How to put files on my Seagate Portable Hard Drive?

Brian

I got a Seagate Hard drive a few months ago from Argos although my only use for it is to record shows on my Sony TV. Originally this is not what I bought this hard drive for. But when I dismount it from my tv and connect it to my laptop, it does not show up in 'My Computer' instead it is listed as a Hard Drive in 'My Devices', this means I cannot put files or take files off of the Hard drive. I was just wondering if anyone has a solution for this problem or if I should just go to a computer specialist.
Thank you (:

Answer
It appears that either

1. Sony is using a filesystem format not recognised by your PC
2. The disk is encrypted so nothing else can read it.

If you're adventurous you could try reading it from a "live" Linux-based distribution as such systems can often handle many more filesystem types than either Windows or Mac. But since the TV is by Sony it's very probable the disk is encrypted (so you can't simply copy off the TV programmes you've recorded).

I want a hard drive that can power off my computer,No plug needed,..Whats the name of these types?

Rachel

Im getting it from argos,.Can you name a few good ones?

Answer
Some of the smaller HDs don't require a plug in. I know buffalo makes a 160GB drive that powers off the USB port of the computer.

Try these from argon:

Maxtor 250Gb Portable Laptop Hard Drive
Buffalo 160Gb MiniStation TurboUSB Portable Hard Drive
