1) Shuffle 512MB/120 songs/$69/no display - I fell that this is more of the poor or blind man's iPod. it's really cheap, and it's a great interface if your blind but not too functional after that
2) Shuffle 1GB/240 songs/$99/no display - same deal, more songs
3) Nano 1GB/240 songs/$149/Color display w/ Photos - The Nano is neat because it is so small but better yet, it has flash memory which means that you won't see any delays or hear any skips what so ever. Comes in two colors Black and White. There are also a lot of cool features like being able to have world wide clocks and a way to lock out the screen if you need to leave it some where for a sec (the bigger iPods have this as well)
3) Nano 2GB/500 songs/$199/Color display w/ Photos - Same thing only more than 2x the songs for $50 more
4) Nano 4GB/1000 songs/$249/Color display w/ Photos - Same thing only more than 2x the songs of the 2GB for $50 more
5) iPod 30GB/7500 songs/75 Hours of Video/$299/Color Display w/ Photos and Videos - If you are willing to pay for a standard iPod, this is totally the way to go. you get all the cool features of the nano (minus the flash memory and size) but not only that, but you can watch T.V. shows, music videos, Video Podcasts and a lot of the videos you have laying around your computer. if you have the money, go for this one. It's just the right size IMHO. and yes it comes in black or white.
6) iPod 60GB/15,000 songs/150 Hours of Video/$399/Color Display w/ Photos and Videos - all the features of the 30, but double the HD space for $100 more. This is really only your solution if you have a BIG music library or if you want to use your iPod as a portable USB hard drive. unless you have the need for a 60, go with a 30.
and BTW, Get and Apple Care Protection Plan. You won't regret it and you will make your Mac Specialist happy

is there such a thing as a portable hard drive that you can download directly to without the need for a computer? i'm going on a trip where i will be taking a hefty number of photos and i'd like to be able to dump the memory cards without also having to bring a computer with me.
i know i could just bring a bunch of memory cards but that's a lot to buy and i'd prefer to back them up anyway. does such a product exist? or am i stuck with the laptop?

Portable drive to load camera photos were common in the 10,20,40, and 60GB sizes until they were priced out of the market by the high capacity SD flash drives. You can buy those now for less than $1 a GB in the 16, 32GB size. Be sure you test each one before going on your trip.
If you still want a very large (500GB or bigger) hard disk, contact a photo store or B&H Photo or Adorama about those that interface with cameras or camera cards. One thing to consider is in a stack of cards, if one goes bad, the others are OK. But if a 320HD is damaged, the whole thing and all its pix are gone.
