I'm really excited for the battlefield 3 beta but my xbox hard drive broke, that's why i'm thinking of using my portable hardrive, a seagate 500gb one but will my xbox get banned?

Answer
Xbox 360 Hard Drive 250GB was so easy to install. The capacity seems to be sufficient, but only time will tell, depending on how quickly it fills up. As far as durability, it is as durable as the game system itself, as it is installed internally. Great price! We got it for $20 off when it went on sale after the holidays and used $85 in gift cards, so I would say for paying only $35 out of pocket, IT IS GREAT!

How do you connect a hard drive to a xbox 360?

Joy

I want to connect my hard drive to the xbox 360 to watch movies but its not connecting. It is already available to connect to other devies but it still won't let me get into portable device on video please help.

Answer
What you can do is actually set up windows media center to wirelessly connect to your computor to watch videos in your video folder without having to lug around a external hard drive from consol to comp and back, go to xbox.com and itll give u instructions on how to do it.

follow the others instructions and see if that works. sometimes it does not which leads to the final option of reformatting the hard drive. reformatting the hard drive will wipe it clean of everything which is something you should consider doing if the other options do not work.

before you reformat make sure you back up your files. if you do not then your files will be wiped completely and you wont be able to get them back. i would suggest you use a hard drive enclosure since it allows you to access just the files like a portable hard drive instead of running it through the operating system. i use a bt-300 by topmicrousa that i would highly suggest you check out.

after you back up your files, reformat the hard drive then recopy the files.

Is it possible to replace a Verbatim portable hard drive a/c adapter?

My sister has a 2TB Verbatim portable hard drive. Unfortunately, the a/c adapter -- 1.5A and 12V -- has broken and can no longer be used. It is possible to get this a/c adapter replaced? The shop she bought it from said they will send it back only if the whole unit is sent back -- hard drive and all. She does not want to do that because the hard drive is working fine and she does not want to lose all her data. It is possible to get this replaced?

Chippy

All weekend I've been trying to solve this. However after lots of frustration I will try my luck and ask you guys.

Basically I'm trying the put video files onto my external hard drive, however when I try it says that two of the files (both being around 7gb) are too large even though there's 50gb free! In the past I've backed up my entire documents folder reaching 44gb so it should work...what's happening?

Thanks

Answer
I'm guessing you never formatted the drive after you bought it, it's probably a FAT32 which won't let you put individual files that go over 4gb onto that drive. You can get around this by first backing all files on that drive up to a different media and formatting it to a NTFS You can then put files much larger onto that drive. The reason the folders you put on that drive in the past didn't give you an error is because those folders were made up of many many smaller files that were under 4gb.

What is the actual capacity of a 750GB portable hard drive?

RT83

I just bought my first portable hard drive so I'm not quite sure how much capacity the software, etc. takes but I'm supposed to have 750GB, but it says total capacity is only 697.7GB. I have a mac and it said I had to reformat the drive before using it. Could that have lessened the capacity? Its a WD My Passport Essential 750GB portable hard drive. It seems like losing 50GB is a lot, so I was just wondering if this was the norm.

Answer
some of the loss could be due to formatting or software on the hard drive but most of what you experience is the result of marketing. You purchased a 750,000,000,000Byte hard drive marketing tells you that is equal to 750GB it isn't because 1GB = 1024MB and 1MB = 1024KB and 1KB = 1024B

so following that math 750,000,000,000B/1024 = 732421875KB or 715255.7MB or 698.5GB

The 800MB( or .8GB) difference is what might be due to the formatting partitions or if there is any packaged software installed

We got a digital camera at Walmart for $69 for my son's birthday, nicer than the one I have : )

Answer
I mostly got the cheap things that I needed because of the recession. I didn't buy a TV , Blu-Ray Player, or a camera just to be practical even though it was really tempting. I didn't really have a best deal but I managed to buy Polo Black ($30), Fallout 3 ($19.99), Entourage Season 5 ($9.99), 1 TB Portable Hard Drive ($59.99), and other things. Walmart disappointed me again. 10 employees and the assistant manager didn't know where the $10 Xbox 360 games. I stood in line for an hour and 15 minutes because it was overcrowded like 500 or 700 shoppers. All the stores that I went to, I always saw people buying three or four big screen LCD Tvs with two Sony Blu-Ray Players. Who really need those for life. I miss going to Circuit City because usually they had cheap things. Overall, my best experience was Best Buy and Guitar Center.

Which is better an Ipad2 or laptop ?

Jennifer

My dad is finally letting me get my own laptop. But I've recently been liking the IPad. I not really interested in all the apps I could get on the IPad. Im just gonna use the internet. And what I need to know is it better than a laptop. And also can you get microscope word. And can you take pictures, and videos on it.

Answer
Here's a little pro/con on the iPad:
Pros:
Apple OS (If you like Apple)
lightweight (1.3 lbs),
thin (.34 inches thick),
Front & Rear Cameras, front is VGA, rear is 720p,
Video output supports up to 1080p (which means you could hook this up to a pocket projector or other monitor),
10 hour battery life (I can't verify),
White & Black color options
Cons:
â¢Apple OS (If you don't like Apple), 1GHz dual-core A5 CPU (A low-end, $299 laptop at Wal Mart usually has at least a 1.7 or better processor, can be up to 2.3 GHz for a low-end $399 computer. So you double the speed and cut the price in half, basically, if you go with a laptop.
â¢512MB RAM, The same low-end laptop at Wal Mart usually has at least 1 GB of RAM, which is double that of the iPad. The $399 laptop can have up to 4 GB of RAM, which is 4 times the RAM of the iPad.
â¢16GB, 32GB, 64GB storage options: Good grief. Your most low-end laptops have at least 320 GB of storage capacity. A good $400 laptop has anywhere between 500 GB and 1 TB (1,000 GB) worth of storage. I have a 5 year old Gateway Tablet PC (look up M280E on Google Images) that has more hard drive space than the iPad, and it even had a stylus setup.
â¢9.7â³ LED display with 1024Ã768 screen resolution at 132ppi: This isn't bad for a tablet, but a netbook (which is about the lowest grade of PC you can get) has about this big of a screen, and it still has better other options. (Storage capacity, RAM, etc.)

The iPad probably has a word processor built-in. (Or it might be available as an app... I don't know.) But it would be a royal pain, I think, to actually type out anything on that small screen. A full-size keyboard is larger than 9 inches to begin with, so to fit the keyboard onto the iPad, they'll have it shrunken down. Trust me, it's a royal pain to use that kind of stuff. (If you've ever had a phone or used a friend's phone that had a touch screen, you understand what I mean.)

To me personally, I think it's a lot easier and a lot better to buy a regular PC laptop from Acer, HP, Dell, etc. and just upgrade what you want. Even the base models have faster and better features than what this iPad seems to have. And you can even buy spare batteries for a laptop. You probably can't do that for an iPad. The same goes for the iPad's internals. You probably can't replace the hard drive, RAM, or other internal components yourself. With a laptop PC, they are made so that you can easily replace the internal components that I mentioned. And there's plenty of online sources to show you how to make the upgrades you want. I highly recommend going out and purchasing a laptop PC. And here's the specs you want to look for:

CPU Speed: Around 2.7-3.0 GHz. That will last you a long time, and you can do a lot more with a good processor. An i3, i5, or i7 processor from Intel are all decent processors. Look for a quad-core rather than a dual-core. Dual core processors were good when they first came out about 10 years ago, but now they're starting to get phased out in favor of the quad (4) core processors.

RAM: 4-16 Gigabytes is what you want to go for. If all you'll do is surf the web you won't need a lot, typically 4 Gigabytes is a common number in decent laptops.

Hard Drive Size: 500 GB to 1 TB (1,000 Gigabytes) are good sizes to look for. They have plenty of space to start with, and you can get a 1 TB external drive for around $125 at Wal Mart if you need more room, or more portable space.

Video Card Capacity/Speed: Now more than ever it's important to consider how fast your computer's monitor can put out information. You don't want to get a laptop that can't play a DVD. (Even low-end ones can, but don't expect to play 3D high-resolution games on it) A "Non-integrated" card is really nice because it can be replaced, but a laptop with a non-integrated card can be very expensive. (upwards of $800 or more.) It's a good idea to have a laptop with an ATI graphics card, or an nvidia graphics card. They're the best cards out there, and even the low-end cards they make are better than the cheap ones in the low-end laptops.

Networking capability: Most laptops have a connection where you can connect an Ethernet cable for line-based networking. However, you'll most likely be using your laptop at school or a public internet place that uses WiFi technology. There are three kinds of WiFi: B,G, and N. You want a laptop capable of using an N network. It's the fastest connection currently available, and if you have an N capability, you most likely have G and B capability as well. (G and B are slower connections. G is the most common in schools and libraries where I'm from in Wisconsin.)

I hope you can understand all that, and I wish you well in finding what you'll need.

Is it possible to download a computer game to a portable hard drive without it being on your computer?

Zach

I want to buy a computer game but it takes a lot of hard drive space so can i buy a portable hard drive to download it on without it taking up my computers hard drive
?

Answer
Yes, but....

Unless your computer and portable drive use the eSATA interface, the USB link will be much slower than the internal disk, possibly impacting the game. Not all games give you a choice of which folder to install to, but most do. You won't be able to take that portable drive to another computer and play games on it, if that was part of your thinking.

A better solution is to buy a bigger internal drive for your computer. That gives you maximum space and effectiveness. Add the second hard drive to the computer, run the new disk manufacturer's disk copy program and swap the drives or just use the new drive as extra space. (Most times this question comes up with the C: drive is already nearly full and needs to be expanded).

If you do go this route, make sure you get the right format drive (IDE or SATA) or you'll be very, very sorry when the new drive doesn't fit.

If there's no available room to add the drive internally, you can easily get an external USB enclosure for < $20

How do I connect my portable hard drive to my Bravia TV?

portable hard drive 1tb on western digital elements se usb 3 0 external portable hard drive 1tb
portable hard drive 1tb image

annelu

I recently brought a 1TB WD Elements portable hard drive hoping to connect it to my Bravia TV and watch files such as avi. For some reason my TV doesn't seem to identify the device. But once I try multiple USBs it does. My friend recommended buying a blu-ray player. Is there another way around this, like having to alter my settings? Thanks in advance.

Answer
I know that a tv's USB 2.0 only supports a handful of video files. I know MP4's work, maybe avchd and h.264 (commonly used in cameras/camcorders). I know months ago I had tried .avi files on our tv's on the sales floor; samsung, sony, lg and had no luck.

As for not recognizing it,and i'm not sure how it's set up, it may not want to recognized a HDD USB device. It may only be flash drives or thumb-drives, whatever you want to call them. What I usually recommend is to get one of those WD TV boxes. Just plug in any USB device and itll recognize it.

http://reviews.cnet.com/portable-video-players-pvps/western-digital-wd-tv/4505-6499_7-33396690.html

# AVI , MKV , MOV , WMV , XviD , H.264 , MPEG-1 , MPEG-2 , MPEG-4
Those are the video file formats on that specific ones. They have newer nicer ones that do quite a bit more, have Web TV junk to stream through it. Some have 1080p support via HDMI, some don't, which affects the price.

I'd probably recommend a thumb drive with small avi file and plug it in, see if it even recognizes that file format. if it doesn't you'll have to convert it to a supported one.

Another question would be is what specific model you have. Not all usb models support video, some are just photos and music. Is your usb on the side or on the back with the other inputs? Generally, the back usb ports are for service updates only whereas the side ones are generally for media and/or servicing. If you toss us a model number we can give you a little more details, as for now I just kind of have to do a spread shot of different issues. Hope it helps.

How would I password protect my external hard drive?

portable hard drive encrypt image
Q. I have an One Touch 4 mini portable hard drive.
I'd like to either put a password on it to protect the entire thing or, better yet, password protect only some of it.
I don't need it encrypted, just to have a password.

How wouold I do this?
Is it possible without a 3rd party program?

Answer
If you look at the documentation, it tells you how you can use DrivePass and MaxtorEncryption to both require a password for access to the drive (you cannot do folders only) and encrypt it's contents. Go the the link below and click "Product Tour" then click on Documents on the right. It has documentation for both Macs and PCs. It's listed under "Device Security."

You don't need a third party program unless password protecting only part of your drive is really what you want. Then you should use Truecrypt to encrypt a folder(s) only. That will also give you plausible deniability by having two passwords on the drive...

I just want to know, because I'll be a freshman college student this upcoming semester and that means i need a portable laptop. Well the HP touchsmart has been getting my attention lately, and i'm really interested in purchasing one soon. Like I want to get it this week, and at office depot it's $799.

Should I wait till August? Would it get any cheaper?

Answer
Cat ...

Prices for technology generally drop over time, but probably not very much by August.

You want to compare apples to apples with desktop pc's and laptops. For example, you can compare the memory, hard-drive space, monitor size, etc, of the HP Touchsmart TX2 that you're interested in with these, to ensure you're getting the best deal:

Hmm...I don't think you can get laptops with floppy drives anymore. You have to buy that seperate from the laptop. But if its gonna be for school then let me suggest a Flash Drive instead. That's what I use for all my school work. Its easy to take to class, to the library and such...just that some flash drives are too small and haha you might misplace. I used to have an HP 14 inch laptop and it worked great. Now, I have a Gateway M-6848 15 inch and it weighs the same as my old HP laptop. My new Gateway also works bery good...the only thing is that you have to get used to the Vista software.

My laptop has 4 GB Memory and has a 250 GB hard drive.
5 in 1 memory card reader, Web Camera, wireless lan, 3 USB ports,...and more. I got mine for $649.99 at Office Depot. Its not on sale anymore though it is now $749.99 although it is a great buy. But again you'll have to get used to Vista.

I have music on my portable hard drive and I want to put it on iTunes so that I can put it on my iPod. How do I do that?

Answer
You could also just set iTunes to search removable devices as well.

Can't be more specific because I don't personally use iTunes, and each version of it is different.

But when You do a search for new files to add to the library You'll have an option to check removable drives or the entire system, make sure the portable hard drive is plugged in at the time.

Good Luck!.

My portable hard drive was lost about 4 days ago, and it had about 4 weeks of non-backed-up data on it, someone who travels on my school bus after I get off must have stolen it. What can I do to try to get it back? I live in Australia, so it it much more likely to get returned that in America. So what can I do?

Answer
I would just ask the person to give it back(if you know they took it). Makesure you didnt leave it in ur pants pocket or something.

I have a macbook from 2006. It no longer gets updates, and I am starting to need something better. I want another mac, but do not want to buy something over $1400 including a mac protection plan. I am not sure whether or not I want a notebook or desktop. I only really want to do word processing and check my email and go on the internet. Please help! Oh, and if it helps i also have an iPad 1.

Answer
An iMac desktop is the best option for you and the usage you described. Since you have a portable (your iPad), you don't need to invest in a laptop. iCloud will allow you to keep both devices synced easily. With a desktop computer you'll be getting the most processing speed, memory, and storage space for your money (as opposed to buying a Macbook Air). I would also recommend that you wait to purchase your new computer. The last release of the iMac was on May 3, 2011. Seeing as the iMac usually upgrades around every nine months, the new iMac should be coming out very, very soon.

Here are the specifications of the iMac.

21.5-inch iMac for $1,199
2.5GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5
1920 x 1080 resolution
4GB (two 2GB) memory
500GB hard drive
AMD Radeon HD 6750M with 512MB

+

AppleCare Protection Plan for $169

The best thing to do is go into an Apple store and talk to a specialist to get a final opinion. Make sure to mention to them that you have a portable device already.

Hope this helps!

I have a 1tb western digital portable hard drive that wont let me copy or add anything from it only view it!!?

rich.96

I have a 1tb western digital portable hard drive that i have been using since december 2011 that was formatted originally to windows but 3 months a go i reformatted it with the help of APPLE to exFAT so it can work with my mac and windows.
BUT a few days a go it all the sudden stopped working!
when i plug my hard drive to my mac and tried opening it it wont let me at all my mac jumps to the desk top
BUT when i plug the hard drive to my windows laptop it lets me view my files and everything but i cant copy them off or add any files..

i know i can reformat it and it will work again but i cant loose the files on it because most of them are very important to me apart from my movies.

PLEASE HELP!

Answer
Because it sounds like both operating systems are unable to properly use the drive, I would guess you have a corrupted structure. The only surefire way to fix this is to reformat (and make sure you are ejecting the drive before removing it). One thing to try would be to see if a Linux computer could read and write to the drive - at least then you could copy the contents somewhere else so you could format the drive. You could install Ubuntu LInux for free through Windows using the Wubi installer (link below).

Other than downloading to a hard drive, what is the most common way to download music to a portable devise? Website suggestions would be great too. Thanks.

Answer
Increasingly it is done to the device itself over a wireless network. I download all of my songs directly to my iPhone or iPad, and it syncs automatically to my other devices. Only my iPod nano need to be plugged into a computer anymore.

Can i carry My external Hard Disk in a domestic flight which contains movies in it?

Phenom

Can i carry My external Hard Disk in a domestic flight which contains latest movies in it? Also has few porn stuff, Games.

Answer
Certainly. If you are taking it in as carry-on just leave it inside the carry-on bag when submitting it through the x-ray.

http://www.tsa.gov/traveler-information/prohibited-items (Check out "Can I bring my.." tool.)
Verbatim from TSA.gov:

Search Results For: external hard drive

Check or Carry-on

Please carefully pack your electronics items, making sure all cords are wrapped and any DVDs, CDs, or cassettes are removed from their devices. While you can pack expensive, fragile electronics items in checked or carry-on bags, we recommend packing them in your carry-on.

Laptop computers, full-size video game consoles, CPAP machines, full-size DVD players, and video cameras that use video cassettes must be removed from their carrying cases and submitted separately for x-ray screening. Small and portable electronic items (iPods, iPads, cell phones, etc.) do not need to be removed from their carrying cases.

For items you wish to carry-on, you should check with the airline to ensure that the item will fit in the overhead bin or underneath the seat of the airplane.

Even if an item is generally permitted, it may be subject to additional screening or not allowed through the checkpoint if it triggers an alarm during the screening process, appears to have been tampered with, or poses other security concerns. The final decision rests with TSA on whether to allow any items on the plane.

How can I sync my Macbook and Mac Mini?

best portable external hard drives for mac image

G.O.A.T.

Hello,

I am looking for an easy way to sync my Macbook and Mac Mini. They both are connected via wireless network, but I am wondering if there is a way to simply click a button and sync the two computers as opposed to using the file sharing capabilities.

Also, I have a portable external hard drive as well. Is ther a program I could install on the portable HDD that would enable syncing? Remember, the program would have to be compatible with OS X.

Thanks!

Answer

How to retrieve files on a WD external hard drive with a mac.?

Brandon

I used a portable hard drive to back up some files from a PC. Now I need to retrieve those files using a mac. when I try to open the hard drive it tells me that it is not readable. How can I make this thing work so that I can get my files.

Answer
Answer for Windows 7 and OS 10.6.8:

The drive volume has errors. Windows doesn't care much about errors. OS X does, so it won't mount. Repair it on the Windows system like this....
-- Right-click the drive volume in "Computer".
-- Choose "Properties".
-- Choose "Tools".
-- At "Error checking", click the "Check Now" button.
-- Put a check mark (tick) for "Automatically fix file system errors".
-- Put a check mark (tick) for "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors".
-- Click the "Start" button.
-- Click to unmount.
-- Wait.

To do this in OS X....
-- Download and install either NTFS-3G or SL-NTFS (latter for OS 10.6.7 or later 64--bit).
-- Restart.
-- Connect the drive. At the alert message, click "Ignore".
-- Open Disk Utility.
-- Select the external volume ("Volume" is the partition name, probably faded appearance).
-- Select the "First Aid" tab.
-- Click the "Repair Disk" button.
-- Wait.
