How do I use ipod hard drive without the ipod?

Don't make a decision based solely on the company. List out what you want the system to do. Traditionally, there is no better media-oriented machine on the market than a Mac. Nobody can beat it, but the price is consistently much higher than 2nd tier systems by Dell, HP, Sony, Toshiba, and others.

I have always had good experiences with Dell. I find their product to be priced very competitively, and the systems have never given me trouble that wasn't easily handled by customer service. I had a bad hard drive in a laptop, and they replaced it quickly without a whole lot of fuss. However, getting through to someone on their customer service line took FOREVER. Unfortunately, this is the case for most computer manufacturers, so I don't think the company name makes a huge difference there.

Two good resources are www.pcmag.com and www.cnet.com. Both offer comprehensive reviews of the systems available on the market, and will even stratify by user-base so you can restrict the systems to those in your desired usability preference. You don't want a bunch of $7000 high end gaming system reviews if what you're really looking for is a $700 to $1000 dollar system for school/office work at home.

A great option that has really solidified in recent years is the laptop segment. At a very competitive price, most laptops are nearly as powerful as competitive desktop models, but come packaged with wi-fi functionality, and they are portable. This is huge if you're a student. My laptop was a critical factor in grad school ... I wrote my entire master's thesis on it. Very good investment.

I have a macbook pro 13 inch that I'm running a minecraft server on for my friend, brothers, and I, how can I speed up the server ans play the game on my laptop? I have a 1TB external hard drive that I was wondering if I could put my server files on and run as a live disc that would give me more computing power. You're overloading your system. Your system is trying to handle the server computations, your own game and the server-client interactions of four or more people. Offloading your server files to an external disk will probably only hurt your system because you aren't taking the files off your system. Your computer still has to run them, but instead of being on the 5400 RPM hard drive (unless you swapped it or upgraded it) running on your SATA II (or SATA III, doesn't matter, your hard drive is maxing out around 80MB/s regardless) you put it on USB 2.0 (Unless you JUST bought this MacBook Pro, you only have USB 2.0. Even if you have USB 3, remember the bottleneck still isn't your cable, it's your drive. Spinning media is slower than flash media every time.) and you cap your hard drive around 45MB/s. Plus, your computer still has to run those files, but now it can't access them nearly as fast. You don't fix your issue, you just exacerbate it. There's nothing you can do, code-wise, to make your computer faster. Your options are as follows, you can buy a new computer (because with a laptop you can't make many changes) or you can upgrade what two parts Apple will let you touch to make a few marginal speed improvements. Buying a new computer is clearly off the table since the laptop you just bought set you back right around a grand (fair enough, I have a 15" MacBook Pro and it's a great piece, just not as gaming oriented as my desktop).

First things first, you want to upgrade your RAM. You probably have 4GB tops, so we'll max it out. 16GB is the magic number across two sticks for 8GB a piece. Now, because I don't know exactly what model 13" MacBook you have, I'm going to go based on my own which is a late-2011 model. So 16GB is what you are looking for.

That's memory I bought for my own computer. It works great and it does as advertised. Now, let me make something VERY clear. Increasing your RAM DOES NOT increase your computer's speed. It increases your computer's ability to multi-task meaning you can run more programs before you max out your computers physical memory and start to see a slow-down in overall performance. Your computer can spread CPU power a little thinner because programs can store more in the physical memory. Clearly, for the amount of multi-tasking you are doing, this is a good thing. Your only other real viable option for improvement is to upgrade your hard drive to a solid-state drive. Even then, an SSD only increases performance marginally. Access to programs is faster, rendering video would be faster and it will make your computer just run, overall, a touch faster because you are doubling or tripling access times to your drive. Let me put it this way. The Seagate drive in your computer right now will average around 80MB/s Read and about 50MB/s write. It's just slow because most people don't need wicked fast drives in order to surf the web, type essays or run Photoshop. I need a lightning quick drive because I'm rendering full HD video in real time and I need to be able to write as quick as I can read. The solid-state drive I purchased increased my read times to around 200MB/s and my write times to around 150MB/s. Double my read, triple my write. I can load Premiere Pro in half the time on my laptop because it's just quicker on the draw. The program runs worse because the CPU/GPU combo isn't as strong, but that's how it works.

Those are your only two real options for making a difference on your laptop. I'm not going to link you to the drive I bought because it cut my hard drive in half and I bought one for performance. SSD's aren't cheap. A 256GB SSD can run you anywhere from $150 to $300. Unfortunately, this is the only real route you can take. Aside from spending close a grand on some Thunderbolt external drives, you can't really do a whole lot because you don't have much space inside the computer. At the end of the day you are dealing with a laptop, and not just any laptop, but an Apple laptop. Those are the only two parts you can touch without voiding your warranty (technically, but let's see some techs argue that the upgrades I've done weren't for the good of the machine) and it's the only real way to make a performance difference. I wish you luck, but unless you offload either the server or the game onto another dedicated machine, you are pretty much SOL.

How to improve my graphics for Guild Wars 2 on a Mac?

Hello, I'm using a 15-inch late 2011 Macbook Pro, and I want to play Guild Wars 2 on it. However, I'm having a really difficult time here. I am one who wants my games to look pretty, and unfortunately, GW2 is an extremely demanding game. Does anyone know what I could do that might help me run it on the higher, or possibly even the highest graphics settings?

Please note that I know next to nothing about computers. But I have heard that an external hard drive or an external graphics card may help. I've also tried cleaning out my computer. The only thing installed on it now is Word and Powerpoint, iTunes, and Guild Wars 2. But, still, I have a tremendously difficult time with the game. Any thoughts? Thanks!
Yes, I'm running the Mac beta, that's all that they have available for download as far as I know. I just did a big cleanup though and got rid of GarageBand and all the stuff from my iTunes that I never listen to, so that should help some, especially since GarageBand took up a TON of space. Hopefully this'll go well!

When I played WoW I was able to play it to almost completely maxed out settings- everything on high with the view distance, environment detail, and liquid detail on ultra, and it ran perfectly. Hopefully I'll get good results with GW2 now.

Are you running the Mac beta version? According to their system requirements it should run well on your MacBook but as it is a beta version you should raise any problems you find directly with the producers of the game.

1)it'll probably work on your computer since the minimum requirement for the processor is 500mhz and yours is 1.6 ghz.
2)The windows would be what windows os it works on. The Pentium lll and 500mhz is the minimum processor requirement. 500mhz is how fast the processor is running at. RAM is Random access memory. It's what makes your computer go faster.
3)Go to the start menu and in the search bar at the bottom, type in system information. Click on the first one that pops up and scroll down until you see total physical memory and available physical memory. That is your RAM.

It does just what the name says... it's an external hard drive. It's a separate piece of hardware from your main hard drive and therefore it will not combine space. You can run games and programs off of it, but it will just provide extra side storage. Think of it like a new, separate hard drive.

well if your are not bothered about being portable then i would go for the imac. the mac pro may be easily upgraded but it has not been updated in years and i now far less powerful than the imac. you could maybe even consider a mac mini as these may be the cheapest mac on the market but they would still be pretty good for photoshop. whatever you get make sure that you pay for all the extras so that it is at the highest possible spec. in the long run it will make a big difference.

Go Firewire. It will have at least twice the data throughput rate as the USB 2.0 drive. RPM has little effect on external drives, as the data interface (USB or Firewire) is almost always the limiting factor.

Yes, you can use a portable hard drive with an XBOX 360, but BEWARE! It won't work the same. There are some disadvantages of choosing this method for storing data.

+ You can use the entire hard drive for files you add on your PC or Mac like movies etc...
- You can only use up to 16 GB space for XBOX 360 Storage. (for games, saves etc etc) on an external (portable) hard drive.


I think you should get an internal hard drive, which is has no limitations for the XBOX 360 storage (the whole HDD is for XBOX 360).
You can only use a geniue Microsoft hard drive specifically designed for XBOX 360 Slim.

(it's hard to make hard drives for older XBOX 360s work and it's impossible to use a regular 2,5" SATA hard drive that are for PCs. Even thought it has a 2,5" SATA bay, it WONT accept a regular HDD, it spins it but it doesn't show up no matter how I format it. It needs a specific firmware, which is only present on Microsoft's HDD for XBOX 360)
So it's a much easier way to just get the official 250 GB HDD. It also has a special enclosure which makes it sliding it perfectly and fits it tight.
So basically it's just a slide-in thing.


So I would suggest you getting the Microsoft 250 GB Hard drive for XBOX 360 Slim. That's what I will do; I also have an XBOX 360 Slim 4 GB. (w/o Kinect)

A laptop is meant to be portable and a PC is meant to be powerful. While I have a laptop that I can use for editing photos(17.3" screen, 2.2GHz quad core CPU), I would not even try editing a video with it. Plus, as already stated, there is not a lot you can upgrade on a laptop.

My rule of thumb is...if your computer can't run BlackOps or GTA4 in high res/full detail without lags/bogging/glitches, then you will have issues editing a video.

I had some minor issues with my PC and wound up putting about $550 of upgrades in it ($250 video card, $125 sound card, $100 high speed RAM to go from 4Gb to 8Gb, and a 500watt powersupply for the video card). The system screams now...what used to take 1+hours to compile a video, now takes about 15-20minutes. (PLUS the games look sooo much better)

Logic Pro 9 comes with huge collections of libraries, which means program itself isn't that big; around 1 GB or less.

Other than that you can pretty much install on an external drive if you have any.
If you still don't own please make sure you buy one with:

SATA or eSata port - if your Mac supports those connection or you have enough money to get PCI cards for the port. Second choice would be Firewire 800 then USB2. and it also depends on what kind of audio interface you are using.

7200RPM or more; no 5400RPM
which means 2.5 is not recommended - it limits number of the samples you can play simultaneously.
but if you think you won't max out the spec you can go for it.

I'm not sure if you can turn a old hard drive into a portable one for your computer, but there is another option. You can buy a Xbox 360 USB hard drive. This is pretty much your only option unless you are VERY tech savvy (s-a-v-v-y) and you can re- arrange the components so that you can use it as a computer hard drive. So yeah.
The Xbox 360 flash drive is available with 8GB memory for ~$30.
You can get the 16GB version for ~$55.

The misconception of the term CPU aside, a couple of pointers that hopefully will help you make the right decision:

3. Stay away from Dell, Packard Bell and Fujitsu. These brands offer computers for very attractive prices, but the quality / price ratio is not good. Do yourself a favor, and go for a brand like Lenovo, HP, or Acer.
If you doubt this point, just take a look at yahoo answers, and see how many problems are related to Dell computers in comparison to the other three.

Ok, so I am going on a holiday but I can't bring my computer, however I will have access to a computer there but I am not allowed to install anything on it (and no I cant install and then erase when I go back). So I was thinking to install programs I need on my external hard drive (1 terabyte), but idk if that is possible..I know it would prolly work much much slower...idk...is it possible at all?

P.S. and no it can't wait till I get back...I got work to do and it just can't wait.

well that's a reality that you really can't install any software on external hard drive without any processor or ram
but your problem can be solved my a mean .I really don't have any idea about which kind of software do you use on your pc but if you use simple audio video ,office ,photo picture editing software you can take them all you had to do is to download the PORTABLE version of them mostly software companies provide these version of software
download it (extract if needed to be ) after this keep the setup folder in your hard disk and now if you open the setup folder you find a program file of your software also you can keep offline installer or updates if needed .
for example i use handbrake but if i don't want it to install on my pc i can download a portable version from site now i can access it any where any time only i had to keep the setup file

hence problem solved (no need of installing software just use them with a click )

I am looking to buy an external hard drive. I have a few questions. What should I get? It seems that every review I read on amazon people complain about connectivity problems and also the system dying. Some people say some are loader than there computers. I would like something above 500 GB. I have a computer that is windows xp and I ordered a computer with windows 7. I also need to make sure the drive will function with both so i can transfer itunes to the new computer.

There are not any Thunderbolt external drives available yet. My rule of thumb is to wait at least 6 months when new tech comes out. This gives peripheral manufacturers time to gear up and the competition lowers prices. La Cie announced they will have a dual SSD Thunderbolt drive available this summer, I bet it goes for at least $1,000. At the moment, the Thunderbolt port doesn't really accomplish much besides shrink your wallet with no devices yet available. I'll consider a new MBP in September.

I have found nearly no limit online for encrypting my portable hard drives, USB flash drives, laptops, and desktops. Even cell phones, including those running Android with versions as old as 2.3 (Gingerbread). Strangely absent from the list, the Kindle Fire. Has anyone found a quick, fairly simple way to encrypt the entirety of my Kindle Fire (personal data, apps, settings, etc)? I do almost all of my work "in the cloud," so formatting is no problem for me. Any advice is welcome, good advice is deeply appreciated :-]

The Kindle Fire is a nice tablet and has every function I could ever need EXCEPT one; there is no slot for extra memory. Although the Kindle Fire has an Amazon Cloud service, it will only work for Amazon content, and you can't connect unless you have Wifi.
However, upon reading, I noted that the Fire has a microUSB port that allows it to connect to a computer. Through this connection, you can load user-generated files such as apps, movies, music and more. When I thought about it, I noticed that this essentially turns your computer into extra memory space.

My question is this; is there any sort of hard drive or other portable memory device that connects to microUSB? And if there is, could it be used as extra memory for the Fire?

Hi, Marshall, you cannot attach any extra devices to USB port on Kindle Fire. Looking at the tablets people always confuse memory (RAM) of the device that helps it operate quicker and smoother by loading apps and web pages into memory and content space that is used for storing apps, videos, files, etc. Neither of those "memories" can be extra added to Kindle Fire as RAM is not expandable on tablets while content space needs microSD slot to be expanded and it's not present on Kindle Fire.
I'd recommend you to take a look at the new Nook Tablet that had been getting rave pro reviews on the web and it is the best device in it's class - much better than Kindle Fire. It's got Netflix, Hulu, Pandora, Angry Brids, etc., the best battery life, the best screen, double the RAM and space for apps/photoes/movies, microSD slot and a microphone for Skype, and much zippier performance during video playback and apps usage than choppy/laggy act of Kindle Fire according to many user reviews. Also, many Kindle Fire units have faulty Wi-Fi and people have a lot of issues connecting to internet according to many user reviews. Amazon's own web site has hundreds of reviews of Kindle Fire's new owners that gave it 1 or 2 star reviews because of choppy/laggy experience they got from this underpowered device.

It cost me £1050 or $1700, I was looking at hp's and stuff and they where like £1800 way way more expensive

I suggest that you give dell a call, on the phone they give you discounts and stuff if you ask. I also must state the jbl speakers and subwoofer are a dream for when playing games and stuff and the screen is awsome (the bightness is best set to 50% hurts your eyes it really is bright). Oh and its made from alliminium which looks brill but is fantastic because its not a fingerprint magnet.

Oh and I can run call of duty bo at high settings, batman aa at very high settings, command and conquer 4 at very high. Most games can run a max settings some you have to turn off say one feature from max to very high then the game is smooth. Its a really good laptop XD. Also dont forget this is at 1080p not 720p which most new laptops have nowdays.

The touchpad is also massive and very nice to use and has seperate right and left click buttons (i know some dont) which are nice to use.

Also the laptop is portable, i use it for taking to uni and things.

I'd go with the cheapest one, unless having the larger screen is really important to you. I have a larger pro laptop and it's heavy. Spending $1000 more for a screen that is only a bit larger seems too costly. As the the difference in hard drive size, you can buy a portable terabyte external drive for about $100 and can use it for backups or extra storage as needed.

You may have to press triangle more then once depending on the hard drives file structure

Simply take a jump drive, external hard drive, etcâ¦hook it up to the USB port on the front and then you--

Goto to view under music, or video, or photos, scroll down to the drive you've hooked up hover over it then push Triangle(notX) then select display all (view all)(press X) and it will show everything on the jump drive or external harddrive. Then either listen to or view the music, video, photos or copy to the ps3 hard drive directly.

If you have a psp you can also use that to move files from pc to ps3.

depends on the drive . you can use a pc to reformat it if necessary or most can be formatted using the ps3 - just go to system settings , format utility and find it . be careful you don't accidentally format the ps3 instead
you can ask specifically for a fat32 format drive before purchase or just plug into the ps3 to see if it shows up - if you can , first plug into your pc and check it's specs , copy something to it ( like an mp3 file , put it in a folder called MUSIC ) and see if the drive shows on your xmb under the music section
most drives that directly plug into a usb port without an external power supply are now fat32 but ask before buying and make sure they will show you on the package or manual where it says it is , don't just trust the employee
