How could I make my ps3 detect my portable hard drive?

rosas_jess

I have an 80gb seagate portable hard drive and works with usb 2.0, but my ps3 80gb wont detect it..it will only detect my small ipod and my psp..any help is greatly appreciated.

Answer
You may have to press triangle more then once depending on the hard drives file structure

Simply take a jump drive, external hard drive, etcâ¦hook it up to the USB port on the front and then you--

Goto to view under music, or video, or photos, scroll down to the drive you've hooked up hover over it then push Triangle(notX) then select display all (view all)(press X) and it will show everything on the jump drive or external harddrive. Then either listen to or view the music, video, photos or copy to the ps3 hard drive directly.

If you have a psp you can also use that to move files from pc to ps3.

Hitachi 500 GB Portable Hard Drive Connect to PS3?

K

I've been looking for ways I can connect this hard drive to my PS3. As I've come to discover, it seems the PS3 only recognizes FAT32 (which supposedly has a limit of 32GB). What I was considering (hearing this is possible) is creating a partition in my Hitachi Portable Hard Drive that would be FAT32, but I am not 100% sure how to go about this. I fear the possibility of ending up with a 32GB Hitachi Storage (all the way down from 500GB!) if I make an error. Does anyone know how I can create the partition while keeping the rest of the space on my drive as well? (ex. Have one part 32GB FAT32 format, and the other part 468GB exFAT format)

Thank You and I hope to hear your responses.

Answer
Windows has a peculiar limitation in that it cannot create a FAT32 partition larger than 32GB. However, 3rd party software can.

CompuApps Swissknife can format your hard drive and make any sized partitions you want. The premium edition adds support for Windows 7 and is inexpensive. The free edition only supports up to Win XP.
http://www.compuapps.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=category&layout=blog&id=48&Itemid=193

Easeus Partiton Magic works for everything up to Windows 7. Unfortunately, it is 32-bit only.
http://www.partition-tool.com/personal.htm

I used Swissknife to format my 640GB WD Elements external HDD into a 460GB NTFS partition and a 150GB FAT32 partition for use in the PS3 and PC, and my Maxtor 250GB Onetouch as a single FAT32 partition for PS3 compatibility and portability.

The software will not delete your existing data unless you tell it to delete the existing partition. You can shrink existing partitions, or make them larger. If you make a mistake, you can always try again. Partitions can easily be erased and created. It is very hard to make a mistake, since the software is fairly intuitive.

what is wrong with external hard drive?

YO

i have a 500gb seagate expansion portable hard drive, it was working, but now when i plug it into my pc, it does not show up in my computer, but it show up in devices and printer ( in windows 7)
my life is in this hard drive help............................................

Answer
Though hopefully not the case, you should be prepared (mentally at least) that the data on the drive is unrecoverable. With whats happening its a delicate situation. Check in the device manager ->disk manager and look what kind of drive it is showing up as. If it shows up in there that's really good. It might just have somehow got switched (by the OS) to the offline setting. All you would need to do then is initialize the drive (wizard will do all the work for you) and wait to see what comes up. Long as the data isn't corrupted you should then be able to use the drive again through the regular windows explorer.

If the computer will let you, run scandisk on and it might be able to fix the disk with just that. Even if it still doesn't work afterwords, it will report any unfix able errors it might have come across. Some of these errors you can still work on, while some basically say your disk is toast.

Not sure what kind of external drive you have, if the above fails or doesn't show up; another possible solution is to take the drive out of the enclose and hook it up directly to the pc. If the motherboard successfully identifies the drive you might be in the clear. Once you're booted into Windows check if its in the explorer pane, if not repeat the procedure about about adding the disk. If it works under this case, something in the enclosure is broken and you just need to replace that.

What I'm afraid that might happen is that one of these two methods will let you successfully mount the disk, but your data might not be there. It just shows up as a 0gb drive and will ask you if you want to format. This means your disk index is probably corrupted and unable to read the data on the disk now. If that's the case you're looking at data retrieval services; though if that is the case I know of a good freeware forensic disk program that could possibly salvage your data if the worst case scenario is what it has become. At that point contact me via email and I'll send you the info, you could also mail me as well if some other kind of strange behavior pops up.

Assuming that you're at least able to get back to the data, I would go to Seagate website and download their SeaTools diagnostic program. Run it on the disk and see what comes up, it could come up with the error that the drive is defective and must be returned (basically it gives you a generic message saying that the drive is dead and nothing you can do about it) or replace. It might be possible that we're able to get the disk readable and up and running, but you should run the diagnostics anyways to see if the disk is reporting any failures. A partially broken disk can still continue to function until you pass a certain threshold or you get a catastrophic failure. After completion it will usually say that your disk is fine, or that its replacing, or you should replace it before it does fail.

WD Elements SE Portable external hard drive doesn't show up on my computer?

neryromero

I've had the external HD for about six months now and it had been working great until yesterday when it suddenly stopped showing up on my laptop (macbook pro). I've tried it on three different computers (mac and one of them running windows 7 and the other windows 8). I've been on google all day and I've had nothing to that works. I've tried computer management - disk management on both window computers and it's not there, well not in a way that works. It shows Disk 1 but with nothing in it and it says "not initialized" and when I try to I get an error message of "the request could not be performed because of an I/O device error". I really have no idea what to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also I'm really trying to fix it without formatting it or losing anything since I have a lot of important things on the HD.

Thank you
I can't remember if it's mentioned above but I've tried different cables already and nothings changed on any computer

Answer
Do this...
â Connect to the Mac.
â Open Disk Utility.
** If the drive is not shown at left, it is a hardware defect. See below.
â Select the hardware name at left (NOT the partition name, but the brand, such as "WDC blahblah").
â Select the "Partition" tab.
â Under "Volume scheme" is "Current" and under that is a rectangle. Select the rectangle.
â Click the - sign to remove the partition, and click "OK".
â When that is done, click "Apply".
â Select the "Erase" tab and erase as "Mac OS Extended (journaled)" to use with Mac OS or as "MS-DOS" to use with Windows, and then click "Erase".
â When that is done, if it is for Windows, connect it to the Windows system, and format as NTFS.

** If the drive is not shown at all in Disk Utility, either the cable is bad, the case is bad, or the HDD inside the case is bad.

Question About External Media Hard Drives for HP?

Corey N

So my HP (HP Pavilion Elite) sounds like it is on death's door. Something is wrong with it and I'm going to send it in to get fixed but I have a large amount of music, movies and documents I want to save before I send it to get repaired. Last time they said everything would be fine and my computer got wiped, so I am taking no chances.

I don't know anything about computers, all I know is on the front of my computer is says "Media Drive Bay" which is for a portable media drive that I can load all of my media files/documents onto and not have to worry.

What are some good brands that you would suggest that are compatible with an HP.

Answer
If you want to use an external hard drive to save your media files to, I'm pretty sure that all hard drive manufacturers make them. they are very easy to use, most are simply plug and play. They install their own drivers when they are plugged in automatically.
Western Digital, Seagate, Toshiba, ect all make them, and they all are very reliable, and easy to use. Not to mention, they are quite inexpensive. A 2 terabyte drive can cost as low as $94.00. This makes them a very good deal. it's best to save all your media files directly to them, after you get one. you can access the files in "My Computer" in Windows platforms. I don't know the formats for Mac or Linux, but I'm sure that they are equally simple.
I hope this helps you out. Good luck, & have fun with your files!

What external portable hard drive is best for my Macbook and Dell desktop PC?

ddkreft88

I regularly switch from these 2 computers . My Simpletech is now giving me problems as it cannot load or read to my Mac so forget that brand. I am choosing between Maxtor, Toshiba or Western Digital. Any pros and cons? Thanks!

Answer
I'm a big fan of Seagate hard drives but that's my preference. I would look at warranties for all the products you are looking at.

Also getting a regular size drive and putting it in an external enclosure will be a cheaper option but the draw back is that it will need it's own power source.

Also with the issue with your simpletech hard drive. I would copy all data off it then reformat it. I bet this brings your drive back to life on your mac. For instructions check out here http://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/partitioning_tiger.html

Be very careful not to format the wrong drive.

Which external hard drive should I buy?

Which one will last me longer, both are about the same price, I just want to know which one would be better for every day use.

Should i buy this:

I am using this for mainly my xbox360 games. Plus some music and video files, thats about it. Not for any work related files.

Answer
I'd go with the Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 500 GB USB 3.0 Ultra-Portable External Hard Drive. It has a 2 year warranty and it is smaller than the 1st one. Cheers!

I was considering a oyen mini portable hard drive. is oyen a good company?

Answer
Oyen is an awesome drive. I have two and I am super impressed with them. They fit in your shirt pocket or purse: it is super quiet and very fast;doesn't heat up much at all in use. I use my personal one for photography, and I know I will never fill them up; they can be partitioned very easily; come with FREE online backup service when your away from your physical HD back up; they are about the size of an iPod,and work off of only one wire on your USB drive. No extra cords to mess with, and very easy and simple software for use. You can read my review of the Oyen 1TB Mini Portable hard drive here http://jimehle.com I give this drive 5 starts out of 5. You can use it for any backup that you may need. Infact I use it for my business computer system...I have four machines that I back up... and find it reliable and easy for my back room gals to use. The best buy and product on the market for the dollar spent.

Recommendations for portable hard drives?

Dubious

I have used USB sticks for everything. Now, I am running out of space on my 16GB one, and since the prices for 32GB and 64GB USB sticks are close to bigger drives, I might as well buy one. USB sticks are small and convenient, but I don't want multiple USB sticks to fiddle around with.

Most prices I've seen online are £60 for 500GB and £80 for 1TB. I might not need 1TB memory, but is it a worthwhile investment?

Does anyone have recommendations for the smallest / cheapest / reliable / fast portable hard drives?

Answer
1TB is quite a lot of space. My recommendation would be, if you don't think you can fill it up now, then get a smaller drive. Hard drive prices are currently inflated due to the floods in Thailand, but once pricing returns to normal, you can expect prices to keep going down. By this time next year, I wouldn't be surprised to see prices down 30% - 50% per GB. Buy what you need now, and upgrade when the need arises (usually for a much lower price). That's true for hard drives, and it's true for pretty much all electronics.

If you want high reliability, I'd recommend you build your own. All you need is a hard drive, and an enclosure. By selecting your own hard drive, you get to cherry-pick the best hard drive you can afford, and pair it with an aesthetically pleasing enclosure.

My recommendation would be a 750GB Western Digital Scorpio Blue. It's a 2.5" laptop hard drive, so the form factor is very portable. It's also very quiet, and very reliable. Western Digital is almost universally regarded as the best current HDD manufacturer. The Scorpio Blue is also reasonably fast (It's WD's mid-range laptop model), and should easily max out a USB 2.0 connection.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Western-Digital-Scorpio-5400rpm-Internal/dp/B003D18DM0/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1321337036&sr=8-3

Pair the HDD with a cheap USB 2.0 enclosure like one of these:
http://www.dealextreme.com/p/2-5-inch-aluminum-sata-hard-disk-enclosure-usb-2-0-port-11914?r=43327236
http://www.dealextreme.com/p/2-5-sata-usb-2-0-hdd-enclosure-with-leather-pouch-black-51124?r=43327236

If you insist on getting a pre-built external hard drive, I'd recommend the Western Digital Elements 500GB portable version. It's a little more expensive per GB than the prices you stated you found online, but is well worth it. I have been using my old 640 GB model for the better part of 4 years without a single problem. The reviews on Amazon are almost all positive.

is portable hard drive runs slower than external hard drive?

Frank

my seagate 700GB external hard drive crashed. i never had any problems when watching movies directly from seagate via my laptop. i wanted to buy a portable hard drive now but a friend told me that it will run slower specially when watching movies directly from portable hard drive. Since they get power from USB, there will be a lag time and will create a frustration. Is this true?

Also which brand should i try now?

Answer
My 2 cents...

Portable hard drives that get power from the USB port are convenient but they can have problems.

Typically to keep the amount of power drawn from the USB port at a minimum, the typical USB powered hard drive used a slower performance hard drive.

In addition, some laptops can experience USB port problems if you have multiple USB devices that draw power from the port at the same time, particularly if you use one of those self-powered USB hub expanders.

As an IT professional, I tell users to get an external hard drive that has an external power source. Generally these are physically bigger and cost LESS per a gigabyte than ultra portable drives. Plus because they are designed to be "static" (not moved), you're less likely to have an accident, as in dropping the ultra portable drive or have a power issue. Plus you can pay a little extra to get a faster drive (one with a faster data access speed and a bigger buffer).

Also the external hard drives use the larger form factor hard drives inside the unit versus the laptop sized drives in the ultra portables - again, less likely to have disk problems.

I recommend looking for drives with 3-5 year warranties if possible. I personally have purchased Western Digital external drives and have been happy with them.

What is the difference between portable and external hard drive?

mastermind

I am looking for a back up hard drive and I'm not sure which one to purchase. I am looking at the Segate GO Portable or a Calvary Preformated External Hardrive. Help?

Answer
The difference between a portable and external hard drive is that a portable hard drive usually doesn't need a power cord for power and an external drive does. Portable drive also may run slower and will have smaller capacity. Depending on your use and if you plan on carrying your data around then you best bet is to go with an external hard drive. If you have an eSATA port on your computer try to find an external drive that supports that feature. This will give you better speed (USB 2.0 is 480Mbps while eSATA is 3 Gbps). If you are using a laptop only and want to back that up then go with a portable drive so you can plug and unplug it easily.

Portable External Hard Drive?

Enchantres

Help me find one, for my needs, please?

Requirements:
Bare minimum hard drive - 500gb. 1TB would be better, but mehh.
Size: relatively small, not extremely heavy or bulky. In other words, portable.
Password protection option.
Relatively fast transfer rate. I do not want to be waiting six hours for a few gb to transfer.
Easy to use, something like drag-and-drop or similar
Back-up software, so I can copy my harddrive contents to it in case of computer crashing emergency.
USB 2.0 powered only, since I don't want to plug into the wall and I don't have a firewire slot.
Price range - up to $150.

I was thinking a Toshiba one, since it might be best compatible with my Toshiba laptop?

Answer
Do you have a Best Buy or similar type of computer store where you can go look at them?

I would recommend looking at them in a store, and being able to talk to a knowledgeable sales person.
They would be better able to help you.
There is so many kinds / styles available, I would want to look at them all, and read the specifications on the box of the hard drive.

As for the back up- if you have much really important stuff on your computer, I would go with an
on-line back up, such as Carbonite.
I have a Carbonite back-up for mine, and it is great!!! It backs up my stuff automatically, every day.
An external hard drive for back up is good, but it still is a hard drive, and thus subject to crashing just like the internal hard drive in your computer.
Chances are slim, but you never know!

Good luck in your searching, and I hope you find a good one that does what you want it to do.....

hi, i would like to have more hard drive space for my laptop to play games such as half life 2, wow.ect... i need a cheap portable hard drive but it needs to work well. thanks...
sorry...i meant external

Answer
Lots of companies sell them, check newegg.com for current prices, or many other retailers such as amazon.

It's like asking the best place to buy eggs. It depends on who has them on sale, and how much the farmer's charge the markets depending on volume, etc.

Beware that just because a drive is labelled "portable" doesn't necessarily mean it is more safe from damage than one labelled "external hard drive".

Check the price and specs of various models, and read reviews posted by owners of the devices.

www.tomshardware.com is my favorite site for evaluating computer parts, but don't stop there.

What is a portable hard drive?

Q. Okay, I may sound ignorant, but what exactly is a portable hard drive? Can they act like a normal hard drive? Do you run an OS on them? Can you install programs on them? How much are they? What's the difference between that and a flash drive?

Answer
A portable hd usually refers to a USB connected harddrive that is use to store data. However, newer systems can boot from USB drives (or CDs depending on your OS) and you can use it to intstall your OS. (Not typical however.)

Your OS usually will treat them like a regular harddrive and you can install programs on them, however you wouldn't normally do this since installing programs will usually add entries to the drive where the operating system is to tell the program how to run.

A flash drive refers to "flash memory" these are chip based drives that have no moving parts. Good to carry files around with you. (refered to as key drives sometimes as you can carry one on your keyring) A portable hard drive is more of an external hard drive and has the same technology as one in your PC. (moving parts - a little more likely to damage.)

A flash drive is usally 256 megabytes to 2 gigabytes. USB hard drives can be 10 gigabytes or larger, up to a terabyte. (1000 gigabytes.)

In both cases, you usually want to have all your OS files and programs local to the machine and keep or backup your data on the portable type drives.

Can I download a Mac App to an external hard drive?

Coolterp3

I want to download Call of Duty 4 for my Mac but I don't want it to take up my RAM, etc. Am I able to download it straight to my external hard drive and when I want to play it, plug the hard drive in and start it up?

Answer
Sorry, but I wanted to do the same thing. It is not possible to INSTALL anything on an external hard drive not running Mac OSX. In order to do this, you will have to download the game (you can download it to your external hard drive), then install it on the Mac's internal hard drive, THEN drag it back over to the external hard drive. That is the only way, unless you can somehow run Mac OSX on the hard drive.
Hope this helps!

Mac disk utility for external hard drive?

Tica

I am supposed to format my new external hard drive before I can use it with my Mac. The instructions tell me I need the Erase option in the Disk Utility but I can't find out how to access the Disk Utility. Can someone help?

Answer
Not sure why you say you are "supposed to format". Why not just use it as is? You can use FAT32 format with Mac, no problem. If it has NTFS format right out of the box, well, yeah, that should be formatted to FAT32, or as it is shown in Disk Utility, "MS-DOS file system". But you don't select the "Partition" tab. For non-Windows operating systems, the term "partition" is used only to designate one of the "divisions" of a physical drive, in the same sense that a room "partition" divides a room into more than one section. You should select the "Erase" tab. Although Windows systems do not list the word "Erase" related to drives, that is the term used in Mac OS to indicate format.

To open Disk Utility, get to the Finder by clicking on the desktop. Then click on "Go" in the menu bar and choose "Utilities". Then click on Disk Utility. Select the drive and then select the "Erase" tab. Choose the format "MS-DOS file system". If you choose the format "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)", you will have a disk that works with Mac or Windows systems with MacDrive installed so just don't do it unless you plan to use the drive only with Macs and you want better reliability than FAT32. You do not need to create small partitions for FAT32 although this idea is common. The Windows XP installer format option says you cannot create a partition size larger than 32GB but that is truly a limit set by that particular format application. Anytime I want to install Windows XP and use FAT32, I boot to a Windows 2000 SP4 CD which does not have this limitation and format from there, and then I restart to the Windows XP CD and install, no problem. There is no partition limit (based on today's available drive sizes) using Apple's Disk Utility.

By the way, Disk Utility can "secure erase" to the level of 35 pass overwrite, see link below.

I can't drag and drop a video from my internal hard drive to my external hard drive, help?

bridgen

I got a wedding video and it's a really big file at about 11 GB. and I want to backup this video by putting this from my PC to my mac, using a 250 GB external hard drive. So I could edit it with iMovie and what not. BUT......it wasn't that simple you see, I dragged the video from my PC's internal hard drive to my external one and it said something along the lines of it doesn't have enough space, when really it has 222 GB free?? I need to share this wedding with my friends and family and they are counting on my, so can someone please tell me what's wrong???? Thank you

Answer
Your external hard drive is probably formatted to the old FAT32 standard which can't handle files larger than 4 GB.
You can check this by displaying the drives's properties in Windows. Most external hard drives come formatted to FAT32 because it can be equally used (reading and writing) by all popular operating systems (Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, etc.)

There are 3 possible solutions:

1) Transmit the video file to the Mac using your home LAN or WLAN. Mac OS X has file sharing options to allow Windows to access it.

2) Reformat the external drive in Windows to NTFS, the current Windows standard. It will take the 11-GB file without problems, and the Mac will be able to read from it. The Mac will not be able to write to the drive without additional NTFS driver software like 'NTFS for Mac' by Paragon or NTFS-3G.

3) Use WinZIP or WinRAR to compress and split the file into a multi-part archive (=split it into several files), copy the parts to the external drive. Copy them to the Mac and use a tool like Keka (free) to unZIP or unRAR them back into a single file.

can I use the external hard drive to work with Video editing?

Rackmanage

My hard drive (C:) is only about 80 GB but I've used it to store mp3.Many programs are installed in this drive also. Therefore, I do not have enough room for using with video editing.
Will getting external hard drive solve this problem for me?

Answer
Yes, but keep in mind that it may slow down the editing process.

The connection between your internal hard drive and the rest of the computer is much faster than a USB connection. Refreshing the video while editing may take longer but it's still doable.

You should consider getting an additional internal hard drive.

Right now you can get a 500GB SATA hard drive for $99.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148264

Also, you can get a $10 - $50 enclosure and turn any internal hard drive into an external hard drive.

I only know of two Seagate does some great hard drives that can be easily converted to USB 2/3 and Thunderbolt through their GoFlex Technology and Lacie makes some really nice Thunderbolt and USB 3 HDDs.

recommended brand for external hard drive?

xigbar

whats a good brand for an external hard drive 500 gig

dont want one that takes to long to transfer flies
dont want one that says 500 but is like 450. which ever has the closest to 500 is good enough for me. thanks!

Answer
All hard drives are a bit less than they say, eg: a 500GB will be 480GB.

Here are some really good suggestions:

-WESTERN DIGITAL WDBABS6400ABK MY PASSPORT AV 640GB
Its 640GB but it will be 610GB so it is close to 500GB and a bit more :)
-WESTERN DIGITAL WDBACY5000ABK MY PASSPORT ESSENTIAL 500GB
500GB but will be 480GB. This HDD has USB3.0 connection for super fast data transfer.
-WESTERN DIGITAL WDBACX7500ABK MY PASSPORT ESSENTIAL SE 750GB
750GB but will be 730GB. Also with USB3.0

Note: 480Mbit/s (USB 2.0) and 5Gbit/sec (USB 3.0)

External hard drive suggestions!!?

I'd like to buy an external hard drive. I'm being lazy, so I'm asking all of you if you've found any good deals or know about the best kind to buy for the least amount of money. Any suggestions and/or advice about this is welcome.

Answer
External hard drives tend to be quite expensive. The cheap way of getting an external hard drive is making your own. What I did was bought an enclosure for about 12 bucks and internal hard drive 500 GB for 54 bucks brand new too. An enclosure is a case where you take an internal hard drive that would normally go inside your computer, and turn it into an external hard drive. It's cheaper this way. I got my products on Ebay. 500 GB external drive cost about 90 bucks while I made mines for less than 70 dollars and the same size. Once you put it together you can plug it in the USB port on your computer and its ready to use.

Here is an example of an enclosure from Ebay
http://cgi.ebay.com/Rocketfish-Hard-Drive-Enclosure-2-5-PATA-EIDE-RF-PHD25-/160458617932?pt=PCC_Drives_Storage_Internal#ht_500wt_671

They have enclosures that can support drives up to 2TB, which is very large.

When Verbatim bought out SmartDisk, they made some changes. I have owned many SmartDisk FireLite disks and have been exceptionally pleased --- so I bought this Verbatim 320GB drive. It's great! It's FAST. It came with both a FireWire cable as well as a USB cable. The USB cable is a Y cable so that additional power can be obtained from a 2nd usb port on your computer, but on my MacBook Pro 17" it isn't necessary --- one USB port runs it just fine. And of course, the FireWire cable powers it perfectly --- no external power supplies necessary. There were only two things which surprised me about this drive. From the photo, I thought the case was metal, just like the SmartDisk FireLites that it replaced, but it is actually silver plastic. The second surprise was how hot the bottom of the drive gets after intense usage. I had the drive sitting on the seat next to me as I was doing very intensive video editing, and when I was done 2 hours later, I picked up the drive to pack it away in my bag and it was very noticeably hot on the bottom. It was a bit hotter than the bottom side of my MacBook Pro. The drive features two dim deep blue lights (one on each side) to indicate that it has power. They don't flash when the drive is accessed, which is good. But the lights don't go out when you eject the drive from your desktop. They only go out when you disconnect the cable. Overall I am VERY pleased with drive and highly recommend it.

i am wondering if it will survive being jostled around in by back pack or not. (it will be off of course) or should i invest in a LaCie "Rugged" hard drive??? (still portable, but designed to take a beating)

Does an External/Portable Hard Disk is faster than a USB Flash Drive?

gethzkie

I have a huge collection of movies at least they are in DVD quality, but my laptop hard disk is getting full so i want to backup or transfer my collections, is it true that an External USB Hard Disk is faster than a USB Flash Drive? in generally...

Answer
yes
If you look at simple stats on buffer to platter transfer rates on hard drives, a typical rate is 780Mbs, and for USB its 480Mbs.

in some testing parameters there might be no diff between both. But yes i think you should go with the external hdd cause even the tranfer rate's are more than usb 2.0
& whether it is usb 2.0 or 3.0 you also get firewire ports in some hard disks and i dnt think usb 3.0 could even compare with it
and ya 1 more thing you need whole new set of pc for usb 3.0
cause the old 2.0 pc do not support usb 3.0

Best cheap, portable Hard drive.?

samusgravi

What is the best portable HDD out there? It needs to be under $100 and in between 120-160GB.

Thanks

Answer
Check NewEgg.Com - I get all my HDD's there. They have great prices and fast shipping.

Things to look at:
1) What type of interface is it? If it's only USB it will be cheaper, but FireWire will be a lot faster and better for running video off the external.
2) What's the drive speed? If you only need it for backup a 5200 RPM should be fine. If you intend to stream video or run programs off the drive you'll want a 7200 RPM
3) What's the brand? You don't need to buy the best of the best, but the really cheap ones are cheap for a reason. Avoid brands that you've never heard of or that you can't find on other sites. Names like Seagate, Western Digital, Maxor, ect are fine.

Here's a Western Digital 160GB My Passport for $75.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136288

Or a Seagate FreeAgent Go 250GB for $77.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148340

And a LaCie Design 320GB for $79.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822154245

All those are pretty good but they are all 5200 RPM and USB only. That won't be a problem unless you need the high-speed access.

This one isn't "portable" but it's really small: it's a Seagate FreeAgent Desk 1TB for $99.99 - that's a ton of space!!
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148356

Lastly, here's all of NewEgg's externals for $100 and under:

In both cases, you usually want to have all your OS files and programs local to the machine and keep or backup your data on the portable type drives.

can i run applications directly from a portable hard drive?

mm09

for example can i play movies directly from the hard drive or do i have to copy the movie files onto the computer first and play it from there.

Answer
You can do almost anything on a portable hard drive. You have to install the program to your portable hard drive, or use portable applications (found at http://portableapps.com/) to ensure that, should the installer save paths in registry keys or configuration files, they point to the right place, and not to a non-existant location on your hard drive where the files used to be.

However, you must make sure that when you want to use a program/file, your hard drive must be connected to your computer for the duration of the use, and that, unless your portable hard drive is plugged in 24/7, it will not be an on-demand, ready to go experience.

Also, USB read/write speeds will be a bottleneck, so I wouldn't recommend running any games off of a hard drive. Playing movies is usually okay because most modern video players buffer the video quite a bit, and therefore allow for a smooth show.

How do I fix my iTunes after it was transferred onto an external hard drive?

DoINeedANi

I transferred all of my songs to my external hard drive. Then I unplugged it for a few days and now it "can't find" my songs so I have to go through and individually locate them. There must be a faster way. Help!
Thank you egeorge but I tried it and it still didn't work. My songs will not come back.
Thanks!

Answer
DoINeedANickname, iTunes can not locate your music because you changed its location from its default folder (C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My documents\My music\iTunes\iTunes Music) to your external HD. You have to open iTunes, click Edit > Preferences > Advanced. In Advanced there is a tab: "General" where it reads "iTunes music folder location", click the "Change" button and a new window will let you browse to select your external HD and the folder in there where you have your music.
From now on you'll have to turn on your external before opening iTunes.
Good Luck!

***************************
After you set your external as your default folder consolidate your library and try again, to consolidate open iTunes, click Advanced and then Consolidate Library.
Here is better explained what you need to do

Can I upload video straight from my Sony HD SR11 to an external hard drive?

Devon R

I'm planning a trip and I really don't want to bring my laptop. Is there anyway I can just upload straight to an external hard drive without a computer?
Also forgot to ask, I don't really care for the AVCHD compressed format and was curious if there was a way to stream from the camera into a different format. I'm almost positive I can't, but I just want to be sure...

Answer
Hi Devon:

Although Anthony's answer was correct in pointing out that the Camcorder's OS (Sony uses a Linux-based "smarts" inside their gear) won't talk directly to a normal external Hard Drive, there are affordable gadgets that will allow you to offload videos and pictures without having to lug around a laptop or desktop PC. (The JVC CU-VD40 ShareStation DVD burner [around $130] is one that JVC designed to mate with their Everio camcorder series -- Sony says you can burn DVD's directly from the SR-11 & SR-13, and JVC's CU-VD3 DVD/BluRay will accept the SR-11's USB 2.0 output, and might be just what you need [it's $180]. I'll look for other Sony-compatible DVD/BluRay burner model #'s and post an Update.)

Speaking of BluRay, if you are shooting in HiDef, you'll need to look for a BluRay (not DVD) burner to handle the AVCHD (H.264 codec) HD files, unless you shoot NTSC Standard Def and transfer your videos via USB or AV cable to a regular DVD burner.

One other easy option you have is to use multiple Sony Memory Sticks (or compatible 3rd-party brands of MemStick Duo -- like Lexar & SanDisk) instead of the built-in Hard Drive to save your videos while travelling. That way you can swap MemSticks or use any one of several models of flash-memory-transfer external hard drives that are designed to eliminate carrying a laptop around for archiving (similar to Panasonic's P2 memory card system for their pro-video camcorder line). You can change the recording option (Hard Drive versus MemStick) in the SR-11's menu.

Hope this helps!
--Dennis C.

UPDATE edit: Thanks for the Additional Info post, Devon. If you use either the regular AV output cable (composite video) or the Component Video output cable, you can playback an SD video stream and record or "capture" into whatever file format (QuickTime, AVI. WMV, etc.) your computer, video recorder, or gadget will handle or create. Or, you can use the USB 2.0 cable to transfer the file & "massage" the file format into a different format using a File Conversion program (search Yahoo!Answers or Yahoo Search, and you'll fine plenty of free or cheap downloads for those). The PDF "Guide" and "Handbook' from Sony cover all the steps for video outputting from the SR-11.

what is a good external hard drive?

i want it mainly to store music, pictures, and video without using the hard drive up on my computer.i want it to have software because i had a wd my book essential edition and it didnt have software so it was kind of confusing. i want from maybe 160gb-320gb and the cheaper the better but probly under 175. also if u dont no any can u give me some sites to compare external hard drives...thanks for the help
i have a laptop so how would i put 2 hdd in??? can i ??
so any recomendations??
i no about rpm speed and stuff like that i just wanna no if anybody has had first hand experience with one and could say get it its great or mine broke and doesnt work so dont get this one

Answer
An external hard drive for storage is just exactly that: a formatted hard drive disk that plugs into your computer and that you can store things on, like one does on a floppy or a cd or flash drive. "Having software" is irrelevant, except that many external hard drives have a disk that will install a program that enables automatic backup and synchronization of folders on your internal hard drive....

Go to www.newegg.com and look for external hard drives. Also consider just buying another hard drive, internal, and slaving it to your current hard drive, or buying another hard drive, and buying an external hard drive enclosure, putting the hard drive into the enclosure. It would be cheaper to just add another internal hard drive, usually, but there are often various "deals" where buying the hard drive and then the enclosure will bring the cost down.

I got an external hard drive when there was a deal on hard drives at Comp USA, 29.95 after rebate for a 200 GB hdd, and then I bought also an external hdd enclosure for like 39.95.....

I've got a 100$ gift card, and want to be able to get more space on my computer and a new game. I was originally looking for a portable hard drive, but this one doesn't say if it is portable. And it really doesn't matter, as long as I just plug it in, install some stuff, and I get more space.

Tell me if it's a good buy, and how it will work.

Answer
For a gift card its perfect...."Includes USB cable, AC adapter and quick-start guide" Means plug in the wall and usb port and voila! Yes it isn't internal so you can take it anywhere.

Portable Hard Drive: Transcend Store Jet 320GB?

Noir

Hey all, I just bought this Portable Hard Drive but I think its kinda hard to understand. I wanted my files to copy in this hard drive and i used copy and past method but i think it is not correct for this hard drive. What i mean is, Inside this Harddrive (Inside my Removable F) there is a soft called StoreJet. And its supposed to be used to transfer files from computer to harddrive but i can't function it properly which is too hard for me to understand O_O. Anyway, I just wanted to transfer my 4GB files, but it took whole 12min..I thought this PHDs are so fast to transfer files but it isnt. Am i doing it wrong? or is it just freaking slow??
(In its quick start guide it says that it transfers 60MB per sec O_O)

Answer
It may just be the hard drive it self. I would suggest getting one of the western digital ones, they transfer a lot quicker.

I am looking for small & inexpensive external hard drives to share a 120 GB video file. It has to be able to work on a Mac or PC.

The smallest I could find was about 250 GB for $45, but if there is something smaller and less expensive, do tell! (I need several to be able to share the 110 GB short film with a number of users.)

Files to big to move to external hard drive?

Scott

My External hard drive has 49.0 GB Free but also has a lot off stuff on it. I want to move 3 video clips with a total of 16.83 GB. Surely there is PLENTY of space for it. The external is set as FAT 32 and i'm sure it needs to be something else and needs re-formatted or something like that but won't that delete EVERYTHING on the external? Including all the old and files which can't be replaced? Should I just wait till Christmas and get a separate External hard drive to avoid the problem?
Thanks :)

What ever you do don't format it without backing it up, it will delete everything.

How to reformat a external hard drive on mac?

Mike

i have a external hard drive that has an icon with a time thingy on it and i think it is connected to time machine for backups but i dont want it to so how can i change it back to normal usb format? i have a mac lion.

Answer
These two questions are unrelated....

"How to reformat a external hard drive on mac?"

and...

"how can i change it back to normal usb format?"

No need to "reformat" a Time Machine drive to stop it from being a Time Machine drive. If you actually do erase it, that won't stop Time Machine from trying to fill the drive with backups. You must do this....
â Open System Preferences > Time Machine.
â Click the switch to change it to "OFF".
â Quit System Preferences.
â In a Finder window, go to the drive that was used for Time Machine, and find a directory called "Data". That's all the backups. If you hate those backups, trash that directory, and empty the trash.

As for "NORMAL USB FORMAT", two things to know:
â USB is the connection type, the hole in the side of the computer.
â format is the file system for a drive volume. For Mac using a large drive, that should be "Mac OS Extended (journaled)" and that is the way any Time Machine drive is formatted, so if you turn off Time Machine, the format is still as it should be.

The only other useful formats for 99% of home computers are....
â NTFS (used with Windows, can be read in Mac OS, but special software must be used to enable saving files to it in Mac OS).
â FAT (various versions) is only for small drives, such as thumb drives, under 64GB.

Can I use a regular external hard drive for a mac?

Julia

I just bought a mac and I want to back it up, but I'm not sure if I can buy a regular external hard drive or do I need to buy one that is specific for mac.

Answer
You can connect any USB drive to your mac, you may need to reformat it so the mac can read and write to it.

To do this launch Disk Utilities (Applications>Utilities folder) and click on the icon for the removable hard drive. Select Erase and set format to Mac OS Extended (Journalled).

Some manufacturers sell specific mac hard drives but these tend to cost more - not worth the difference when all you have to do is reformat it.

What is the difference between potable drive and external hard drive?

maggie

Answer
A portable flash drive is a small USB stick connected to the PC that hold probably up to 64 GB of data.

An external hard disk drive is a hard drive like the one inside your PC except it is a smaller form factor like a notebook one optimized for portable usage. All power and data go to one or two cables depending on maker. These hard disk drives can probably hold up to 2 TB.

Hop this helps!

What is the difference between a Portable/External Hard Drive?

And if I want to back-up the contents on my internal hard drive, which would I need?
Is there certain cables i would need (USB etc) to connect either hard drive to my laptop?

Answer
Portable external hard drives are simply hard drives connected to the main computer by a USB plug. That way you can unplug them and take them with you. If you find a external drive you want, look on the box for package contents. If there is no USB cable listed, then you will need to buy one. Just make sure that the external drive is big enough (disk storage space) to hold all your back up information.

can anyone recommend a good portable hard drive? like the one i'm interested in? i'm looking for a good deal...

Answer
Should be able to,,is just like any storage device. The advert says it comes with software, that is kinda neato for formatting and setting permissions or partitions.
Any GRUB or LILO boot manager can partition a drive or set the MBR to work with another system.
Any DOS partition /command can work also.
That one looks like Plug-N-Play stuff, is handy and not too geeky to make it accept data or whatever.

say if I get a 1TB external hard drive to back up my current drives. I have 2 hard drives on my pc... I want to get a new mother board an cpu etc. I kno that I have to wipe out the main drive of my pc an reinstall windows. so if I move all my programs documents an etc to the external hard drive and install new mobo, will all my programs work they way it did when the mobo and cpu is installed with fresh new windows? meaning will they openin up with out giving me errors? I'm a music producer so I'm mainly talking about fl studio, plugins, and pro tools etc. what do you think?

Answer
A program "installed" into Windows has tentacles down deep within it, and so can't simply be copied from drive to drive. It actually has to be installed...

...that is, unless it's "portable." That's what "portable" apps means: The app can be manually copied into a manually-created folder in the "Program Files" folder, and it will run... even without having far-reaching tentacles.

But the apps you mention... they're so tightly integrated into Windows, once they're installed, that you can't just copy back and forth.

Now, if you "image" drive C: to an external drive, then you can re-deploy that image back to the new hard drive, and it will boot right up, and your apps will work...

...except for one thing: The new drive will be in a new computer, the drivers and other Windows internals for which will not be right. So you'll have a hugely error-infested, crippled, godawful boot-up.

It's a better idea, believe it or not, to just back-up your entire drive C: as files, not as an image. Let's say that the external drive is drive F:, then the ROBOCOPY command to just copy all of C: over to F: would be:

robocopy c: f: /e copy:dat /a-:sh /xj /r:0 /v

It will take some time... maybe hours. Go get coffee or sleep or something.

Then just make sure that you have all of your original software installation CDs or DVDs (or that the downloaded installers were successfully copied over to F:) and that you have all the serial numbers.

Then rebuild the machine; install Windows and make sure that all drivers are working, that all Windows updates are applied, and that you have a pristine version of Windows. That, right there, would be the time to make the one-time set of backup CDs or DVDs so you could restore the system to that point at some point in the future, if you ever needed to.

Then re-install all your software and plugins.

Then copy all your data files and emails (in your user directory and sub-directories) back over onto C:.

At that point, if you think about it, you'll be back in perfect shape...

...and even though it will have seemed like more work to some who would counsel you to use the imaging approach...

...it will, I promise you, not actually be. It will, in fact, be far, far cleaner, overall.

Then, once you've got that all set up, you need to use that nice new external drive for routine imaging and backup. You would image the whole hard drive C: periodically to one partition on the big external drive that's sized so it's about five percent larger than your drive C:; and you would do ongoing synchronizing (or just periodic incremental backups) to another partition that's about five percent larger than your drive C:

That way, if you ever needed to wipe the drive again, as long as all the rest of the hardware was unchanged, you could just restore from the image, then touch-up subsequently updates files from the sychronized or incremental backup.

A third partition on the big external drive would be for archived music and other files... stuff that would add-up and just fill your dive C: in no time.

That's PRECISELY how I do it. I've been in IT for 32 years, and I've never lost a single BYTE of data. Not one. Ever. In all that time.

Hope that helps.
