks or some now have 7200RPM also.

Some USB external drives are 7200RPM and some [particularly portable external drives for laptops with no external power supply] are 5400RPM. It is always clearly marked on the packaging.

The WesternDigital MyBook series are all 7200RPM and are very good performance and good value too. Plenty of different sizes [500GB up to 3TB] and both USB 2 and faster USB 3 models if your system supports USB 3. See here: http://www.wdc.com/en/products/external/desktop/
