I have a western digital my passport essential 320gb portable hard drive. How do I erase all data and make it exactly as it was when it came out of the box from the store? I need to erase all profiles (passwords and all) and data that is saved to it but can't figure out how to do it. I know the password and all obviously because it's mine, and I am logged into the sync app right now, I just need to figure out how to get it all removed.

Answer
What OS are you using? In Windows you can use Disk Administrator. Just select the drive and choose format. Even easier, open a command window and type:

FORMAT <drive>:

CAUTION: Make sure you specify the correct drive letter, as you will be erasing everything on the drive (which is what you want to do)!

You can run HELP FORMAT first, to check the options.

Is there some way to access files from a portable hard drive formatted for a MAC on a PC?

I use a Seagate portable hard drive formatted for a MAC. Is there some way I can access these files on both a PC and a MAC without reformatting the external drive/erasing my files?

Answer
You can either use this, which isn't that great but it's free. http://hem.bredband.net/catacombae/hfsx.html

Or you can use this, which isn't free. http://www.mediafour.com/products/macdrive/

Or, if you have access to an OS X Snow Leopard install DVD, you can try and find the HFS drivers on there.
