These two questions are unrelated....

"How to reformat a external hard drive on mac?"

and...

"how can i change it back to normal usb format?"

No need to "reformat" a Time Machine drive to stop it from being a Time Machine drive. If you actually do erase it, that won't stop Time Machine from trying to fill the drive with backups. You must do this....
â Open System Preferences > Time Machine.
â Click the switch to change it to "OFF".
â Quit System Preferences.
â In a Finder window, go to the drive that was used for Time Machine, and find a directory called "Data". That's all the backups. If you hate those backups, trash that directory, and empty the trash.

As for "NORMAL USB FORMAT", two things to know:
â USB is the connection type, the hole in the side of the computer.
â format is the file system for a drive volume. For Mac using a large drive, that should be "Mac OS Extended (journaled)" and that is the way any Time Machine drive is formatted, so if you turn off Time Machine, the format is still as it should be.

The only other useful formats for 99% of home computers are....
â NTFS (used with Windows, can be read in Mac OS, but special software must be used to enable saving files to it in Mac OS).
â FAT (various versions) is only for small drives, such as thumb drives, under 64GB.

Can I use a regular external hard drive for a mac?

Julia

I just bought a mac and I want to back it up, but I'm not sure if I can buy a regular external hard drive or do I need to buy one that is specific for mac.

Answer
You can connect any USB drive to your mac, you may need to reformat it so the mac can read and write to it.

To do this launch Disk Utilities (Applications>Utilities folder) and click on the icon for the removable hard drive. Select Erase and set format to Mac OS Extended (Journalled).

Some manufacturers sell specific mac hard drives but these tend to cost more - not worth the difference when all you have to do is reformat it.
