I'm looking for hard drives right now, but don't really know how to choose. I don't know what the following things mean for example.

USB 2.0, FireWire 400, and FireWire 800 and the rpm. For example, 5400 RPM. No clue what that stuff all stand for and how to choose.

what portable hard drives are there that i can use to capture footage from my TV?

Vilissa

i heard there is some kind of portable hard drive that you can use to capture anything on your TV screen. i really need one. can anyone tell me?

Answer
You can use any 7200-rpm NTFS File System..I use a old Maxtor..120-GB DiamondMAX..(USB 2.0)
..but I also use a External Capture Card...Product=ADS Tech/PYROa/v [API-558-EFS](Firewire-ieee1394)...I connect my Yellow-Vid(input)..and the Red-White-Audio(inputs)..and the PYROa/v converts to the Firewire---for computer up-port/..I use my Roxio 2010 software in Capture Application...and I get a DV-avi file...which I clean up in Movie Maker 6...then I use DVD Maker for a DVD-video/disk/...
I would suggest you have a Pentium D or better processor..I'm useing a E7500..with WIN 7 Home Premium..2-GBs..800-MHz RAM...then the Firewire INPUT..it works real good.

Can anyone tell me what is the difference between an external hard drive and an external hard drive enclosure? I had just bought a rocketfish 3.5" USB 2.0 Hard Drive Enclosure Kit because I want to put my movies on something portable, but it seems to be that something is missing...

Answer
Why didn't you google it? Anyway, a disk enclosure is just the chassis that protects the hard disk. And the hard disk is.... well... the hard disk itself.

What is the cheapest 1 terabyte external hard drive on the market?

Rainor

I'm looking to buy an external hard drive, specifically 1 terabyte of storage, and I have found some for over $200, but also some less than $50. I'm wondering if there is a major difference between these, since really there are not many features you can add to a hard drive other than more storage, and these are all just 1 TB. So I've decided that I am just going to buy the cheapest one I can find, because I don't see any reason to buy an expensive one if it has the same amount of storage. So, would anyone care to direct me to the cheapest 1 TB hard drive available?

Answer
Though other external hard drives offer a preset menu of ports, the Se agate Free Agent GoFlex cuts costs by letting you pick from a buffet of "personality cables" so that you buy only the connections that suit your system profile. We applaud Seagate for making data backups easier than ever, and recommend the FreeAgent GoFlex external hard drive for extra data storage now and easy upgrades in the future.
Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Pro (500GB)
Visit http://goo.gl/vPJeX for cheap external hard drives will back up your digital life without making a huge dent in
Even with the slightly low USB 3.0 performance, the GoFlex Ultra still makes an excellent portable external hard drive for people who need to expand their computer's storage.
Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Ultra-portable (1.5TB, USB 3.0, 22mm)
The WD My Book (4TB) desktop-class external hard drive is a basic, large-capacity drive. It's what you need if you're a compulsive video downloader, photograph everything you do,
So i thing this information will help you choose best and cheap hard drive.
Happy new year.

Answer
Personally I would go with the Western Digital drive. It has better reviews and I know from personal experience that Seagate support isn't the greatest.

What portable hard drive would you recommend (preferably 1TB)?

Jordan

I am looking into buying a portable hard drive. I study Graphic Design at college and a Hard drive would be useful. I currently have a USB which is only 4GB which I feel won't be enough.

I have some factors to consider

Reliability: Fast and easy to use and doesn't experience regular problems.

Portability: Easy to travel with.

Durability/Lasting factor: Doesn't brake easily and lasts for a long time

Memory: As I said before preferably a 1TB (3.0 USB hard drive)

Price: I am looking around the price of £50-£100 for an external hard drive.

I have had so many mixed reviews on external hard drives I'm finding it difficult to make a firm decision. All Answers will be appreciated but the best answer will be the one that best fits my criteria :D

Answer
iomega is very reliable. it also has a warranty that comes with it (every external hard drive does).

Many students at my school get WD (Western Digital) because it's cheaper, but many of them had issue with it (it's not connecting, it crashes easily, etc. etc.)

Iomega works well. It doesn't overheat like some of Seagate does.

Seagate overheats and not many student use it.

G (sold at Mac stores) have pretty good ratings. But I don't know of many people who have this, and not many ratings online (last time I checked).

Online at tech forums, people rate and crit which external hard drives works best and is most reliable. You can also check Best Buy and compare each hard drive with one another. You should also go into the hard drive company's website/forums which will most likely have buyer's ratings. You should check those.

When I did that, Iomega had best ratings. It also runs on Firewire, which is far faster than regular USB which most hard drives still rely on. When you work with large files, it's best to have firewire. Saves you time.

I have a western digital portable hard drive that i use all the time and love. Problem is the port where you plug in the usb cable broke off inside the casing. I contacted western digital and they informed me they do not repair anything out of Warranty (figures). All they could suggest was to find someone that could do data retrieval and buy a new drive. I just want to know if I can fix my old one?!?!?

Answer
If it's just that the USB connector came off, then most any PC repair place should be able to solder one back on. It's just four dang wires. It's not brain surgery, more like toenail clipping.

How can I connect my two laptops, what cable do I need to buy? What else will I be needing?

1. Lenovo R60, bought year 2005, currently running Windows 7
2. Asus F5R, bought year 2006, currently running Vista Basic

If connected, can I manipulate the other's hard-drive, like formatting it, partitioning it, installing OS there, etc, etc..?

Also, can I share the internet connection running there on the other laptop while the two are interconnected (USB Broadband, wifi)?

Answer
Not exactly sure how you currently have them connected. If you want to connect them so that you can use the other computer remotely... like run a program... burn a disk... move the mouse around... then I can help ya out..

You can install a free program called Team Viewer. There are Two versions... The MAIN which requires a full install... and The CLIENT... which is just a portable .exe (no install).

To Use Program:
On the computer you wish to control remotely... the run the client and it will display a USER IS and Password... just enter those numbers on the MAIN computer after running Team Viewer and a Remote Link is created allowing you to control the other computer. Very simple and easy.

You can install the MAIN full install program onto both programs if you want...

I've used this program to connect to computers in other countries (I"m a PC Tech)..

If you just want to connect two side by side computers without using Internet... then you will need to get a CROSSOVER Ethernet cable... just plug it in and each computer will appear as a storage drive.

I know that Flash USB's are capable of being formatted into USB's that the computer can boot from the BIOS, but can the same be done with a Portable hard drive such as one from Western Digital (the passport types) ? And if so, will it completely work?

Thanks in advance!

Answer
yes, it will work perfectly. but there are procedures to be done. follow the steps

** creating a windows vista/7 bootable USB drive

* this can only be done using machines with vista or 7

* run command prompt as administrator

c:\diskpart

DISKPART> list disk

DISKPART> select disk 1 (assuming usb drive is disk 1)

DISKPART> clean

DISKPART> create partition primary

DISKPART> select partition 1

DISKPART> active

DISKPART> format fs=NTFS (this will format the usb drive)

DISKPART> assign

DISKPART> exit (this will exit diskpart command)

* insert windows vista/7 into ODD

c:\cd d:\boot

c:\boot\bootsect /nt60 g: (assuming usb drive is named g:)

* use windows explorer to copy all windows vista/7 files and folders from CD

* restart PC to be configured and locate BIOS setup & change the boot sequence to USB drive as priority

Why did I lose memory space when switching formats from NTFS to FAT32?

portable hard drive for ps3 format on PlayStation 3 160GB Call of Duty: Black Ops Bundle | Thief 3 Gaming
portable hard drive for ps3 format image

Jack V

I recently bought a portable hard drive to play videos on my PS3. In order for the PS3 to read files, the hard drive needed to be formatted as "FAT32". When I reformatted the drive, I found the space went from 596GB down to 96GB. Is this typical? Is there a way I can regain the lost memory capacity?

Answer
I bet you tried to format the drive with windows?

Grab a linux live disc and format the drive as FAT32 from it - you should be able to use the full capacity (minus the slight overhead that is unavoidable with any filesystem).

edit: I've no idea what comstar is on about, I've got a 1tb drive formatted with FAT32 and it's using the full thing. Just never, ever format the thing with windows because windows has a crippled (on purpose) FAT32 library.

Can I move ps3 game saves from one ps3 to another without a usb flash drive?

bryan k

I'm trying to play on my brothers ps3 with saves from my ps3. Is there a way to do this without switching harddrives, using a flash drive, or memory card? Will a cd work? How bout a portable hard drive? If not, anything else?

Answer
you can use a portable hard drive, but it has to be formatted for the ps3, so if you have anything on your hd you should back them up to your computer, move the info from one ps3 to the other and then reformat the hd to your pc and transfer your data back to it from your pc.

Do I lose all my files when I install Windows 8?

best portable hard drives of 2011 on portable induction cooktop
best portable hard drives of 2011 image

Blackblood

I am using Windows xp atm and I thought of changing my OS. So I am going for Windows 8. But my question is: will I lose all my files when I re-install the operating system? Or can I choose a specific partition for installing and the other partitions will remain untouched? My windows files are all in Local Disk :C and all my documents, photos, movies, games are in Local Disk :E . So if I install windows 8 on Local Disk C, then I will keep my files from E, right?

Answer
That all depends on how you are installing it.

The best way as always with all Windows is to install it from fresh, don't attempt to "upgrade" as Windows is a bit messy and tends to leave loads of redundant files lying around from the old system.

To install fresh

Firstly open up "My Computer" and take a look at the two partitions - they should have names as well as letters (e.g System (C:) Data (E:) ) if they haven't give them a name - and remember the names - especially the one with the data on!

reset computer with Windows 8 disc in drive and get the BIOS to boot first from the optical drive rather than the hard drive (some BIOS you can do this by pressing F12 for the boot menu, others you need to go in the BIOS and change the boot priority to make the optical drive higher priority than the hard drive, you may even be lucky and already have the optical drive set as highest priority - all depends on how the machine was set up).

Before you start booting ensure you've removed any extra drives, such as usb flash drives portable hard drives, etc...

When you start booting from the disc it will give a message "Press any key to boot from CD" (I know it's a DVD but I don't think MS ever really bothered updating the wording to DVD!)

Press a key to start booting off the DVD.

You get to a point where it will show your hard drive partitions and ask you where you want to install it. Now at this point BE VERY VERY CAREFUL!!! If your not sure get someone who is into IT to watch over you as getting this wrong could wipe out the E drive as well (or just backup your E drive before beginning which is always the recommended and safest way!).

Go into the Drive Options... (Advanced) section of the partition manager and you should see a number of partitions (if you've left any USB sticks/portable hard drives plugged in you will also see these as well as the hard drive).

For example the screen should look something like this

http://cache.gawkerassets.com/assets/images/17/2011/09/windows8partition.jpg

if it looks like this image....
http://www.noteburner.com/images-new/guide/install-windows8/new-partition.jpg
then you need to click Drive Options... (Advanced) in the bottom right

NB the drives wont be shown as C:. or E: etc all you'll see is the drive name so you might have

Drive 0 Partition 1: RECOVERY
Drive 0 Partition 2 : System
Drive 0 Partition 3: Data

(System and Data may be different names depending on what you called your drives, and drive/partition numbers may be different depending on your computer set up - you did remember from the beginning what you called them didn't you?)

Delete the partition that contains Windows (in this example it would be System), but leave Data alone.

If you have a recovery partition you may also want to delete that too - as that contains recovery to re-install XP, and as you've upgraded to Windows 8 you won't be needing that anymore - unless you want to go back to XP at any time and you didn't create the recovery discs, if that is the case leave it where it is.

Now you should have a large section at the bottom that reads

Drive 0 Unallocated Space (again drive 0 may be different number depending on how your computer is set up).

Select that and click Next.

Proceed with installation of Windows 8.

Once in Windows 8 you should see that the data drive is still in tact, although really for full peace of mind I would highly recommend backing all data up rather than attempting this method.

Also any programs/games you have installed on Drive E will not work (unless they were standalone - some emulators are like that) - they will need to be re-installed - this is due to DLL and settings files, and registry entries which are created by the installers. (This is also why computers go slower over time - because all this junk gets left behind every time you uninstall something!)

Do the western ESL teachers in China face the threat of their lesson plan and handouts being stolen?

All Chines

like the western companies in China that face the threat of their intellectual properties stolen.

Answer
Prince Charles, you are oh, so wrong! "Foreign ESL teachers rarely write their own lesson plans, in fact I have never heard of such a thing." Allow me to correct you.

In Beijing, I wrote the entire curriculum for my classes. There was no book.

Here in the Northwest, we were given books that had NO teacher's edition and definitely, no lesson plans. This past year, the books were changed three days before the semester began. (This is our fourth year here and we are on our third book. The books change based on which publishing company gives the biggest kickback to the school. The teachers are never consulted about which books are best. This year's choice of books is dismal in that they don't teach anything . . . they are merely a collection of poorly organized and poorly constructed exercises.)

My PhD classes? I was provided a book for an audio visual course . . . but a classroom without multi-media equipment. I finally got a classroom with a computer this semester, but yesterday, found that the disk drive portion of the computer was sealed off, thus requiring me to transfer files to a portable hard drive in order for me to use the book.

I am hired by our graduate department. The Foreign Language Department has hired three other teachers to teach the English majors. THERE ARE NO BOOKS! The teachers have to come up with their own curriculum, lesson plans, etc.

My elementary school classes? No book. I'm teaching a phonics based approach to reading (as opposed to mere memorization of words) so I've written my own curriculum based on a collection of other materials.

When I attend ESL conferences (furthering my own education), I find that the majority of the foreign teachers in China are NOT provided books and that they MUST write their own curriculum. Those using school-provided materials are definitely a minority.

As far as my lesson plans and handouts "being stolen" . . . I expect my materials to be copied. I put my name and my (c) 2011 (or whatever year it is) on each document, but I am not surprised if/when they pop up elsewhere.

Education is about teaching and learning. If I were in it for the money, I most certainly wouldn't be here.

"Frankly, Chinese school administrators would never trust foreign ESL teachers to write their own lesson plans. Most foreign ESL teachers are recent college grads with beer on their breath, so they have limited experience and beer-constrained intellect."

While this may be true in some parts of China, it is not true for all parts. To tar all the true ESL professionals with the same brush is a grave disservice. Please don't try to speak for a profession that you are not a part of and of one that you know little about.

Difference between an external expension and portable hard drive?

Answer
I think two Solid State hard drives that are 512gb each, that would give you pretty much what you are looking for, they aren't cheap though, in Canada that would run about $450.00 each, you can get a 1T solid state drive for about $900.00, which to me is quite prohibitive, and you need a Thunderbolt port for that one.. I would think you will pay much less for a 1T hard drive disc, it certainly wont cost even close to what solid state are, if you don't need a really fast speed you can get a range of normal plug in hard drives for not too much money...You didn't say if you had a desktop or laptop...

Should I get a MacBook or a MacBook pro?

I am going to get a new laptop and I want it to be a apple but I don't know which one to get I don't need it to be portable I would like to be able to play some games on it I like a lot of hard drive space one thing I like a lot about the MacBook pro is the metal body but the MacBook is cheaper so which one should I get please help me

Answer
If you are not going to be doing any high-performance gaming then there is no way that you are going to need a MacBook Pro. The MacBook has a core 2 duo processor which is high speed (not as high as the MacBook pro's processor). If price wasn't an object, I would easily decide on the pro, but the only advantages the macbook pro has over the reagular macbook is the aluminum body, the backlit keyboard, a thunderbolt port (sounds to me like you wouldn't ever use that port), and the speed/performance. I would go with the macbook (not the pro) because the Macbook is $200 cheaper and mac computers are already expensive. You could also take into consideration the macbook air or the imac.

I want to save all my music in a portable mp3 player. is there one that is drag and drop that doesn't require programs like zune or itunes to import and is 20gb or bigger?

Answer
i'll start off by clarifying that the ipod is not drag n drop compatible (you probably know this already, but considering the other answers i thought it was worth mentioning). if you want true drag n drop, (ie, an mp3 player that acts like a portable hard drive,) what you need is an MSC (mass storage compliant) player (which the ipod is not).
now, there aren't a whole lot of msc compatible hard drive players out there. what i would recommend (if your primary interest is music) is the Creative Zen Vision: M. It comes in 30GB and 60GB sizes, and appears to be a pretty soild player (earning an 8.0 and an editors choice at cnet.com). it may not be the most elegant device on the market, but it got great reviews and has way more features than the ipod (or zune for that matter).

EDIT: my bad. the zen vision m is NOT msc. however, if you use windows xp or vista, it'd still be fine with drag n drop.

Western Digital "My Passport" External USB Hard Drive Non-Stop Light Flashing?

portable hard drive 2tb seagate image

When plugged in, the drive works fine, Windows recognizes it, I can backup and retrieve files from it. However, even when I am not accessing the drive, the light is constantly flashing. It is a consistent steady flashing.

I originally purchased the drive less than two weeks ago so I could back up all my files before doing a clean Windows install. The drive was blinking during my old Windows install, and now that I have a fresh Windows install, it still blinks the same. I was able to retrieve all my backed up files from it just fine but the light just keeps on blinking. Anyone know if I need to be concerned?

The drive is a Western Digital "My Passport" 2TB portable USB drive. System: Dell Studio XPS 8000-2361JBK, 2.8GHz Intel Core i7 860, 8GB 1,066MHz DDR3 SDRAM, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. Two internal hard drives, both Seagate (a 1TB and a 2TB).

Thanks!

Answer
If the drive has always done that, it's probably normal, reminding you not to unplug it without clicking "safely remove".

Which Hard Drive Would Be Best?

Answer
Western Digital 2TB. I have had a Western Digital 1 TB now for more than 3 years. It has been
used on 3 different computers and it still works fine. I would choose the Western Digital 2TB Elements Desktop External Hard Drive. That would really serve the purpose.

Open up the portable drive.
Right click, select New > Briefcase.
This is a major built-in sychronization feature of Windows.
Just follow directions that pop up.

CDs, DVDs & Blu-Ray discs VS. Portable USB Memory Sticks as storage?

portable external hard drive vs desktop on Samsung Roadster S SC9630: Specifications
portable external hard drive vs desktop image

LucyE :)

I know it is quite difficult to compare them (as people keep telling me), but can anyone give me some pros/cons of discs vs. memory sticks?
Thanks in advance :-)

Answer
Depends on what you are trying to accomplish. If you are looking to archive data that you do not really use but do not want to delete I would use discs. Memory sticks are cheap and a great way to bring data with you to use on another computer. If you are trying to clear space in an internal hard drive on a laptop or desktop but will still need to access this data often I would go with an external hard drive. The most important thing to remember is any storage method can fail at any time. Discs all of a sudden can't be read by the dvd drive. Hard drives and memory sticks can all of a sudden not be recognized by the computer. Back up what is truly important to you as much as you can. I have an extensive music collection that I have ripped from discs and spent much time changing information in property screens, adding lyrics and making it just the way I want it so it ends up in itunes cataloged just the way I want it. I have this music folder backed up in 4 different drives. The chances of all 4 drives failing at the same time is slim. Hope this helps. Good Luck.

Desktop Vs. Portable Hard Drive?

John W

I wanted to buy someone an external hard drive for Christmas, and i was looking at this one in particular:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8908621&st=External+Harddrive&lp=5&type=product&cp=1&id=1216424110187

I looked for more information on it and on their website, it was talking about desktop hard drives (which displayed the one i looked at) and then portable hard drives.

The person i'm buying it for is pretty good with computers, well better than that, and wanted to put windows, keeping her mac system on her mac laptop.

Now, i'm still clueless on most of this, or at least skeptical, so i wanted to know if you could even put a windows system on an external hard drive, and if you can't, well i was wondering if someone could fill me in on all that, and mostly i was wondering if there was any reason a desktop hard drive or a portable hard drive would have any reason to not be compatible with her mac laptop.

Summing Up:
Windows system on an external?
Desktop vs. Portable on a Mac Laptop?
Thanks

Answer
You cannot have a operating system on an external hard drive, also you cannot buy internal hard drives on Macs only external, you have to make sure its compatible with macs too regular external hard drives may not be compatible with macs

I have a macbook from 2006. It no longer gets updates, and I am starting to need something better. I want another mac, but do not want to buy something over $1400 including a mac protection plan. I am not sure whether or not I want a notebook or desktop. I only really want to do word processing and check my email and go on the internet. Please help! Oh, and if it helps i also have an iPad 1.

Answer
An iMac desktop is the best option for you and the usage you described. Since you have a portable (your iPad), you don't need to invest in a laptop. iCloud will allow you to keep both devices synced easily. With a desktop computer you'll be getting the most processing speed, memory, and storage space for your money (as opposed to buying a Macbook Air). I would also recommend that you wait to purchase your new computer. The last release of the iMac was on May 3, 2011. Seeing as the iMac usually upgrades around every nine months, the new iMac should be coming out very, very soon.

Here are the specifications of the iMac.

21.5-inch iMac for $1,199
2.5GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5
1920 x 1080 resolution
4GB (two 2GB) memory
500GB hard drive
AMD Radeon HD 6750M with 512MB

+

AppleCare Protection Plan for $169

The best thing to do is go into an Apple store and talk to a specialist to get a final opinion. Make sure to mention to them that you have a portable device already.

Hope this helps!

I have a 1tb western digital portable hard drive that wont let me copy or add anything from it only view it!!?

rich.96

I have a 1tb western digital portable hard drive that i have been using since december 2011 that was formatted originally to windows but 3 months a go i reformatted it with the help of APPLE to exFAT so it can work with my mac and windows.
BUT a few days a go it all the sudden stopped working!
when i plug my hard drive to my mac and tried opening it it wont let me at all my mac jumps to the desk top
BUT when i plug the hard drive to my windows laptop it lets me view my files and everything but i cant copy them off or add any files..

i know i can reformat it and it will work again but i cant loose the files on it because most of them are very important to me apart from my movies.

PLEASE HELP!

Answer
Because it sounds like both operating systems are unable to properly use the drive, I would guess you have a corrupted structure. The only surefire way to fix this is to reformat (and make sure you are ejecting the drive before removing it). One thing to try would be to see if a Linux computer could read and write to the drive - at least then you could copy the contents somewhere else so you could format the drive. You could install Ubuntu LInux for free through Windows using the Wubi installer (link below).

How to make external hard drive writeable to mac and PC?

Jake

I need to make my external hard drive writeable from my mac and my PC. How can i do this so i can use it fully on both??

Answer
@brisray:
Stand back. I'm going to shoot a few holes in your -- answer.

-- "Macs can natively read but not write to NTFS volumes.
Windows cannot read from or write to drives formatted in Macs."

Should be "Windows cannot natively mount drive volumes formatted Mac OS Extended." With HFSExplorer, free, Windows can mount a Mac volume and read files from it... but not write to it. With MacDrive or TransMac, Windows can mount and read-write Mac volumes.

-- "Macs can read and write NTFS volumes using MacFuse"

Not true MacFuse only allows using third-party drivers (technically, it allows creating a file system without root). Without the third-party driver, MacFuse does nothing.

-- "Windows (XP and above) and Macs (Snow Leopard and above) can read and write to exfat drives."
Not exactly. exFAT works with Windows 7 SP1 and above, plus Mac OS 10.6.4 and above.

Now for the real correct answer....
-- DO NOT USE ANY FAT FORMAT FOR ANY LARGE DRIVE VOLUME. That applies to both FAT32 and exFAT. Remember how XP would chop a drive into 32 GB partitions to use FAT32? That was because Microsoft knew how lousy and inefficient FAT is with large volumes due to cluster size increasing with volume size.
-- REAL ANSWER: Either 1. use NTFS with write enabled in OS X, or 2. use two partitions.

Advantage of 1: Files can be added to one large volume without planning for cross-platform partition arrangement.
Advantage of 2.: You can use Time Machine with that Mac volume. Also, the Mac volume can be used with other Mac OS systems that do not have write enabled for NTFS.

-- For NTFS, and OS 10.6.8 or earlier, use NTFS-3G (free) to enable read-write in OS X.
-- For OS 10.7 or later, use Paragon NTFS For Mac (US$20) to enable read-write in OS X.

{In fact, the newest version of NTFS-3G seems to work in OS 10.7, but the developer has no install package, just source code. If you know how to compile it, you can use it with OS 10.7.}

How can I get files off my mac formated external hard drive onto my PC?

I have a external hard drive that I have formatted to work with the mac computers I have at my school. I have a PC at home and need to be able to get the files onto my PC so I can do some homework at home but my PC will not recognize it. I can't reformat it because I still need to be able to use it on my school computers...... What can I do?

Answer
You could try the free trial of MacDrive: http://www.mediafour.com/products/macdrive/

Not sure what the limitations are on the free trial though.

I recently had rain checked a "Western Digital 120gb 2.5" Passport Portable" hard drive from Best Buy. I got on the internet and read some user reviews and found them to be quite horrible though. I want one that can handle both laptops and desktops and that will last for a long time and is quite durable. I do not have a lot of knowledge on portable HDD's Any help will be very appreciated. Thank you.

Answer
I have found that the big names work best, ie. Seagate, Western Digital etc. However, if you are looking for a good deal and a site that generally has reviews by mostly informed consumers, try buy.com. Here is a link to some results that you may find to optimal:

For example this hard drive is 250GB, for 79 dollars and has 38 reviews to read, most of them are great:

how do i save my dvd movies to my portable hard drive?

daluc2002

I just bought a portable hard drive and i want to save all my purchased dvds on it. How do I do that.

Answer
actually from what I have been told you can burn a movie to a hard drive as long as you own the movie and you won't be distributing it in anyway. Also to put something on a harddrive doesnt take a few hours unless the file is enourmous a movie would prob. take an hour or less depending on software
