Looking to buy a slick external hard drive for Macbook Pro?

I'm looking to buy an external hard drive for my macbook pro. I'd like to keep it in the $100 dollar-ish range, and I'd also like it to be reasonably small- I don't want a huge thing because I have limited desk space. It must be mac compatible- some aren't. I've been looking around on the Future Shop and Best Buy websites, but there are an overwhelming amount of them available and I just don't know where to start.

Any recommendations? I need a reasonable amount of diskspace too- my internal hard drive is pretty cluttered atm. I'm thinking 320-500 gigs.

Thanks!

Answer
The small portable external hard drives that are only powered by your USB port are not nearly as nice as the ones that are a bit larger and have there own power. The larger ones run much quicker. I would recommend buying one with a power cord. As for which one, most all of the market are great right now. I just would not go out and pay for the lowest base price one, look for sales of the nicer version and you can get a great deal. If you can wait till after Thanksgiving, they are on HUGE sales. I bought a 500 GB one from Target for $45 normally $150. Hope this helps!

whats wrong with my hard drive and how can i fix it ?

Damian

i bought a 1 TB small external portable hard drive last year, it worked fine, but now there is only like 175 GB free space left so almost all my stuff is in there.
Now when i plugged it in, i hear a "krick, krick" sound.
the light usually stays on, but now it goes on and off during the reading of my 1 TB hard drive.
it is sometimes able to read and other times it takes 5 min and sometimes i laptop won't be able to detect it, so i have to unplug it and replug it, and sometimes it works,
if that doesn't work i have to put it side ways than it might work.

What is wrong with my external drive ?
How can i fix it ?
and how can i prevent this from happening in the future ?

Answer
Sounds like there is physical damage to your drive, take it to a service and repair shop or if the warranty is still vaild then send it to the manufactures for repairs.

Make sure there is adequate power supplied to the drive if it uses and external power source, use your external HD only when required, don't plugged it in all day.

I suggest you better backup whatever is there in your drive before it goes completely kaput!

Is 500GB or 1TB portable/external hard drive enough for you?

I'm not sure which is better, but this Black Friday, Walmart will sell 500GB portable for $39 while Best Buy will sell 1TB portable for $89.

Answer
Look at your storage past.
Do you use hard drive space up quickly? (video files and such) Go with the 1 TB.
By the way - I use pricewatch.com for shopping
In this case... 65~70 $ gets you 1TB !

I am considering buying a netbook which one should I buy?

Selene Cor

Should I buy the Samsung NC10 or the eMachine E350?
Which is better specification wise?

Answer
Inside, it's all the same but the NC10 looks a lot better.
For the E350, READ THE VERDICT.

A Netbook can never be a NOTEBOOK (laptop). Honestly, the only thing it's good for is surfing the web, which also lags & freezes most of the time. If you want something small for surfing the web, get something else with Wi-Fi on it, else, get a Notebook computer so that you would not be wasting your money.

My suggestion, just save up your money for now & then when you have saved up, on Black Friday or for Christmas buy one that you wont need to upgrade in the long run.

If you're not into gaming or installing Photoshop or AutoCAD designing softwares, then you don't care about the video card w/c fits your budget just fine.
If a laptop has a dedicated video card, THE PRICE GOES UP (this is indicated by A LOGO STICKER for NVIDIA or ATI MOBILITY RADEON on the computer surface, just below the keyboard. But if you can find a good deal with at least 256MB dedicated video card, it will be better for watching DVDs.
Just make sure that the laptop has AT LEAST 2GB DDR2 RAM modules in it so that it will always ran smoothly & not freeze up on you (HIGHER IS BETTER; DDR3 & DDR5 are faster & newer types of memory modules that came out).
But what makes a computer really run fast? It is it's processor! So if you really want your processor to have computing prowess & for you to be able to run different applications simultaneously, make sure it's AS EFFICIENT AS an Intel Core 2 Duo Processor (Centrino 2 is a Core 2 Duo featuring power saving capabilities; Quad Core is for gaming fanatics). A Core 2 Duo is like having 2 motors running the computer each independent of the other w/c means for a Quad Core, it's like 4 motors are running the machine (that means it will run faster & more efficient even if its frequency is lower to that of a Core 2 Duo). Intel: Core 2 Duo, Centrino 2, Quad Core, Core i-3, Core i-5 & Core i-7 are all VERY MUCH FASTER & BETTER THAN an Intel: DUAL CORE, PENTIUM, CELERON, ATOM & their more affordable AMD counterparts.
In your case, get one with a Core 2 Duo or Core i-s & NOT one w/ a Pentium, Celeron or Atom.
Just make sure you have AT LEAST 2GHz of speed on your processor so that will be able to appreciate your laptop's fast response and performance.
The HDD (Hard Disc Drive) should be at least 320GB.
For the battery life to last longer, you need more cells into it. So if you can get a Dell from www.Dell.com with the HIGHER CAPACITY 6 CELL BATTERY, do so. The regular one doesn't last long. There are a lot of options & different combinations if you want to customize your own laptop, just STICK TO THE ESSENTIALS first.
8 cell, 9 cell & 12 cell batteries means they can last longer.
The average laptop LCD screen size is 15.4", and since you want something smaller than that w/ these 3 features I just shed some light on, expect the price to go higher (ex. for 13.3" & 14.1" LCD screens).

For LADIES LOOKING FOR PORTABLE 14" LAPTOPS, try the Core i-5 Toshiba Satellite M645-S4050 or Satellite E205-S1980 from BestBuy.com, both comes with 512MB Class 3 NVIDIA GeForce 310M dedicated graphics card for a little bit of gaming like the SIMS 3.
or this one, click here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asâ¦
that has a Class 2 NVIDIA GeForce GT 525M, for a much better gaming graphics.

The MSI GT680R 15.6" Gaming Notebook I got w/ the Intel® Core⢠i-7 for using my DesignCAD software and playing Diablo III, retails for $1,499.99 (+ tax & other sur-charges).
I chose to pay more to have the newest technology so that I DON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT IT GETTING OUTDATED WITHIN THE NEXT 11 YRS.
click here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152239

FYI: I always tell my customers, a laptop's battery is similar to a cell phone's. You charge it when it's depleted & you unplug the adapter when it is already fully charge (this will prevent the battery from getting overcharged & extend the life of the battery). So for less hassle, I always advice my customers to just remove the battery if they plan to use the computer for long hours straight (more than 1 hour) and just run it on AC power alone so as not to overcharge it & shorten the battery life. That is if there is an available outlet for you to plug in your charger at Starbucks, if not, then you really need the battery.
ONLY USE THE BATTERY FOR PORTABILITY, if you're on a trip or you're at McDonalds or Starbucks.
For chargers, make sure you don't stretch out the cable too much that the one by the power jack that you plug into the side of the computer gets bent. Make sure this part is always straight or else the copper wires inside will break & soon you'll have the problem of the charger not working anymore like what happened to some of my callers.

I have a Hitachi 500BG XL500 portable hard drive, and have just sold it to someone. How can i remove all the files and pics i have stored on it before i post it to him?

Answer
Formatting it twice will **NOT** delete it completely and there are software tools available which you can use to recover it.

Try this free open source tool : http://www.dban.org/

I've used it on client sites for wiping out hard drives and data destruction.

Hope that helps.

Which company makes the best portable hard drives?

Someone told me that portable hard drives have a short-life. Is it true/ If yes, what's the durability?

Answer
I'd go with Western Digital. But there are some highly rated drives at http://www.newegg.com Some of these are assembled with a different name on them, and who knows what drive is inside. If I had the choice, I'd go with Hitachi, the former IBM Datastar. I'd never buy a Maxtor drive. (again)

Try this one at NewEgg
Western Digital My Book Essential WDG1U1600N 160GB 7200 RPM USB 2.0 External Hard Drive - $79.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136021

or this one
Western Digital Passport Portable WDXMS2500TN 250GB 5400 RPM USB 2.0 External Hard Drive - $144.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136139

But here is the thing, one bump and you are dead. Consider carrying that drive in a special foam filled bag. Always put that drive on the floor of your car, so it does not get destroyed when it slips off the seat of your car and HITS the floor.

Maybe you should be getting several 4GB Flash (Thumb) drives. BUY one at first, and make sure that it works in every computer that you want it to work with. Then buy more of the same brand.

How about this from NewEgg:
CORSAIR 16GB Flash Survivor Ultra Rugged USB 2.0 Drive Model CMFUSBSRVR-16GB â $154.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233059

it says that after i input that there might be dropped frames... can anyone help me out on this one?

Answer
The external drive will be slower then any internal drive unless you are using eSATA, or your main hard drive is still running on the IDE buss. USB 2.0 had a theoretical data transfer rate of 480Mb/s, SATA 1 1.5Gb/s SATA3 3Gb/s and SATA6 6 Gb/s

How do I use my external hard drive for storing and viewing movies ?

Q. I have an external hard drive I was planning to use for audio files. Now I want to to use for DVDs. I assume I can play the DVD on my desktop to save file to the external drive. What is the best process to download movie from web to get to the external hard drive to watch on TV. What software is required ? There seems to many sites and different process to transfer the video to storage. Wanting the best quality when complete.

Answer
If you are just downloading files from the web i would recommend saving them to your pc first, then transferring to your external drive, as network issues can sometimes affect the quality when saving across network, plus it may take longer to download if your not saving directly to a pc. Then have the drive shared across the network, so that you can access all the files from any pc in your house, so it becomes a NAS at his point. If your hard drive has an ethernet port, you could just connect it to your router and have it shared as a NAS that way too. You may want to install a uPnP server like Twonky on your hard drive which would make it even easier to use, as other uPnP devices can then pick up the content on your drive, like an xbox 360 for example, then you can stream directly to your tv from your nas running the upnp server.

How can i get the music off of an iphone to a nw computer?

portable hard drive for apple image

Austin

I recently got a new laptop because my desktop broke and i had most of my music backed up to a portable hard drive, but i have music that i purchased on my iphone that isnt there yet. When i go to sync the iphone it says that it is synced with another library and asks to erase it. I have tried programs that allow you to view the music but it only appears when you look from the iphone. Help?

Answer
If the music was purchased through iTunes, you're in luck.

Connect your iPhone, and in iTunes go to the File menu, and choose "Transfer purchases from 'iPhone'". iTunes will check your phone for any music that was purchased with your iTunes account and will copy it back to your computer without any trouble.

The other problem, though, is with music that was not purchased through iTunes. Since your old machine is not available, many of the tricks out there won't work, since they involve you getting a file out of your old iTunes library and editing it on your new computer.

So your only option there really is to try some of the different programs that say they will help you get the music from your phone, and get it copied to your machine. Then, you can tell iTunes to sync the music, which will delete the music off the phone and then put it back on with what you copied.

Yeah... it's a huge pain. Apple really didn't make it easy to shuffle music collections between different computers. If you can live without syncing the music, you can just tell it not to sync that and it will still sync your other data, such as contacts, mail settings, and backups. But music and applications both involve it erasing the current library on the phone and re-copying a new one in order for the new computer to manage the phone properly.

As far as apps to retrieve the music from the phone, try these links out:

How to successfully partition and install an OS on a portable hard drive?

portable hard drive partition image

Adam

Ok, so I have a portable hard drive and wanted to install an os on it? How would I partition it for multiple OS's?

Answer
You would do it the same you would do for an internal drive.

Open up diskmanagment by typing "diskmgmt.msc" in the "run" field and partition away.

But, installing an OS on a portable drive will do nothing for you.

When you install the operating system, it configures itself for that particular computer. If you try to take that portable drive and hook it up to a different computer, it will try to reconfigure itself for the new computer.

This will cause duplicate drivers, system resource conflicts and memory management issues. In other words, you will have a mess of error messages, freezing, hangs, and the OS likely will not even load up.

How can I partition my portable hard drive to save files both from my MAC and from an old PC?

mr blonde7

I just want to save a ton of files from my MAC to my portable hard drive and if possible, also save files from my PC. I was told the hard drive can be 'partitioned' but have no idea how. I'm fairly clueless regarding all things tech so please use keep it simple LOL.

Answer
You have two options.

1) You can format the drive to FAT32 (MS-DOS in OSX) to make it both PC and Mac compatible. This will allow it to be used on both types of system without partitioning. This is the best option, except that this format won't allow file transfers of single files larger than 4GB in size.

2) You can follow the link below to learn how to use Disk Utility to partition your drive, created two partitions on the one drive, format one for Windows(NTFS) and one for OSX(Max OS Journaled). This will give you storage space for both Operating Systems, but you wouldn't be able to copy items between the systems. By default, OSX cannot read and write a NTFS drive, and Windows cannot read and write to a Mac OS Journaled drive.

What's the difference between a Desktop External Hard Drive and a External Portable Hard Drive?

portable hard drive good on ... portable usb 3 0 hard drive blue got this product is it any good brand
portable hard drive good image

Colin H

I have a laptop and I would like to get an external hard drive to backup my data. I was wondering the difference between a Desktop External Hard Drive and a External Portable Hard Drive. Can I use a Desktop External Hard Drive with my laptop? Or not? Please be as detailed as you can as I am somewhat computer illiterate. All help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Both would work with your laptop as they both use a USB port to connect to your computer, which both laptops and desktops are equipped with.

Desktop Eternal Hard drive- It is physically larger and is used for larger storage needs. These drives need to be plugged in to their own power supply in order to work. This doesn't necessarily mean you can't pick up the drive and take it with you, it's just that it's larger and more cumbersome, because it needs to be plugged into an outlet in order to run. So these are ideal for leaving on your desk at home or work.

Pros: More storage capacity
Cons: Needs an outside power source

External Portable Hard Drive: A smaller physical drive, therefore more portable. It doesn't require an outside power source. It will run off the power from your laptop. These tend to have small storage capacities than the Desktop Drives though. But they are also small enough to thrown in your laptop bag or backpack on the go as they tend to have a low profile.

Pro: Small and portable, No external power needed
Con: Smaller storage capacities, draws power from your laptop and can be battery draining if constantly plugged in.

So you need to figure out what you'll be using the drive for. If it's just for storing and backing up your system, go for the desktop drive. If you think you'll be using the external drive to backup files on the go, or transporting files, go with the portable drive. I can guarantee both with work with your computer. It is just a matter of figuring out your needs.

Will downloading and running a program from a portable hard drive affect your computer?

Will downloading and running a program off of a portable hard drive affect your computer if the program has a virus/infection on it?

Answer
Eraser Portable can wipe any hard drive, optical media, files, folders, encrypted data, the Recycle Bin, and pretty much any other data you want to kill. It may not be an app you use every day, but it's a great utility to throw on your thumb drive, iPod, or other portable device for those times you do need a quick, secure delete.

Is it possible and worthwhile to move and run games from an external portable hard drive?

I am considering buying a portable external hard drive to put music, videos and games on, but i have heard that games may either run slowly or not at all due to problems with the regisry or something.
Also, can i run other programs such as audio editing programs or winrar etc.
I am ultimately trying to make room on my small, and slow internal hard drive on my windows xp computer.
Basically, will games be playable if they are already kinda slow on my interanal hard drive from an external portable hard drive.
Thanks for any help you could offer.

Answer
If the game program is located entirely on the portable drive, you are OK. If not, such things as registry settings can get in the way. How can you tell? Good luck in trying. Other than asking the game manufacturer, if they respond to your inquiry, there are few reliable sources. Trial and error is up to you. Small games may be worth trying. Large games that take too long to load in the first place would be really frustrating if they fail.
Videos and audio editing use standard file types and therefore are portable. You can use one editor on one PC and another on another PC and not have to worry about compatibility.
Games on the other hand are usually on the bleeding edge of technology and much is non-standard or proprietary. If you were a game manufacturer, would you tell how you did things to anyone while you are trying to stay in the forefront of gaming technology? So if you don't want to install it twice, think twice about installing it on the portable drive.
I have a second, larger internal drive, on my PC. If I upgrade to a new PC, it can change the operating system on the new primary drive, but all I have to do is move the second drive to the new machine and 90% of reloading the game is done.
Why not consider a second internal drive for the games and a writeable DVD player for the videos and audio editing. The DVD player takes longer to write, but you can move the files to the faster second drive for editing until you get it right and then let it burn to the DVD drive unattended.

Is it possible to play music from an external hard drive without a computer?

Some Guy

I never seem to have enough space on my mp3 or phone to store all my music and videos.
So I was wondering if there wasn't something that allowed me to play music and/or videos directly from my portable hard drive.

Maybe, an adapter to female 3,5 mm jack? An android app?
I've used Google but couldn't find anything.

Answer
We were just talking about that. There is at least one speaker unit out there that takes USB input. I know that our local geek shop has SD card and flashdrive players, but I don't have one so can't tell you how well they work.

How to transfer a movie, lap to tower?

John V

I need to transfer a video file (10+gigs) from a laptop to a computer tower so I can edit it in the tower to master. Toshiba lap to Dell tower. It will be coming from the laptop to the Vegas Editing in the Dell. They both have USB. I'm having a brain freeze. I've done it with portable hard drives but not a laptop.

Answer
The easiest way to do this is to get a crossover network cable (or even a small network hub) and connect to two together using the network wizard. You can then just copy the file into the shared docs folder on the desktop.

Answer
It may be formatted as FAT32. If you have no files on the drive, reformat it as NTFS. If it has files on it

Go to a Command Prompt:

at the prompt type ---->

convert x: /fs:ntfs /nosecurity
where x: is the drive of your external hard disk.

There is a BIG RED X on my G: portable hard drive, how do i remove it?

But yeah, theres that big x, and the icon looks like a network folder.

braveheart

i have an 80gb portable external hard drive which is parted into two{40gb each} and now i want to remove the partition.can anyone share their knowledge on how to do it???

Answer
You have a couple of options that'll do the trick:

1. If you have 80 gb of free space on your internal hard drive, then you could move all of the data from your external hard drive partitions onto your internal drive.

Then you could use the fdisk command to remove the partitions from your external drive and create a single 80gb partition, and then copy the data back from your internal drive to the external drive.

Be sure to make a backup first though - it's easy to make a fatal mistake with the fdisk command and accidentally format the wrong hard drive (speaking from painful personal experience).

2. Purchase a partition management program like Partition Commander or Disk Director. Both are reputable programs that'll let you move or delete partitions without losing your data (see links below for reviews on both of these programs).

This last approach is a lot easier route to go, and money well spent.

Why can't I transfer really large files to a portable drive?

Trevor

I have a 6GB file that I want to transfer to my 300GB WD portable hard drive. However, when I try, I get a message saying there isn't enough disk space even though I checked and there's still 80GB of free space left.

What gives?

Answer
Sounds like your drive is formatted as FAT, which has a maximum file size of 4Gb. What you need to do is re-format the drive as NTSC (works on XP and later) or exFAT (works on Vista and Windows 7).

First, make sure everything on the drive is copied somewhere else, 'cause this will erase the drive.

Open My Computer and right-click on the removable drive. Select Format, and select the format you want from the drop-down list (I suggest NTSC). Tick 'Quick Format' and then Start button. The drive will be erased and reformatted.

You should then be able to add your large files.

I am planning on buying the Western Digital My Passport Essential 500GB Portable Hard Drive, but am confused about somethings. I want to know if you can just plug it in and begin to drag and drop stuff from my laptop on to this external hard drive. I have seen that you can, but some people say you have to do something about WD Smartware. Any ideas?

I have wd also. Just plug it in and begin to drag and drop. There's nothing else to do.

How could I transfer files from my PC to my ps3 wireless?

portable hard drives that work with ps3 on Playstation 2 Diagram
portable hard drives that work with ps3 image

rosas_jess

I want to transfer files from my PC to my ps3 wireless because it gets tiring transferring files back and fourth using a portable hard drive..could anybody please tell me how I could transfer them from my PC to my ps3 but without usb cables..like I would like to transfer them using the internet.

Answer
put your PC to share media in Windows Media Player..... they must be connected under the same wireless router.. Enable your ps3 to search for Shared media PC. YOur computer must grant access to this "unidentified device", grant it. and you will be able to transfer music photos and videos.... But I strongly prefer transfering using USb's its much much faster and you dont have to worry of your internet's speed or signal strength

Will a portable hard drive work with a playstation 3?

vikingbone

I was thinking of getting a portable hard drive to connect to my playstation 3 (to watch movies etc) and as they usually get their power via the usb cable I'm not sure if this would work on the ps3
If this will work any tips or recommendations would be happily received

Thanks

Answer
Yes, I have a 500gb ext hd that stays connected to my ps3. I have all my music and movies (divx) that I listen/watch using my ps3. It's a lot better now because I used to have a laptop connected to my hdtv. Getting an internal one is good too but carrying around the ps3 would be a little too much imo. I like to share files w/ friends so the ext hd is the way to go!

*edit - to the post above - in order to access your files on the ext hd you go to music/movies>go to the ext hd name [hit triangle] (i think) to bring up the "display all" or "information" options and hit display all. the folders you already have on your ext hd will show up and you can open up whatever you want from there. i was a little confused too as to why whenever i highlight my ext hd name nothing popped up but you have to display all.

What is the difference between an external desktop HDD and an external portable HDD?

I am in need of backing up my laptop hard drive and while doing research on external storage, I noticed desktop HDD's are cheaper than the portable ones. What are the key differences between the two? From what i understand, speed is a selling point, but how important is that? I only need one to back my laptop cause starting to go down hill.

Answer
As you say your laptop HDD is going downhill, you'll need to have it replaced and you CANNOT replace it with an external HDD. External HDDs are mostly for backups. Windows cannot boot from an external HDD.

Difference between Desktop and Portable HDD
--------------------------------------------------------------------
The difference is in physical size (dimensions) and operating speed. External desktop HDD are simply the kind of HDD you would find in a desktop PC enclosed in a case with USB or Firewire (1394) connectivity. The same goes for external portable hdd which is simply a laptop hdd in a case.

As for storage capacities, they both have the same capabilities. Operating speed is the difference. A desktop hdd operates at 7200 rpm (rotations per minute). Some newer drives operate at 10,000 rpm. A laptop HDD usually rotates at 5400 rpm. There are two reasons for the lower speed: to increase battery life of the laptop and to reduce heat output/heat generation because higher speeds cause more heat and keeping laptops as cool as possible is paramount.

There are now new HDDs known as Solid State Drives (SSD). These have no moving parts and so require less power and produce very little heat. However, SSDs cost a bit more over a traditional HDDs. At any rate, I'll advise that you go for a portable model as they are smaller in physical size and they still have high capacities; as high as 1 Terabyte (1 Tb)

Good luck.

what is the best type of external hard drive to buy?

i am looking to buy a external hard drive for my computer and i need to know what the best type to get is. i do not have a huge budget for this so whatever is the least expensive but something that will last. also what size should i get? is a 2 Tb to much?

Answer
2 Tb is almost certainly more than you need. You could store about 1,500 full length DVD-ripped movies on 2 Tb.

In my opinion, the best external hard drive made is the LaCie Rugged All-Terrain USB 3.0 Portable External Hard Drive. It has the following features:

Drop-resistant (not drop-proof though)
"Portable" means that you don't have to plug in a separate power cord
USB 3.0 means that it will be faster with newer computers that have USB 3.0
7200 RPM is the fastest type of external drive

Depending on your budget, here are links for the 500 GB, 750 GB, and 1 TB models:

I'm going to buy a Dell for sure, but I don't really know anything after that. I know their website lets you customize laptops. All I'll be using the computer for is offline games and taking notes in school. I don't want to spend more than $600. What would be best for me? I was thinking maybe the Inspiron 15.

Answer
If you're at the store & looking at the display laptops, the 1st thing you should look for on computer surface itself is A LOGO STICKER FOR NVIDIA OR ATI MOBILITY RADEON just below the keyboard. This SHOWS that the laptop has A DEDICATED GRAPHICS CARD. Diablo III, the game I would love most to play is said to run on 3D graphics & is rumored to need at least 1GB (if you're a little into gaming like myself) graphics memory (a lower graphics memory = CHEAPER laptop price), so always check the system requirement specs of the game's packaging (ex. SIMS 3; see if your laptop meets all the requirements).
Next important aspect is the RAM (memory). If you're in designing & you need to ran applications like AutoCAD 2007 or softwares used for editing photos and videos, you have to make sure that the laptop has AT LEAST 2GB DDR2 memory modules in it (the more, the better; DDR3 the fastest and newest type of memory modules that came out last October).
But what makes a computer really run fast? It is it's processor! So if you really want your processor to have computing prowess & for you to be able to run different applications simultaneously, make sure it's AS EFFICIENT AS an Intel Core 2 Duo Processor (Centrino 2 is a Core 2 Duo that features power saving capabilities; Quad Core is for gaming fanatics). A Core 2 Duo, is like having 2 motors running your machine each independent of the other w/c means for a Quad Core, it's like 4 motors are running the machine (that means it will run faster & more efficient even if its frequency is lower to that of a Core 2 Duo). Intel: Core 2 Duo, Centrino 2, Quad Core & Core i-7 (Core i-5 for desktops only as of now) are all very much faster and better than an Intel: ATOM, CELERON & PENTIUM (and their more affordable AMD counterparts). Just make sure that you have AT LEAST 2GHz of speed on your processor. For my computer, I chose an Intel® Core⢠i7-720QM Processor (1.6GHz, 6MB L2 Cache, 1333MHz FSB; newest type just came out this Nov) w/c is just the right stuff for the applications I use & games I play.
The average laptop LCD screen size is 15.4". If you want something smaller than that with these 3 features I just shed some light on, expect the price to go higher (ex. for 13.3" & 14.1" LCD screens).
The HDD (Hard Disc Drive) should have at least 320GB {Although I would have loved my computer more if it came w/ 2 HDD bays... 1st one for a 128GB SSD (Solid State Drive) & a back-up 500GB (72000rpm) 2nd HDD}.
If you've thought of a small, portable and affordable laptop, the new Sony CW13FX/B Jet Black glossy notebook went on sale @ Fry's about 3 weeks ago (for only $699.99). I checked out the price they had in other stores, and Fry's was cheaper by about $200 {go to Fry's Electronics (www.Fry's.com) then type in this # 6029078 (or 6029138 for white & 6029108 for pink) in the search box under Notebooks/Tablets before you click on GO}. Now, after the sale, the price went up by $100, so we are waiting for it to go on sale again after Thanksgiving. Let's say you are on 9th grade.. when buying a computer, you have to consider if you will still be able to use the one you bought for college? For this particular Sony model, I would assure you, you can still use it for college as long as you take good care of it & not break it (for the technology installed on this computer will not be outdated & still be good in 10 years to come, but this is just an example). There are a lot of good brand of computers out there Toshiba, Dell, HP and ACER (w/c owns Asus & Gateway; has affordable computers w/ the newest technology installed), you just need to look for the ones on sale (try display computers on Clearance Sale inside stores like Micro Center, Best Buy and Office Depot). Try http://www.newegg.com/ look for HP Pavilion dv6-1362nr.
Microsoft Office is an office productivity software (so you would need to buy the retail version after the 60-day Free Trial Version that comes with all brand new computers expires, to be able to use the Word, Excel and Power Point applications). Retail version is about $159, but you can get a discounted price of $99 w/ a configured Dell laptop (www.dell.com).
MacBooks, that is on a totally different aspect for Apple has their own OS (Operating System) unlike the common Windows OS (XP, Vista and THE NEWEST WINDOWS 7) that most computers come with.
Some places to start looking for the best prices, my advice, go to Fry's, CostCo, MicroCenter and BestBuy's web sites for updates & comparison. There are a lot of options and different combinations you can try in customizing your own laptop, just STICK TO THE BARE ESSENTIALS first (www.HP.com). The 15.6" HP laptop I customized and had configured with the Intel® Core⢠i-7 came to a total amount of $1,455.80 ($136 tax + other sur-charges already included). I chose to pay more to have the newest technology installed so that I DON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT IT GETTING OUTDATED WITHIN THE NEXT 11 YRS.

Help purchasing a laptop under criteria?

A.C

I want to try and stay under $450, definitely under $550. I have a toshiba satellite a205 with; 2gb ram, inter core duo processor, hard drive 160gb. The laptop I want to purchase I would like to be somewhat comparable in quality, not better. thank you
