Other than downloading to a hard drive, what is the most common way to download music to a portable devise? Website suggestions would be great too. Thanks.

Increasingly it is done to the device itself over a wireless network. I download all of my songs directly to my iPhone or iPad, and it syncs automatically to my other devices. Only my iPod nano need to be plugged into a computer anymore.

Certainly. If you are taking it in as carry-on just leave it inside the carry-on bag when submitting it through the x-ray.
