Is there an Mp3 player that is a drag and drop and is bigger than 20 gb of space?

Razor

I want to save all my music in a portable mp3 player. is there one that is drag and drop that doesn't require programs like zune or itunes to import and is 20gb or bigger?

Answer
i'll start off by clarifying that the ipod is not drag n drop compatible (you probably know this already, but considering the other answers i thought it was worth mentioning). if you want true drag n drop, (ie, an mp3 player that acts like a portable hard drive,) what you need is an MSC (mass storage compliant) player (which the ipod is not).
now, there aren't a whole lot of msc compatible hard drive players out there. what i would recommend (if your primary interest is music) is the Creative Zen Vision: M. It comes in 30GB and 60GB sizes, and appears to be a pretty soild player (earning an 8.0 and an editors choice at cnet.com). it may not be the most elegant device on the market, but it got great reviews and has way more features than the ipod (or zune for that matter).

EDIT: my bad. the zen vision m is NOT msc. however, if you use windows xp or vista, it'd still be fine with drag n drop.

What's the difference between a Desktop External Hard Drive and a External Portable Hard Drive?

portable hard drive use image

Colin H

I have a laptop and I would like to get an external hard drive to backup my data. I was wondering the difference between a Desktop External Hard Drive and a External Portable Hard Drive. Can I use a Desktop External Hard Drive with my laptop? Or not? Please be as detailed as you can as I am somewhat computer illiterate. All help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Both would work with your laptop as they both use a USB port to connect to your computer, which both laptops and desktops are equipped with.

Desktop Eternal Hard drive- It is physically larger and is used for larger storage needs. These drives need to be plugged in to their own power supply in order to work. This doesn't necessarily mean you can't pick up the drive and take it with you, it's just that it's larger and more cumbersome, because it needs to be plugged into an outlet in order to run. So these are ideal for leaving on your desk at home or work.

Pros: More storage capacity
Cons: Needs an outside power source

External Portable Hard Drive: A smaller physical drive, therefore more portable. It doesn't require an outside power source. It will run off the power from your laptop. These tend to have small storage capacities than the Desktop Drives though. But they are also small enough to thrown in your laptop bag or backpack on the go as they tend to have a low profile.

Pro: Small and portable, No external power needed
Con: Smaller storage capacities, draws power from your laptop and can be battery draining if constantly plugged in.

So you need to figure out what you'll be using the drive for. If it's just for storing and backing up your system, go for the desktop drive. If you think you'll be using the external drive to backup files on the go, or transporting files, go with the portable drive. I can guarantee both with work with your computer. It is just a matter of figuring out your needs.

Will downloading and running a program from a portable hard drive affect your computer?

Will downloading and running a program off of a portable hard drive affect your computer if the program has a virus/infection on it?

Answer
Eraser Portable can wipe any hard drive, optical media, files, folders, encrypted data, the Recycle Bin, and pretty much any other data you want to kill. It may not be an app you use every day, but it's a great utility to throw on your thumb drive, iPod, or other portable device for those times you do need a quick, secure delete.

What's the life expectancy for external hard drives and flash drives?

best external hard drive solid state image

Zach Brown

Currently, I own a 320 gb external hard drive that's 2 years old and a 1 tb external hard drive that's 1 year old. Both are by Seagate. Also, I own a variety of flash drives, 1 of which is a 1 gb flash drive that I got back in 2007 and it still works fine. I use my external hard drives 2-3 times a year for 30 minutes to 2 hours usually while I use my flash drives for numerous reasons. If I keep this pattern, how long should I expect them to last?

Answer
That is a good question, solid state devices have a life cycle and do ware out. MECHANICAL hard drives
do too, a good guess (by a tech) 5 or more years, like maybe 10 years... If you are lucky and get a small problem, it is best to take it out of service, as it may be going bad...

Playing games off of an external hard drive?

Trevor

I recently purchased a dell mini netbook with a 30 gig solid state drive. could i take games such as baldurs gate icewind dales etc. and run them off the external hard drive without using much space?

Answer
USB2.0 even at high speed is slower than SATA so it is not worth it even if you had a solid state drive.
Unless you are using eSATA or internal SATA, forget it. -- It will be slower.

DELETING CLUTTER ON THE COMPUTER
DO IN THE FOLLOWING ORDER:

RECOMMENDED TO DO EVERY WEEK
or when the computer or a program is acting/running slow and sluggish.

The following are purely the steps to take; this is not a detailed outline of what to do. Due to never having used a Mac, these options may be slightly different.

Cookies
Go into Control panel, then click on Internet options, Temporary Internet Files, Delete cookies, and then Delete Files, and Clear History. Depending on your Internet Options program due to differences in Internet Explorer 6 & 7, this may change; if it does, do the following instead.

If you go into Internet Options & see a Browsing History button click on it, click on the delete all button, another box will come up and make sure to check mark the box that says also âdelete files and settings stored by add-onsâ and click on Yes.

Disk Cleanup
Click on Start at bottom of screen; go to All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and Disk Cleanup

Disk Defragmenter
Click on Start at bottom of screen; go to All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and Disk Defragmenter

SEARCH FILES & FOLDERS
Click on Start, then Search, All files & folders, type in *.tmp in the âall or part of a file nameâ box, then in the âlook inâ box make sure to click on the down arrow button and click on the C:\ drive or if you have more than one local hard drive, you can click for both of them & click on search button

*.tmp (application temporary files; delete any more than 1 day old) donât delete ones that have to do with your printer this will mess up the settings for your printer. The .tmp files for your printer will show the brand name for your printer.

DONâT FORGET to clear out RECYCLE BIN!

ALSO SCAN &/or UPDATE FOLLOWING:

Ad-aware, SpywareWindows Updates

Anti-Virus Program& any other pertinent updates or scans

DISK CHECK
Click on Start button at bottom of screen, go to My Computer, local disk (C:) â right click & go to Properties, Tools Tab, Error checking â check now, Click both boxes to have check marks. Start, yes, and the next time you turn on the computer, it checks and fixes bad sectors. If you want to go ahead & do this, you can restart your computer and it will begin this process. This process can take a while to do depending on what needs to be fixed; thatâs why it should be done last. It can take anywhere from 5 minutes to 2 hours; time will vary depending on the amount of errors on your hard drive & operating system. When itâs done it will go back to the log in screen if you have a password (which is strongly recommended). If you donât have a password, it will go back to the desktop.

Once a month, If you have a desktop computer, open the tower to your computer and get a can of air and spray out the dust. This especially needs to be done if you have indoor pets. One cannot imagine how much pet hair collects in the tower.

We are going to get some snow in our area?

Peter S

I live in Maryland and there is about a 100 percent chance of snow in our area for tomorrow. We were going to have a Christmas party tomorrow, but postponed it until New Year's Day because of the snow. Is there anything we should do to prepare for it? We might get at least five inches.
Now they are saying we might get up to 2 feet :D

Answer
Begin by filling your cars with gasoline. This may save your life if you're in your car and end up stuck in the snow. Over the years, many drivers have frozen to death in a cold car that's stuck in the snow.

Step 2Keep a blanket, water, food, a little bit of sand and shovel in your car at all times. This will come in handy if you get stuck in the snow. Even if you can't dig yourself out, the blanket, food and water will sustain you until help arrives.

Step 3Charge the cell phone. You may lose home phone service during a snow storm and you'll need your cell phone battery charged to call for help in the event of an emergency. And remember, portable phones are useless without power! So dig out the hard line phone just in case.

Step 4Get gas for the snowblower and emergency generators. A snowblower is useless without gasoline. And you can't drive to the gas station to get more before you snowblow the driveway! This is another benefit of gasing up the cars - if absolutely necessary, you can siphon the gas from your car's gas tank to power an emergency generator or snowblower.

Step 5Go food shopping. Get plenty of non-perishable, ready-to-eat food. And remember the manual can opener! If you don't have a gas stove, you won't have any means to cook and if the power is out, your refrigerator will be useless (though you can always fill a cooler, bathtub or clean trash can with snow to keep at least some of the perishables cold to prevent spoiling).

Step 6Store water. You'll want one gallon of water per each person per day. Keep a four-day supply of water on-hand. And don't forget the pets! The dog, cat and other pets will need water too.

Step 7Get plenty of firewood! You'll need dry firewood as a heat source in the event that you loose power during the snow storm. Some winter storms - ice storms especially - can result in power outages that last days, sometimes more than a week!

Step 8Find the snow shovel! Dig out the snow shovel and keep it handy. To make snow shoveling a bit easier during a large storm, make a trip outside every 3 to 4 hours to shovel. For most people, it's easier to shovel a couple inches of snow on 2 or 3 outings vs. shoveling a foot of snow all at once.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8475063&type=product&id=1185271084002
This one is also good and reliable with 500GB, but uses an AC Adapter Power Source, it is cheaper though $95

This one has a faster data transfer rate and is a little smaller than both above, however it is $130

What is the difference between an external hard drive and a portable hard drive?

quothe_the

I need a hard drive to save all my downloads for iTunes on so that I don't use up the computer space. I found an 500gb external hard drive for about 80$, and 160gb portable hard drive for about 110$. What's the difference between an external and portable, because it sounds like the same concept to me.

Answer
they are the exact same but some people don't know the right word
but portable hard drives are pocket sizes kinda like a flash drive but a bit bigger and external hard drive is more of an at home one you plug into the wall. id go with the external 500gb for 80 rather than 160 for 110 500 is allot more and more useful my opinion.

My iTunes folder is getting too big for my laptop's internal hard drive, so I bought an external hard drive (a WD My Book Elite - 1 TB). I'm thinking of going into My Computer and moving (NOT copying) my iTunes folder to the external hard drive. Will my iTunes still work that way? I don't want to lose my music.

Answer
There is a good video tutorial here:

http://lifehacker.com/5261172/move-your-itunes-library-to-an-external-hard-drive

It explains how you can use iTunes to copy the files so you will have the correct library locations. Once you have copied them correctly you can delete them from your laptop.

What will happen if I upgrade from Vista Basic to Vista Ultimate?

I am planning to upgrade to vista ultimate to take advantage of the windows media center. Is there any way to get the media center without the upgrade and will my external hard drive need to be reformatted causing me to lose everything once i upgrade???? Any help will be much appreciated. My computer is a Toshiba Tecra A6 with an Intel Duo Processor 1.83 GHz 1022 Mb RAM and a 32 bit operating system. Thanks for your help

Answer
Hey Zack-
The only way to get Windows Media Center is through Vista Home Pemium or Vista Ultimate- it is not available as a stand-alone download. Here is an article outlining some of the cool features you can take advantage of with Windows Media Center: http://lifehacker.com/software/hack-attack/turn-your-windows-pc-into-a-media-center-powerhouse-on-the-cheap-298408.php

Be sure to backup your data so that in the infrequent case something does go wrong you will still have your data available.

I was thinking of installing a large CS4 on a portable hard drive is this possible.

Answer
No, the external hard drives are hard drives, not flash drives.
Hard drives use magnets and stuff to store data, flash drives use circuit components, not moving parts, and tend to be faster.

Yes, you can install CS4 onto the drive (if it's big enough), but it will run kinda slowly compared to your local hard drive, since it's running through the USB cable.

Hope this answers your question.
Good luck!

How do I move my iTunes library from one computer to another?

Jorge

I know this has been asked before, but I can't the information I need.

I have about 1000 songs, about 200 videos (mostly podcasts) a single game, and 300 photos in my iTuned library. Some of them were imported from a CD, so they're in the iTunes folder (which is in "my music) but the others are scattered all over the place.

I've tried the "consolidate my library" option, but I got a "filename is too long or invalid" message, and I have no idea what that means.

So my problem is this... I want to just copy my iTunes music folder onto a large portable hard drive and bring it to my other computer, (which has iTunes installed) and import the whole thing.

But then I don't know how to get all of my songs into one place, where my podcasts are kept, and how to keep all of the info about the songs. (album art, skip count, etc.)

Isn't there some way I could just sync my ipod with my new itunes library instead of the other way around?
I don't have a CD burner, so that option is out.

If I go into the media files on my ipod and import those, will they keep all the information such as titles, skip count, album art, etc?

Answer
What you can do is burn your library to a disk. You click on file and back up to disk. Then it will burn a couple of disks which you import into your new library.

Why are External Hard Drives cheaper than Internal Hard Drives now?

7200 rpm portable hard drive on Samsung Spinpoint M8 Hard Drive Notebook Capacity 1TB Latest ...
7200 rpm portable hard drive image

C L

I have seen several 1TB external hard drives with 7200 rpm for under $80 whereas a comparable internal hard drive is well over $100-$200. Usually the reasoning is the rpm is so low (normally around 5400), but that doesn't seem to be the case. You can always just take the HDD out of the external casing and use it as internal, just wondering why the disparity? It used the be the other way around.

Answer
it's about inventory.

There was a large buildup of inventory fairly early on of portable drives so
when the flooding in thailand happened it affected the prices of all drives,
but as there was a larger inventory of portables when the speculators started jacking up prices.

Still 2/3-3/4 of the price increases were simply gouging.

Nothing more, nothing less.

What kind of Mac computer should i use for lots of photoshop?

Tim

Hi, I am looking for a new mac computer for work. There it is connected to a big server and I want to use it a lot for photoshop, illustrator and indesign.
What I all ready found:

iMac 27 inch
3.4 GHz quad core Intel i7
RAM 16GB 1600 MHz DDR3 (Maybe with 32GB?)
Fusion drive 1 TB (128 Flash memory + 872 HDD)
Nvidia GeForce GTX 675MX 1 GB DDR5

and

Mac Pro
Two 2.40GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon
12GB DDR3
1TB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s hard drive
ATI Radeon HD 5770 1GB

Wich one should you suggest? Or maybe you have other suggestions?

Thanks
(Mac Pro is the desktop computer from apple, not to be confused with the Macbook Pro)

Answer
well if your are not bothered about being portable then i would go for the imac. the mac pro may be easily upgraded but it has not been updated in years and i now far less powerful than the imac. you could maybe even consider a mac mini as these may be the cheapest mac on the market but they would still be pretty good for photoshop. whatever you get make sure that you pay for all the extras so that it is at the highest possible spec. in the long run it will make a big difference.

Does anyone know how to get your external hard drive to be compatible with the PS3?

joie_333

I have a USB external hard drive with mp3s and jpegs and I cant get it to work with my PS3 USB port.

Thanks!

Answer
Follow these steps exactly,
http://www.wikihow.com/Add-an-External-Hard-Drive-to-a-Playstation-3

At Step 2, it talks about NTFS. If your drive is NTFS, you will probably want to copy all of your songs and pictures to your PC before deleting the partition. That will erase everything.
If your drive is already FAT32, skip to Step 7. You just need to add the appropriate folders to make the PS3 automatically add them to the XMB. If you don't have those folders, they won't show up but you should still be able to hit triangle and 'select all' to see the files.

If you do need to reformat, I would actually recommend fat32format ,
http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/index.htm?fat32format.htm

I've used it. It's very fast and easy.

portable hard drives 3tb image

WoodyS

I am told I need a fast hard drive for a particular application on my Windows 7 machine. 7200 RPM is suggested. Does anyone make a fast USB 7200 RPM hard drive?

Answer
Virtually all 3,5ich hard drives for desktop systems are 7200RPM. The fastest consumer "internal" desktop models use 10000RPM. "Raptors"

Laptops either use slower 5400RPM 2.5 inch disks or some now have 7200RPM also.

Some USB external drives are 7200RPM and some [particularly portable external drives for laptops with no external power supply] are 5400RPM. It is always clearly marked on the packaging.

The WesternDigital MyBook series are all 7200RPM and are very good performance and good value too. Plenty of different sizes [500GB up to 3TB] and both USB 2 and faster USB 3 models if your system supports USB 3. See here: http://www.wdc.com/en/products/external/desktop/

why wont my old HDD show up in windows 7?

Brandon E

I have a home built PC. It's ran great for years. Every now and again I would just upgrade HDDs whenever my current one began to fill. Recently I have been running on a 1.5TB Seagate Barracuda of which my girlfriend filled to capacity (professional Photography). Before I could afford the new drive I purchased (a 3TB Seagate drive), She caused my version of windows 7 to crash.

So I figured ok it'll be as easy as installing windows on my new drive and extracting all of the old files onto my new drive. Installed windows and then booted up. went to my computer and the 1.5TB doesnt show. Odd seeing as it has appeared in the bios. Most topics on this refer to the extra drive as being new and tells everyone to format the new drive with a partition. not an option for me.

I am currently in the process of attempting to repair the old windows 7 startup with no luck. Currently when trying to boot windows 7 on the old drive it continues past the post and then displays only a flashing underscore "_". not exactly helpful.

Additional details:
No other Hardware Changes had been made prior to the system crash. I had upgraded system components a few months earlier with no issues.

I have also attempted changing SATA cables with working ones and no changes.

I also changed to other known working hard drives. another 1TB drive, no luck. a 250GB drive from a portable hard drive enclosure(extracted and inserted internally like the other drives in same conditions) this hard drive showed up correctly.

My attempt to correct this situation is becoming increasingly frustrating, and it doesnt help that I have legos on my desk to play with... If anyone has any helpful insight I would appreciate it greatly!
*Further working on the system seems to have revealed my hard disk has died. It showed up a few times in bios however I cannot replicate the result anymore. It seems I may need to turn towards recovery services for this one...

Answer
If none of these suggestions in this link work I would suggest running a hard drive health tester.
Every hard drive maker has one on their website or try Seagate. THey have one that you can run from windows or a bootable cd/usb.
Good luck

Answer
The best option would be to back up your data to an External Hard Drive and carry out a clean installation.

I thoroughly recommend Linux Mint 9 LTS which is built upon Ubuntu 10.04 LTS its easy to install and easy to use plus it comes with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled

You download the ISO. image of Linux Mint 9 LTS then you need to create a Bootable LiveCD for installation

What's the difference between a Desktop External Hard Drive and a External Portable Hard Drive?

What's the best kind of portable hard drive to back up my computer with?

Zombie Pim

I don't really know much about portable hard drives, but I'd really like one to back up my photos and itunes library, instead of burning cds...

What brand/size portable hard drive would you recommend?

Thanks!

Answer
1. One you can afford to buy.

2. One that has enough room for all your stuff.

That's basically it. They're pretty much the same otherwise.

Who makes a good portable hard drive for a computer?

Bleacher K

I recently had rain checked a "Western Digital 120gb 2.5" Passport Portable" hard drive from Best Buy. I got on the internet and read some user reviews and found them to be quite horrible though. I want one that can handle both laptops and desktops and that will last for a long time and is quite durable. I do not have a lot of knowledge on portable HDD's Any help will be very appreciated. Thank you.

Answer
I have found that the big names work best, ie. Seagate, Western Digital etc. However, if you are looking for a good deal and a site that generally has reviews by mostly informed consumers, try buy.com. Here is a link to some results that you may find to optimal:

For example this hard drive is 250GB, for 79 dollars and has 38 reviews to read, most of them are great:

How can I access an external hard drive on an outside network (my parents house)?

locochriz1

I would like to access the music I have saved on their western digital external harddrive. The hard drive is network accessible from their house but I have moved out and need to know how I can access from my own house.

Answer
You could make it a virtual server on their router, but that is not very secure. you could use go to my pc on a pc on their network, you could install vpn capable routers at both locations and connect the two networks (make sure they have different addresses they cannot both be 192.168.1.0 255.255.255.0)

keep in mind when you are pulling music from their network, that a dsl link has relatively slow upload speeds.

I have the Mac OS X 10.7.3
2.3 GHz Intel Core i5

I am planning to get a portable external hard drive within the $200 budget mainly for video editting on Final Cut Pro and After effects and for storage.

I am so confused with fireware and 3.0
3.0 seems to be a good thing but will my macbook be compatible with it or will it function as a 2.0?

Please recommend me with the products with links. Thanks!

Answer
Final point is that Firewire 800 has wider bandwidth than USB. Also, USB never performs in real life situations equal to the spec.

Your computer (if it shows "MacBookPro8,1" for the Machine ID) is Early 2011, so it is USB 2.0. You cannot connect any USB 3.0 device to that. Your fastest option no matter what we think about USB 3.0 is still Firewire 800.... or Thunderbolt.

I also suggest an aluminum case for better heat dissipation. See links below.

Is my External Hard Drive Compatible with my Mac Book Pro?

Bella

I ambushing a Mac Book Pro but I have a Samsung G2 Portable External Hard Drive. Would it be compatible with my new laptop.

Answer
Hi there!

The skinny on your drive is this: Yes, the drive will work as an external hard drive and you can store files on it like any other drive; however, the Included backup and password protection software that coms with your drive doesn't support Mac OS.

Therefore, if you want to backup your Macintosh to this particular drive you'll have to reformat the drive to Mac's Extended Journaled format so that Time Machine (Mac OSX native) will recognize the drive: your drive is originally configured for Windows and, for one reason or another, Time Machine canât reformat the drive automatically, so you have to format it yourself first.

Also, if Time Machine is not your thing, here is a list of alternatives to the Macintosh's backup program: http://www.icreatemagazine.com/general/top-5/top-5-alternatives-to-time-machine/

Hope this answers your question.
