What is a good 1tb external hard drive?

Salem

im looking at a Toshiba - Canvio Plus 1TB External USB 2.0 Portable Hard Drive but would like an outside opinion. Also, would i be able to download things from itunes on it?
i have a pc. also, how do i change where my itunes things download to?

Answer
They're all more or less the same and of course they can hold any type of files. If you have a mac though, you better make sure that the drive says "Mac Compatible" or you're screwed.

Yeah don't listen to me. I only used to work at Tiger Direct and had many people come back because their WD Passport drives didn't work with Macs even though I told them to get Passport Studios which were PC/Mac compatible. It's this guy who doesn't know a thing.

But hey, he's a level 2 and I'm a level 7 top contributor. Believe whoever you want.

I have a ton of pics and avis. Does anyone know of a safe way to store these? I currently have them on cd. Is there a better way like an external hard drive or do those crash. I don't want to keep them on the computer because i'm scared it will crash and loose them all. Is cd currently the best way.

Answer
USB pocket drive...I got a 1.0 GB for $12 at Walmart. Actually, I got 2, they're so cheap. One I actually take to work...portable, as intended.

Also got a USB external 80 GB drive by Iomega. It's good...came with back up softwere that works good, too.

*And*, I back up on DVDs and CD-ROMs. CD-ROMs are so cheap now...I actually will just throw those out as I re-do current back ups.

Finally, I have 2 installed HDs, so, right, I will occasionally back up things from one internal to the other internal HD for a very, very fast backup.

Also, I occasionally store data DVDs "offsite" -- like maybe at work or in my car, just in case my house gets completely burned down or who-knows-what in this incredibly dangerous world.

Why so much? Cuz I'm human and do stupid things, like the time I formatted my backup drive *and* killed the files on my installed drive. If I ever get that stupid again, (and it's likely, cuz I'm human) I've still got those data DVDs, CD-ROMs and USB pocket drives. And because I really value the accumulated data...some of which represents years of work.

How valuable is your data? What's it worth to you to never have to completely re-write, re-download, re-shoot every last byte of it? Your back-up investment should be commensurate with how much you value the data.

What is the best recommended portable external hard drive on the market?

Sam

I'd done some looking around on Newegg, Bestbuy, and Amazon for prices on portable external hard drives. The prices look affordable, but the customer reviews put me on edge. Some had said the hard drives (specifically the Seagate Ultra Portable 1 terabyte drive) caused their computer to crash with Windows 7. Others found the (Seagate) drives were poorly constructed and were useless in three months. What are some great drives for the prices these days?

Answer
WD(western digital) is usually good and there passports are good also. The 500gb here http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digital-Passport-Essential-Portable/dp/B0041OSAZS/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1306477962&sr=8-3

What is a good portable hard drive for PS3? What is a good internal hard drive for PS3?

WiiPS3 Pla

I don't want to spend more than $100 on either.

Answer
A good internal Hard drive for the PS3 would be any 2.5 inch SATA hard drive.

Here's some links to a hard drive that can be used Internally for the PS3 that's under $100 dollars:

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=9208971#Specifications

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/500917-REG/Western_Digital_WD2500BEVSRTL_250_GB_Scorpio_2_5_.html

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/484050-REG/Western_Digital_WD1600BEVSRTL_160_GB_Scorpio_2_5_.html

The brand name for the PS3's Internal Hard drive really doesn't matter, but personally I would go for a Seagate or Western Digital Internal Hard drive.

Any portable USB External Hard drive should be fine, but here's some links that I found:

Moving it no. Banging, clanging jarring, anything abrupt will probably do damage to it. They are pretty tough, but sudden movements are the worst for them.

How do I keep an external hard drive connected to the internet?

Liam Edwar

1TB Western Digital Essential External Non-Portable Hard-Drive. Could I possibly get a cable that connects from my HD to my modem?

Answer
You can buy an external hard drive enclosure that has a Ethernet cable and power supply. A lot of people use a network hard drive for home or business network. You might have to open up a port on your router so people on the internet could download or upload upon it, but this isn't advised because it will put all your other computers on your network at risk of being hacked and viruses.

How can I sync my Macbook and Mac Mini?

G.O.A.T.

Hello,

I am looking for an easy way to sync my Macbook and Mac Mini. They both are connected via wireless network, but I am wondering if there is a way to simply click a button and sync the two computers as opposed to using the file sharing capabilities.

Also, I have a portable external hard drive as well. Is ther a program I could install on the portable HDD that would enable syncing? Remember, the program would have to be compatible with OS X.

Thanks!

I've been reading multiple reviews for various brands such as iomega western digital and seagate and for each brand people are complaining about them breaking or dieing and as a result I am super confused. So what IS the most reliable brand? More specifically whats the most reliable portable external hard drive that has at least 500gb of space?

Answer
Honestly Western Digital is one of the most reliable..

The people who complain online are the very few that get defective drives, so don't mind anything you read.. Unless it's from a trusted source.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002QEBMB4?ie=UTF8&tag=eawatolobefa-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B002QEBMB4

That's a 1TB Western digital for under $100..

Here's a 1TB Iomega that stands upright:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003GALRIA?ie=UTF8&tag=eawatolobefa-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B003GALRIA

$75 for that one.. Nice.

$80 for Seagate:

Also, I'd be sure to get a 3.5" vs the 2.5 laptop hard drive versions, which are quite a bit slower..

Hope that helps :)

Answer
Providing both systems have the same OS, i believe you can copy over the whole game directory without any problems.

miss1nik23

A TB is supposed to be 1000 GB. My new external hard drive says I have 930 of 931 GB free. That means that the programs on the hard drive take up 1 GB. Where are the other 69 GB?

Is this normal?

Answer
That is completely normal. Manufacturers cannot produce a perfect size hard disk. Basically it comes down to the most space they can squeeze into a specific size disc. My 160 gb hard drive has only 156 gb. My internal 250 gb hard drive has 243 gb. and the 750 gb portable hard drive i would like to buy has only 720 gb. All of these shortages are due to the limitations of the methods used to produce the hard disks. The hard disk's circumference can only be a certain size and only a certain number of disks will fit into the total hard drive. The manufacturer puts as much space as they can onto the disks and gives you the proper amount of disks to get you as close to the advertised size as possible. Imagine using cd's in a hard drive. They only hold 800mb at most. So how will you give someone a 5gb hard drive with discs that hold 800mb. you could give them a 6 disc hard drive which would be about 4.8 gb or you could give them a 7 disc hard drive which would be about 5.6 gb.
hopes this helps you understand what is going on in that hard drive of yours.

What should i go for desktop , i pad , laptop or a smartphone?

Blade

i m thinking of selling my desktop and buying i pad because i have to switch on and switch off my pc again and again to see my e books and pdf files
i have those pdf files in my android phone as well but its very irritating to read these files on such a small screen
my friend is telling to go for a laptop because i pad does not full fill the desktop requirments completely
so please guys tell me what to do and which thing shall i buy , actually i was willing to go for i pad but its not important that what i want is right , secondly i can go for a good smartphone as well if i can do these things in it but it should be with a big screen
plz help me and suggest me the best option but please be sure it should not be too much expensive
thanx in advance.........:-)

Answer
You already have desktop which you are thinking of selling so definitely it is out of the list because it is better for you to go for new thing. Secondly iPad definitely a nice device but it has certain constraints because of its size and functionality and iPad is not a substitute of laptop as it is designed with different set of features. 3rd is a smartphone which is again same as iPad in a small size. So it makes laptop an ultimate choice. Also you can have multiple benefits by having laptop. I would recommend a good laptop to you which is definitely not much expensive but it has good features. Dell Inspiron i15N-3910BK is a good option to go for.

Look at this for further details:

http://www.amazon.com/Dell-Inspiron-i15N-3910BK-15-Inch-Laptop/dp/B009FX7CGS/ref=zg_bs_565108_4&tag=faowiw-20

Its features include Intel Core i5 3210M 2.6 GHz which is really efficient processor and 6 GB DDR3 RAM. It has 1 TB 5400 rpm Hard Drive for storage and 15-Inch Screen which is not much big which makes it really portable. So overall this is really a good laptop to go for and my vote would be for laptop over other devices.

I would like you to see an actual user comment:

You can also save the files to your new computer

How do I transfer my itunes library from my iTouch/iPod onto a computer?

1. Connect the iPod to your PC. If iTunes starts syncing (ie erasing) your music automatically, hit the X in the upper right hand corner of iTunes display, to the left of the search box, to stop it.
2. In Control Panel, Portable Media Devices, double-click your iPod.
3. In the Tools menu - Options, in the View Tab, check Show hidden files and folders.
4. Navigate to the Music folder. On my 2nd gen 'pod, the full path is
Portable Media DevicesUSER'S IPOD (F)iPod_ControlMusic
5. Select all the music folders, and drag and drop them into a folder on your hard drive, or directly into iTunes.

And you're done! The iPod music folder structure is strange and inexplicable, but once you move your files into iTunes you can set it to automatically organize your folder by artist and album to clean that up. (To do this, in iTunes Edit menu, choose Preferences and in the Advanced tab, check Keep iTunes Music Folder organized.)

This has work for 3 other yahoo answer users on here, good luck i know you can do it.

Syncing ipod manually

If you've tried syncing Podcast music and movies and they wont work try syncing manually.

1. Connect your iPod to your computer and open iTunes.

2. Select your iPod in the DEVICES section of the iTunes Source list.

3. In the main iTunes browser window, select the Summary tab.

4. Select the "Manually manage music and videos" option. This will deselect the automatic sync settings for the Music, Movies, and TV Shows tabs. Automatic syncing for Podcasts, Photos, Contacts, and Games can be individually disabled by selecting each of those tabs. Note: When manually managing iPod, disk use is enabled and iPod must always be manually ejected in iTunes before disconnecting.

5. Click Apply.

6. To manually add music, audiobooks, movies or TV shows to your iPod, choose one of these categories under LIBRARY in the Source list

7. Select and drag items you want (to choose multiple items, Command-click items on a Mac or Control-click items in Windows), then drag them onto your iPod icon in the Source list.

8. To add a playlist, select it in the Source list and drag it onto your iPod in the same ways as a song.

9. When you are ready to disconnect your iPod, select it in the Source list and click the eject icon.

Earlier I was at least able to access it but when I click on a file it would freeze my laptop until i disconnect the hard dive from it. The problem may be that hard dive is corrupt. It got disconnect mid way through transferring a 100 MB file from my laptop to my portable hard drive. Now when my hard drive is connected to my laptop, every minute or two I get 2 messages saying " you need to format the disk in drive G: before you can use it"and "you need to format the disk in drive H: before you can use it". by the way it works on my Nintendo Wii and Xbox 360

How to install two internalhard drives in a laptop?

Sudha G

Hello,

I got a new toshiba laptop with 80GB hard drive and my last laptop has 120 GB . i want to know if i can install my old one and if so how can i do that? how can i check if its compatible with my new laptop.

my new laptopn is a toshiba M115-S3094.

Please suggest.
Thanks in advance.

Answer
Hello Sudha..

I do not think you can install both drives internally.

the easiest and cheapest thing to do would be to install
your old 120gb drive into an EXTERNAL USB case.

That is a small aluminum "box" about the size of a cigarette pack, but thinner.
Very easy to install the Drive into it.
And there is a USB cable coming from it,that you simply plug into your laptop's USB port.

The laptop then has "Dual Hard Drives".

There is also a way to make USB hard-drives Bootable.
Which means you can keep your OLD laptop with "NO harddrive" installed in it,,,,
but plug in the USB External Drive and it will work normally,,boot-up and run as it always did.

You also can use an external USB Drive in ANY PC's USB port, and it will appear as that PC's 2nd drive

The USB external cases range from about $10~20 USD,,on up.
I do not think there's much real difference in quality/features among the many choices.

You MUST determine what type of Drive you have,,IDE or SATA,,and get an appropriate case.
I assume your OLD laptop has an IDE drive.

(Your New Toshiba has a SATA drive)

Look on EBAY,,and search for "EXTERNAL CASE"
You need 2.5" model for a laptop drive.
3.5inch is for Desktop Drives.

Here's some examples:

http://cgi.ebay.com/USB-2-0-2-5-Laptop-hard-drive-Enclosure-External-case_W0QQitemZ290053667302QQihZ019QQcategoryZ74949QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

http://search.ebay.com/2-5-external-case_W0QQcatrefZC6QQfromZR10QQfrtsZ0QQfsooZ1QQfsopZ1QQftrtZ1QQftrvZ1QQsacatZQ2d1QQsatitleZ2Q2e5Q20externalQ20case

What is the difference between an external hard drive and an external hard drive enclosure?

Jon07 M

Can anyone tell me what is the difference between an external hard drive and an external hard drive enclosure? I had just bought a rocketfish 3.5" USB 2.0 Hard Drive Enclosure Kit because I want to put my movies on something portable, but it seems to be that something is missing...

Answer
Why didn't you google it? Anyway, a disk enclosure is just the chassis that protects the hard disk. And the hard disk is.... well... the hard disk itself.

How do I turn an internal hard drive into a mass storage device?

Thanks for the answer Shane, but I'm not really that good on computer configurations and I'm kinda wealthy, well my dad is and I want a computer, which acts like an ultimate or super computer, that will last me a decade or kinda like 5 years, so will this config do that? Plus I wanted to know about Cyberpower, are they good or bad?

Answer
Did you just say wealthy?
Then this build is more suitable for you.
Processor:2 of the Intel Xeon E5-2695v2(2000$ each)
Motherboard: Asus Z9PED16(500$ dual Processor mobo)
512GB of ECC Buffered RAM(16 sticks)(around 400$-800$)
4-Sli GTX Titan(4000$)
RAID 5 4 1TB Samsung 840 EVO for storage(1600$ total)
RAID 10 4 512GB Samsung 840 Pro for OS(1200$ total)
Windows Server 2012 Datacenter R2/Windows 8 Pro x64(3200+$)
PCIe SSD 1.2TB for ultra fast storage for virtualization(5000+$)
Grand total:18900$-19300$
Good for your needs.

Are these good Spec's?

Jake Cane

I'm making a gaming PC and want to know if these are good.

CPU: AMD A6-5400K 3.60 GHz Dual-Core APU w/ Integrated Radeon HD 7540D
HDD: 500GB SATA-II 3.0Gb/s 16MB Cache 7200RPM HDD
MEMORY: 4GB (2GBx2) DDR3/1600MHz Dual Channel Memory (Corsair or Major Brand)
MOTHERBOARD: [CrossFireX] ASRock FM2A75 Pro4 A75 Chipset DDR3 Socket FM2 ATX w/ XFast USB+LAN+RAM, 7.1 HD Audio, GbLAN, HDMI, USB3.0, SATA3 RAID, 2 Gen2 PCIe X16, 2 PCIe X1 & 3 PCI
OS: Microsoft® Windows 8 (64-bit Edition)
POWERSUPPLY: 430 Watts - Corsair CX430 V2 80 Plus Certified Power Supply
SOUND: HIGH DEFINITION ON-BOARD 7.1 AUDIO
VIDEO: AMD Radeon HD 6670 1GB 16X PCIe Video Card (Major Brand Powered by AMD)

This is all for $477. Is it worth it?
Thanks but im trying to stay around or under $550 planning to upgrade later.

Answer
Some I like. Some issues.
The A6-5400K APU with 7540D either loses the graphics, or can get microstuttering issues with HD 6670 in dual graphics. It pairs only with HD 6570, and that is a weak result either way.
http://www.cpu-world.com/info/AMD/Recommended_graphics_cards_for_AMD_dual-graphics.html
A6-5400K is a weak CPU
http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-cpu-review-overclock,3106-5.html
About a Tier 7.

The HDD is small and SATA II instead of SATA III
The ram is OK and motherboard not terrible, but it is a waste with more than one PCIe x 16 slot
OS Windows 7 home premium 64 bit is better. Any custom build should use that. It uses less ram and easier to use.
The power supply is good.
HD 6670 is a 2012 entry gaming standard. HD 7750 is the 2013, but with that CPU, you bottleneck.

I learned that your price is exactly where laptops and desktops, each bought for best value, have equal performance. The Desktop is upgradable; the laptop includes an LCD and is portable.

You do not show a computer case or DVDRW.
The 6670 assumes the cheaper lower performance 1GB DDR3, unless specifically showing it as GDDR5.

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/10ciM
Shows cost of parts is $447

Looking at the system, the simplest way to say this, is that the price is good for what it is, but the CPU is too weak and everything but the power supply is over-trimmed to get there.

Look, here is $519 delivered (yours probably adds delivery).

CyberpowerPC Gamer Ultra 2138 Desktop PC AMD FX-Series FX-8120(3.1GHz) 8GB DDR3 1TB HDD Capacity AMD Radeon HD 6670 1GB Windows 8
The CPU is more for video editing than gaming, but still is tier 3. There is 8GB RAM and a TB HDD. Same HD 6670. Has a weird cheap high power power supply, and a fairly cheap motherboard. As a whole, it is notably better than what you show. At least you don't get the CPU bottlenecking.

A decent entry level modern system is $625
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883227469
Built up yourself is $587.40
http://pcpartpicker.com/p/10cGx

The problem is in your price point. I would save up some more money.

Here is a $500 Acer laptop
http://store.acer.com/store/acerna/en_US/pd/productID.258312300/parentCategoryID.60084600/
AMD A6-5400K APU2164
Intel Core i5-3210M @ 2.50GHz3818
OS - Windows 8
Storage - 500GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive - about the same
Memory - 4GB of DDR3 system memory - About the same
Memory Card Supported - Secure Digital ⢠(SD) Card, MultiMediaCard ⢠(MMC), Memory Stick ⢠(MS), Memory Stick PRO ⢠(MS PRO), xD-Picture Card ⢠(xD) - extra in laptop
Display - 15.6" HD Widescreen CineCrystal ⢠LED-backlit Display - extra in laptop
Video - NVIDIA ® GeForce ® GT 630M with 1GB of dedicated DDR3 VRAM -
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Computer-Games-on-Laptop-Graphic-Cards.13849.0.html
Show Desktop+Laptop GPU and RESTRICT
HD 6670=HD 5670
The Desktop is at rank #127, Laptop only 170, but trading factors that the desktop is more gaming worthy, but hurting in CPU.
Optical Drive - 8X DVD-Super Multi Double-Layer Drive your build has this?
WiFi / Bluetooth - 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi CERTIFIED ⢠/ Bluetooth ® 4.0+HS - extra in laptop
Webcam - 1.3 Megapixel HD Webcam (1280 x 1024) - extra in laptop
Battery - 6-cell Li-ion Battery - extra in laptop

To get a bit better GPU in the desktop, the laptop has a lot more other things.
At a GT 635M, the laptop would be better in many ways.
You just need to raise your price point to get a good system.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883265286
Take a $330 desktop, change the power supply and add a graphics card.
Intel Pentium G2020 @ 2.90GHz2859
$40 power supply and $60 graphics card and your system is beat.
The G2020 is better than A6-5400K
1TB is better than 500MB HDD
But if you are buying and upgrading, get a refurb or open box and start with FX-4170 or an i3 3rd gen if possible
Adding:
That start of a system costs too much to upgrade.
Start with this:
www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883220217
change the power supply when you add a graphics card.
Look through newegg and amazon
Get to a cpu in the top 3 tiers or #4 at the worse by Toms Hardware.
Prepare to change the power supply and graphics card
Prefer bottom mount PSU cases
Have 8GB RAM and 1TB if possible
Your upgrade to that system is a new CPU that will still be weak, and more ram and a new HDD.
The system you propose is not an easy upgrade.

My wii dvd drive broke or something , but i had another alternative and its to run iso on a portable hard drive but all i had was a 4 G USB and i manage to put some games there because they were like 1.5 g:nevertheless, does any one know were i can find Black Ops ISO to fit on a 4 G USB DRIVE?

Answer
You can't play it if its compressed and not the original size. Find another USB drive bigger than 4 GB or get an SD or SDHC card (16 or 32 GB) or get a hard drive from Seagate or another manufacturer.

What should I save before I wipe my hard drive?

Cassidy

I'm going to wipe my hard drive of my hp pavillion laptop today. I have a portable hard drive. I've saved my Documents, music, Photos, Videos, and Favorites onto it.
I think I have everything of upmost importance, but I'm not sure! any suggestions? Any programs that I CAN save?

Answer
if your just wiping your laptop and portable hard drive,no need to worry about backing-up your data, but that is the best thing to do.just don't let moisture seep into your portable hard drive or laptop.avoid spraying or dousing water on both of your gadgets.also avoid using baby wipes as they contain a lot of water.just wipe your gadgets with a damp cloth.do not use cleaners on your laptop(e.g. bleach, detergent)as this may make your gadgets malfunction.

if you have time, burn your files to a dvd or blu-ray.and don't forget to unplug your laptop before wiping to avoid electrocution.

hope this helps!

How can i use my seagate with a mac and pc?

portable hard drives that work with pc and mac image
Q. I have a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex ultra portable hard drive and am using a macbook os x. The first time I plugged the seagate in I accidentally chose to use it with time machine but I don't want this. How do I correct this? Also I don't see any software installer. Ideally I would like to be use this with my mac and PC. Someone pls help!! Oh and dumb it down not very technical at all.

Answer
Remember that when you format a drive you will lose all data on the drive.

If you don't need any of the data on the portable hard drive then format it with something that will work on both the Mac and the PC. if you format it, all of your data will be gone, so only do this if you do not need any of the data.

Normally the Mac will read about anything, the PC is more picky.

The way to do this is to plug the drive into the Mac (assume it is USB). Then use Disk Utility to format it.

I'm looking in Disk Utility right now on my Macbook (Mac OSX version 10.6.5) and it shows that you can only format the drive with Mac OS extended format (which will most likely not work on the PC) and FAT which should work on both the Mac and the PC.

To find disk utility click on the spotlight icon in the upper right corner of your mac (looks like a magnifying glass). Type Disk and you will see Disk Utility in the applications section. Click on Disk Utility and you will see the portable drive listed on the left hand side. Make triple double sure you have the correct disk! Click the Erase tab and Disk Utility will tell you what the format type is currently on the disk. Choose FAT and this will totally erase your disk and format it with FAT (stands for File Allocation Table)

Try it by copying a file to the drive, then plug it into the PC and see if you can see the file.

I also am pretty sure you can format the drive on the PC using NTFS and it will work on both the Mac and the PC. It would be easy to try it and see if that works.

There are other ways to share files that are easier. You can do file sharing between a mac and a pc on your network. Setting it up is harder, but once you get it setup it is a breeze to copy files. If you only have a few files to share and you don't want to mess with setting up a network share, then use dropbox. You can find it for free here for up to 2GB: www.dropbox.com and if you want to give me some dropbox credit click here: https://www.dropbox.com/referrals/NTE5MjEzMTM5?src=global0
Dropbox is pretty nice and easy to use.

Can I use an external hard drive with my Xbox?

Kyle

I am ordering a Seagate Backup Plus 500GB Portable USB 3.0 External Hard Drive, (compatible with PC and Mac) from Staples. If I plug it into the USB input on my Xbox 360, (newest edition, 4GB) will I be able to select it as a storage device to save downloaded games to?

Answer
I know for sure that you can use a USB drive. You might as well try it out. There's nothing holding you back. Plug it in and see if it pops up when it asks you to pick which storage to get your saved games from.

So i am looking into buying a western digital 1Tb portable hard drive but just wondering if i can use it as my main hard drive.

I have a laptop with like 10GB out of 218 left.
If you need anymore info let me know.

Answer
yes you can you just need to format it to the right file type fat32 or ntfs more likely the later
put it in to the laptop and use your os disk to start instaling then use the hardware from the portable case to copy your data from your old hard drive
