How can I install a wireless printer to my laptop if the printer series won't show up in the installation?

portable hard drive won't show up image

Stevie

My uncle is trying to connect all of our laptops to his wireless Deskjet printer but when I go to add printer, in the list of drivers and whatnot, the deskjet series that he has will not show up in the listing. I clicked Windows update and still nothing. Is there a way around this or a way to add the printer where it will connect to the laptop without doing this? He downloaded the driver and software already from the HP website but it wants to do this again within the control panel, if I'm describing that correctly. Any tips?

Answer
Yes and it's not as hard as it sounds.

Just go to the printer's website and look for a link to the manufacturer's drivers. Locate the specific model and download that driver software to a flash drive or some portable media. Just used that media to load the drivers onto your laptop.

How to watch movies on my xbox from a hard drive?

B-bro

soi hooked up my hard drive to my xbox but when i go to videos it wont show.. there is nothing on portable device its like its not even hooked up so i dont know what to do to make it work :/ please help

Answer
The xbox 360 can read FAT32 formatted HDDÅ.

It can read MP4 and AVI files but no MKV. Also it won't load ripped dvd's or ISO's. And the MP4's are limited to some baseline profiles like most devices really. So movies ripped with experimental codec settings might not work.

So the question is first, is the HDD Fat32 formatted. If so the content can be read.

Second is what format and codec the files are :)

One is able to stream the movies through Media Player 11 I belief. Though not a fan of streaming myself. Best is to get your son to show it how to do it again as all these methods and things are quite technical! Once you seen it work you understand it trust me. But you first need someone to show you how to do it.

What is the difference between an external hard drive and a portable hard drive?

quothe_the

I need a hard drive to save all my downloads for iTunes on so that I don't use up the computer space. I found an 500gb external hard drive for about 80$, and 160gb portable hard drive for about 110$. What's the difference between an external and portable, because it sounds like the same concept to me.

Answer
they are the exact same but some people don't know the right word
but portable hard drives are pocket sizes kinda like a flash drive but a bit bigger and external hard drive is more of an at home one you plug into the wall. id go with the external 500gb for 80 rather than 160 for 110 500 is allot more and more useful my opinion.

I have a lot of stuff on the hard drive and was wondering if it is possible to remove it from the pc and use it as an external hard drive for my laptop,
It doesn't need to be brilliant, Even if it is just to recover all of the stuff on it.

Why is Windows 7 unable to recognize my external hard drive?

OS: Windows 7 Ultimate

External Hard Drive: HP SD320A

NOTES:

- It works on other computers.
- It works on another computer that is also running Windows 7 Ultimate.
- Formatted as NTFS.
- Connects to computer via USB
- Had HP Software installed prior to format and errors.
- Device is not recognized in Disk Manager
- Device is recognized as a Mass Storage Device in the Control Panel

Thank you.

Answer
Hi:

When Windows 7 start up. The first thing it does; is to send out a request to your Drive Manager and ask Hey buddy what drives do we have and the drive manager tell it, this what we got Drive C: Drive D : and Drive A ( if got that ( a Floppy disk drive) ). when you connected it to the USB port The USB bus should send a Request to Windows and say we got a New piece of Hardware and windows 7 should send a request to the New hardware asking what are you? and if your new drive has a plug and load program - it send a request to Windows 7 saying I'm a New disk drive and I want to load my drivers ( the interfacing program that enable windows 7 and the New drive to talk to each other) into you and please put my Id in your Disk Manager So I will recognize via my coded input code. And Windows will either say "go ahead" or No, because I don't recognize you HP code however sometime Windows 7 will recognize it - only after you restarted your again with the USB still plug in to it in both your drive and it. than it will recognize your external hard drive. to initialize the drive program

I hope this helps

How can I access my External Hard Drive on Windows 7?

Johnny B

I have a WD 500GB External Hard Drive and used it for my Windows Vista. However, I recently upgraded to Windows 7. I have all of my information and everything on my hard drive and when I plug it in, it says that I can't access it unless if I format my External Hard Drive. Is there a way to accessing my files on it without formatting it?

Answer
Hello Johnny,

I would look for an updated driver for your External Hard Drive. Do not reformat it- you will erase the data on the drive. Go to the manufacturer of the drive and find updated drivers if they have any, otherwise try the other methods here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Tips-for-fixing-common-driver-problems.

Why is America so much better than Canada and Mexico?
Only the people saying America is better have come up with actual reasons so far.

Answer
America has capitalism. The latest new cancer medicines were invented in America because of capitalism.

Because of America's strong capitalistic values, most of the stuff in the world was invented by Americans.

And, most Asian countries survive by making copies of U.S. inventions. (China and India both devalue their currency to make their products look less expensive than American products. Japan also devalued its currency in the 1980's.)

American inventions:
Plasma tv, electronic tv, lcd screens, cellphone, digital signal processing (used in all cellphones). Java(used in most cellphones), DVD and CD's (optical recording), computer chips, personal computers, laptop computers, digital audio players, microwave ovens, digital camera, laser printers, inkjet printers, computer hard drives, computer chip manufacturing (America still leads the world in chip making), fluorescent light, advanced LED's, OLED, digital watches, GPS, GPS navigation, mouse, keyboard, operating system, high level computer language, USB, remote controls, MASER, email, transistors, refrigerator, electronic calculators, VCR, internet, telephone, satellite communication, portable communication radios(walkie talkie), digital satellites, stabilized rubber(shoes, condoms, tires, etc), nuclear powerplants, moon rovers, martian rovers, copy machine, best modern medicines, iron furnace stove, electric stove, air conditioning, airplane(engine-powered), computer animation(motion picture), aspartame(sugarless sweetner), assembly line, automated teller machine (ATM), prepared baby food, bag (flat-bottomed paper), bandage (adhesive), barcode, barbed wire, blood bank, blow dryer, bra, bread slicing machine, portable camera, food cans, can openers, cardboard (corrugated). carbon 14 dating, cash register, cat litter, mail order catalogs, breakfast cereal, chewing gum, laptop computer, personal computer, oral contraceptives, cotton gin, crayons, credit card, heart defibrillator, smoke detector, artificial diamond, disposable diapers, dishwasher, drinking fountain, electric chair, modern rocket, escalator, fiberglass, freeze dried food, frozen food, genetic engineering, electric guitar, coat hanger(wire), electric iron, jeans, jello, kevlar, laundromat, lipstick, electric motor, morse code, nylon, paper towel, parking meter, phonograph (records), petroleum jelly, Post-it Notes, potato chips, car radio, electric razor, safety razor, revolver (gun), roller coaster, safety pin, Scotch tape, stapler, first successful steamboat, drinking straw, sunscreen, tampon(cotton), teflon, telegraph, toilet tissue, disposable tissue, tractor, automatic signal lights, viagra, video games, washing machine(electric), computer databases, handheld computers, glass bottle making machine, CCD(digital chips used in all digital cameras) which are used to convert light into pictures(also used in missiles made by the U.S., Russia, and Europe), DSL, CAT Scans "diagnostic X ray systems", laser ranging, laser multiplexing, air brakes, silicon solar cells, digital light processor, digital signal processor(used in all digital telephones), fiber optic wire, nearly all types of lasers, first laser medical treatments, microprocessor, automated telephone switches, radiator, modem, word processor, ethernet, 3-D computer graphics, nuclear submarines, liquid fuel rocket (invented in 1910's), etc.

Also, most of the chips made in Asia are still designed in America.

Hy, i need a good mini laptop for school, im in 7 grade, but since im doing a lot of projects at school, i need something more portable. I have a Dell XPS M1530, my battery is totally dead, so, yeah i need laptop, so if someone can tell me a good laptop, i ll really apreciete that, P.S:( Not toshiba or compac, i had problems with those marks).

Answer
Best and cheapest cannot be used in the same sentence, one usually excludes the other.
YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR, ever heard that saying?
Also, only a totally uneducated person will shop for computers by brands, considering almost all are assembled in the same Chinese plants and from more or less the same components. Only the specs, your budget ($$) and your usage needs should determine your decision on what to buy, not a brand name or cool looks.

One thing is not clear: What do you mean by mini-laptop?
Is it a Netbook you want, or just a small display size regular laptop?

Small display size (11 to 14 inches) regular laptops are very expensive, due to the size and high portability and the fact that they are very sought after for those very reasons. Price-wise, they start at about $750 and can go all to way up to over $2,000

A Netbook on the other hand, is just a very basic, low end specs version of a portable computer, mainly intended for light processing tasks, such as web browsing, word processing or youtube and other streaming videos. Netbooks are relatively cheap, ranging from under $200 to over $450.
A good quality Netbook will be in the upper limit of this price range, of course.

For both small display size regular laptops and Netbooks, DO NOT buy one with AMD processor, only buy Intel.

Best small display size regular laptop specs:

Processor (CPU): Intel Core i3-2300M series or i5-2400M or 2500M series, best being i7-2600QM and i7-2700QM series.
Preferably with a dedicated (discrete) graphics card from the nVidia GeForce series, although most will only have integrated graphics, due to lack of physical space inside the small laptop case and power supply limitations.
Memory (RAM): at least 4GB DDR3 RAM, best would be 8GB
Hard drive: At least 320GB, with 500GB or 1TB being best (that is your storage space for personal files, programs, games, etc.)
Incorporated Webcam and microphone
At least 3, preferably 4 USB ports, if one or more are USB 3.0 it's even better
Memory Card reader (at least for SD/SDHC cards)
Headphones and mic jack.
Video output, either HDMI or DVI or both

Best Notebook Specs:

Processor (CPU): Dual Core Intel Atom @1.50GHz or more
Graphics: nVidia Ion
Memory (RAM): 2GB or more
Hard drive size: 250GB or more (that is your storage space for personal files, programs, etc.)
Incorporated Webcam and microphone
At least 2, preferably 3 USB ports
Headphones and mic jack.
Video output, preferably HDMI or DVI, but VGA is also OK.

Could I use a portable hard drive in place of ram somehow?

PUDDI

My computer has very little ram and I don't have 200 - 300 dollars for a new ram card(s). Is there any way to use portable hard drives or usb drives in place of the ram card(s)?

Answer
Nope, but Vista and Windows 7 can do it using a flash drive. I think it kills the life of the flash drive overall so I would not recommend using the flash drive for any other purposes.

Also you must be getting ripped off by Best Buy or something. Check out newegg.com or amazon.com and find some nice RAM for about $100 or less.

I want to buy a new gaming laptop for collage.I have this year an 1+ from high school and I am going to go in 2011-2012 in collage. I want a top gaming laptop of 3500-5500$
Will there be a new CPU, Graphic card, Ram that will be much faster then ?

Answer
This is sort of a pointless question.

Of course there will be new CPU's, new GPU's, faster and higher capacity RAM and hard drives. They are in a constant state of change, and new additions to each of those categories come out at least once a year, so you're looking at at least 2 generations better than what we have now.

But you might want to rethink your strategy, as a super powerful gaming laptop is not very portable and it's battery life will suck. And as a college student myself, you are going to want a laptop that you can take where ever you need, easily (both weight and size) and something that wont die in an hour. Come back to Yahoo Answers when you are ready to buy a gaming laptop, as any advice as to parts is pure speculation and will lead you astray.

What is the difference between the mac book and mac book air?

I know the difference with the mac book pro but these two laptops ( mac book and mac book air) appear the same and seem like they have the same technology.i don't know which one to buy now!

Answer
MacBook Pro:
- You can add in a Core i5 or i7 in it if you want. More RAM. Capable of doing heavy tasks, such as video editing. Sometimes you can get 10 hours of battery life. Also, there are more ports than the MacBook Air.

MacBook Air:
- Thin, Lite, and small. Its very portable. No Hard Drives, it uses a Flash Storage. Its not as powerful compared to the MacBook / Pro series. And it uses the Core 2 Duo Chip, instead of an i3 processor. Its best for Daily web surfing, Photos, Media, Documents, etc; Not used for heavy duty tasks.

The new Early 2011 MacBook Pro 15" Apple MacBook Pro MC723LL is an incredible leap in performance. I deal with new Macs every day, and most of the time a performance increase is not that great. This new line is a HUGE leap in performance, both in processor (quad core vs dual core) as well as graphics (discreet). I bought the low end 2 GHZ model and increased the RAM to 8G. I give VMWare 2 processors and 4G of RAM...Windows screams!!! For Adobe CS5 work, much, much faster than dual core.

How to retrieve files on a WD external hard drive with a mac.?

Brandon

I used a portable hard drive to back up some files from a PC. Now I need to retrieve those files using a mac. when I try to open the hard drive it tells me that it is not readable. How can I make this thing work so that I can get my files.

Answer
Answer for Windows 7 and OS 10.6.8:

The drive volume has errors. Windows doesn't care much about errors. OS X does, so it won't mount. Repair it on the Windows system like this....
-- Right-click the drive volume in "Computer".
-- Choose "Properties".
-- Choose "Tools".
-- At "Error checking", click the "Check Now" button.
-- Put a check mark (tick) for "Automatically fix file system errors".
-- Put a check mark (tick) for "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors".
-- Click the "Start" button.
-- Click to unmount.
-- Wait.

To do this in OS X....
-- Download and install either NTFS-3G or SL-NTFS (latter for OS 10.6.7 or later 64--bit).
-- Restart.
-- Connect the drive. At the alert message, click "Ignore".
-- Open Disk Utility.
-- Select the external volume ("Volume" is the partition name, probably faded appearance).
-- Select the "First Aid" tab.
-- Click the "Repair Disk" button.
-- Wait.

What is the best camcorder/camera for low light situations?

Mr. X-CLU$

I plan on doing some YouTube videos in the future, but the problem is that my room is kinda dark, and my cellphone is terrible when it comes to dark areas. Are there any cameras for $200 or under for low light situations?
If not in my price range, anything not too expensive is fine.

Answer
Your question #1: What is the best camcorder/camera for low light situations?
Response: Any camcorder with a large lens diameter (to let light in to the camcorder/camera) and large imaging chip (to process what little light comes in through the lens when it is dark.

Your question #2: "Are there any cameras for $200 or under for low light situations?"
Response: No.

"not too expensive" means different things to different people.

Consumer grade camcorders start at the low end with small (less than 30mm) diameter lenses and small (less than 1/6") single imaging chip. As the price goes up, the lens diameters and imaging chips get larger. At around $400, the lens diameter is around 37mm and the imaging chips can get as large as 1/4". At around $800 the lens diameter is around 43mm and the imaging chips approach 1/3". At around $1,200 the lens diameter is around 58mm and the imaging chips are around 1/3". As you continue up the price spectrum to high-end consumer (sometimes called "prosumer") camcorders, $3,000 finds 72mm lens diameter with 3CCD or 3CMOS 1/3" imaging chip arrays - these do quite well under low-light conditions.

So... what can you do if you can't afford a camcorder/camera that can behave well under low light conditions? It depends what you are capturing to video, but one relatively easy way (assuming you will be editing the video with a half decent editor) is to add LOTS of light so your room is no longer dark - then, using your editor, make it look dark... This is call shooting "day for night".
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4MaC44MU4iw

When you go this route, use whatever camera/camcorder you want - and make the investment in lighting and a decent video editor - not a camera/camcorder. For $200, assuming your computer has a fast CPU, 4 gig RAM or more and lots of hard drive space - Sony Vegas is affordable and a couple or three worklights from the hardware store like
http://www.amazon.com/Voltec-08-00210-500-Watt-Portable-Worklight/dp/B004ZMUHBG
would be plenty.

Answer
Yes as long as it's compatible with the 360. It needs to be FAT 32 to play media on the console. You can partition it under the memory section when you choose to use it to store 360 content. Set aside 16GBs for use on there and the rest will be accessible on your computer to add media.

How to transfer to the external hard drive that I bought the music, videos and pictures in my lap top?

Joshua H

I bought an external hard but I don't know how to use it to transfer my videos music and pictures . My lap top's hard drive is almost full and I want to transfer it to my external hard drive. Can somebody help me?

Answer
The drive will appear as a drive letter in Computer (ie: Drive E:, F:, or some other letter) within approximately 30 seconds of connecting and turning on the drive.
Often the AutoPlay window will appear within 30 seconds.
You can click on "Open Folder to View Files Using Windows Explorer" to open the drive letter, or on the drive letter in (My) Computer. When that window opens, the drive is functioning normally.
Then you can simply drag-and-drop data, or copy-and-paste data, into the drive to use it manually.

I am considering purchasing an external hard drive to store photos on. I have a macbook pro and will by an external hard drive for a mac.... will it be just a matter of dragging wanted photos to it?

Any other tips or suggestions when it comes to purchasing one?
Thank you

Answer
pretty much. works like a internal hardrive. all you do is select the drive and drag and drop. easy!

i do suggest buying a backup for it tho. i have 2. encase one goes out.
buy from western digital. they have the best warranty. usually up to 2 years on there drives. if they go out you can replace for free. warranty are only valid for the drive and not the information on the drive. data recovery is at own expense.

i use 2, 1.5TB hardrives and a portable 1tb

Should portable hard drive takes forever to calculate changes?

Pearl Of T

I put it in for 3 hours and it doesn't calculate changes and backup my files. Should I just erase it all and restart the process?
It's a Seagate 1TB portable harddrive.
I use Time Machine on my mac

Answer
What do you mean by "it doesn't calculate changes"?

Yes, I would format the HDD. Your external HDD may have come with a software that may allow you to do that. If you format the drive via Windows, it may erase the "virtual drive" in your external HDD. I would also recommend updating the firmware if that's available.

What I said about the "virtual drive" applies to Mac as well. Is your external HDD compatible with Mac? I mean, is it formatted with "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" file-system format?

What are some really good laptops?

I am looking for a new laptop. So far, I am looking at a Dell and HP. I have been researching, and it seems to me that Dell has better reviews.

I am looking for..

-Something that is portable and possibly thin
-Has very good battery life
-and one that is fast with internet, and computer itself

Right now I am looking at a Dell Inspiron 15 and a HP Mini.

any opinions??
help..

thanks.

Answer
Mini computers, also known as netbooks, often have 10" screens and run a slower CPU (usually ATOM based). They are great for people on the go, but not as your main computer. If someone liked to surf the net on a bigger device than a smartphone (Blackberry, iPhone, etc.) as well has have more computer functionality than an iPad... then the HP Mini would be a good choice.

I would, however, recommend against it.

Sony, IBM, Toshiba, and Acer all offer better machines than Dell. HP and Dell's quality are suspect and Gateway is right there with them.

If I were you, I'd check "deal" websites like slickdeals.net and fatwallet.com and do searches on "notebook" and see if anything good has popped up on their pages. They find sweet deals and you just have to click the link and purchase goods from places like Best Buy, Office Depot, Fry's, etc. They only point you to where the deals are.

Apple Macbook is not a bad option (as someone mentioned). However, you better have the money to do this. If you go to school you can get a $100 discount. The last 2 years around memorial day weekend, apple offered a promotion where you could also get a free iPod touch 8GB with the purchase of a mac.

Use shop discover (if you have a discover card, or use your debit/credit cards website if Best Buy is listed as a company they deal with) and it will get you 5% cash rewards as well.

You also get a free printer in the deal! A standard Macbook would set you back $899 with the education discount. Macbook Pro 13" would cost you $1099. Selling that iPod touch for $150 could further extend you dollar if you want that mac badly enough.

However, if you aren't a mac fan (I'm not) you go with a PC. I probably wouldn't recommend any laptop PC without an i5 processor (CPU). Yes, there are AMD fans around and I like those processors as well...but the Intel i5 screams and is worth the cost. Your computer will pwn with an i5 over most other CPUs.

Make sure the computer has 4GB of RAM (DDR3 would be best).

The hard drive can be 250GB or greater. The fact is, you can purchase a 640GB hard drive for $60 on sale and $80 or so at regular price these days and it is a quick swap. Do not overpay for a hard drive "upgrade" that will cost you significantly more.

Blu-ray drive is nice if you have an HDMI-out port on your notebook computer and an HDTV at home. If you don't want blu-ray, no big deal. Do not pay extra for it.

One of the most important things in your computer will be the onboard video card. "Integrated graphics" is OK for most online things, but a dedicated video card from ATi (Radeon) or GeForce (NVIDIA) will help your computer actually play some modern games quite well. If you plan on playing WoW or other graphics intensive games, you need to ensure your laptop has decent onboard video. This will cost you big as you move up the ladder of quality on these items.

You can get a budget computer for $400-$450 that will be low end. If you get a great deal on a mid-grade computer, it could be anywhere from $500-650. A laptop of $800 should have decent onboard video capabilities. Anything more and you better have great stats on those machines.

I'd personally stay away from Dell's lower end machines. They are terrible. I know someone who bought one for way too much money and it had a 4-cell (!!!) battery that barely lasted a month. The RAM was cut to bare minimum standards for Windows XP. It was a solid built machine, but it sucked on the inside!

Here are some recent "deals":

MSI A6200-038US 15.6" Notebook: Intel Core i3-330M, 4GB DDR3, 320GB HDD, Win 7 Home Premium $450 after $50 MIR + S&H($8) @ Frys (EXPIRED)

Toshiba Satellite L555-S7008 Notebook PC - Intel Core i5-430M 2.26GHz, 4GB DDR3, 500GB HDD, DVDRW, 17.3" - $571.99 (With -$78 "Bing cashback rewards!)

http://www.circuitcity.com/applications/searchtools/item-Details.asp?EdpNo=6142909&sku=T78-17311&srkey=l555-s7008

This is a 17" model with an i5 CPU. This is a great machine for the price. And you register a bing "cashback" account, click on "circuit city" (Yes, they are alive after someone else purchased the old circuit city website and name) and you'll get a percentage cashback. NICE!

Good luck. You'll find a great deal and a nice laptop if you do your research. This place is a great start!

Thanks for your question. I have decided to make a website dedicated to giving people advice on what kind of computers are available and what they should buy for themselves. No domain name set yet, but I should be up an running in a week. Good luck!

What's the most important spec to pay attention to when buying a laptop? ?

Q. My old laptop finally went out on me after 10 years. I'm going to need a laptop for school this semester and I'm wondering what is the most important spec I should pay attention to when I go to best buy tomorrow? (Besides price of course) I'm a college student and ill more than likely use this to write papers and research and occasionally go on YouTube when I'm bored. What would you recommend?

Answer
The most important specification? Why, the pri.... oh yeah... you already accounted for the price being the most important. So... what's the second most important specification?

Well... you can't really say that storage space is an important specification, because not only can you get any number of portable external hard drives or flash drives to keep your data on, but it is far smarter to keep your music, movies, pictures, and documents on a separate storage device just in case you ever have to perform a factory recovery and reinstall Windows. I mean, doesn't it just suck horribly when that time comes, and you end up wiping out everything you had, and you say "Oh, I wish I had put my stuff somewhere else!"? Wouldn't it be better to do it right from the get go? So, then it really doesn't matter if your laptop has a large hard drive, since you would be keeping stuff on a different drive anyway.

Some would say that Ram is important... but that really depends on what you intend to do with the laptop. Yes, I know you said you will be writing papers and do research and occasionally go on YouTube when you are bored... but I do all that (and much more) on the 7 year old Toshiba Satellite A75 that is upstairs on my coffee table. You can buy one used on eBay for around $200 or less. And... that laptop not only has 1.5gb Ram, but it is limited to 1.5gb of Ram. That old laptop is fast and responsive. Now, most (not all) laptops you buy today are going to come with 3 or 4gb of Ram... and with the bloated Windows 7 and bloated applications that are around today, you will end up needing that much Ram when using them. So, is it really an "important" specification? I suppose it is, if you are scanning the extreme low end of available new laptops, since they will come with the bare minimum amount of ram necessary. If your budget is going to put you in the market for a laptop costing $500 or more, then Ram is something you are not going to have to worry about.

Is your processor the most important specification? Well... if you haven't already gotten this impression, then I should tell you. The most important specification really depends on what you intend to do with it. Since what you intend to do can be done with a $250 Netbook from Walmart... a Netbook with a 1.6ghz single core Intel Atom processor... in your particular case, the processor is not all that important of a specification.

So what then, would be the most important specification for *you*?

Battery Life.

You want to be able to sit in as many classes and take notes with as you can, before you charge it up. You want to be able to use it on the go as much as you can before you have to charge it. You don't want a laptop with 2 hours of battery life. You want at least 5 hours, if not more like 8 hours. Heck, you might even want to get a laptop that you have already found an extended life battery for (a 12 cell battery).

Can I install an operating system downloaded to my computer to an external mac harddrive?

I already have a USB connection to the external drive to my computer
The OS for the Mac is OS X Tiger (10.4.6) and I'm downloaded this OS to my Hp Windows 7 laptop and it's in the form of an iso image..How do I proceed?

Answer
Which operating system and which computer are you downloading it on?

An external Mac hard drive can be set up as a bootable OSX system drive.
It has to be formatted with GUID partition map, and formatted Mac OS Extended (HFS+) which would be normal for a Mac drive.

You need to have a workable installer, which could be on DVD or in an ISO file.
If you have a Mac machine, you can clone the drive to the external with Carbon Copy Cloner and it will be bootable.
