What's the best external hard drive out there that will not lose any personal data whatsoever?

I'm running out of space on my pc and I need to know what's the best external hard drive that is portable, has lots of memory, cheap, will always work, and will not lose any personal data from the external hard drive. Some of the known external hard drives are like seagate free agent, transcend iomega, western digital, and lacie. If you know any RELIABLE known external hard drives, please write a well structured detail description of it. Thank you.

Answer
Check out the ioSafe Solo: http://www.iosafe.com/3

This external hard drive is virtually indestructible - it's fireproof, waterproof, and can be bolted down to prevent theft. Despite backup efforts, if you have a house fire or flood, you're pretty much hooped with a typical hard drive. With the ioSafe, in addition to its disaster-proof features, your data is safe. If something does happen to your hard drive, you can send it back to the company - at their expense - and they will attempt to recover your data and, if they can't, will spend up to $1000 for a third-party recovery service to do it. Once your data is recovered, ioSafe will send it back to you, along with a new hard drive.

I just got an ioSafe Solo and I love it. I'm extremely happy with the services and features this baby offers. :-)

Good luck!

How do I download a program to my portable external hard drive w/out having a SINGLE file of the download onMY?

mcjaames

...PC. I am very meticulous about putting programs or program files on my internal hard drive. I want everything single thing that I download to be on the external hard drive. For example, I just put itunes on the drive, and still find it under my c drive and in add/remove programs. I only want it to show up on my WD external hard drive.

Answer
if you get a box saying run save as and cancel then click save and navigate to the place you wish to save it. If you do not right click and click save target as and navigate to the place you want it. Good luck.

I want to copy music files from multiple PC's, and put them onto an external hard drive. Then I want to buy a mac, and copy the music from the external hard drive onto my mac so I can have all my music in one place. Is that possible?
does a hard drive with a usb connection automatically mean it is compatible with both?

Answer
Yes? lol
You just need to get a USB cable...and a SATA cable(depending on the slot of your EHDD) USB can be used to transfer but SATA is ultimately faster. Connect the drive to your pc...music on there...disconnect...buy the mac...connect to your mac(maybe use USB, i'm not sure how easy it is on a mac with SATA)

What external hard drive do you use with your mac & time machine?

meeso12002

If you have a Mac and use time machine, what external hard drive do you use and how do you like it? Was it already formatted when you bought it? Have you ever had to retrieve anything you lost?

Answer
I have a Seagate Goflex Home external hard drive. I'm sure there are other good ones, but this one is compatible with both Mac and PC, which is what we need. It also plugs into my Airport router and is completely wireless, which is also what we needed with laptops. I can also access the drive through the web from any computer. So far i really like using it and haven't had any problems. But there are other options, too, if you have a different situation to work with. For instance, if you don't need it to be wireless, they also have a Goflex Desk drive that you plug directly into the computer, so it's intended for desktop computers instead of laptops. If I remember correctly, it asked me how I wanted the drive formatted, when I first set it up, based on what kind of computers will connect to it. I haven't had to restore from Time Machine, but as long as the drive stores the data, Time Machine itself does the work, not the drive.

ive been putting them on flashdrives but i have more than 8gb of music and i think more than 8gb of photos as well.

Theyv become scattered across all of them and i need more room still.

In what ways to you recomment backing up music, and photos?

I dont want to lose either. Is an external hard drive a good idea? Or should i just get more flashdrives and dedicate 1 or 2 for pics and 2 for music.

Any other ideas welcome.

Answer
Get an external hard drive larger than your entire hard drive. Then you can back up everything on the external and create a disk image (on the external).

toshiba portable hard drive how to open image

xbigboy808

yesterday i downloaded from the toshiba website the touch pad driver for my laptop but i dont know what do to with the zip file or how to make it work so my touch pad is able to scroll up and down again. how do i fix this?

Answer
You have to open the zip file, save & run it.
If your computer is still in warranty and you have already registered it on-line before (support.toshiba.com), then call Toshiba's Tech Support hotline number (800-457-7777) for further technical assistance.
FYI, which ever country your call will be routed to, please be patient & polite to the person who will take your call. After all, you are the one calling them for assistance with whatever issue you are having with your portable computer. Make sure to speak your name clearly (spell it, if need be) & provide all the info needed & asked for. They are trained professionals for handling simple matters, so I believe they should be able to assist you w/ any issue as long as IT IS WITHIN THEIR SCOPE OF SUPPORT. It depends on the company but be cooperative because these phone technicians have a specific handle time to be able to resolve the issue of a caller, so please do not be a jerk. Listen carefully to their instructions & follow it, because IF YOU THINK YOU KNOW MORE, then WHY CALL FOR ASSISTANCE IN THE FIRST PLACE.
If your computer's 1-yr Standard Limited Warranty has ALREADY EXPIRED, don't expect too much. Ask them politely & talk to them in a friendly manner, for they are there to listen and PROVIDE YOU BASIC INFORMATION as much as they can.
Best time to call, after midnight Pacific Time.

Additional info, read on:
FYI: I always tell my customers, a laptop's battery is similar to a cell phone's. You charge it when it's depleted & you unplug the adapter when it is already fully charge (this will prevent the battery from getting overcharged & extend the life of the battery). So for less hassle, I always advice my customers to just remove the battery if they plan to use the computer for long hours straight (more than 1 hour) and just run it on AC power alone so as not to overcharge it & shorten the battery life.

FYI, laptop, as the name itself... well, I really don't use it on my lap b'coz sometimes our leg, the bed cover or some clothing may already be blocking the air vent without our knowledge.
Also, if your computer is running a lot of applications that means that the HDD (Hard Disc Drive) is moving very fast and any minute (small) movements of your legs creates vibrations inside (which we wont see from the outside) that causes damage to the HDD discs, and eventually in a long time (when the damage is too much and in some cases the HDD makes a sound) the hard drive will crash. So, if your laptop came with a HDD protection utility, just like what Toshiba and HP has, you can always lower down the sensitivity level to level 2 or 1 but never completely disable the protection utility to prevent the HDD from getting damage from the inside and use the computer on a stable surface. Now, like what I always tell my customers, to always create a restore point (every last day or first day of the month) and make sure that you constantly back-up any important pictures, documents or files from your HDD to a Flash Drive/Thumb Drive or writable DVD±R or an external HDD, so that you will not lose any of your pictures, music, files or important documents, just in case something bad happens.

As you know, dust is almost always in the air. The air vents needs checking from time to time for accumulated dust might have clogged in the air passage way within the laptop itself. Use a flash light to check in the air vents. If you feel no air coming out, then have the fan changed b'coz it's not working anymore. Check the bottom of your computer, it usually has rubber pads that provides ample space between the laptop case bottom and the table. For the computers that I have used, these rubber pads provide enough clearance for ventilation for the hot air though it's not enough. It never hurts to be cautious, so for my own laptop, I bought a $15 2-fan Cooler Master U2 Cooling Pad from MicroCenter to help flush away the heated air from the bottom air vents of my laptop. Cool thing about the Cooler Master U2 is that you can position the fans on the right spot for better ventialation. When travelling, if you detach the easily detacheable dual fan, you can use the aluminum frame as a protection for your laptop's LCD screen when inside the bag.

Looking to buy a slick external hard drive for Macbook Pro?

Adia

I'm looking to buy an external hard drive for my macbook pro. I'd like to keep it in the $100 dollar-ish range, and I'd also like it to be reasonably small- I don't want a huge thing because I have limited desk space. It must be mac compatible- some aren't. I've been looking around on the Future Shop and Best Buy websites, but there are an overwhelming amount of them available and I just don't know where to start.

Any recommendations? I need a reasonable amount of diskspace too- my internal hard drive is pretty cluttered atm. I'm thinking 320-500 gigs.

Thanks!

Answer
The small portable external hard drives that are only powered by your USB port are not nearly as nice as the ones that are a bit larger and have there own power. The larger ones run much quicker. I would recommend buying one with a power cord. As for which one, most all of the market are great right now. I just would not go out and pay for the lowest base price one, look for sales of the nicer version and you can get a great deal. If you can wait till after Thanksgiving, they are on HUGE sales. I bought a 500 GB one from Target for $45 normally $150. Hope this helps!

whats wrong with my hard drive and how can i fix it ?

Damian

i bought a 1 TB small external portable hard drive last year, it worked fine, but now there is only like 175 GB free space left so almost all my stuff is in there.
Now when i plugged it in, i hear a "krick, krick" sound.
the light usually stays on, but now it goes on and off during the reading of my 1 TB hard drive.
it is sometimes able to read and other times it takes 5 min and sometimes i laptop won't be able to detect it, so i have to unplug it and replug it, and sometimes it works,
if that doesn't work i have to put it side ways than it might work.

What is wrong with my external drive ?
How can i fix it ?
and how can i prevent this from happening in the future ?

Answer
Sounds like there is physical damage to your drive, take it to a service and repair shop or if the warranty is still vaild then send it to the manufactures for repairs.

Make sure there is adequate power supplied to the drive if it uses and external power source, use your external HD only when required, don't plugged it in all day.

I suggest you better backup whatever is there in your drive before it goes completely kaput!

Hi, is it possible to copy DVDs to a portable hard drive to then be played on TV?

I will be moving soon and I would like to put all my movies on a hard drive rather than lug everything. I don't know what device to buy, and whether the movies can be viewed on the TV later. Thanks for your help.
Sorry to sound so stupid, but what do I use then to connect the laptop to the TV?

Answer
If your talking about copying disks you will need ripping software like dvd shrink it removes the copy encryption and takes the file size down so it will fit an ordinary dvd(hence) shrink. This is more of a a copying device and i use it to do that them use avs to convert the files for hdd storage, my mate use's this program http://www.winxdvd.com/resource/rip-dvd-to-hard-drive.htm this rips the dvd and lets you choose what file type to store it as. AVI is most popular as it offers great quality for a small file size a typical film will be around 700-900 mb, get V LC media player for playback http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
As for laptop to tv connection that depends on both ideally you will have HDMI ports on both if not maybe your tv has a vga input without knowing the equipment hard to say. It is usually not too hard, just remember if you use anything but hdmi you will need to run a separate audio cable

I need the name of a true portable app thumb drive encryption program?

BIGDAWG

I need to encrypt my thumb drive so I can use it at work. All the supporting software must be entirely on the thumb-drive. I absolutely cannot download any support software onto the hard drive at my work station at my job. Therefore, I need a real portable file encryption progam that will completely operate from the thumb drive.
I need good suggestions, please. I would prefer a free program, but I'm willing to only pay a few dollars for the portable app.
Or should I just ignore using a portable app and just dish out the extra money to buy a thumb drive that's already an enrcrypted dirve (such as Kanguru or IronKey) ?

i have a "Western Digital my passport" portable hard drive...when i connect it to a PC i can read the documents on it AND i can add files to it, but on my macbook pro it wont let me do that! i can only copy files from the disk but not put any others on it! is there some setting i can change so i could do both..read and write?

Answer
In your Applications > Utilities folder is a program called Disk Utility

Select your external drive and click Repair Disk (note any errors) and then Repair Permissions.

If Disk Utility reports errors it can't fix, you need to quit and grab your files off the external drive, then head back to Disk Utility and format the external FAT (for Windows and Mac) not HFS+ thats' for Mac only.

All should be well.

I just got the Passport portable hard drive and plugged it into my school laptop (running Windows 7) but I need to transfer files from my home lap top (running Mac OS X) and when I plug it into my Macbook I can't add any files to the hard drive because it says it "Cannot be modified". What do I do?

Thank you

Answer
Firstly, is this drive Mac compatible?
Some WD drives are not.
If it is, try to re-format the drive but if/when you do, you will wipe it and lose anything that may be on it.
Mac > Utilities > Disk Utility.
Highlight the WD disk in the left pane.
Then click on Erase and choose FAT 32 as the new format.
This can be read by both Windows and Mac.

Best hard drive for Mac video editting and storage?

iseegrace

I have the Mac OS X 10.7.3
2.3 GHz Intel Core i5

I am planning to get a portable external hard drive within the $200 budget mainly for video editting on Final Cut Pro and After effects and for storage.

I am so confused with fireware and 3.0
3.0 seems to be a good thing but will my macbook be compatible with it or will it function as a 2.0?

Please recommend me with the products with links. Thanks!

Answer
Final point is that Firewire 800 has wider bandwidth than USB. Also, USB never performs in real life situations equal to the spec.

Your computer (if it shows "MacBookPro8,1" for the Machine ID) is Early 2011, so it is USB 2.0. You cannot connect any USB 3.0 device to that. Your fastest option no matter what we think about USB 3.0 is still Firewire 800.... or Thunderbolt.

I also suggest an aluminum case for better heat dissipation. See links below.

Here at DISH Network, you have to activate your account so when a USB external hard drive is plugged in, it will prompt to format the drive. I would call your provider to see if they require the same activation.

Can an external hard drive be used for primary file storage as well as an archive for back-ups?

portable external hard drives reviews on Seagate USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive review - Engadget
portable external hard drives reviews image

Daniel C

I have read several product reviews for various manufacturers' products and they almost always dial in on the utility of the product being reviewed as a back-up target. I want to store photos and music on a portable external hard drive and I wonder if I am barking up the wrong tree. I don't want to buy something that has no practical applicability for me. I use an on-line back up service (Carbonite) and do not need more back-up capability. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Yes, an external hard drive can be used as primary file storage (partitioning is recommended), as well as for archive back-up. So it depends on your purpose. Carbonite takes care of back-ups and I use it too, but unless things have changed it only backs up your computer hard drive and not an external drive. External drives can fail, get stolen, you could have a fire, etc., so if you store primary files on it you should have a secondary backup. You could back up your photos to DVD if the originals are stored on the external drive.

What external hard drive is the most reliable?

Goushirou

I've been reading multiple reviews for various brands such as iomega western digital and seagate and for each brand people are complaining about them breaking or dieing and as a result I am super confused. So what IS the most reliable brand? More specifically whats the most reliable portable external hard drive that has at least 500gb of space?

Answer
Honestly Western Digital is one of the most reliable..

The people who complain online are the very few that get defective drives, so don't mind anything you read.. Unless it's from a trusted source.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002QEBMB4?ie=UTF8&tag=eawatolobefa-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B002QEBMB4

That's a 1TB Western digital for under $100..

Here's a 1TB Iomega that stands upright:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003GALRIA?ie=UTF8&tag=eawatolobefa-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B003GALRIA

$75 for that one.. Nice.

$80 for Seagate:

Also, I'd be sure to get a 3.5" vs the 2.5 laptop hard drive versions, which are quite a bit slower..

Hope that helps :)

I'd done some looking around on Newegg, Bestbuy, and Amazon for prices on portable external hard drives. The prices look affordable, but the customer reviews put me on edge. Some had said the hard drives (specifically the Seagate Ultra Portable 1 terabyte drive) caused their computer to crash with Windows 7. Others found the (Seagate) drives were poorly constructed and were useless in three months. What are some great drives for the prices these days?

External portable hard drive for pictures and movies. What's the best choice?

rayrayunc

I'm looking for a portable external hard drive for storing pictures and movies. I was looking at the Western Digital Passport Essential 500GB. I've read some reviews that some hard drives are not good for storing movies. Is this a good choice? If not what is?

Answer
well some one i know has been using a western digital external hard disk drive for quite some time and he has had no problems with it...
i have also used that external hard disk and the movies stored on it and the songs work just as the same as the internal hard disk...
just be sure to look for the rpm ie rotations per second of the disk so that a higher rpm disk is much better
hope that answers the question
take care...

Will downloading and running a program off of a portable hard drive affect your computer if the program has a virus/infection on it?

Answer
Eraser Portable can wipe any hard drive, optical media, files, folders, encrypted data, the Recycle Bin, and pretty much any other data you want to kill. It may not be an app you use every day, but it's a great utility to throw on your thumb drive, iPod, or other portable device for those times you do need a quick, secure delete.

Is it possible to replace a Verbatim portable hard drive a/c adapter?

My sister has a 2TB Verbatim portable hard drive. Unfortunately, the a/c adapter -- 1.5A and 12V -- has broken and can no longer be used. It is possible to get this a/c adapter replaced? The shop she bought it from said they will send it back only if the whole unit is sent back -- hard drive and all. She does not want to do that because the hard drive is working fine and she does not want to lose all her data. It is possible to get this replaced?

2011 MacBook Pro v.s. Sager NP8170-S1?

Brian

Hey everybody, I need some help deciding what computer to get for school. I've been a Mac user all my life, but have recently found some shortcomings that have made me start to question whether or not I actually want my next computer to be another Mac. I'm headed off to college in the Fall, and am looking for a good laptop that will have good functionality. I want it to be great for multimedia, schoolwork, and gaming, as it will be my one device for all of these tasks. Here's the dilemma:
Currently, I have a Santa Rosa chip MacBook Pro from early 2007. Despite being to run Windows (for the most part) natively through BootCamp, the computer has never been fast enough, and has never had a strong enough videocard to run games on the settings I would like it to.

The new (2011) MacBook Pro's seem to have the same problem. Their ATI card is somewhat outdated, to say the least. It offers only 256mb of vram in the 15" and 17", which most definitely won't support games that I want to run on max settings. They also don't offer a 2.5GHz quad-i7, instead maxing out at a 2.3. Similarly, they don't offer 16 gigs of ram, only 8 (I suspect Apple plans to release 8 gig chips for their portables this summer, but can't currently produce enough to meet demand).

So, I've looked around and come across Sager as my best option for gaming. I don't want the 12lb. model, as the 8.6lb. model already seems to be on the heavy side (especially when compared to my current 5.4lb. computer). Fully configured, it offers 2 harddrives (I'd get a 120GB SATAIII in one slot and a 750GB 7200rpm drive in the other), 16 gigs of ram, a Blu-ray player/burner, and a 2gig Nvidia GTX 485m card, Nvidia's current top of the line mobile gpu. This will obviously be better for gaming.

My questions are as follows (directed primarily to owners/people who know owners of any Sager computers, and people who are aware/experienced with OSx86/Hackintosh):
-Does anybody here own a Sager NP8170-S1 (or any other Sager model)? Do you like it/would you recommend it? What are its strengths and weaknesses? What is its average battery life while browsing the web and just doing simple word processing?
-Would I be able to find the necessary drivers/would it be possible to install OSx86 (Hackintosh) on the machine? I would like the ability to dual boot like I currently can with my Mac. In a related question, how well does Hackintosh work? Can I connect wirelessly to networks? I'm pretty experienced and resourceful when it comes to installing custom firmware on various devices/hacking stuff/building servers, so I'm not worried about the difficulty level of the project--just want to know if it works in the end.

Please, for the love of all that may be holy, do not answer if your response contains anything related to the following:
-"mac suxxx, pc rulez, buy pc!"
-"pc is cheap crapz, buy mac lulpwnzar"
-"i haz no knowledge of computers. specs on one prettier than specs on other. go with prettier spec."

Answers like those will be disregarded. I'm not creating a forum for you guys to debate which os is better. They both have their strengths and weaknesses, be mature ffs.

Thank you so much in advance to any good answers! I'll do my part and give you your points for answering (the best response).

Answer
I'm going to save you a lot of trouble. If you can go without a back-light keyboard get a Sager. For one if you are really getting into multimedia it has the specs they will last you a good three to five years. Plus you could visualize/dual-boot to mac osx with vmware if you get the 2720. Also you could use the Adobe CS5 suite for most of your multimedia needs. I hear the new premiere pro does HD editing in real time and can even import final cut pro session files. There's very few people who have the laptop due to the intel 2nd generation i7 recalls but you could get a gist of the specs in the link below. A member by the name of Htwingnut or some sort also has a review somewhere in the forum. Sorry I would link it but I'm doing this on the go. Finally if you get the 485m you wont have to worry about games at all and you could pretty much get a 8gb ram sager 2720 processor with a 750 gb hard drive or cheaper than a macbook pro. Good luck mate!!
