How to use an external hard drive as extra storage on a PC?

Is there any way to use my 500 GB external hard drive as extra storage on my computer? It has very little memory left (20 GB) and that was after the OS installation. Mind, it's about 6 years old. I just put in 2 GB of RAM but have no idea how to install storage-wise memory.

ur question is not clear. external hard drives are used by usb plug. don't u have a usb plug connected to that hard disk?

I need a little more storage for my computer for programs. will an external hard drive add more storage on my computer? i was looking at Toshiba 250GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive and Western Digital 250GB My Passport Essential Hard Drive, will any of these help me out?

It does just what the name says... it's an external hard drive. It's a separate piece of hardware from your main hard drive and therefore it will not combine space. You can run games and programs off of it, but it will just provide extra side storage. Think of it like a new, separate hard drive.
