encryption?

iisjman07

what free portable(for memory stick) encryption programs are there for my memory stick?

Answer
If you have a "U3" Jump drive, thumb drive or flash drive, what ever you want to call it (meaning a U3 is like a mini hard drive on your stick) you can use just about anything. I have a few few things encrypted on mine & I just use "Kremlin". Please DO NOT use version 3. Some suspect that the Gov. has put a back door in that version. Do what you want though.
And the very bottom link is a forum you can ask anything you like about security. Their pros.
Sure hope that helps.
As my Avatar says Opps, I just re-read your question & saw u are looking for a FREE one. Me big dummy. I did give you 2 free ones. I you need a serial number for Kremlin, E-mail me & I will give you a few good #'s to use

Large Portable Hard Drives(0.5-1.5TB): do they work only for one computer?

Bob

I have 3 desktops, and 2 laptops, and would like to know if these large portable hard drives can operate with more than one computer.

I have heard that they use an operational/confirmation program that would only recognize one computer, however I have a small portable hard drive that possesses no such program/installment.

Answer
There may be some confusion between different technologies here so I'll break it down a little bit.

If you are looking to buy a actual hard drive the plugs into the USB port on your computers. Assuming it's your own computers nothing special about them, and they're all windows based... Then you should have no issues swapping the drive between them

If one of the computers is a work computer: the majority of companies disable USB thumb drives these days to avoid loss of critical company data into the wrong hands.

If you are encrypting the data through some software method, you should be able to make a copy of the encryption keys across all your computers. There -could- be issues with the encryption key across multiple machines but that would get software specific and out of scope for the answer.

If some of the computers are windows based and some Mac Based... I don't know to be honest, Macs are supposed to be able to read from thumb drives written by windows machines but I am sorely lacking in experience with Macs. Ether way it's entirely possible there could be issues (I can't rule it out).

If you aren't going with a USB external hard drive, but going to get a detachable SATA drive bay for each of your systems, then yes, there are issues with swapping the drive around as windows will see he drive as "native". With native drives and NTFS windows places a digital key on the drive. You can still swap the drive around but windows might give weird messages that it's doesn't recognize the magic number of the drive.

This is a lengthy explanation, but I put the one I consider probably the most relevant at the top. Hope it helps!

I will be moving soon and I would like to put all my movies on a hard drive rather than lug everything. I don't know what device to buy, and whether the movies can be viewed on the TV later. Thanks for your help.
Sorry to sound so stupid, but what do I use then to connect the laptop to the TV?

Answer
If your talking about copying disks you will need ripping software like dvd shrink it removes the copy encryption and takes the file size down so it will fit an ordinary dvd(hence) shrink. This is more of a a copying device and i use it to do that them use avs to convert the files for hdd storage, my mate use's this program http://www.winxdvd.com/resource/rip-dvd-to-hard-drive.htm this rips the dvd and lets you choose what file type to store it as. AVI is most popular as it offers great quality for a small file size a typical film will be around 700-900 mb, get V LC media player for playback http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
As for laptop to tv connection that depends on both ideally you will have HDMI ports on both if not maybe your tv has a vga input without knowing the equipment hard to say. It is usually not too hard, just remember if you use anything but hdmi you will need to run a separate audio cable

I need the name of a true portable app thumb drive encryption program?

BIGDAWG

I need to encrypt my thumb drive so I can use it at work. All the supporting software must be entirely on the thumb-drive. I absolutely cannot download any support software onto the hard drive at my work station at my job. Therefore, I need a real portable file encryption progam that will completely operate from the thumb drive.
I need good suggestions, please. I would prefer a free program, but I'm willing to only pay a few dollars for the portable app.
Or should I just ignore using a portable app and just dish out the extra money to buy a thumb drive that's already an enrcrypted dirve (such as Kanguru or IronKey) ?

My portable usb device has 512mb and I was wondering if it would be possible to back up my hard drive to this while using True Crypt (the encryption progam)?

And then, how do I transfer data that to a different computer?
UPDATE: Also, would I need to compress the hard drive (which has 150GB --> more space than 512mb) in order to put it on a portable usb device?

Answer
FYI:

150gb will not fit on .5gb

An option might be to purchase a USB External Drive that will accept 150gb or more.

I Hope this Helps!
