if i buy a 80gb portable hard drive to backup my ps3 will it be fat32? or will i have to do something to make it fat32? please explain how!

Answer
depends on the drive . you can use a pc to reformat it if necessary or most can be formatted using the ps3 - just go to system settings , format utility and find it . be careful you don't accidentally format the ps3 instead
you can ask specifically for a fat32 format drive before purchase or just plug into the ps3 to see if it shows up - if you can , first plug into your pc and check it's specs , copy something to it ( like an mp3 file , put it in a folder called music ) and see if the drive shows on your xmb under the music section
most drives that directly plug into a usb port without an external power supply are now fat32 but ask before buying and make sure they will show you on the package or manual where it says it is , don't just trust the employee

How do i back up my PS3 onto my portable hard drive?

Mark

my pse is 80 and and my portable hard drive is 80. so im good on space. how can i back up my ps3 onto it thoe?

Answer
There is a feature on your PS3 to create a backup for your HD. It is under system settings and you can back it up from there. You will need to make sure that your external HD is formatted correctly (FAT32) or it will not read once you connect it to your PS3 via USB.

im looking at a Toshiba - Canvio Plus 1TB External USB 2.0 Portable Hard Drive but would like an outside opinion. Also, would i be able to download things from itunes on it?
i have a pc. also, how do i change where my itunes things download to?

Answer
They're all more or less the same and of course they can hold any type of files. If you have a mac though, you better make sure that the drive says "Mac Compatible" or you're screwed.

Yeah don't listen to me. I only used to work at Tiger Direct and had many people come back because their WD Passport drives didn't work with Macs even though I told them to get Passport Studios which were PC/Mac compatible. It's this guy who doesn't know a thing.

But hey, he's a level 2 and I'm a level 7 top contributor. Believe whoever you want.

How do i get more storage capacity for my mac?

I have a Macbook Pro with a 500GB hard drive and 4GB of RAM. The only internal hard drive ive seen more than the one i already have is a 1TB one and everybody says its no good. From what ive read, adding RAM only boosts the speed of your computer and doesnt add storage capacity. So do i have any other options besides getting a large external hard drive? Id like to double my storage capacity to at least one TB by the way.

Answer
The only way is to get external storage - a 1TB portable drive for instance.

Is 500GB or 1TB portable/external hard drive enough for you?

I'm not sure which is better, but this Black Friday, Walmart will sell 500GB portable for $39 while Best Buy will sell 1TB portable for $89.

Answer
Look at your storage past.
Do you use hard drive space up quickly? (video files and such) Go with the 1 TB.
By the way - I use pricewatch.com for shopping
In this case... 65~70 $ gets you 1TB !

I am considering buying a netbook which one should I buy?

Selene Cor

Should I buy the Samsung NC10 or the eMachine E350?
Which is better specification wise?

Answer
Inside, it's all the same but the NC10 looks a lot better.
For the E350, READ THE VERDICT.

A Netbook can never be a NOTEBOOK (laptop). Honestly, the only thing it's good for is surfing the web, which also lags & freezes most of the time. If you want something small for surfing the web, get something else with Wi-Fi on it, else, get a Notebook computer so that you would not be wasting your money.

My suggestion, just save up your money for now & then when you have saved up, on Black Friday or for Christmas buy one that you wont need to upgrade in the long run.

If you're not into gaming or installing Photoshop or AutoCAD designing softwares, then you don't care about the video card w/c fits your budget just fine.
If a laptop has a dedicated video card, THE PRICE GOES UP (this is indicated by A LOGO STICKER for NVIDIA or ATI MOBILITY RADEON on the computer surface, just below the keyboard. But if you can find a good deal with at least 256MB dedicated video card, it will be better for watching DVDs.
Just make sure that the laptop has AT LEAST 2GB DDR2 RAM modules in it so that it will always ran smoothly & not freeze up on you (HIGHER IS BETTER; DDR3 & DDR5 are faster & newer types of memory modules that came out).
But what makes a computer really run fast? It is it's processor! So if you really want your processor to have computing prowess & for you to be able to run different applications simultaneously, make sure it's AS EFFICIENT AS an Intel Core 2 Duo Processor (Centrino 2 is a Core 2 Duo featuring power saving capabilities; Quad Core is for gaming fanatics). A Core 2 Duo is like having 2 motors running the computer each independent of the other w/c means for a Quad Core, it's like 4 motors are running the machine (that means it will run faster & more efficient even if its frequency is lower to that of a Core 2 Duo). Intel: Core 2 Duo, Centrino 2, Quad Core, Core i-3, Core i-5 & Core i-7 are all VERY MUCH FASTER & BETTER THAN an Intel: DUAL CORE, PENTIUM, CELERON, ATOM & their more affordable AMD counterparts.
In your case, get one with a Core 2 Duo or Core i-s & NOT one w/ a Pentium, Celeron or Atom.
Just make sure you have AT LEAST 2GHz of speed on your processor so that will be able to appreciate your laptop's fast response and performance.
The HDD (Hard Disc Drive) should be at least 320GB.
For the battery life to last longer, you need more cells into it. So if you can get a Dell from www.Dell.com with the HIGHER CAPACITY 6 CELL BATTERY, do so. The regular one doesn't last long. There are a lot of options & different combinations if you want to customize your own laptop, just STICK TO THE ESSENTIALS first.
8 cell, 9 cell & 12 cell batteries means they can last longer.
The average laptop LCD screen size is 15.4", and since you want something smaller than that w/ these 3 features I just shed some light on, expect the price to go higher (ex. for 13.3" & 14.1" LCD screens).

For LADIES LOOKING FOR PORTABLE 14" LAPTOPS, try the Core i-5 Toshiba Satellite M645-S4050 or Satellite E205-S1980 from BestBuy.com, both comes with 512MB Class 3 NVIDIA GeForce 310M dedicated graphics card for a little bit of gaming like the SIMS 3.
or this one, click here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asâ¦
that has a Class 2 NVIDIA GeForce GT 525M, for a much better gaming graphics.

The MSI GT680R 15.6" Gaming Notebook I got w/ the Intel® Core⢠i-7 for using my DesignCAD software and playing Diablo III, retails for $1,499.99 (+ tax & other sur-charges).
I chose to pay more to have the newest technology so that I DON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT IT GETTING OUTDATED WITHIN THE NEXT 11 YRS.
click here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152239

FYI: I always tell my customers, a laptop's battery is similar to a cell phone's. You charge it when it's depleted & you unplug the adapter when it is already fully charge (this will prevent the battery from getting overcharged & extend the life of the battery). So for less hassle, I always advice my customers to just remove the battery if they plan to use the computer for long hours straight (more than 1 hour) and just run it on AC power alone so as not to overcharge it & shorten the battery life. That is if there is an available outlet for you to plug in your charger at Starbucks, if not, then you really need the battery.
ONLY USE THE BATTERY FOR PORTABILITY, if you're on a trip or you're at McDonalds or Starbucks.
For chargers, make sure you don't stretch out the cable too much that the one by the power jack that you plug into the side of the computer gets bent. Make sure this part is always straight or else the copper wires inside will break & soon you'll have the problem of the charger not working anymore like what happened to some of my callers.

I am really interested in making movies but I am having a hard time finding a good professional HD video camera for under 700 bucks. The camera must have a USB port and cannot operate on a tape. I'd like the camera to have at least a 50 time zoom, and be good for shooting movies and action films. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Answer
i have a canon rebel t3i and its a great camera! i think its about $600. it does HD video and still photography. lots of settings on it so you can control it well. lots of handy features if you plan on doing everything in manual mode.

some things do take some figuring out cause the manual that comes with it isn't that great at explaining. but its also small, so very portable. comes with a USB hookup or you can just use a card reader. recommend it as a cheap, portable, good quality camera.

Need a small portable one with big screen and great HD video quality and it also needs to be under 250,thanks.

Answer
since quality is not an issue with you, look at the kodak Zi8 HD pocket camera

We got a digital camera at Walmart for $69 for my son's birthday, nicer than the one I have : )

Answer
I mostly got the cheap things that I needed because of the recession. I didn't buy a TV , Blu-Ray Player, or a camera just to be practical even though it was really tempting. I didn't really have a best deal but I managed to buy Polo Black ($30), Fallout 3 ($19.99), Entourage Season 5 ($9.99), 1 TB Portable Hard Drive ($59.99), and other things. Walmart disappointed me again. 10 employees and the assistant manager didn't know where the $10 Xbox 360 games. I stood in line for an hour and 15 minutes because it was overcrowded like 500 or 700 shoppers. All the stores that I went to, I always saw people buying three or four big screen LCD Tvs with two Sony Blu-Ray Players. Who really need those for life. I miss going to Circuit City because usually they had cheap things. Overall, my best experience was Best Buy and Guitar Center.

i need some advices to buy a new hard drive?

I want to buy a new external hard drive , around 350 to 500 GB , but i don't know what is the best hard drive !!
cause i have lots of movies and i want them to be save in a hard drive for ever ! is it possible ? or i can lose data ?

Answer
I just received my copy of the January issue of PC World Magazine and it has a review article on external hard drives, the article's title is "The Wide World of External Drives." Its a great article reviewing 10 top notched drives divided in to 2 catagories, portable and desktop external hard drive. You are probably best off with a desktop external hard drive since you just want to backup your movies. The more compact and portable a drive is the most expensive it becomes. Personally, my preference is for Western Digital and Maxtor. I have both products and they are extremely reliable. Please read the article for all the reviews:

"The Wide World of External Drives: Today's options provide impressive combinations of speed, interfaces, features, and software." -- written by Narasu Rebbapragada (http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,127545/article.html#)

It is a shame that Black Friday has come and gone. The day after Thanksgiving is called "Black Friday" and it is the number one shopping day of the year. Stores slash prices hoping to attract customers. Best Buy was selling a Western Digital 250GB external hard drive for $59.99 (no rebates). If you can hold off buying the hard drive until Christmas, you can save a lot of money because stores like Best Buy or Circuit City will have holiday specials on computers and accessories.

I run windows vista and the itunes files are slowing down my computer, I didnt have a problem until I added all the music. Can I use a flash drive, if not what type of drive do I need?

I am pretty sure its the music files, I've got a pretty cheap laptop, so it doesnt have a ton of space anyway and it doesnt have all the bells and whistles.

Answer
I had the same problem. You can upgrade your laptop, which is a good idea anyway. Add more RAM, it makes a world of difference. Anyways, get yourself a portable hard drive, depending on how much music your got. I got myself a 1TB hard drive, but I throw movies on there too. It's not too expensive, cost me about $100. Throw your music on there if you'd like, but the problem you run into is with the ITunes app. It's kinda a pain in the ass but it will speed up your PC.

Can I install a game in an external hard drive and play it?

John P

Hi! I just want to ask, since my pc has 6 gb only, I was wondering if I can buy an external hard drive and install my game there and play from the external hard drive? Thank you!

Answer
Short Answer: Yes, with a few rare exceptions and one caveat (condition). But, it may not perform as well as you'd like.

Long answer: Most games can be installed on and run from an external hard drive. The exception is when a particular game does not allow you to designate your own installation path. I will say that I have only encountered this once before, so it's quite rare, but still within the realm of possibility.

Now for the caveat:
Since software installation varies depending upon the installed hardware, you will only be able to play the games on that computer. Even though your hard drive is portable, your games are not. Since this solution is intended merely as a means of adding additional storage space, this probably doesn't concern you that much.

And finally the bitter pill:
Game performance will suffer. How much? Hard to say, but think of it this way: A USB 2.0 connection tops out with a transfer rate of 480 mega bits per second (mbp/s). Fast as that may seem when you're offloading pictures from your camera, it just can't stand-up to the transfer rate of an internal hard drive (anywhere from 1,200 to 2,400 mbp/s). By using an external storage device you effectively create a bottle-neck, you're only as fast as that USB cable, and the rest of your hardware is almost certainly faster than that.

As such, I would urge you to consider installing a second hard drive in your current computer. It doesn't tie you down anymore than the external drive does, and the difference in performance will be considerable. It's not the easiest thing in the world if you haven't done it before, but it's nothing a couple hours of research and a few well phrased questions can't get you through.

Final Notes: Unless you want to play StarCraft (total installation size of 90 MB) off of your external drive an internal second drive would be a far superior choice. The drive itself would need to be mounted inside your computer chassis. One of the open 3.5 inch drive bays would be ideal, but even a 5.25 inch bay can be converted with $10 worth of hardware.

Best of Luck!

Feel free to follow up with another question.

EDIT: Here's a link to an online guide explaining precisely how to install a second hard drive, should you choose that route...

What the hell was the terrifying noise my hard drive was making?

Me

So a couple of hours ago I turned off all my computers and shut off the power to all my devices in my room, then went and turned the power off at the main switch so I could change an outlet.

A couple hours later, after I've already slowly turned everything back on, I go to my xbox to try and watch a movie and it can't seem to list any of the movies I've got. So I go to my desktop to find that my external hard drive isn't there.. even though it's on and connected. It's also stationary and hidden behind something so there's not a whole lot of tampering/physical wear to that external.

I plug it into my laptop to try and see what's going on. It starts making this endless loud screeching noise. None of that clicking that's usually associated with hd damage. It's not listed in my computers, and it shows up in Disk Management as "uninitialized" asking me to choose between two different partition types. After carefully disconnecting it and connecting it back, it asks me to format it, which I cancel.

I start googling about my issue, starting to accept the situation, torn as hell and helpless and just about ready to toss the thing.

Suddenly the screeching stops, after almost 45 minutes of it going, and Disk Management lists the drive as "Online" and "Healthy". Explorer pops up with all my files! I'm still being really careful with it and weary and treating it as though it's in fragile shape.

I've downloaded some S.M.A.R.T. software to read the values and everything is listed as "OK" . No reallocated sectors, no read errors, no seek errors. I also ran a quick self-test, which completed without error. Everything seems fine.

It looks to be a perfectly healthy external hard drive.

So what the hell was that about? Was it doing some sort of maintenance or self-test? How am I supposed to tell the difference? I would've undoubtedly killed the drive for sure if had it gone on a bit longer.

Answer
ANY unusual noises are the death rattle of a dying drive...

Answer
I just got a new dell xps and it is great, you should look at the dell xps l502x its got:

2nd generation Intel Core i7-2630QM processor 2.00 GHz with Turbo Boost
2.0 up to 2.90 GHz

15.6" FHD B+RGLED True-Life (1920x1080) with 2.0 Mega Pixel Integrated Camera 720p HD video

6144MB (1x2048 + 1x4096) 1333MHz DDR3 Dual Channel

Hard Drive : 750GB Serial ATA (7200RPM)

8x DVD+/-RW Optical Drive

Primary 9-cell 90W/HR LI-ION (I get about 6h just browsing and stuff but 6 cell you would get about 4h and you comp would look nicer as in not off the desk but for gaming being off the desk is an advantage)

2GB NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M Graphics card

Intel Centrino Wireless-N 1000

2x USB 3.0, 1x USB/CHARGING 2.0

1x hdmi 1.4 FOR 3D

1x Microphone Jack and 2x Headphone jack Audio ports (yes 2 ports for 2 ppl 2 listen)

1x Gigabit LAN

Internal Backlit UK/Irish Qwerty Keyboard

English Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium (64 BIT)

McAfee SecurityCenter 15 Month Subscription

4Yr In-Home Warranty Support, including evenings and Saturdays

1 year of Collect & Return 10 day coverage included with your PC

It cost me £1050 or $1700, I was looking at hp's and stuff and they where like £1800 way way more expensive

I suggest that you give dell a call, on the phone they give you discounts and stuff if you ask. I also must state the jbl speakers and subwoofer are a dream for when playing games and stuff and the screen is awsome (the bightness is best set to 50% hurts your eyes it really is bright). Oh and its made from alliminium which looks brill but is fantastic because its not a fingerprint magnet.

Oh and I can run call of duty bo at high settings, batman aa at very high settings, command and conquer 4 at very high. Most games can run a max settings some you have to turn off say one feature from max to very high then the game is smooth. Its a really good laptop XD. Also dont forget this is at 1080p not 720p which most new laptops have nowdays.

The touchpad is also massive and very nice to use and has seperate right and left click buttons (i know some dont) which are nice to use.

Also the laptop is portable, i use it for taking to uni and things.

I have a Western Digital Passport. It's a portable hard drive.

I want to have all my files backed up on it form my computer.

-How do I update the portable hard drive with new files I put on my computer?

*Adding the new files one by one is too tedious. Replacing entire folders where the new files are in takes too long.

-How do those with portable hard drives address this?

Answer
Your backup software program would help you do that like the one Microsoft includes with their Vista but any software program would help you keep track. If you don't have a backup program try cnet.com for ones they recommend some are free go to their site type backup software in search space. Without on you would have to do it the hard way. How to I fix a non-detected external hard disk?

Squall Lio

I have a 3TB Seagate GoFlex USB 3.0 external hard drive. When I connect it to any computer, the drive spins (there is no clicking or other noticible physical damage), but the lights on the front don't turn on, nor does the computer detect it. I've tried going into disk management, and I've tried checking on Linux Mint. I still get the same result. I only have access to a laptop, so I can't try connecting this 3.5" drive to a SATA port. I've checked all of the connections including where the drive connects to its SATA to USB adapter. Any help on this matter would be super. Thanks in advance.
Pullmyefinger

Answer
I've always heard that the front usb ports don't have enough power to run a hard drive. maybe it does, but do you have the current usb drivers for it, are the connections tight, are the cables good? Are you sure the adapter isn't flawed? Find someone else that has a pc that will handle the connection and try it on that pc. does your bios support it? is the drive partitioned and formatted?

they are the exact same but some people don't know the right word
but portable hard drives are pocket sizes kinda like a flash drive but a bit bigger and external hard drive is more of an at home one you plug into the wall. id go with the external 500gb for 80 rather than 160 for 110 500 is allot more and more useful my opinion.

portable hard drives mac compatible image

I have the Mac OS X 10.7.3
2.3 GHz Intel Core i5

I am planning to get a portable external hard drive within the $200 budget mainly for video editting on Final Cut Pro and After effects and for storage.

I am so confused with fireware and 3.0
3.0 seems to be a good thing but will my macbook be compatible with it or will it function as a 2.0?

Please recommend me with the products with links. Thanks!

Answer
Final point is that Firewire 800 has wider bandwidth than USB. Also, USB never performs in real life situations equal to the spec.

Your computer (if it shows "MacBookPro8,1" for the Machine ID) is Early 2011, so it is USB 2.0. You cannot connect any USB 3.0 device to that. Your fastest option no matter what we think about USB 3.0 is still Firewire 800.... or Thunderbolt.

I also suggest an aluminum case for better heat dissipation. See links below.

How do I convert NTFS files to FAT?

LT

I just got a macbook and I'm using a Mac/PC compatible portable hard drive. I can't read the files from the portable hard drive on the mac, so I'm thinking about converting them to FAT. But how do I do that?
Do I need to buy new software to convert the files then?

Answer
You have to reformat the external drive, losing all files on that drive unless you back them up elsewhere first.

You'll want to format that drive in FAT32, not plain old FAT, for best compatibility. As you've discovered, the mac does not read NTFS formatted disks without extra software.

It depends on the hard drive itself, not the company that makes it. For example, HP Pocket Media Drives use a hitachi hard drive. I think hitachi is the best and it makes the most hard drives in the world.

What kind of external hard drive do I need for my home recording studio?

Turi Tippe

I have a home studio, and I'm currently ready to start recording vocals over the tracks I have produced. I have my intro and one song with vocals on them, but I'm running out of space on my PC. Any info on what kind of hard drive would be best would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
The companies manufacturing external hard drives are Western Digital, Seagate, Maxtor (a division of Seagate), Toshiba, SimpleTech, Iomega, Verbatim, and a few others.

Western Digital, Seagate, Maxtor, and Toshiba all manufacture their own hard drives.

SimpleTech seems to use Hitachi drives.

I don't know which companies' drives Iomega and Verbatim use.

I have an Iomega external hard drive, the rest are portable hard drives by Maxtor and Verbatim. If I had more money I would try the rest.

Which is the best? Doesn't matter, all hard drives are subject to manufacturing variances and tolerances, and damage during shipping by incompetent handlers. So if the drive does not work right the first few weeks return it for a replacement or a refund.

You might do best moving unnecessary data files from your PC to the external hard drive to free up space on the PC, and use the external hard drive to make backups also.

ive been putting them on flashdrives but i have more than 8gb of music and i think more than 8gb of photos as well.

Theyv become scattered across all of them and i need more room still.

In what ways to you recomment backing up music, and photos?

I dont want to lose either. Is an external hard drive a good idea? Or should i just get more flashdrives and dedicate 1 or 2 for pics and 2 for music.

Any other ideas welcome.

Answer
Get an external hard drive larger than your entire hard drive. Then you can back up everything on the external and create a disk image (on the external).

How do I get a usb portable hard drive to work?

ms P

I bought a verbatim usb Portable Hard Drive to store information on from my old pc with windows XP to my new pc with windows 7. I can not get the usb hard drive to show up on either pc. It shows a blue light on but otherwise it won't do anything.

Answer
a few possibilities:

A) it only has a usb cord, and it needs more power. Try a usb port on the back of the computer.

B) it has been corrupted. It will need formating. Here is a howto http://www.online-tech-tips.com/computer-tips/format-usb-ntfs/

C) it's dead.

I want to buy an external hard drive. My main concern is reliability and size.

I have found 3 that i like, and need help choosing between the 3. Other recommendations are welcomed. I want one that is durable and reliable.

Answer
Reliability would mean a raid 0 external.
(mirror image)

Basically raid 0 means if one drive dies, the other will still be there.

http://cgi.ebay.com/G-Tech-G-RAID2-500-GB-EXTERNAL-RAID-0-Triple-Interface_W0QQitemZ320199253018QQihZ011QQcategoryZ116258QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

The maxtor externals (1tb) can be configured for raid 0 (750gb) and use the fast firewire 400 interface or usb 2.0.

Building a gaming computer, have a few questions to be answered!?

Alex

Okay I'm jumping right into it, I am building myself a gaming computer for Christmas. I have a few questions that I will ask below. But before that, here are the parts I plan on using as well as the links:

Now for the questions:

1) Will all these parts fit into the case and will they all work with each other? As in, will I not have a problem with anything and just have to put everything together and it should work?

2) Will that power supply give enough power to everything? I am not a computer expert, in fact I'm only 13. So knowing a little about wattage and stuff, will that power supply work with everything?

3) Will that graphics card do well with the games of today and years into the future? As in will I not have to upgrade in a couple of years or do I?

4) Will I be able to play most games on max graphics? How about these games: Arma 2(Mostly Dayz), all the Valve games, Call of Duty series, Fallout series, Grand Theft Auto series, Crysis series, Battlefield 3, and Diablo 3? Pretty much a lot of the popular games today and on Steam.

5) Will I be able to upgrade later on? As in when the games start getting bigger and more advance to where my computer can't handle it, will I be able to replace and add more advance tech.

Thanks for reading and hopefully you can answer all my questions. If you can't answer all these please don't answer, I'd like to build a computer on or before black Friday. Merry Christmas guys, and happy gaming!

Answer
If you are building this computer to game, dont get an AMD processor. The best gaming cpu is the i5 3570k, which is the same price. You can get the same brand of motherboard, the Gigabyte ga-z77x-ud3h, it is compatable with the intel i5.

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/fx-8350-vishera-review,3328-14.html

You dont need 16gb of ram either, i would be suprised if you managed to use more than 4gb. 8gb is pretty standard now and is more than enough for a while. Your hard drive is external, you need an internal hard drive, such as this one.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148840

You also listed an external dvd drive, you need an internal one.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827106289

That power supply is fine but i would get something semi modular because your graphics card requires power connections, but 600w is fine.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151088

Your case and cpu cooler are fine. Lastly, the graphics card, the radeon 6850 is getting old, it is for budget systems. If you have a 1920x1080 resolution monitor, you will want a better graphics card, a gtx 670 or radeon 7950. If your monitor is around 1600x900, then a gtx 660ti or radeon 7870 will be able to max out those games.

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/geforce-gtx-660-ti-benchmark-review,3279-4.html

You can always upgrade your pc if you build it.

I;m on holidays in the states and have bought a Zune. I've uploaded all of my music to it via a portable hard drive I brought with me and my Dad's laptop. When I go back to the UK and install the Zune software to my own PC, will I have to wipe and start again? Similarily, if I plug it into a mates computer can I take music from his collection onto it?

Thanks,

Lewis

No you will not have to wipe it clean......When you install the zune software and open it and plug in the zune it will ask you if you want to set that computer as guest just click guest and everything should be ok ....Worked For me

What is the best way to back up all of my music on my computer?

Jellybrick

I have 20 GB of tunes on my computer. Should I get a portable hard drive? Amazon Cloud? Basically, I'm scared my old computer is going to crash and completely wipe out my music collection.

Answer
20gb isn't a great deal so a big honking external drive could be considered overkill. If you don't see your collection growing beyond 32gb in the near future, I'd simply buy a cheap USB memory stick. 32gb sticks are pretty cheap now. These are so much easier to handle, a tiny little stick that you can carry in your pocket and leave plugged into a PC/laptop when needed. I don't know where you are in the world but here's a few sites

UK
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Integral-Speed-Courier-Flash-Drive/dp/B001TVF6HG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1315692143&sr=8-1
£20 for a 32GB High Speed USB Flash Drive

US
http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Cruzer-Flash-Drive-SDCZ36-032G-A11/dp/B001T9CTS2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1315692231&sr=8-1
$37 for a 32GB High Speed USB Flash Drive

For greater future proofing, consider a 64gb flash drive.

http://download.cnet.com/windows/backup-software/
A list of free software for backing up

Now you'll be able to automate the backup so you don't have to think about it.

For even more security, you could consider backing up online on a less regular basis as it is a bit of a hassle to do all the time. I wouldn't pay for any service with the kind of backup size you want. Windows own cloud storage service is free and offers 25gb. Combine that with some other free services and you're set to go.

Answer
Here it is up to you on whether you need a lot of graphics or not. The HP has already proven itself on the market and is a pretty good laptop. Since you already are running 64bit you are at a great speed for your work. The other thing to consider is the price. Personally I would stay with the W7 HP laptop because it still is upgradable and the MAC's are limited for the price you are paying.

Is this a good gaming pc build ?
