I need to know what I should get to back up my current PS3 hard drive...?

uppity cra

I recently got a bigger hard drive for my PS3 and it turns out my friend doesn't have the free space I need on his flash drive to copy my current content from my old hard drive. So what would be better a flash drive or portable hard drive... is there any advantages to having a flash drive or portable hard drive handy besides just for my PS3... I've looked around a little and it seems like flash drives are either really expensive or don't have enough space that I need. Also, if I go with a portable HD are there any specifications it has to have to be compatible with a PS3 or will any kind work? So that's my question. Quick responses would be greatly appreciated as I'd like to either go buy one today or get one ordered.
I figured it out more or less... Though I managed to back up my data onto my ipod AND a flash drive I was unable to copy it onto the new drive... Apparantly whatever flash drive you use is sometimes hit and miss... I will most likely go ahead and get an external hard drive... I think if get a housing I can use my old PS3 hard drive as one... We'll see...

Answer
Oh yeah there is a great advantage because if your PS3 hard drive goes you still have all your info and saved games on the thumb drive or external hard drive and you can then just upload them on the new PS3 hard drive.

I would get the external hard drive so you can use it on your computer and PS3. You only really need like a 250GB or 500GB external hard drive. It hooks up through the USB port.

I would like to change my PS3 40 GB hard driveout and put in a 60 GB hard drive?

I would like to know if were to change my PS3 40 GB hard driveout and put in a 60 GB hard drive would i be able to play my PS2 games?

Answer
It doesn't matter if you have the 20GB, 60GB, or even the new 80GB PlayStation 3--you can always use more storage space. All that available hard-disk space quickly disappears once you start downloading games, demos, and HD videos. Fortunately, Sony has designed the PS3 to allow console owners to perform their own hard-drive upgrades. You can go out and select your own hard drive instead of being forced to buy an official first-party hard-disk accessory. However, giving console owners that freedom means that aspiring upgraders will need to know how to select the right hard-drive upgrade and the proper installation technique.

The first step to replacing the hard disk is going to the store or visiting an online retailer to pick up a new hard disk. The PS3 is compatible with just about any 2.5-inch SATA notebook hard disk. Both 5400- and 7200-RPM drives should work fine. The physical size of the hard disk is important because it has to fit the PS3's 2.5-inch drive tray. As far as storage capacity goes, it doesn't make sense to go through the trouble of upgrading unless you go big: We're talkin' 120GB, 160GB, or even 250GB.

Hard-disk manufacturer Seagate supplied us with a 160GB Momentus 5400.3 for our upgrade.

Once you have your upgrade drive, the next step is to back up the data on your current PS3 hard drive to an external storage unit. You can skip this step if you aren't attached to your music, videos, and game saves, but most of us will probably want to save all that information. The PS3 has a built-in software backup utility that can copy the PS3's hard-drive contents to an external storage device, such as a USB thumb drive or a memory stick. The removable storage device must use the FAT32 file system in order for the PS3 to recognize it. If you have an external hard drive that's formatted in NTFS, you can use the Disk Management utility in Windows to reformat the drive, but you'll need to create partitions on large external hard drives because Windows can only do FAT32 on drives 32GB or smaller.

Save your data using the PS3's backup utility.

If your storage device isn't large enough to handle a full system backup, you can selectively copy data over through the various music, photo, and game menus in the XMB. Your PlayStation Network login and system settings will remain safe on the system during the entire process. After you have your data safely backed up, you can move on to the actual hard-drive swap.

You will need a Phillips-head screwdriver to complete this part of the installation process. The PS3 owner's manual also includes step-by-step details on how to replace the hard drive, in case you need more instructions.

Turn off and unplug the system. Remove the plastic HD side-panel, and remove the blue screw.

Open the metal latch, move the drive tray to the right, and slide out the drive.

Remove the four screws that hold the hard drive to the tray. Use a screwdriver that fits snugly because the screws are extremely tight and easy to strip.

Swap in the new drive, and replace the screws.

Put the drive tray back into the system and slide it into place. Then replace the blue screw and snap the side panel back onto the system.

Turn on the console and let the system format the new drive. Then load up the PS3 backup utility to restore data from your external storage device back onto the PS3 hard drive.

At this point you should have a newly upgraded PS3 and the leftover hard drive. You could try selling the old drive, but small-capacity used drives might not fetch enough money to be worth the hassle of finding a buyer. If you still want to make the drive useful, you can buy an external drive enclosure to make it into a portable storage device.

Look at your storage past.
Do you use hard drive space up quickly? (video files and such) Go with the 1 TB.
By the way - I use pricewatch.com for shopping

Answer
I am almost positive you cannot, get that internal with a lap top. I would just go external if I were you. You can probably also get a non -portable external hard drive for pretty cheap at a store like walmart or best buy/

I went to Seagate's website and found the page for the FreeAgentGo, but this portable hard drive series is not FireWire-capable.

http://freeagent.seagate.com/en-us/hard-drive/portable-hard-drive/Free-Agent.html

SimpleTech does not have FireWire-capable portable hard drives, FireWire only in standard external hard drives:

Portable hard drive issues?

Kyouya's G

Re post because the other one is getting no help

I'm not a computer genius so if anyone has anything to help please tell me how to get there and what to do in step by step or else I might get lost.

My portable hard drive won't work. It usually auto runs when I plug it in then I view it as a folder, or sometimes, I go to My computer and it's there as another local disk.

Neither of these things are happening and I don't know why. It shows up the on my taskbar just as being able to be safely removed and I checked it's properties in the device manager and it says it's running fine.

I even tried to uninstall the driver but that didn't work.

Any ideas? I'm positive there's no viruses on it and windows says it's working fine I just can't figure out why I can't access it.
Can I use Partition Magic to help?
***********I FIXED MY OWN PROBLEM***********

I'm going to put what I did for future help for others. READ STEPS BEFORE TAKING THEM, DOWNLOADS ARE NECESSARY FOR MY FIX.

1. Go to Start < Run < type "compmgmt.msc" NO ""
2. In the Computer Management window select Disk Management under Storage in the left panel.
3. Find your device. I didn't notice it at first because mine was labeled "Disk 1" Tip: Unplug your portable then plug it in because the window will update immediately, that's how to find the right one.
4. See if the disk is assigned a drive letter. If you're having my problem it won't have one. If you do you can try skipping some of the next steps, but I'm not sure it'll work for any other problem.
5. Right click the disk. Tip: Don't click the box where it says Disk #, click the wider box to the right with the info in it.

*continuing in another edit*
6. Create a partition and follow the steps. Now you're device will be recognized and show up in the My Computer folder again under whatever drive letter you assigned.

7. Now if you try to click the drive in My Computer it's going to ask you to format. Formating erases everything and I was not able to find a way to get the files without erasing BUT, I found a way to get them after erasing. So if you read through everything then format the drive.

8. Here's why I said to read through, to get through this step you need to download a program. Either legally or illegally, whatever you want to do. If you download and need a key, email me, just put it in the subject or I might delete. The program you need is. Recover My Files. I stand by this and it supposedly works for recovering files from other places even ones never saved. It recovered everything even stuff I had long since deleted on my portable hard drive.

*continuing*
9. After you download the program it won't ask you for a key until you need to save your files. Scan for what you're looking for, but don't do a quick scan. You'll have to select all the file types you want to find. This is good if you are only looking for one specific or a few specific things. I needed to restore mostly my movies/anime. This will take AWHILE depending on what you want and how many files were once where you're looking. Make sure you have stable power because I got all the way to the end of a 3 hour search and my comp turned off.
10. After the search you'll have to go through the list to find what you want, I suggest searching by name, file size or type.

After that just save the files (I put them on the desktop so they wouldn't mix up with my other files) and you're done! Worked like a charm. Hopefully it works for everyone else.

Answer
Well, one of two things have happened.

A. The Hard Drive is failing and the partition table information was on the portion of the disc that is damaged.

2. The controller has failed and is not allowing the drive to communicate with the computer.

What you need to do is go to your start menu and click "run" and type "diskmgmt.msc" into the dialog box. If you have vista, just type that into the field on the start menu.

This will bring up a window that lists the drives installed on your computer. Find the one that is associated with the drive you are having issues with and check to see if it recognizes a partition or not. If not, then the partition is bad and you would need to recreate it and reformat it.

The problem with that is that doing so will erase all the data on the drive. So if there is important stuff on it, you should go to a repair shop and see if they can recover the data.

If you don't mind losing the data that was on the drive, then simply right click on the drive in question and select "format" then just set it to "NTFS" and hit Ok.

How can I remove a virus from my portable hard drive?

Grace

I know there is a trojan on it and I know exactly what file it's in but everytime I plug it into my mac I get a pop-up saying "this file contains a trojan" and I can't get anywhere near it to even delete the file.

Does anyone know how I can get rid of it? I took it to a computer shop but they weren't helpful at all unless I paid them crap loads of money.

Ok, thanks in advance to anyone that can help.

Answer
Windows XP:
Your computer needs to be NTFS to see the large hdd, and to use files larger than 4 gig. If you computer is Fat32, then it will not see a large external or internal drive when the files in a folder on that drive add up to more than 4gb.
The drive needs to be NTFS because when you start adding files to it, eventually it will freeze.

Fat32 to NTFS
-------------------
you can change the file system with out losing the data

To Check your hard drive, flash drive or external hard drive do this. They ALL need to be NTFS to handle today's large size file addressing..

Open my computer, right click the drive >properties. In the pop up it will say FAT or NTFS in the file system. If its FAT you need to change it to NTFS to handle large files and drive sizes.

Do it in this order:
1, Open my computer> right click the drive >properties >tools >check now >tick both boxes to clear the disk of any errors, then:
2. defrag the drive (tools)
3. Enter the convert command like this:
say the usb drive is F:
Click Start > Run > "convert F: /fs:ntfs /v /nosecurity /x" without the quotes.

same for your C drive. (paste above convert command and change the drive letter)

I have done this a lot and never lost any data. Just don't interfere or take risks. The biggest risk is a power failure while its doing it. It doesn't take long. If you find it doesn't do the conversion, then run Chkdisk to fix errors then try again.

You can read about it in XP help files.
Click start >help and support >type format in the search â look in the overviews.

Formatting External Hard Drive?

linkinpark

I have an Iomega 500gb External Hard Drive. It's currently formatted as NTFS, and works fine, but I'm trying to hook it up to my Playstation 3 and it needs to be Fat32 format. Is it possible to do this without erasing everything on my hard drive, and still leaving it compatible with my PC as well? Not sure if it matters, but I'm running Windows Vista, and the most updated PS3 firmware.

Answer
You cannot change the format from NTFS to FAT32 without destroying the data on the hard drive. Microsoft provides a way to go the other way (FAT32 to NTFS) without destroying your data, but no way to go back.

Backup your data to another drive or computer before continuing.

Further, you cannot format your 500Gb hard drive as FAT32 anyway because FAT32 only supports partitions up to 32Gb in size. Instead, I suggest that you delete the partition on your external hard drive and recreate the partitions using Disk Management (right click on Computer and select Manage from the popup menu). Then in the left pane find Disk Management and left click on it. Create a 32 Gb partition and a 468Gb partition. Format the 32Gb partition as FAT32 and format the 468Gb partition as NTFS.

You will get two drive letters after formatting, one for each partition. Restore your data back to the external hard drive. Use the FAT32 partition for your Playstation 3, and the NTFS partition for everything you normally used it for.

Here's more information on Maximum partition sizes:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/windows2000serv/reskit/core/fncc_fil_tvjq.mspx?mfr=true

[EDIT]
An interesting note on that Microsoft limits webpage. FAT32 supports up to 1 terrabyte, but Microsoft limits the maximum partition size to 32Gb for Windows 2000 and later, and to 127Gb for Windows 98. Obviously this is another attempt by Microsoft to control how we use our computers, and to force us into NTFS as volumes get larger and larger.

Well after writing the above answer, it occured to me that there might be a third party format program that would allow the entire 500Gb hard drive to be formatted as FAT32. Well, golly gee whiz, there seem to be a ton of them. Some free, some not so free. Perhaps you can format the whole 500Gb as FAT32.
http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&aq=h1&oq=maximum%20size%20fat32&ie=UTF-8&rlz=1T4GGLL_enUS315US315&q=format+FAT32+utility

If you try any of these, send me an email, tell me which one you tried, how well it worked, and whether you have any trouble accessing the drive once its done.

I just recently bought a Portable Hard Drive?

LIL ONE

i bought a Western Digital MyPassport Hard Drive (500GB USB 2.0-3.0)

any Opinions if this is reliable or not?
I am not going to have it connected all the time, it is storage for all my Personal Files. I plan to connect it about every 2 months just to transfer new files into it, but thats about it.

What do you think? Can I rely on it for a long time?

Answer
Ya you can rely on it. Portable hard drives were ment to hold lots of things for longer periods of times(greater than your computer will probably last).

Accessing my WD portable hard drive?

William

I have a western digital portable hard drive that I've used to back up my hard drive. I typically use it on my mac. It shows up fine on the mac and is useable. However, I'm now trying to transfer files from my mac to pc and the pc is not recognizing the hard drive. It appears in the disk management, but without an assigned letter. It does not appear to give me the option to assign a letter either. Any way I can do this without reformatting the drive? Sometimes I really hate apple.......... this only helps build that case.

Answer
What format was done when you initally setup the drive? If you used FAT32 it should be (notice that should be) readable by either machine. Anyother format and you have a problem. Here is Apples information on moving data.... http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1408?viewlocale=en_US
Of course that is from PC to MAC not MAC to PC but the answer is basically the same.

You can "network" the two machines then move data from the "shared" USB drive to the PC from the network share! That would be the easiest at this point.

PS - Don't really blame Apple or the PC the same issue applies with Linux, or any other operating system these days. Sometimes even early PC to new systems have the same type issues, I really never understood that one!

How can I make my CD receiver play music from a WD portable hard drive?

LUX

I have a Sony XplÅd that has a usb port. I have a WD portable hard drive of 500 GB. Is there a certain way that the music folder must be arranged or named in order for it to be played? All the songs are in mp3 format. Plase help, I know that it can play other mp3 players. And I read from a user comment that his receiver can play some music files from his portable hard drive.
Thanks for helping.

Answer
Well, you do not seem to understand how computers and hard drives work. The computer has software in it that will send signals to the hard drive to retrieve the music files that are stored there and then loads them into memory. Then an application program like iTunes will read that file and convert it into digital sound signals which are then sent to a digital to analog converter and are then sent out over a wire to the speakers where it comes out as the sound that you hear. Your Sony Xplod (CD receiver) has software that receives digital music files that are send over the USB from the CD player and then stores then converts it into sound so it will play the music. You see the software in your Sony does not have the same software that the computer has in it. Actually, you Sony does not even have software but firmware. Anyway the firmware/software, the logic that controls how the data is moved and manipulated in the computer is what allows it work work the way it does. The firmware in your hard drive knows how to communicate with your computer but does not know how to communicate with your Sony. The Sony knows how to communicate with your CD player but, was not programmed to be able to retrieve files from an external hard drive and play them. So, it's kind of like one of these situation where you really can't get there from here, you know what I mean?

How to connect external hard drive to network?

KRV

let me start by saying I am very technology dumb. I was told that it is possible to hook my external hard drive to our wireless network.
I am interested in doing so for two reasons...
1. to be able to access the folders on it from either laptop in the house.
2. to watch movies saved to it via the x-box????

Is this possible and how do I go about it?
I have verizon wireless

Answer
You can connect the external HDD to one of the computers and then "Share" it across the network where all users on all computers will be able to see the shared files.

In order for you to stream video to the XBox you will need to setup "Windows Media Centre" on the same computer.

You cant just connect the external HDD to the network, you need a NAS (Network Attached Storage) device for this.

Question About External Media Hard Drives for HP?

Corey N

So my HP (HP Pavilion Elite) sounds like it is on death's door. Something is wrong with it and I'm going to send it in to get fixed but I have a large amount of music, movies and documents I want to save before I send it to get repaired. Last time they said everything would be fine and my computer got wiped, so I am taking no chances.

I don't know anything about computers, all I know is on the front of my computer is says "Media Drive Bay" which is for a portable media drive that I can load all of my media files/documents onto and not have to worry.

What are some good brands that you would suggest that are compatible with an HP.

Answer
If you want to use an external hard drive to save your media files to, I'm pretty sure that all hard drive manufacturers make them. they are very easy to use, most are simply plug and play. They install their own drivers when they are plugged in automatically.
Western Digital, Seagate, Toshiba, ect all make them, and they all are very reliable, and easy to use. Not to mention, they are quite inexpensive. A 2 terabyte drive can cost as low as $94.00. This makes them a very good deal. it's best to save all your media files directly to them, after you get one. you can access the files in "My Computer" in Windows platforms. I don't know the formats for Mac or Linux, but I'm sure that they are equally simple.
I hope this helps you out. Good luck, & have fun with your files!

What external portable hard drive is best for my Macbook and Dell desktop PC?

ddkreft88

I regularly switch from these 2 computers . My Simpletech is now giving me problems as it cannot load or read to my Mac so forget that brand. I am choosing between Maxtor, Toshiba or Western Digital. Any pros and cons? Thanks!

Answer
I'm a big fan of Seagate hard drives but that's my preference. I would look at warranties for all the products you are looking at.

Also getting a regular size drive and putting it in an external enclosure will be a cheaper option but the draw back is that it will need it's own power source.

Also with the issue with your simpletech hard drive. I would copy all data off it then reformat it. I bet this brings your drive back to life on your mac. For instructions check out here http://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/partitioning_tiger.html

Be very careful not to format the wrong drive.

What are the common problems with portable hard drive?

Kshatriya

I mean when it starts to show problems (e.g. getting too much hot, hang-up), what are the usual problems we face?

Answer
Place too many files on the hard disk. Then it will hang. Other probable cause is the wire. If your hard drive doesn't come on a integrated USB. Then the wiring may become a problem because of repeated unplug and re-plug. And if your files inside your drive is not arrange or put it on a folder. There's a chance that it will catch a virus. Virus like the 'recycler' folder. Unless you delete this folder whenever you connect your drive to the pc. This acts as a catalyst for a computer virus rendering it unable to access you drive. It will display "This drive is not formatted. Do you want to reformat?" dialog.

160 GB Western Digital Passport Portable Hard Drive??

I was considering a oyen mini portable hard drive. is oyen a good company?

Answer
Oyen is an awesome drive. I have two and I am super impressed with them. They fit in your shirt pocket or purse: it is super quiet and very fast;doesn't heat up much at all in use. I use my personal one for photography, and I know I will never fill them up; they can be partitioned very easily; come with FREE online backup service when your away from your physical HD back up; they are about the size of an iPod,and work off of only one wire on your USB drive. No extra cords to mess with, and very easy and simple software for use. You can read my review of the Oyen 1TB Mini Portable hard drive here http://jimehle.com I give this drive 5 starts out of 5. You can use it for any backup that you may need. Infact I use it for my business computer system...I have four machines that I back up... and find it reliable and easy for my back room gals to use. The best buy and product on the market for the dollar spent.

Recommendations for portable hard drives?

Dubious

I have used USB sticks for everything. Now, I am running out of space on my 16GB one, and since the prices for 32GB and 64GB USB sticks are close to bigger drives, I might as well buy one. USB sticks are small and convenient, but I don't want multiple USB sticks to fiddle around with.

Most prices I've seen online are £60 for 500GB and £80 for 1TB. I might not need 1TB memory, but is it a worthwhile investment?

Does anyone have recommendations for the smallest / cheapest / reliable / fast portable hard drives?

Answer
1TB is quite a lot of space. My recommendation would be, if you don't think you can fill it up now, then get a smaller drive. Hard drive prices are currently inflated due to the floods in Thailand, but once pricing returns to normal, you can expect prices to keep going down. By this time next year, I wouldn't be surprised to see prices down 30% - 50% per GB. Buy what you need now, and upgrade when the need arises (usually for a much lower price). That's true for hard drives, and it's true for pretty much all electronics.

If you want high reliability, I'd recommend you build your own. All you need is a hard drive, and an enclosure. By selecting your own hard drive, you get to cherry-pick the best hard drive you can afford, and pair it with an aesthetically pleasing enclosure.

My recommendation would be a 750GB Western Digital Scorpio Blue. It's a 2.5" laptop hard drive, so the form factor is very portable. It's also very quiet, and very reliable. Western Digital is almost universally regarded as the best current HDD manufacturer. The Scorpio Blue is also reasonably fast (It's WD's mid-range laptop model), and should easily max out a USB 2.0 connection.

Pair the HDD with a cheap USB 2.0 enclosure like one of these:
http://www.dealextreme.com/p/2-5-inch-aluminum-sata-hard-disk-enclosure-usb-2-0-port-11914?r=43327236
http://www.dealextreme.com/p/2-5-sata-usb-2-0-hdd-enclosure-with-leather-pouch-black-51124?r=43327236

If you insist on getting a pre-built external hard drive, I'd recommend the Western Digital Elements 500GB portable version. It's a little more expensive per GB than the prices you stated you found online, but is well worth it. I have been using my old 640 GB model for the better part of 4 years without a single problem. The reviews on Amazon are almost all positive.

how to change portable hard drive to fat 32 for ps3 slim?

Q. how do you change for hard drive from ntfs to fat 32 on a compaq 4000 labtop

Answer
The PS3 will not format an external hard drive to FAT32 if it is already formatted to NTFS. You have to use your Windows Operating System to format it. However, some Windows OS have limitations on formatting to FAT32, so you could try using a free third party program, like CompuApps Swissknife (can be downloaded for free on www.download.com).

Upgrading PS3 Hard drive ?

el barrio

Can I do this :

Buy a 2.5" 5400 RPM which is 250GB or 320GB(any brand) hard drive to replace the original 40GB PS3 HDD ?

1)Are these steps of changing the HDD correct ? I don't want to backup game installs and themes.

1) take out the original 40GB HDD out of the PS3.
2) Insert the new HDD into the PS3.
3) Put the original 40GB HDD into an enclosure to make it an external HDD.
4) Plug the external HDD into the USB port of the PS3.
5) Copy all my data like musics, photos and game saves from the external HDD into the new HDD after it is formatted in the PS3.

The PS3 will format the new HDD after it is inserted into the PS3, right ?
What's the difference of using quick format and normal format ?
What will the size of the 250 GB and 320 GB HDD available on the PS3 after being formatted ?
My 40GB only shows 37GB.

2) Do I need to perform the system update again ?
My PS3 system version is 2.42.
3) Does my PSN account remains in the PS3 ?
I don't want to create a new PSN account.
4) Do my settings in the PS3 remain the same ?

Answer
Ps3 will not read another Ps3 hardrive in an external enclosrue, os steps 3-5 will not complelty work.

-Basically back all the stuff you do want (gmae saves, music, movies etc) before taking out hte 40GB. ( maybe do it witha flash drive and copy it over in little bits)
to back up hit triangle, and either copy or copy all to external device. the game saves are in Game - saved data utility- gamesaves.
-swap over the dfrives( be careful with the blue screw, it rounds off easily)
-boot up Ps3
-format it(it may ask for latestlfrimware so download it of the Sony website and put on a flash drive/new 40gb portable hdd)
-copy fiels back over. same as backing up, but go to external device n hit copy - to ps3.

2. yes, the main PS3 OS is in hte Ps3, but hte firmware needs to be on hte HDD
3. its not on the Ps3, but you jsut sign in wiht your exisiting account.(so remeber your password :P)
4. settings go back to factory defualt.

oh n to format hte 40GB to a usuable FAT32 hardrvie use Compu Swissknife ( windows can only format to a max of 32gb)

any more info jsut email i recently upgraded my 40Gb to 320gb, so the process is pretty fresh in my mind

How to put files on my Seagate Portable Hard Drive?

Brian

I got a Seagate Hard drive a few months ago from Argos although my only use for it is to record shows on my Sony TV. Originally this is not what I bought this hard drive for. But when I dismount it from my tv and connect it to my laptop, it does not show up in 'My Computer' instead it is listed as a Hard Drive in 'My Devices', this means I cannot put files or take files off of the Hard drive. I was just wondering if anyone has a solution for this problem or if I should just go to a computer specialist.
Thank you (:

Answer
It appears that either

1. Sony is using a filesystem format not recognised by your PC
2. The disk is encrypted so nothing else can read it.

If you're adventurous you could try reading it from a "live" Linux-based distribution as such systems can often handle many more filesystem types than either Windows or Mac. But since the TV is by Sony it's very probable the disk is encrypted (so you can't simply copy off the TV programmes you've recorded).

When plugging it into my xbox it doesnt even recognise it yet my friend also has a Western Digital hardrive and his works fine on his xbox 360. Please help as i bought the portable hard drive to play my music and films on my xbox. Also my pc is windows vista?
how do i format it to FAT32

Answer
Try formatting the drive to FAT32

Is there an external hard drive for xbox 360?

Revofevil2

Answer
You can connect a portable hard drive with a USB cable into your Xbox. I don't think you can save games or anything related to Xbox onto the HD, but you can use it for music, pictures and videos. The standard computer hard drive doesn't have the correct format to hold Xbox content. You have to format your hard drive to FAT32 before using it though. You can do that by downloading partition magic off the Internet and creating 4GB FAT32 partitions. You can make partitions without downloaded software depending on your hard drive storage capacity. Look at the source for more details.

i need some advices to buy a new hard drive?

KSAGirl

I want to buy a new external hard drive , around 350 to 500 GB , but i don't know what is the best hard drive !!
cause i have lots of movies and i want them to be save in a hard drive for ever ! is it possible ? or i can lose data ?

Answer
I just received my copy of the January issue of PC World Magazine and it has a review article on external hard drives, the article's title is "The Wide World of External Drives." Its a great article reviewing 10 top notched drives divided in to 2 catagories, portable and desktop external hard drive. You are probably best off with a desktop external hard drive since you just want to backup your movies. The more compact and portable a drive is the most expensive it becomes. Personally, my preference is for Western Digital and Maxtor. I have both products and they are extremely reliable. Please read the article for all the reviews:

"The Wide World of External Drives: Today's options provide impressive combinations of speed, interfaces, features, and software." -- written by Narasu Rebbapragada (http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,127545/article.html#)

It is a shame that Black Friday has come and gone. The day after Thanksgiving is called "Black Friday" and it is the number one shopping day of the year. Stores slash prices hoping to attract customers. Best Buy was selling a Western Digital 250GB external hard drive for $59.99 (no rebates). If you can hold off buying the hard drive until Christmas, you can save a lot of money because stores like Best Buy or Circuit City will have holiday specials on computers and accessories.

Installing a portable hard drive to more than one computer?

Q. I recently got my first portable hard drive, a WD Elements. My friends said that they didnt even have to install there hard drives, they just plugged it in and it would work like a normal USB so that is what I expected. Except for mine, I realised I had to install it. So I partitioned it and everything for my Macbook by using support.wdc.com, but what happens if i wnat to drag files onto my hard drive from another computer? I have a PC desk top and I want to drag some movies from it onto my hard drive. I tried installing it onto the PC as well, but it wouldn't work... any help?

Answer
I'm not totally sure about this but it is more advisable to format the drive under Windows using FAT32 (not NTFS) as it would be recognized by both PC and Mac. As far as I know, PCs do not recognize anything outside the world of Microsoft. Macs (and Linux boxes) are more adaptive. If your Mac fails to recognize the drive automatically, you can try forcing it manually. Under Linux that would mean typing "mount -t msdos /dev/sd-something /tosomewhere". I'm not familiar with the Mac although I know it's distantly related to Linux nowadays.

External Hard Drives: Music and JPGs, files as well?

Answer
You can store any type of files on your Portable Hard Drive! Pictures, MP3s, Videos, Programs,....etc.

Can I transfer data to a portable hard drive from my old PS3 and then transfer it to the PS3 Slim?

krayzie_61

Answer
You should be able to do it with a flash drive. I recently bought a 4GB flash drive at Walmart for $15 to back up my game saves. I'm sure if you can put them on the flash drive, you can access them from another PS3. I would recommend trying that. You don't even need a big flash drive, just transfer the data, clear the flash drive, then move more data.

If I partition my portable Hard Drive, will everything get erased?

Apple

I'm trying to move everything over to my external so that I can partition it without having to backup anything but it's not really going so well, so I was just wondering if I could make an NTFS partition right now instead.

Answer
In XP, if you use the Windows tools, you will lose your data. If you use a tool like Partition Magic, your data will be preserved.

If you have Vista or Windows 7, the ability to resize an existing partition is built in to the OS.

Lost USB Cable for External Hard Drive?

orange.nes

I've lost a USB cable for a WD My Passport Essential SE to connect up to the computer. It's not the same USB 2.0 cable as the WD Elements for some reason. Both has the USB end, obviously, but the other end for the My Passport is a little rounded, and the Elements one is the more common one I've seen on phone chargers.

Here's the pictures if you don't get my horrible explanations:
Elements: http://www.wdc.com/global/images/products/img2/300/wdfElements_BAAR.jpg
My Passport Essential: http://www.wdc.com/global/images/products/img2/300/wdfMP_SEEssential.jpg

Does anyone know if that cable is readily available at Dicksmith of JB-HIFI (Australia) and at what price range?

Would appreciate any help. I'm such a noob at cables...

Portable encryption software for external hard drive?

USN Brat

Is there a portable piece of software that encrypts your entire external hard drive? (Or at least password protects it) I want to be able to use it on all computers that I use, but be prompted to enter a password in order to access the content.

Any help is appreciated.

Answer
"TrueCrypt is a software system for establishing and maintaining an on-the-fly-encrypted volume (data storage device). On-the-fly encryption means that data is automatically encrypted or decrypted right before it is loaded or saved, without any user intervention. No data stored on an encrypted volume can be read (decrypted) without using the correct password/keyfile(s) or correct encryption keys. Entire file system is encrypted (e.g., file names, folder names, contents of every file, free space, meta data, etc). "

What portable hard drive would you recommend (preferably 1TB)?

Jordan

I am looking into buying a portable hard drive. I study Graphic Design at college and a Hard drive would be useful. I currently have a USB which is only 4GB which I feel won't be enough.

I have some factors to consider

Reliability: Fast and easy to use and doesn't experience regular problems.

Portability: Easy to travel with.

Durability/Lasting factor: Doesn't brake easily and lasts for a long time

Memory: As I said before preferably a 1TB (3.0 USB hard drive)

Price: I am looking around the price of £50-£100 for an external hard drive.

I have had so many mixed reviews on external hard drives I'm finding it difficult to make a firm decision. All Answers will be appreciated but the best answer will be the one that best fits my criteria :D

Answer
iomega is very reliable. it also has a warranty that comes with it (every external hard drive does).

Many students at my school get WD (Western Digital) because it's cheaper, but many of them had issue with it (it's not connecting, it crashes easily, etc. etc.)

Iomega works well. It doesn't overheat like some of Seagate does.

Seagate overheats and not many student use it.

G (sold at Mac stores) have pretty good ratings. But I don't know of many people who have this, and not many ratings online (last time I checked).

Online at tech forums, people rate and crit which external hard drives works best and is most reliable. You can also check Best Buy and compare each hard drive with one another. You should also go into the hard drive company's website/forums which will most likely have buyer's ratings. You should check those.

When I did that, Iomega had best ratings. It also runs on Firewire, which is far faster than regular USB which most hard drives still rely on. When you work with large files, it's best to have firewire. Saves you time.

Will doing a custom install of Windows 7 affect my partitions?

NicholaiC

I want to do a custom install of Windows 7 Ultimate instead of upgrade, i have my disk partitioned twice where i have very important files. I do not have the resources to store them on a portable drive so i want to know if doing this custom install will delete the information in my partitions.

Answer
During the install process you will be presented with a list of partitions that currently exist on your hard drive, and will be asked to select where to install Windows to.
As long as you pay attention, identify your partitions (according to their different sizes) in this list, you will have no trouble selecting the right partition to install to. The other partitions will not be touched.
So make sure all your data is stored on one partition, know its size, know the main partition size. This is where you will be installing Windows. It is best not to have valuable data on this partition, so move it to the other partition.
During the install make sure you choose the right one, and you should be just fine.

Will windows 7 screw up system recovery?

Rob F

I currently have windows xp on my laptop and I was thinking about giving windows 7 a go just to try a change. Now with my windows xp sp 2. When i turn on my laptop i can hit F11 and it returns my laptop to the day i bought it. (very useful!!) It is a gateway laptop. Now my question is if i install windows 7 will it take this feature away from me?

Thanks a lot.

Also does anything know if i can use my external drive to install linux and run it off the external drive?

Answer
There are two partitions on your hard drive. The small one (usually around 5GB or so) is the recovery partition. As long as you don't delete or format that partition when installing WIndows 7, you'll be fine. You can install any operating system on any storage device (portable hard drive, sd card, usb stick) just as long as your motherboard supports booting from an external device. If it does, install away!

It's not a "hidden" partition. You can easily delete it if you don't know what you are doing! When you install any OS it shows all partitions on the hard drive. Make sure you choose the only obvious one that has your current OS and all of your data (I'm assuming you already backed everything up?)

I just bought a 500 GB portable hard drive.?

shryock86

I created a volume with truecrypt and tried putting files on it that are over 4 GB. It wont let me because that volume is in fat32. Is there anyway I can get it to change to ntfs without ruining the files I have on it ?

Answer
How to convert FAT32 Disk to NTFS in Windows Vista and XP with the Convert utility?

Back up data in the partition or drive that you want to convert, to another drive or partition or another computer system or PC or any other storage media.

In Windows XP:

Click <Start> â> <Run>
Enter âcmdâ into the text field labeled âOpenâ.
Click <OK> button
If you want to convert drive D (D:), enter the command âvol d:â in the command window, to find the volume label for the D: partition
Then enter the command âconvert d: /fs:ntfsâ to convert the D: partition from FAT32 to NTFS
When prompted, enter the volume label for the partition
In Windows Vista:

Click <Start> sphere
In the Start Menu search box, simply enter âcmdâ and hit enter.
If you want to convert drive D (D:), enter the command âconvert d: /fs:ntfsâ to convert the D: partition from FAT32 to NTFS

You can use the âconvert /?â command to bring up information on how to manage the conversion. As long as the drive or partition or disk that you want to convert is not in use, FAT32 to NTFS conversion will happen without any issues. Otherwise, the conversion must be postponed for the next time you reboot the computer system or PC. On Windows Vista start up, you will be prompted to either cancel or carry on with the conversion. The FAT32 to NTFS conversion process is fully automated and it involves a couple of restarts.Let Windows vista or XP to do the conversion.

Question about external drives/vista?

i have a 100 gb hard drive and 512 ram laptop. as of right now i have less than 5 free gb on my laptop. so if i switch to vista my best alternative(as i was told) is to buy an external drive. External hard drive not detected - Solutions?

JVJ100

My 2.5" 320GB Transcend external HDD, which I had for about a year now (and has just passed its warranty date) suddenly died on me! When I plug it in, the green "safely remove" icon appears on the taskbar, but when I open "My Computer" there's no letter drive! I tried "Disk management" and it doesn't appear there either! I tried using it on other PCs, but to no avail! Thankfully, there wasnt any IMPORTANT data in there, but still...It was more convenient than my 1.5TB 3.5" HDD which just sits on my desk all day!! At this point, i'm pretty certain my HDD is dead. But if anyone out there has any solution to the problem, please let me know!!

Answer
Have you tried it on another computer? That verifies if it's the drive or the computer reading it...

If the drive does not show up in disk management, then either it has lost it's partition information, or actually died, most likely died...
If the USB icon comes on, then the electronics in the drive may still be alive.

One final test, before throwing it out, is to take it apart, remove the drive, and plug it into some desktop, to see if it is the disk, or the interface electronics in the portable unit - the drive may still be good until you determine by this test...

Which is the better hard drive of the three? Can you list pros and cons for each?

elciguy

1. Seagate FreeAgent Go
2. WD Elements
3. WD Passport

Answer
1) Seagate Freeagent Pro

Freeagents tend to have lower prices per GB than the WD Passport, but their quality is not as good as it used to be. They are small and portable, requiring only a single USB cable to operate.

2) WD Elements

WD quality and very rugged design. I own the previous generation 640GB Elements, and it is the most stable and durable ext HDD I have ever owned. These drives are designed to last and are also the cheapest drives per GB of these 3. It might be a bit bulky to be truly considered portable. It requires a separate AC power adapter in addition to the USB cable.

3) WD Passport

Quality is generally not up to WD standards. Small and sleek design. It's a truly portable HDD with only one USB cable. However, you pay for the portability and design through the steep price tag.

4) The Wild Card:

Toshiba Canvios are a good alternative to Freeagents and Passports. They are just as small and portable, but are generally more reliable.

I'd say the WD Elements is the best of the 3, but the fact that it has an external AC adapter means it's not as portable as the other drives. If you need portability and only one USB cable for power and data , then the Toshiba Canvio Plus would be my recommendation.

Which should i buy (dell laptop for college)? PLEASE HELP?

taryn

i'm really dumb when it comes to certain things about computers.. so

which one is better, they're both the same price...

1. A portable laptop with a big punch - Core i5, 4GB memory and 500GB hard drive included

or

2. Do more for the same everyday low price with Core i3 power, 6GB memory and 640GB storage

thanks!

Answer
It would depend on what type of applications you plan on running. If all you are doing is word processing, spreadsheets, web surfing, e-mail etc, then the i3 will be fine, but if you plan on editing photos or video, or running CAD/CAM type software then the i5 would be best. Also, you should NOT buy Dell, they have the worst reputation for reliability. Better brands for reliability would be Asus, Toshiba, Samsung, or Lenovo. Here are a few models to consider:

Can a bag with magnets damage my portable hard drive, ipod, and/or psp?

Joe Benite

I got a bag as a present that can carry all or most of my personal gadgets (WD 160GB hard drive, PDA, iPod nano, headphones, digital camera). The proble is that is has 4 magnets (2 on the body 2 in the flap) and I consider them to be relatively strong. Can this erase my HD//Flash Memory, MSDuo, SD card, or camera?

Answer
It will have a GREAT possibility of damaging your hard drive.
Your PDA shouldnt since it uses flash memory.
WILL not damage your iPod , as long as it is not the video iPods, those have hard drives and are/is possible to be damaged.
PSP will not be damaged, since it uses flash memory
Digital Camera will not, since it uses flash memory.
Headphones already contain magnets.

what is a portable hard drive and what is it for?

AllyKat

and, do you have to get one when you buy a laptop?

Answer
A portable hardrive is just what the name says it is: it's portable and it is a hardrive with data storage. An iPod, in essence, is a portable hardrive. You usually use PH's to back up your files should your computer crash. They used to be Firewire (which is really hard to find anymore), but now everything is usually with a USB connection which is faster. You connect the PH to your computer via the USB port and the computer will usually automatically recognize it as a storage device. Then you can drag-and-drop whatever files you want to put there. A portable hadrive cannot work as a standalone computer.

Portable hard drives and xbox 360?

ScaryPanda

can you download themes and gamer pics on your computer and then put them on one of those little memory sticks that are like 8gb and then download them for your xbox and use them?

Answer
No. You can only transfer media (music, pictures, etc.) from your PC to 360. Games saves, demos, gamerpics, and any other game data cannot be saved or transferred via a flash or external drive. You can use a flash drive to transfer a background or wallpaper from your PC and set it as your 360 background, but it's not a whole theme.
