I'm looking for a portable external hard drive for storing pictures and movies. I was looking at the Western Digital Passport Essential 500GB. I've read some reviews that some hard drives are not good for storing movies. Is this a good choice? If not what is?

Answer
well some one i know has been using a western digital external hard disk drive for quite some time and he has had no problems with it...
i have also used that external hard disk and the movies stored on it and the songs work just as the same as the internal hard disk...
just be sure to look for the rpm ie rotations per second of the disk so that a higher rpm disk is much better
hope that answers the question
take care...

What is the best size external hard drive and brand to buy for the Wii?

M Brightsi

I bought a black Wii that already had an SD card in it and has been modded. I am wondering what the best brand and size external hard drive to buy?

Answer
I use a 2TB Western Digital My Book USB 2.0,
I've set up other My Books, 500GB & 1TB, for friends.
If you run the latest d2x cios versions (v8 final or v9 beta) they can support larger than 2TB. (Think support started in v6 but other things fixed in later versions)

http://wiki.gbatemp.net/wiki/USB_Devices_Compatibility_List
Has a list of drives/enclosures that have been tested. WD and Seagate seem most popular for the larger drives. I use a couple of San Disk Cruzers for a single/couple of games, comes in handy for portability so I don't have to carry another power supply.

Isabella

I dropped my ipod touch on its face and it cracked in the corner and thru the lower half of the screen and i will be in soo much trouble if my parents find out. is there any way to make it less noticeable?? i really need the help!

Answer
Origin of Ipod: The iPod is a line of portable media players designed and marketed by Apple Inc. The first line was released on November 10, 2001; its most recent redesigns were announced on September 12, 2012. There are four current generations of the iPod: the ultra-compact iPod shuffle, the compact iPod nano, the touchscreen iPod touch, and the hard drive-based iPod classic. Like other digital music players, iPods can serve as external data storage devices. Storage capacity varies by model, ranging from 2 GB for the iPod shuffle to 160 GB for the iPod classic. The devices are controlled by the Samsung ARM and the Apple A4 CPUs.

Which one is better: the macbook pro or the mac air?

elocine

I'm talking about the 2012 versions that were released just last week. Which one would you recommend?

Answer
It does not matter what our preference is. It matters what your preference is. Everyone has different needs. Basically the Pro is more powerful, longer battery life, bigger hard drive, bigger screen, more ports and the Air is just stripped down to make it portable.

How much do you value portability? If not a lot, go with the Pro.

I would like for is to have;
-a webcam
-an inexpensive price.
-microsoft (I don't want any Apple computers)
-nothing huge, but not too tiny

I tried looking for one online, but I really didn't know where to start looking. Maybe you are better at this than I am? Thank you!
Oh, and decent computing power. It doesn't need to have a huge amount of memory; just enough to save school papers on and do projects. I don't plan on downloading any games, but I do want to be able to Skype and what not.

Answer
Core i-3, better than Core 2 Duo
Core i-5, better than Core i-3 in interactive social networking & creating home videos
Core i-7, better than Core i-5 in designing your own website

You don't care about the video card w/c fits your budget just fine. If a laptop has a dedicated video card, the price goes up (this is indicated by A LOGO STICKER for NVIDIA or ATI MOBILITY RADEON on the computer surface is just below the keyboard. But if you can find a good deal with at least 256MB dedicated video card, it will be better for watching your DVDs.
You have to make sure that the laptop has AT LEAST 2GB DDR2 RAM modules in it so that it will always ran smoothly and not freeze up on you (HIGHER IS BETTER; DDR3 & DDR5 are faster & newer types of memory modules that came out).
But what makes a computer really run fast? It is it's processor! So if you really want your processor to have computing prowess & you're able to run different applications simultaneously, make sure it's AS EFFICIENT AS an Intel Core 2 Duo Processor (Centrino 2 is a Core 2 Duo featuring power saving capabilities; Quad Core is for gaming fanatics). A Core 2 Duo is like having 2 motors running the computer each independent of the other w/c means for a Quad Core, it's like 4 motors are running the machine (that means it will run faster & more efficient even if its frequency is lower to that of a Core 2 Duo). Intel: Core 2 Duo, Centrino 2, Quad Core, Core i-3, Core i-5 & Core i-7 are all very much faster & better than an Intel: DUAL CORE, PENTIUM, CELERON, ATOM & their more affordable AMD counterparts.
In your case, get one with a Core 2 Duo and not a Pentium, Celeron or Atom if you can. Just make sure you have AT LEAST 2GHz of speed on your processor so that will be able to appreciate your laptop's fast response and performance.
The HDD (Hard Disc Drive) should be at least 320GB.
For the battery life to last longer, you need more cells into it. So if you can get a Dell from www.Dell.com with the HIGHER CAPACITY 6 CELL BATTERY, do so. The ordinary one doesn't last long.
8 cells, 9 cells & 12 cell batteries means they can last longer.
The average laptop LCD screen size is 15.4", and since you want something smaller than that w/ these 3 features I just shed some light on, expect the price to go higher (ex. for 13.3" & 14.1" LCD screens).

For other ladies, looking for portable 14" laptops, try the Core i-5 Toshiba Satellite M645-S4050 or Satellite E205-S1980 from BestBuy, both comes with 512MB Class 3 NVIDIA GeForce 310M dedicated graphics card for a little bit of gaming like the SIMS 3.

FOR the best PRICEs, go to Fry's Electronics, MicroCenter, CostCo & BestBuy's web sites for updates & COMPARISON. There are a lot of options & different combinations if you want to customize your own laptop, just STICK TO THE ESSENTIALS first.
The MSI GT680R 15.6" Gaming Notebook I got w/ the Intel® Core⢠i-7 for playing my DesignCAD software and playing Diablo III, retails for $1,499.99 (+ tax & other sur-charges). I chose to pay more to have the newest technology so that I DON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT IT GETTING OUTDATED WITHIN THE NEXT 11 YRS.

One aspect to consider that produces heat is battery charging. Basically, as you charge up a battery, it heats up because current runs through it. Add that to the humidity and temperature of the location, it may feel even hotter than usual. FYI: I always tell my customers, a laptop's battery is similar to a cell phone's. You charge it when it's depleted & you unplug the adapter when it is already fully charge (this will prevent the battery from getting overcharged & extend the life of the battery). So for less hassle, I always advice my customers to just remove the battery if they plan to use the computer for long hours straight (more than 1 hour) and just run it on AC power alone so as not to overcharge it & shorten the battery life. That is if there is an available outlet for you to plug in your charger at Starbucks, if not, then you really need the battery.

Answer
Very easy. Connect the drive to a usb port on your computer and copy paste all your important files from your computer to the external hard drive. If I go in more detail then you will have to open or explore your external hard drive and once the target window is open, go to your files or folder on the source drive and copy all your content by selecting it. Then go to your target drive and paste it. These are really basic instructions. You can google step by step instructions for more help.

What is the best flash drive memory to use for backup.

my desktop is a 1GB and my laptop is a 3GB
I'm sorry I should have included the storage. I believe my desktop is 250 and my laptop is 300.

Answer
You should have at least a 250GB Portable Hard Drive to use for computer back up. You can get one at Best Buy or Target or Walmart for under 120 dollars.

I notice you said 1GB and 2GB that must be DDR2 Memory. Memory just increases the speed of your processor. Memory can be expensive. I Don't see why your laptop will need a Memory increase it's already pretty high.

How to enable my iPod as a portable hard drive without using iTunes?

portable hard drive questions on WD Nomad Rugged Case Lose your Files No More

jayztttigh

I basically want to do exactly what I said; enable my iPod to be a portable hard drive. I know that this can be done through iTunes.

Now my problem is this. I don't have iTunes, nor do I want that program. Every time I install it, it installs unnecessary stuff including quicktime, and other stuff I could go on forever about, and it is a pain to un-install.

So the question is, is there any easy way to enable my iPod to be a portable hard drive without having to install iTunes to do it ?

Answer
Go to My Computer and open the drive that has "Type" as "Removable disk."
You should be able to drag and drop files into it. Just don't drop anything into the folder called "Ipod_control"

How do I connect my portable hard drive to my Bravia TV?

annelu

I recently brought a 1TB WD Elements portable hard drive hoping to connect it to my Bravia TV and watch files such as avi. For some reason my TV doesn't seem to identify the device. But once I try multiple USBs it does. My friend recommended buying a blu-ray player. Is there another way around this, like having to alter my settings? Thanks in advance.

Answer
I know that a tv's USB 2.0 only supports a handful of video files. I know MP4's work, maybe avchd and h.264 (commonly used in cameras/camcorders). I know months ago I had tried .avi files on our tv's on the sales floor; samsung, sony, lg and had no luck.

As for not recognizing it,and i'm not sure how it's set up, it may not want to recognized a HDD USB device. It may only be flash drives or thumb-drives, whatever you want to call them. What I usually recommend is to get one of those WD TV boxes. Just plug in any USB device and itll recognize it.

http://reviews.cnet.com/portable-video-players-pvps/western-digital-wd-tv/4505-6499_7-33396690.html

# AVI , MKV , MOV , WMV , XviD , H.264 , MPEG-1 , MPEG-2 , MPEG-4
Those are the video file formats on that specific ones. They have newer nicer ones that do quite a bit more, have Web TV junk to stream through it. Some have 1080p support via HDMI, some don't, which affects the price.

I'd probably recommend a thumb drive with small avi file and plug it in, see if it even recognizes that file format. if it doesn't you'll have to convert it to a supported one.

Another question would be is what specific model you have. Not all usb models support video, some are just photos and music. Is your usb on the side or on the back with the other inputs? Generally, the back usb ports are for service updates only whereas the side ones are generally for media and/or servicing. If you toss us a model number we can give you a little more details, as for now I just kind of have to do a spread shot of different issues. Hope it helps.

What's the best external hard drive out there that will not lose any personal data whatsoever?

discoman

I'm running out of space on my pc and I need to know what's the best external hard drive that is portable, has lots of memory, cheap, will always work, and will not lose any personal data from the external hard drive. Some of the known external hard drives are like seagate free agent, transcend iomega, western digital, and lacie. If you know any RELIABLE known external hard drives, please write a well structured detail description of it. Thank you.

Answer
Check out the ioSafe Solo: http://www.iosafe.com/3

This external hard drive is virtually indestructible - it's fireproof, waterproof, and can be bolted down to prevent theft. Despite backup efforts, if you have a house fire or flood, you're pretty much hooped with a typical hard drive. With the ioSafe, in addition to its disaster-proof features, your data is safe. If something does happen to your hard drive, you can send it back to the company - at their expense - and they will attempt to recover your data and, if they can't, will spend up to $1000 for a third-party recovery service to do it. Once your data is recovered, ioSafe will send it back to you, along with a new hard drive.

I just got an ioSafe Solo and I love it. I'm extremely happy with the services and features this baby offers. :-)

Good luck!

CorpyChase

So I just got my Seagate usb 3.0 Go Flex Ultra Portable 1tb ext. hdd. I partition it as 750gb as NTFS and as the BACKUP while the remaining is a FAT32 for files like music and for my ps3 stuff. After that I tried copying files from my computer to the ext hdd, and I notice that it freezes time to time when it gets to a higher transfer rate (60-80mb/s) then it'll pause for a few seconds sometimes longer then the transfer rate goes down by 40mb/s and again goes up until it freezes again. Then i tried tranferring the same file to my FAT32 partition, and everything seems to be more consistent.. no pauses and whatsoever. I don't know what the deal is, and I'm actually really frustrated right now cuz I would not like to give it back to Seagate if it wasn't a Hdd failure or worst.

Then I reformatted it to a whole 1tb NTFS hdd, and I still get the same problem I have when I partitioned the hdd. Also I'm concerned why does my average transfer rate is around 55-60mb/s when it was said to be around 65-70mb/s? And yes I am connected to a ss 3.0 usb plug and also using the ss 3.0 connector that is included with the product.
My hdd is a Seageate Barracuda 1tb 7200rpm and has been defragged on Monday.
Like I said, I was transferring the same file to my FAT32 partition, it was consistent and no stop.
Also I have a regular ext. hard drive 5400rpm, Western digital case but a different hard drive and I tried copying the same file to that hdd and also had a constant rate.. no freeze/pauses.

Answer
It's trying to write files, faster than it can read the originals. Your main HD, may need to be defragged.

name some latest technologies used in computers?

Answer
1- Intel's Core Processor Line

Intel has struggled with its Pentium 4 architecture for years. AMD gained the performance advantage because of the long pipeline of the Pentium 4 restricting its performance and clock increases. Enter the new Core architecture. The new design is a radical departure from the Pentium 4 line and had more in common with the Pentium M. The new design provides amazing performance in a small die size that also has the added benefit of using less power and producing less heat than the older processors. This has allowed Intel to once again recapture its lead in the computer processor field.

2- Apple's Boot Camp
The computer industry is all about choices but for many that meant only running Microsoft Windows. Apple's Macintosh product line has been around for years, but consumers could have difficulty using it when their work or school might be using Windows. When Apple released the new Intel based Mac product lines, it was only a matter of time before they were made to run Windows. After that was broken, Apple released its Boot Camp beta to the public to make it easy to run both Windows and Mac OS X on any of the new Intel Macs. Now consumers have the option of using both operating systems from a single computer!

3) Perpendicular Hard Drives
Perpendicular does not refer to the orientation of the drive physically within the PC but to the orientation of the magnetic fields on the hard drive platters. This simple rotation of the magnetic fields allowed for a dramatic increase in the capacity of the hard drive sizes. While last year hard drives were topping out around 400GB in size, Seagate was able to introduce the new technology into its desktop drives and push 750GB into a single desktop drive. This technology is also benefiting notebook and portable electronics that use hard drives.

4) NVIDIA GeForce 8800

The GeForce 8000 series graphics processors are a major step forward in graphics in two ways. The most obvious is that they are the first graphics cards to support the Direct X 10 graphics engine in Vista, allowing fully native graphics for Vista's Aero interface. The lesser known is the change in the graphics processor architecture away from specialized processor to a series of unified processors that can be dynamically be assigned to geometry, vertex, physics or pixel operations. This gamble in design change paid off with some outstanding graphics performance even with Direct X 9 and OpenGL graphics.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
RoHS Directive
Consumers in the US are probably not familiar with this law that affects Europe, but it does impact the computer industry as a whole. Computers have been notorious for using toxic metals and hazardous chemicals in their production. All this these materials end up in the environment when they are thrown away. This law puts caps on the amount of materials that can be found in all new electronics sold in Europe. The good news is that many of those goods are also sold in the US providing us with greener products as well.

Can I move my downloaded xbox 360 videos to an external hard drive?

Hayzen

My Xbox 360 hard drive is filling up from all the downloaded content. I want to keep some videos. Can I move those videos onto a portable external hard drive? If so, how?

Answer
Actually, no you can't. Content cannot be moved from the 360's hard drive to a non-360 storage device. The steps the first person posted are to stream media from the external drive which you can do by following them. You want to move the media from your 360 drive to an external which you can't. You need to buy either a 360 memory card or invest in a larger 360 hard drive.

I installed DA:O on my external hard drive because my main is getting full. I want to download the patch, 1.02a, but running the .exe tells me that Dragon Age is not installed. I'm assuming because the game is not installed on my C drive? Is there anyway around this?
@Jeff

How would I do that? I can't modify anything in the properties.

Answer
are you able to point the patch installer to your external drive?
try changing your regisry to default install programs to your external drive so that you can install, then just switch it back once its installed.
BACKUP YOUR REGISTRY and follow these steps

You may want to change the location of your system default folder (C:\Program Files) from C drive to another system drives (D or E drive). By default software setup will attempt to install program in C:\Program Files directory. It is good practice to make the backup of the installed programs, if you installed all your programs in other than C drive. If you have little knowledge about editing windows registry then you can configure your computer for this purpose.

Follow the given steps to configure windows registry:

1. Click on Start button then type Regedit in Run option.
2. Here navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\Windows\ CurrentVersion
3. In right side panel, double click on ProgramFileDir.
4. Now modify the value to any other drive (for example D:\Program Files).
Now close the registry editor and restart your computer after any changes to go into effect.

you may have to put dragon age folder on your hard drive into a folder called Program Files

What is the best external hard drive (upwards of 300 Gb) to buy?

Q. I want to back up my data and an external USB based hard drive seems a logical solution. I need a storage capacity of 300 GB and above, It should require no external power source(except the power drawn from the USB port), Long life and PErhaps the best in its Price range. Any help will be appreciated, perhaps u can leave links to verify ur reviews. thanks

Answer
The previous answer is correct, sort of. If you don't want an external power source, I would suggest going for a laptop external hard drive. A laptop external hard drive has the smaller 2.5 laptop drives inside and require less power. I recently bought a Seagate external laptop drive and it simply requires me to plug in two usb plugs. One plug serves as power and the other as data.

I'd recommend either a Seagate or a Western Digital branded device. They usually have substantial warranty programs, are durable, more compatible, and have high resale value if you later decide to upgrade.

Hope that helps.

drive, do I keep the hard drive plugged into my computer at all times, or do I unplug it once I do the backup. Also, do I need and external hard drive to backup itunes, or will a flash drive suffice?

Answer
No,you still have the file on your computer after you backed up the files. You don't need to plug to your computer all time. You only need to plug to the computer when you want to syncronize it or adding files to it.

It will be advisable to also have your important files on a flash drive with enough space, since most of the time the USB port of the external hard drive lose contact and the computer cannot recorgnise it when you connect.

Whats a good external hard drive for casual use?

I just want a solid external hard drive for backup purposes. I have an iMac with a 1TB hard drive. I'll never use that up, so somewhere between 640-1TB should be good. I want to be able to use it for quite a few years too. Thanks.

Answer
"I have an iMac with a 1TB hard drive. I'll never use that up, so somewhere between 640-1TB should be good."

I have discovered a maxim about storage: 'Data expands to exceed available space". It is a corollary of 'You can never have too much speed (GHz), memory (RAM) or (disk) storage.' I remember when I got my first 3GB drive and had the feeling of never being able to fill it. I have more RAM than that now.

I would choose a good enclosure (from reviews like those at Newegg.com) and then choose an appropriately sized HDD for it. This will preclude you from vendor lock in like WD and Seagate have been doing with proprietary software in their recent all-in-one drives. This also allows you a simpler way of swapping out a dead or dying drive and reusing the casing. I have several generic enclosures that I use regularly as well as a drive dock, which is designed and built to eject drives with out opening the case (like a toaster). You might consider one of these as well.

Why would a portable hard drive simply fail to power-on when I never treat if roughly?

Could it be a USB problem? A internal power problem? I'm at a loss here, and I can't access a lot of important files that weren't located on any other drive . This portable hard drive is only about 3-4 months old.

Answer
I would try using the hard drive on a different USB port and maybe even a different PC. before resorting to the more drastic methods listed below.

It may be a faulty drive. I heard a number a few years back that 40% of all new hardware is bad. So, maybe your drive has already failed. I purchased a brand new dell a few years back and when I received it the printer port was fried.

If you can not retrieve the data and it is extremely important, there are companies that can recover data from damaged drives. But it is expensive. I think something like $500.

I've listed one recovery company that I was able to find below. I would try to get a review about the quality of the company before sending my hard drive off to have the data extracted. Many companies will only charge you if they are able to recover data.

Best way to archive home videos on digital format?

Liam Rules

I have a bunch of home videos on analog VHS-C tapes and now ive moved up to digital camcorder but for long term storage what do people suggest? Im going to store backup dvd's but I also want to store everything on a portable hard drive. Should I save everything in the vob format or mp4, etc,..? Im looking for good quality but also not a huge file size. What does everyone else do?

Answer
You can convert .vob's to say a .divx or .xvid format pretty easily without losing all that much quality(considering your original source is VHS probably won't even notice any quality difference) and it will be about half the size. I'd buy two hard drives, a backup, and then a backup for your backup. It will cost some money up front but it's well worth it when you have a hd go down. You can find usb Tb drives for around 100 - 120 bucks a piece, which is pretty cheap. This is pretty much how I do it. Dvd backups tend to go bad over time, get scratched up, various different ways they just stop working.

I need to transfer files, music, photos from my pc media center? 32GB or 64GB I'm interested in something that automatically transfers the data, password protection, windows xp ready boost, data written to drive auto encrypted, usb 3.0 interface for speed. I would also like to know what the difference is between drag & drop vs data automatically transferred? Also how long can data stay on a flash drive vs portable external hard drive? I'm getting conflicting info from: office depot, office max need to know asap.

Answer
SDHC 32GB Toshiba Flash drive is very good and I use it.
Data can stay on a flash drive and portable hard drives for as long as you want.

External hard drive help?

laylay

I'm looking for a good external hard drive where i can store my photography.
Are there any good ones you could recommend me?

Answer
You didn't say what operating system you are using, Windows, Mac, or Linux.

Seagate, Maxtor, and Western Digital make external hard drives, and they also make the hard drive that is inside the enclosure.

Iomega also makes external hard drives, but the drive inside the enclosure is made by other manufacturers.

I have drives from all four companies (accumulated over the years). Only one has failed.

You can buy the external hard drives from big-box stores like Best Buy, Office Max, Office Depot, Staples, Wal-Mart, Target - and many others. These stores also have websites that you can purchase the drives from.

Many external hard drives are formatted with FAT32, which makes them compatible with all computers, as all recognize it. Windows, Mac, Linux, all can reliably read and write to FAT32. But FAT32 has one glaring limitation - no file can be larger than 4 gigabytes. Videos can easily be larger than this.

Windows uses NTFS, but Apple has not programmed their computers to recognize it, and Linux is reported to be sometimes unreliable when writing to NTFS. Microsoft expects to be paid a fee by other companies who want to be compatible with NTFS, and obviously Apple and Linux don't want to.

Some external hard drives say on them "Ready for Windows" - they mean it is already formatted with NTFS. So if you have a Mac, don't use these.

Some external hard drives say in their ads "Ready for Mac" - these support the Mac file structures. So if you have a Windows computer, don't use these.

Some external hard drives come with software installed on the hard drive. The software is for making backups. You might or might not want this software. You can always delete the software from the external hard drive if you don't want to use it.

Usually when people talk about "external hard drives" we mean drives that require a power adapter that plugs into the AC outlet. These drives have a lot of capacity. Older drives were USB 2.0 - newer drives will have USB 3 capability.

Usually when people talk about "portable hard drives" we mean drives that get all their power from the USB port. Older drives were USB 2.0 - newer drives will have USB 3 capability.

I bought a Fantom 1TB external hard drive that someone had formatted for a Mac. I have Windows XP and am trying to reformat the drive. The drive does not show up under My Computer. I pull up the disk management window and try to select the drive. All it will let me do is view the properties, but it won't let me select format drive. Any suggestions?

Answer
Connect your Fantom 1TB external hard drive and depending on what version of Windows you are currently using (mine is Windows 7), right click on your Computer icon on your Desktop and click on Manage. Then select Storage then Disk Management. You should be able to see all the drives including the Fantom 1TB external drive. It will probably be labeled as unknown. Right click on it and you should be able to see Delete Volume. Click that and you will get a warning that all data will be erased. Acknowledge OK and the volume will be deleted. Once done, do the same but this time you should see Create Volume and after that, just format.

Good luck and I hope this helps.

How to make external hard drive writeable to mac and PC?

Jake

I need to make my external hard drive writeable from my mac and my PC. How can i do this so i can use it fully on both??

Answer
@brisray:
Stand back. I'm going to shoot a few holes in your -- answer.

-- "Macs can natively read but not write to NTFS volumes.
Windows cannot read from or write to drives formatted in Macs."

Should be "Windows cannot natively mount drive volumes formatted Mac OS Extended." With HFSExplorer, free, Windows can mount a Mac volume and read files from it... but not write to it. With MacDrive or TransMac, Windows can mount and read-write Mac volumes.

-- "Macs can read and write NTFS volumes using MacFuse"

Not true MacFuse only allows using third-party drivers (technically, it allows creating a file system without root). Without the third-party driver, MacFuse does nothing.

-- "Windows (XP and above) and Macs (Snow Leopard and above) can read and write to exfat drives."
Not exactly. exFAT works with Windows 7 SP1 and above, plus Mac OS 10.6.4 and above.

Now for the real correct answer....
-- DO NOT USE ANY FAT FORMAT FOR ANY LARGE DRIVE VOLUME. That applies to both FAT32 and exFAT. Remember how XP would chop a drive into 32 GB partitions to use FAT32? That was because Microsoft knew how lousy and inefficient FAT is with large volumes due to cluster size increasing with volume size.
-- REAL ANSWER: Either 1. use NTFS with write enabled in OS X, or 2. use two partitions.

Advantage of 1: Files can be added to one large volume without planning for cross-platform partition arrangement.
Advantage of 2.: You can use Time Machine with that Mac volume. Also, the Mac volume can be used with other Mac OS systems that do not have write enabled for NTFS.

-- For NTFS, and OS 10.6.8 or earlier, use NTFS-3G (free) to enable read-write in OS X.
-- For OS 10.7 or later, use Paragon NTFS For Mac (US$20) to enable read-write in OS X.

{In fact, the newest version of NTFS-3G seems to work in OS 10.7, but the developer has no install package, just source code. If you know how to compile it, you can use it with OS 10.7.}
