is portable hard drive runs slower than external hard drive?

Frank

my seagate 700GB external hard drive crashed. i never had any problems when watching movies directly from seagate via my laptop. i wanted to buy a portable hard drive now but a friend told me that it will run slower specially when watching movies directly from portable hard drive. Since they get power from USB, there will be a lag time and will create a frustration. Is this true?

Also which brand should i try now?

Answer
My 2 cents...

Portable hard drives that get power from the USB port are convenient but they can have problems.

Typically to keep the amount of power drawn from the USB port at a minimum, the typical USB powered hard drive used a slower performance hard drive.

In addition, some laptops can experience USB port problems if you have multiple USB devices that draw power from the port at the same time, particularly if you use one of those self-powered USB hub expanders.

As an IT professional, I tell users to get an external hard drive that has an external power source. Generally these are physically bigger and cost LESS per a gigabyte than ultra portable drives. Plus because they are designed to be "static" (not moved), you're less likely to have an accident, as in dropping the ultra portable drive or have a power issue. Plus you can pay a little extra to get a faster drive (one with a faster data access speed and a bigger buffer).

Also the external hard drives use the larger form factor hard drives inside the unit versus the laptop sized drives in the ultra portables - again, less likely to have disk problems.

I recommend looking for drives with 3-5 year warranties if possible. I personally have purchased Western Digital external drives and have been happy with them.

What is the difference between portable and external hard drive?

I am looking for a back up hard drive and I'm not sure which one to purchase. I am looking at the Segate GO Portable or a Calvary Preformated External Hardrive. Help?

Answer
The difference between a portable and external hard drive is that a portable hard drive usually doesn't need a power cord for power and an external drive does. Portable drive also may run slower and will have smaller capacity. Depending on your use and if you plan on carrying your data around then you best bet is to go with an external hard drive. If you have an eSATA port on your computer try to find an external drive that supports that feature. This will give you better speed (USB 2.0 is 480Mbps while eSATA is 3 Gbps). If you are using a laptop only and want to back that up then go with a portable drive so you can plug and unplug it easily.
