Beyond the fact that if you external hard drive was the size of a house it wouldn't be portable? Are there any other differences? Also after I back up my data can I just leave them unplugged and powered down? Or is there some reason they would constantly need power?

They do the same thing, essentially. Most "portable" hard drives use a 2.5" hard drive, the same sized drive that comes in a laptop for example. External hard drives usually use 3.5" drives, hence the difference in size.
You can also build your own external drive by purchasing a drive and then a cage for the drive. If you were to do this eSATA is your best bet, provided your computer has an eSATA port of course.

Questionable Mark, the person above me has suggested you to buy a regular hard drive for desktop computer with its enclosure. A regular hard drive for "desktop computer" is larger than other portable hard drives.
My suggestion is to buy a regular hard drive for "laptop computer", which is much smaller than that of a desktop computer and tell them that you want to use it as an external hard drive. They will enclose that hard drive in a casing that has a USB port. So you can use that as an external hard drive and connect that to your laptop via USB cable. If you wanted to buy a laptop hard drive, see if you could get a segate laptop hard drive. Because Segate is one of the best.
The alternative option is to buy a branded external hard drive. I have WD (Western digital). It is a little pricey but it is good.
