is and external hard drive hard to configure with exzisting hard drive, what is the format in useing the two drives together...? does external automatically work with the one that is internal with the computer?

Answer
Yes they will work together, install the second drive as the slave drive, if using an external it's much easier just plug it in, format and you're ready for data

I was instructed by a video guide to use the NZXT Source 210 USB 3.0 Mid Tower Chassis with 1x 120/140mm Fan, but as I am making a gaming PC I would like a better case that looks better also. could I use cases like a http://www.amazon.co.uk/BitFenix-Prodigy-Mini-ITX-Geh%C3%A4use-Netzteil/dp/B008BZYJ6W/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1378489628&sr=8-1&keywords=BitFenix+Mini-ITX+Tower+Case+Arctic+White+BFC-PRO-300-WWXKW-RP , CiT Vantage Type-R Gaming Case with HD Audio, 4 Fans, Card Reader and No PSU - Black or a http://www.amazon.co.uk/Cooler-Master-RC-430-KWN1-Elite-Window/dp/B003OEDJTI/ref=sr_1_14?ie=UTF8&qid=1378489755&sr=8-14&keywords=gaming+pc+case any help much appreciateded and basically I want to know if it will still fit the same :)

Answer
The quality of a case is overrated. I built my first gaming machine in a case that cost $20. In hindsight I consider it a mistake because the included fans were REALLY noisy, but it didn't affect the performance of the computer. The only time the case becomes a question mark is if it uses an ITX motherboard, like your BitFenix Prodigy, but it sounds like it will work just fine. The hard drive cage can be removed so you can fit a big graphics card inside. I use an XFX Radeon HD 7850 2GB. It's a MASSIVE card, but one of the reviews for the case on Newegg specifically mentions that card fitting in the case. But if you do go with the BitFenix make sure to keep an eye on the temperature in the case. It might work just fine with the two included fans, but the product description mentions watercooling features quite a bit, as does the review that mentioned the 7850. If your system overheats then you might need to consider watercooling.

The second case looks plenty big enough, just not quite as portable as the first.

Personally I would go with the Western Digital drive. It has better reviews and I know from personal experience that Seagate support isn't the greatest.

It was working fine and when I turned it on the screen wouldn't come up. I was finally able to get an error message that said the hard drive needs to be replaced. My Hp laptop is only a year old. I want to know how much it would cost also if I could just buy a portable external hard drive for it, if that would help. Thanks in advance for your help..:)

Answer
The problem with buying an external hard drive is how to make it bootable. This is because it wont be listed in the BIOS settings. A new 250GB internal hard disk can be bought on Ebay for around £30.

Hope this helps.

Can I format an old hard drive with my Mac without losing everything?

best external hard drives of 2011 image

I own a Seagate Freeagent external hard drive. I once used it with my PC, but now I have a Mac, so I can't write anything new onto it. I'd like to reformat so that I can start backing up again, but what I've been reading says that I can't do that without losing everything already on the drive. I can't backup onto my Mac, either, because there's not enough room. So, what are my options here?

Answer
No, formatting a drive erases everything on it.

I haven't tried this myself because I don't own a Mac but there seems to be some work-around solutions that will allow your Mac to use an external Windows NTFS format drive. However, attempting this is entirely at your own risk.

Answer
You need to run Football Manager 2011 in RAM, not in an external hard drive.

Hi, I am looking for a new mac computer for work. There it is connected to a big server and I want to use it a lot for photoshop, illustrator and indesign.
What I all ready found:

iMac 27 inch
3.4 GHz quad core Intel i7
RAM 16GB 1600 MHz DDR3 (Maybe with 32GB?)
Fusion drive 1 TB (128 Flash memory + 872 HDD)
Nvidia GeForce GTX 675MX 1 GB DDR5

and

Mac Pro
Two 2.40GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon
12GB DDR3
1TB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s hard drive
ATI Radeon HD 5770 1GB

Wich one should you suggest? Or maybe you have other suggestions?

Thanks
(Mac Pro is the desktop computer from apple, not to be confused with the Macbook Pro)

Answer
well if your are not bothered about being portable then i would go for the imac. the mac pro may be easily upgraded but it has not been updated in years and i now far less powerful than the imac. you could maybe even consider a mac mini as these may be the cheapest mac on the market but they would still be pretty good for photoshop. whatever you get make sure that you pay for all the extras so that it is at the highest possible spec. in the long run it will make a big difference.

I am looking to purchase an external hard drive for my computer and want to know which brand is best?

Sandra L

am looking at the portable hard drives with 500gb and there are many brands and I am unsure which ones are good ones and which ones to stay away from. They are all in the same price range. They are samsung, toshiba, western digital, a-data, lacie, seagate and dane-elec. Any info on these would be helpful.

Answer
The interface matters the most and you probably want 7200 RPM instead of 5400 RPM, unless you use the external hard drive infrequently and want to save power. Do you have e-SATA, firewire ports, or USB 3.0 ports? Note that USB 2.0 is standard now and few people have 3.0 yet.

Any recommendation on external hard drive for computers?

llyybbss

I have so many music and movies in my computer. I think it's time for me to purchase a external hard drive. Any recommendation on what to get and where to get it? Should I purchase it on-line or in store?

Answer
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822204083

Things to consider:

The 3.5" versions are larger and are the same laptop hard drives as those found in full sized desktop computers, They require an external power adapter, but are cheaper for the amount of memory they can hold. They require a stable surface and it also prevents them from moving around as much, giving them a longer life span.

The 2.5" versions are the same types found in laptops. They don't hold as much data as the 3.5" but they are portable and only need to be connected via USB (less commonly the SATA port). Portability means more expense and unfortunately since they get moved around, a higher chance (from a low overall chance) of data corruption

Depending on how much music and videos you have, a 1 TB should last you quite a while.

I recommend NewEgg because the prices are competitive and there are ratings from users. If not, Amazon.com is another surefire site to shop at.

Hope that helps,
Jon

Can I transfer music from my computer to my external hard drive without losing play counts on itunes?

Joe

I want to organize my music and put it all in one place, in my external hard drive. I currently have it all split up in different folders on my computer so if I were to move it I'm expecting it to say "Cannot play file. The original file cannot be found." Is there anyway to transfer it onto the external drive without having to import it all over again and lose my play counts? Thanks and sorry for the complicated question.

Answer
Yes. This is pretty simple â just transfer my music from my work computer onto my Maxtor OneTouch, take it home, and transfer the music onto my home computer â but I rely on all of my song ratings, accumulated over thousands of hours of listening while I work, to populate my iPod Shuffle with songs from the âMy Top Rated Songsâ Smart Playlist. I couldnât find any information on how to transfer my music, while still retaining my song ratings, but I finally figured it out.
Before you do this, youâll have to first transfer the actual files to your new computer. You may choose to burn CDs, DVDs, or use a thumb drive; but using a FireWire cable is easiest for large libraries, unless you have a portable hard drive.
The first step to this process is to review your storage settings under your iTunes Advanced preferences, which can be found by selecting Preferences from the Edit menu (Windows) or iTunes menu (Mac), and then selecting the Advanced tab
The first option, âiTunes Music folder locationâ indicates where your iTunes media content is stored by default. Remember that this only includes the media content and not the library database itself. Whether all of your content is located in this folder is going to depend upon the next two settings found on this screen:

Keep iTunes Music folder organized determines whether tracks in your iTunes Music folder are automatically organized based on the track information found within each file. With this option enabled, iTunes will move and rename files within the iTunes Music folder as necessary into an ARTIST\ALBUM folder structure, and name each file based on its track name from within the tags itself. If this option is disabled, then files within the iTunes Music folder will be left with whatever name and sub-folder they were in when you first imported them, regardless of changes to the tag information within iTunes itself.

Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library determines whether files that you add to your library are automatically copied into the music folder, or left in their original location. When you import new content with this option disabled, iTunes simply âreferencesâ the file from wherever youâre importing it, rather than making a copy of it in your iTunes Music folder.

Tracks copied into the iTunes Music Folder become âManagedâ files (in that iTunes will manage the location and naming of these files), whereas files that are not copied into the iTunes Music folder are âReferencedâ filesâiTunes stores a full path to the file, but does not actually take any further action with those files in terms of organizing, renaming, moving, or deleting those tracks.

Note that content purchased from the iTunes Store or ripped from CD is always stored in the iTunes Music folderâiTunes is actually creating new files in this case so it has to have somewhere to put them by default. Therefore, this setting only affects existing files from your computer that are added to the iTunes library using the File, Add to Library option or by dragging-and-dropping them into iTunes from another folder.

So why is all of this important? How you have configured these options is going to determine how much flexibility you have when moving your iTunes media content elsewhere. In a default configuration where all of your media files live within the iTunes Music folder location ("Managed" files), and have been organized by iTunes, the process of moving your library may be considerably smoother than for a user who has a bunch of âreferencedâ tracks living in various locations and possibly even on different drives.

While iTunes can move your files to a new location in either scenario, the only way to move a library that consists of referenced files is to actually convert them to an entirely managed library in the process. Users who have built their own file-system organization for their media content and want to preserve that layout will likely find the process of moving their content to be much more challenging without creating a whole new iTunes library and reimporting it.

Right now when I turn my laptop on it tells me it needs to do a Startup Repair, but shortly after this starts, it goes completely off. Would it be possible to still take all my files on there and transfer them to a portable hard drive if I can't get past Startup Repair?

Answer
maybe. what you need is a program on a bootable CD that'll do this -- check cnet.com/downloads for such a program and burn the CD it creates with a friend's computer.

'startup repair' is probably an operating system issue and this method will bypass the operating system. many such programs also provide their own device drivers and so aren't dependent on the ones on your hard drive.

is it a problem to bring with you a portable hard drive and a laptop to a trip to kazakhstan?

Answer
Not a problem at all. I brought my laptop there. No difference from any other country and less annoying than Russia. Kazakhs are pretty relaxed; don't let the old Soviet legacy put you off.

(And if you had problems with something silly like that, $50 could easily make the problem go away... There is no regulation against laptops or external hard drives though).

I have a Toshiba 160 GB portable hard drive and the Lexar memory sticks. The hard drive hums when pluged in. Which one will last the test of time? I want to put copies of all my pictures and some important files in the safe deposit box.
hard drives have moving parts and memory sticks don't. why are they better?

Answer
I have a back up drive that is separate from my computer we store lots of pictures, personal information and copies of contracts and such, another way is to store it on a digital photo frame you can get a SD card as big as 4 GB to store like 3000 pictures on it, if you have more than that get several frames.

As far as your question about memory sticks versus hard drive, the hard drive will be better, it is more of a permanent storage solution that will hold more memory, easily accessible and under normal use will last longer than a memory stick.

I have a Toshiba Portable Hard Drive. Can someone help me here?

Nick L

OK I recently bought the above mentioned product (the 140 gig model). I accidently clicked "Safely Remove Hardware" and the Hard Drive deal was removed, I also have reason to believe that the computer got rid of the "Removable Disk" that was required to detect the Portable Hard Drive.

I've been purchasing a lotta music lately and I need to be able to store it on my Toshiba.

Anyone know what happened here and what to do?

Answer
Actually 'Safely Remove Hardware' is the safest way to remove the hard disk. It shouldn't cause any problems. Just reconnect the hard disk and the autoplay should pop up.

If that doesn't work then go to Start > type in autoplay and press enter. Then go to the bottom of the window and click on restore to default.

I've tried to use several portable hard drives with my desktop computer running Windows XP and they have recently not been showing up in my drive menu. USB drives work fine and the portable hard drives I have been using are functioning on my laptop, but my desktop computer will not display any icon in my menu.

Any help would be appreciated!
I forgot to add, the USB drives that work fine are the thumb drives, only larger hard drives are not functioning, but I am using the same USB ports for both.

Answer
Yeah, Ive had this happen before. Your computer probably just didn't assign it a drive letter. Try this...

1. Connect external and turn it on just like you normally would.

2. Right click on "My Computer" and click "Manage".

3. In the left side under "Storage", select "Disk Management".
(Now it should be displaying a list of all your drives and there partitions.)

4. Look to see if you can find one that does not have a drive letter beside it. Tip: Look for the one with the capacity that matches your external.

5. Once you've found it right click on the drive and select "Change Drive Letters and Paths...".

6. Then click "add".

7. Then with "Assign the following drive letter" selected, chose the letter you want to assign to the drive. Now just close every thing by clicking OK.

Now it should be useable drive listed in My Computer.

Hopefully this helps.

How can I connect my two laptops, what cable do I need to buy? What else will I be needing?

How can I connect my two laptops, what cable do I need to buy? What else will I be needing?

1. Lenovo R60, bought year 2005, currently running Windows 7
2. Asus F5R, bought year 2006, currently running Vista Basic

If connected, can I manipulate the other's hard-drive, like formatting it, partitioning it, installing OS there, etc, etc..?

Also, can I share the internet connection running there on the other laptop while the two are interconnected (USB Broadband, wifi)?

Answer
Not exactly sure how you currently have them connected. If you want to connect them so that you can use the other computer remotely... like run a program... burn a disk... move the mouse around... then I can help ya out..

You can install a free program called Team Viewer. There are Two versions... The MAIN which requires a full install... and The CLIENT... which is just a portable .exe (no install).

To Use Program:
On the computer you wish to control remotely... the run the client and it will display a USER IS and Password... just enter those numbers on the MAIN computer after running Team Viewer and a Remote Link is created allowing you to control the other computer. Very simple and easy.

You can install the MAIN full install program onto both programs if you want...

I've used this program to connect to computers in other countries (I"m a PC Tech)..

If you just want to connect two side by side computers without using Internet... then you will need to get a CROSSOVER Ethernet cable... just plug it in and each computer will appear as a storage drive.

I want a Laptop, that is NOT a Mac, with a great battery life (over 6 hours), light and portable, and powerful. I do not need a lot of hard drive space, but i would like lots of memory, at least 2GB...
I will be using it for University, video editing, watching movies/downloading music, and other regular computer stuff...

Suggestions? (No price limit really)

Answer
Since you are obviously a serious computer user I would recommend Lenovo. They are reasonable and very reliable. You can customize your laptop however you want online (memory, battery size, etc.). Always buy online so that you can order exactly what you need rather than settling for a stores current inventory. I used to swear by Dell, but for the past few years I've been using Lenovo laptops with no regrets.

What is the best laptop for video editing?

FireHawk

I love video editing! I have had a Desktop PC for a long time and done some great work with it however, I am ready to move to something more advanced than what I have been doing (Windows Movie Maker). Since I want a new computer, I might as well go portable. I like Apple's macbooks, but I wanted to see if there were any other computers that offered everything that macs offer and maybe more features for less $$$. Any Suggestions?

Answer
Hi FireHawk,
video editing requires a powerful and speedy machine. Many of their laptops
are designed for video games, which means that their multi-media capabilities are top of the line. Though Alienware is one of the best, Hewlett-Packard is good too. Make sure to get quality graphics and audio cards. nVIDIA makes great graphics cards while Audigy sound cards are best for real-time editing.

I bought a Western Digital portable external hard drive of 640 GB. But once after I plug in my lap top it just shows 596 GB(with NTFS partition). I lost almost 44 GB. It makes me too disaapointed. Is there any way I can get all the 640GB space?

Answer
No...

640Gb = 640000000000 bytes

1 Kb = 1024 bytes
1 mb = 1024 kb
1 gb = 1024 mb

Therefore: 640000000000000/1024/1024/1024 = 596GB

They write it differently in the shop to make more money.

What is the biggest (maximum capacity of memory) Portable Hard drive? Pls help :) Thanks ?

miguel

WHat is the biggest (maximum capacity of memory) PORTABLE hard drive made? That is also powered by the usb
I would appreciate if you can send me the link. Thanks again

Answer
How are you defining "portable"? I've seen USB NAS setups (Network Attached Storage) with the possibility of RAIDing multiple terrabyte hard drives together, for a reported supported capacity of over 32TB. If you need that much space and not running a large company, you have some issues...those typically run upwards of $400. They are relatively portable, in that they have handles and can be picked up and moved, but not like thrown in a backpack or something. They are about the size of a briefcase or small suitcase.

Next step down (in physical size): raided 1.5TB drives (total 3TB). These are still about shoebox sized. They run about $250 or so. Still kinda big and heavy, but would fit in a backpack if needed.

Next step down: Standard external 3.5" drive, like a MyBook. 1.5TB. These run about $180-200. They are about the size of a moderate hard cover book.

Next step down: Standard 2.5" external drive, 640GB. These run about $150-200 at this size, depending on what other connectors you want on it. About the size of a small paperback.

Next step down in size: External 1.8" solid state drive. Largest I've seen is 256GB, but at a whopping price tag of over $1000 for one this large. About the size of a credit card.

Next step down in size: USB drive/Thumb Drive/Jump drive/etc. Biggest I've seen is 32GB (before going to 1.8" solid state drive), but one that large will run about $150-300. You can get smaller ones for much less. Slightly smaller than your thumb.

Next step down: MicroSD Card. About the size of a pinky fingernail. Max size I've seen is 8GB. However, this is not usb unless you have a media reader built in (which is technically always USB anyway).

What's the difference b/w portable & external hard drives?

portable hard drives for sale on Portable hard drive 1tb | Mobile Phones & Gadgets for sale Cebu ...
portable hard drives for sale image

Peachez_10

I'm trying 2 figure out what's the difference b/w an external hard drive and a portable hard drive... And if there's no difference, why are each of them listed under 2 categories...?

Answer
Some external hard drives are too big to be portable and they are not advertised as such. "Portable" is kind of an ambiguous term. A lot of things are small enough to be portable, but they are not easily portable. My external hard drive is small enough to be portable, but it requires an A/C adapter, so wherever I go, if I want to take it with me, I need to use it where there is an A/C power source. This is not practical if I am somewhere where my laptop can run off its own batteries and there is no other source of power, like on a bus, car, train, public place or airplane that doesn't have an A/C power outlet. Plus, I would have to pack a bulky A/C adapter and power cord in addition to the USB cord that connects it to the PC. A truly portable hard drive is one that is small enough to carry and is powered by the USB jack on the computer. Unfortunately, the manufacturers of supposedly "portable" external hard drives don't care about how easy it is to transport and use their products, they just want you to buy them and use them. If they can get you to buy them by saying they are portable, even though it is a pain to do so, then they make a sale.

What is better Seagate freeagent go or western digital my passport essential?

trevttk123

Iâm trying to decide what portable hard drive to buy, the Seagate Freeagent go or Western Digital's passport essential. Does either need any type of outside power source, like a battery? Do I need to buy a forked USB cable in order to have enough power?

Answer
Based on my variety of experiences, I'd choose Seagate unless you are planning on dumping some money for WD Raptors.

Experience from 20 years ago isn't going to help you, but Seagate's reputation took a dive after they bought Connor. :) Infact, the whole company took a dive with layoffs and being spread too thin overseas.

But they've gained a large market share since and have remained very strong in company / business sales all the while. Their current consumer line of drives seem very reliable as the ratio of bad Seagate drives vs good ones seems lower than bad Western Digital vs. good ones. I don't have numbers, but that's just the way it looks after working on thousands of computers.

My personal experiences with Seagate have been flawless. No problems. I cannot say the same for WD. But again, it is all subjective and luck of the draw...

Also from my personal experiences, I might include Samsung if it is available at a low price as well.

But yeah, theres that big x, and the icon looks like a network folder.

Not that im running Vista 64bit but also, this harddrive used to be in a laptop but i bought an external case and now i use it as a portable device.

Answer
You should wipe the hard disk clean first and then reformat it.

Use DBAN to wipe it, then Vista to reformat it.

How/What to reformat a 500GB toshiba external hard drive for my ps3?

best 500gb external hard drive image

~Ari~

I need to restore my ps3 and before I do, I need to save my data. I bought a 500GB toshiba external hard drive. When I plugged it in, nothing popped up and a friend said I might need to reformat it. But how? I've never formatted. Please help !

Answer
You will indeed need to reformat the drive. The type of formatting used on the drive currently is most likely NTFS, and you will have to reformat it using FAT32. Why? The PS3 won't recognize or use it unless it has been formatted FAT32. How do you do this? With your computer. Believe it or not, the Playstation community has multiple different posts on exactly how you would do this... IE the steps you would follow.

How do I go about transferring media{movies, shows} from my DVR to a portable hard drive? I have tried hooking Itup to the USP port provided by the DVR, But then what? I cannot find anything In the menu that says anything about what I am trying to do, or even that Is recognizes that a hard drive has even been connected. What now?

Answer
What DVR are we speaking of here?

I know of no DVRs with the capability of even running a hard drive on a USB port, much less allowing you to copy anything.

DV Rs are specialized computers but due to copy right issues, they do not have all the functionality that we take for granted in a computer. Quite simply, they will not let you copy stuff digitally because that sort of activity is ripe for abuse.

Why is my portable hard drive not working?

Pillar of

How can I partition my portable hard drive to save files both from my MAC and from an old PC?

portable hard drive to fat32 format image

I just want to save a ton of files from my MAC to my portable hard drive and if possible, also save files from my PC. I was told the hard drive can be 'partitioned' but have no idea how. I'm fairly clueless regarding all things tech so please use keep it simple LOL.

Answer
You have two options.

1) You can format the drive to FAT32 (MS-DOS in OSX) to make it both PC and Mac compatible. This will allow it to be used on both types of system without partitioning. This is the best option, except that this format won't allow file transfers of single files larger than 4GB in size.

2) You can follow the link below to learn how to use Disk Utility to partition your drive, created two partitions on the one drive, format one for Windows(NTFS) and one for OSX(Max OS Journaled). This will give you storage space for both Operating Systems, but you wouldn't be able to copy items between the systems. By default, OSX cannot read and write a NTFS drive, and Windows cannot read and write to a Mac OS Journaled drive.
