can i put games in this hard drive?

Wolf Ch

i want to store my sims games and spore and stuffs since sims always have a ton of expansion packs and i would love it to be external so it doesn't slow down my macbook. is this one ok? (i asked on the site but i had no answers so i was hoping i could get some here) http://store.apple.com/uk/product/TW883ZM/A/Iomega-500GB-eGo-Portable-Hard-Drive-Mac-Edition?fnode=MTY1NDA0Nw&mco=MTE0Mzk1MzQ

Answer
I played Games from external hard drive and they worked fine. But it will only work for the computer you installed it on. Just make sure the drive letter and path do not change each time you connect it. Any MAC compatible hard drive will do.

I agree, you can go with a cheaper alternative. I used Transcend 160 GB.

can someone give me some info about portable hard drives?

Q. i want to buy one and i have to clue about the prices, capacities or brands available in the market.
i live in canada and i have a sony laptop with an 80 gig of hard drive.

Answer
Hey there, I'll start with capacities as that is the most obvious thing.

The drives (from what I've seen, I just bought one today), come in very varied capacities, from 40GB to 1TB(terabyte - 1000 GB). Which size you buy, depends quite simply on how much you need/want. A good indication is what you have on your computer already - for instance I have 110 GB on my computer and I've been down to my last 5GB for a few months now (I have music and movies on it). So I wanted something definitely more than what came with my computer, and with some extra, so that I can transfer stuff from my computer to the hard drive (to help my computer run faster, XP issue).

The prices, at the moment, are not LARGELY different across sites. I don't know which part of the world you're in, but I'm in the UK, and I wanted between 160GB and 320GB and I was looking at £40 to £50. In the end I went with Amazon, because they had a 250GB for about £46 which I reasoned was pretty good value. Use a price-checking website like pricerunner.com to compare prices. Ebay could also be good, although it seems like the sellers on there are few and far between, and are Shop-sellers using "Buy It Now" so there's less chance of a bargain to be honest.

The brands, are like most electronics these days, numerous, and as far as I know, they're all pretty decent. Still to be safe, opt for names that you know of or trust, or manufacturers that offer good warranty length (I've seen up to 5 years). Some brands that IMHO are good are Lacie, Seagate, Freecom, and Western Digital(the one I bought). Please note, I am not saying these are the ONLY good ones though.

Hope all this helps, and you find something you're happy with!

P.S. You might see some websites call it "desktop" and some call it "portable" hard drives. I find that these are pretty much one and the same, I mean they'll fit in a backpack of some sort right?! And anyways there should be a size and weight description wherever you look, so you have an idea of how big/small it is.

You can install programs onto an external hard drive. But you will only be able to run them from the external hard drive on the same computer you installed them with.

portable hard drive emulator?

(-EVER-lon

so i have a 1tb portable hard drive. and i have the project64 emulator. would it be possible to put the emulator on the portable hard drive and the games on there and then be able to go onto any computer, plug in my hard drive, and start playing games? (Mario, zelda, all that fun stuff ;D)
how would i do that? just transfer all that fun stuff over to the portable hard drive or what?
if you actually know, can you list the steps i would have to do,please!
thanks!

Answer
i have never done it but it should be pretty basic , as long as your pc is capable of running the emulator
I have used an extarnal hdd to copy software to my pc before so it should be the same principle no matter what the software is
you would copy the software files to the pc and install it by running the .exe file and any others needed to run it
once installed the emulator runs like any software , and you could either play the games form the external hd same as playing a movie from it , or sopy to the ps and play them

if the external HDD is formatted in ntsfand it can run software from it , so could run most software from the external hdd the same as from the pc , many external hard drives cannot run software but the ones that have internal one touch backup or similar that run backups from the external with software installed on it can
you would simply install the emulator on the external hdd , run it as usual and play games from it or the pc

I do not condone piracy f games by any means but if you are goung to do it that is up to you

you will need to find any installation instructions for the software online somewhare , google works for that

Would like to purchase/build an external HDD...have some ideas, need more background info, though.?

travis_unt

I was thinking something in the 500GB range with USB and FireWire 400/800, maybe with SATA. I'm currently running a PC, but I have been strongly considering an Apple/Mac as my next machine. I know PC/Mac use different formatting, but I'm not sure exactly what to look for. Any help would be appreciated!

Answer
Should be pretty easy - I'd look around www.newegg.com for external drive cases and then match up an internal hard disk at the size you are looking for.

For an external interface, I might stick with USB 2.0 since you seem to be on both platforms (Macs have Firewire, but many PCs do not). A version of SATA (called eSATA) is the ideal solution, but I don't know that any of the current Macs support that interface. Keep in mind, this is the external interface, your hard disk will most likely be a SATA drive.

Macs can actually read certain formatted PC hard disks (I think FAT32 and NTFS) but I believe there are limitations on getting a Mac to WRITE to an NTFS formatted drive.

If the drive doesn't NEED to be small, then I'd get an external chassis that can hold a 3.5 inch hard disk. You should look at hard disk spindle speeds of 5400 or (better yet) 7200 RPM since the external enclosure can run off a seperate power supply (wall-wort, power brick etc.). You'll see the best performance, get the most space, and optimize the cost versus size.

If you HAVE to have a really small portable drive, then I'd look at a pre-configured 2.5 inch version. I think Seagate has some nice drives that are USB 2.0 only, but are powered directly from the USB port. No power brick needed.

Remember, only in the case where you want to move the drive back and forth between Mac and PC do you need to have the correct formatting. If that's not the case, then just hook it up to whichever machine and re-format to whatever works best - you just won't be able to read the drive using the other platform.

Should I get a MacBook or a Sony VAIO?

chevycobal

I'm getting a new laptop, but I can't decide. I can get a MacBook for $1,000, and I've always wanted a Mac. However, Wal-Mart is offering through it's Site-2-Store a Sony VAIO laptop with Windows 7 and a Blu-ray player for a little over $700. (I already have a BD player, but this would obviously be portable.) Which one should I get?

Answer
Apple MacBook
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002QQ8EKO?tag=dcmb-20

Review:
Pros:

- Unibody enclosure
- Same battery as the MacBook Pro
- Same graphics and processor (low end) of 13" MBP
- Glass multi-touch trackpad
- 250GB Hard Drive (bigger than entry level MBP)
- DDR3 RAM
- LED Backlit Display
- SuperDrive
- New AC Adapter (I just like it better. Basically the same as a MB Air's)
- Snow Leopard
- Price

Cons:

- No backlit keyboard
- Bezel around the display isn't as "refined" and the edge to edge glass on the MBP
- No Firewire. Isn't that big for current products as most things are going USB, but legacy items and high transfer rates of Firewire 800 or sustained throughput of 400 would have been nice.
- Battery is non-removable. Again, could be a big deal for some.
- "Non-slip" bottom is rather slippery and tends to gather crud easily, but then again, it's easy to wipe clean
- While I would surely say that the new case is more pro than con (looks better, doesn't get dirty as easily, fingerprints rub right off) that high gloss is rather easy to scratch.
- Finally, this is more neutral than con, I would have liked to have seen a $50 price drop, putting this machine for students and educators, who make up a sizable chunk of Apple's target demographic, at $899. With everything that has changed on this machine, I can see why it didn't happen.

Overall, I would say that this is an very solid machine. For those looking for the "best overall value" in the notebook line, I say that it would be a toss up for me between this guy and the 2.53 MBP. For most users, this is more than enough machine and would be my pick for them. With the overall features, value, and redesigned exterior (and interior), this is really a great machine.

Review 2: Wow. Okay, I previously had a Sony Vaio that ran Windows Vista. It wasn't a bad computer in any sense, but now that I've owned this Macbook for a day, I can already see that it wasn't a GREAT computer at all! Even after a single day, I can already tell that this Mac has pulled me in, and I will never go back to Windows computers, unless they somehow become more amazing than Apple. But they won't. Once you go Mac, you don't go back ;)

But... anyway. The pros:
1. Start up/shut down. Shut down takes 5 seconds, and start up takes 10-20 seconds. My jaw dropped when I actually saw it happen.
2. The BATTERY. It really will last up to seven hours. Which I need, as I am a college student. If nothing else, get it for the battery life, haha.
3. Ease of use! I know my way around Windows computers quite well, and this was my first Mac, but my gosh, I've caught on quite quickly. Installing & uninstalling "apps" is 1000X easier than programs in Windows. I couldn't believe it was so easy, again, until I saw myself do it. If you happen to lose anything, spotlight will easily find it for you. Similar to the "search" feature in Vista's start menu.
4. The power adapter. It really is a simple magnet. You can pull as hard as you want, and the computer is going nowhere as it detaches.
5. The keyboard, and track pad! And... well, honestly, everything else, haha.

Cons:
1. No SD card slot. But this can easily be fixed by purchasing a SD-USB item. I haven't done so yet, but eh.

Overall, this is definitely a computer you should get. I once thought Apple overpriced its computers, by looking at the technical specs. Now I realize, you really do get what you pay for. Mac is sooo much better! Now I'm a believer :P

external hard drive error?

Raymond

im using an acer aspire 5552 laptop. my external hard drive was working fine till a few hours ago. its a western digital, my passport. it doesn't recognize it in "my computer", and constantly keeps popping up with a window telling me to format the drive. i try and that wont even work. the value of the external hard drive is "disk drive", don't think its so posed to be like that. its like the computer recognizes the drive but wont let me access it. could it possibly be something wrong with my computer? any ideas on how i could fix it?

Answer
try to isolate the problem.
try the drive on a different computer if it works it points to a problem on your laptop. if it doesn't then its either the drive or the cable.
Try switching to a different USB port . if it works then its the port.
Try a different cable if you have one that you know works. if it works then it was the cable.
Also check that the PSU for the external drive (if it has one) is plugged in/turned on.

looking for an external hard-drive?

Jonno51

Im looking for a good value external hard-drive, for under £50 if possible. I've never bought one before, but think im going to need one for a laptop. It doesn't need to be as large as 500gb, but as big as possible would be nice.
Can anyone recommend one?

Answer
An average size would be a 320 GB drive.
Of course, this depends on your need for storage and how much you plan on storing.
If you buy one that is too small, thinking it is big enough at the time, and end up running out of room, you will have to spend more and get a bigger one.
Or....you can archive your older files to CD/DVD, burn them, then delete off the external. There are also cases you can get that allow you to put a standard internal hard drive into a case that becomes an external.
Make sure you have a suitable warrenty in case the drive dies.
And, the ones I've seen are USB. Some come with backup software as well.

External hard drive pics?

Tom

I'm overwhelmed with all the external hard drives there are out there. I did a lot of research too. I found a few external hard drives that looked pretty good, and I want to know which one is the best in your opinion.
1. Western Digital WDXMS1200TN Passport 120 GB USB 2.0 Portable Hard Drive

2. Seagate ST302504FDA1E1-RK FreeAgent Desktop 250 GB USB External Hard Drive

3. LaCie Rugged All-Terrain Hard Disk
Hi-Speed USB 2.0
80GB

Don't worry about the storage capacities, I just want to know which one is the best in reliability, quality, customer support, features, etc...

Thank you for your time and effort to answer this question.
(I will give the best answer 10 points)

Answer
Western digital and seagate are both excellent. Have had a 320gb western digital drive for the last three years and it still runs perfectly.

There is another kind of hard drive that works as a normal external hard drive should but can also connect to your tv via scart . That means, you can download your programs/movies on the pc and then watch them on your tv in comfort. I plan on getting one in the near future.
Heres a link showing an example. Worth considering i think.

Questions about external hard drives?

dopeythech

I have several questions regarding external hard drives:

1. Can you install computer games on them? If so, will the games run normally (will they slow down)?

2. Does iTunes work from the external hard drive?

3. Would it be a good idea to take the majority of my files (excluding those that I use on a regular basis) off of my internal hard drive and put them on an external hard drive? Should I keep them on my internal hard drive as well?

4. What are some good brands for portable external hard drives? Decent prices? Hoping to get something for under $100...

5. I do a lot of writing. Most of memory is old word documents. Would it be a good idea to have an external hard drive for my writing and one for games/music/etc? Or is it just as good to put everything on a single external hard drive?

7. What are the different sizes of external hard drives?

I guess that's it. Thank you very much for taking the time to read my questions!

Answer
hello
My name is Martin K
from
www.builttoordercomputers.com

To answer all your questions briefly, Yes and Hell Yes haha

I'll explain.
This is one of the most common pieces of advise my client's never listen to, So to you , I say, "Good on you, for thinking and taking the initiative.

Regarding Computers Games, Yes you can, install them (although some programs only permit you to install the program on C: Drive, But run the program, if it has an option to choose what drive to install on , do that.
Regarding will the games run normally, Yes they will, (Assuming that the hard drive , that the game is installed on, is connected when you try to run the program., If it's a USB external drive and accidentally not connected, You'll get an error message, saying , something like, cannot find source file, or cannnot find the .exe file etc..
Regarding I'tunes, You can store the data files on an external drive , but i-tunes will need to be install on c: drive. if you have existing data files they can be found in your my Music folder, Look for the folder call "I tunes" and copy it to your external hard drive.
If you find you can't play your itunes media, and this will almost certainly happen.
It's because , you've moved the defualt location, you need to open itunes and under the "Edit" tab, go to "Preferences" the go "advanced" tab.
You will see "Itunes media folder location" the defuault is
C:\Users\Martin\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media

change it to find the files on your external drive.
Regarding Question 3. Yes it's a very good idea to put all your files on your external drive, Now.. the files you use regulary , also back them up on the external, but have a copy on your internal as well , so you can use them. And to go one step better, make a backup of your External Hard drive.
The thing is that When a virus attacks your computer , it generally attacks the system registry, and not your files, (but there are exceptions) so the idea is that, your internal drive has a registry and Operating system, the external is just a Partition with Data, The virus can't exist without a registry.

here's some good reading.

http://www.builttoordercomputers.com/category/viruses-and-worms-explained

Ahhh brands, Don't cheap out here, Remeber your protecting data, Don't buy a cheap piece of rubbish, only to have it crash on you.
I always insist on either Seagate Baracuda, or Western Digital, the size you get is up to they range from 80GB to 1.5TB (1,500GB)
and they are not that much more expensive than the rest.
You should be able to find a seagate or a Western Digital up to 500GB for under $100 Easily. If you can't, Let me know and i'll ship you one.
the others just tend to come back on warranty far too much, in my experience if a product comes back on warranty frequently, It's not worth using, It's just a headache.

RE: Question 5. This is a personal choice, It doesn't really matter whether you seperate your gaming stuff from your office stuff, I personally have 5 TB hard drives, and it's all organised logically, if i had a 5TB Hard drive, i would dump all my data onto the one hard drive, but that's me, Do what you feel is best for you.
Re: Question 7. I've answered this above, 80GB - 1500GB (1.5Tarrabytes) most people don't need more than 160GB but the 500GB models are proving to be more cost effective, More space is better.

Hope this helps,

Xbox 360 is NOT detecting my portable hard drive.?

Ninjazn

I have a portable 250GB Western Digital hard drive, and I had connected it to the Xbox 360 in the past and it worked fine. Today I wanted to watch Pirates of the Caribbean on my Xbox 360, so I transferred the file from my PC to the portable hard drive, but since the file was 9 gigs, the portable device said it couldn't take it. I looked for a solution and did this: File too large for portable device

After I did what that website told me, I was able to put the 9 GB movie on my portable device. However, now when I connect it to my Xbox 360, the console does not detect the portable hard drive. I have turned it on and off, and tried using both the USB ports on the Xbox 360 console. Still no luck. Anyone know how to fix this?
Sorry, here is the link:

Can I use a "My Passport" external hard drive on my Xbox 360?

Awesome Sa

I need some extra space on my hard drive but my Xbox will not let me use my external hard drive. Is there any way I can configure it to work? I don't have a huge understanding of computer jargon, sorry, so basic instructions, please. Thanks!

Answer
The Xbox 360 is compatible with most external hard drives but only allows you to use a maximum of 16 gigabytes regardless of the size of the hard drive. External hard drives also cannot be used until they have been properly formatted. To format your hard drive, connect the device to your PC. You will need to note the drive letter assigned to the device. Then open a command prompt window by typing "Cmd" within the search bar in the Start menu. Enter the following command: format/FS:FAT32 F: You will need to replace "F" with whatever the drive letter is. Formatting your drive may take a few moments. Once the process is complete, your drive is ready to hook up to your Xbox 360.

Attaching external devices to an Xbox 360 is a piece of cake: Simply plug the USB interface on the hard drive into an empty USB port on the console. Next, turn on the Xbox 360, and navigate to the "System Settings" menu under "My Xbox." From there, you need to select the appropriate configuration option for your drive. One option erases all data on the drive before formatting it. The other option configures only a limited amount of space for Xbox 360 use, leaving any data on the drive untouched.

Once your drive is hooked up, use your controller to navigate to the "Media" menu. Scroll down to find the "Portable Device" listing. Opening the device will reveal all files and folders on the hard drive. Though you will not be able to move old saved games to your external hard drive, you will have the option of choosing which location to save to when saving a new game

Answer
As per my opinion i would suggest u to go for Samsung LN37A550 as its very demanding now a days in market than Sony. I have HTC touch and i didn't find any problem till as i have taken it before 4 months from UK.

Samsung LN37A550 has good features as link fantastic color, excellent color reproduction, fantastic design, brilliant display, top-quality features, fantastic hd quality, fantastic installation, outstanding price, outstanding speakers, top-quality user interface, outstanding video quality. You can use the usb port to connect your portable hard drive and play music, movies and pictures from the hard drive to your tv. HD channels are fantastic. Perfect for bedroom or bar area tv. It even has an equalizer for sound.

The site I trust for comparison for TV Reviews and price comparison when it comes to consumer electronics is alaTest. Below are some links...looks like the TV you are considering is highly regarded.

Which external HDD should I buy?

Tom

I'm running out of space on my PC, so I'm wondering which external drive I should buy. I'm on a budget of £140 or less, between 2TB and 3TB. I'm looking for a desktop one, not a portable. I've found two already, links below. The WD one apparently has terrible backup software, and the other one has no reviews, and so I'm unsure if it is any good. Any recommendations of any other HDD's available in the UK in my price range and also any review of the two already mentioned. If any additional information is required I will try and give it, just check back later. Thanks

Answer
First off, if you are buying a backup hard drive - that is not the same as buying backup software.

You can choose to use the "backup" utility in Windows, you can use something like SyncToy (free from M$), you can manually copy files yourself, or even acquire other commercial or free-to-download software. The software that is "free" with almost any hardware device is only there as a promotion, or a 'taste' - hoping to get some folks to upgrade and pay for the full version. Or lately - buy into the company's online backup product.

I have been using desktop drives from Iomega (1TB) , WD ( 0.5, 1, 2 TB), and Seagate ( 0.3, 0.5, 1. 1.5, 2.0, 3.0) TB for a couple of years now. None have failed, some in service as long as 3 years.

I don't know specifics about your two products, because the mfrs. may make modifications when shipping to the other side "of the pond".
Generally, I look at:

Application -- desktop ( not meant to be moved or jostled), portable (more tolerant of jarring movement, and more costly) . *you already selected Desktop. It is good that you have done this much research and thinking.

Size & Speed -- If I need to backup just my computer, then I can pretty much use anything, even if it means I let it run overnight. On the other hand , If I am backing up my home laptop, my son's gaming / homework rig, and my wife's tablet.. then I need something that can grab data a whole lot faster. Size.. I am just making backups, so I should probably not need anything larger than my computer's hard disk.. or it is no longer a "backup", but rather "added storage".

File system compatibility: Do I just need Windows, Is FAT32 good enough, or do I want NTFS, and any other (mac, linux, whatever..) file types supported? Is it easy for me to partition the drive the way I need it?

Warranty/Reliability :-- obviously, the backup nature of the drive implies I may never need to use it, after all - these are just copies of my files. But when I do need it, I certainly want it to work. The length of a warranty is an (imperfect) indication of reliability. A mfr. is not going to offer a 5 year warranty if they know that 5 or 6 % of the drives are going to fail in the first year or two - while you can still find a receipt. That said, it gets more expensive by little bits as you move up from 1 yr, 2, yr, 3 yr, or longer warranties. Reviews on Amazon are another great indicator - but beware of complainers for other companies, happy, positive reviews (advertisements), and the unreliability of our own emotion and frustration. TIP: manually type in the other countries AMAZON sites, or search G* for the sites in other countries.. they may have different reviews, or prices.

.. the other thing I look at is warranty cost / size cost.. When I buy these drives, am I realistically going to replace it 4 or 5 years.. or am I fooling myself into thinking it will be reliable longer? Will I really need to backup 2TB, or can I get away with a 500MB for now, and buy a new drive when the prices come down by half in 2 years.
Or - do I really need to back this stuff up.. and need a very reliable backup.. so maybe I should buy two separate backup drives. I backup working files daily on one drive, then over the weekend, I sync the two backup drives so both have a copy of my files. If I can afford 2 - 1TB drives, will that work out for me in the long run better than a single 3TB drive?

halp. ipod as a portable hard drive for both mac and PC.?

any suggestions?

Mac supports different hard drive format than Windows. Windows supports FAT32 and NTFS while Mac probably different formats.

photoshop fonts and brushes, portable hard drive, and mac?

Q. I use photoshop a lot, which has me use lots of different fonts and brushes. I don't like the thought of my mac losing space because of this. could i put my fonts and brushes on a portable hard drive, and just plug in my hard drive whenever i use photoshop and my downloaded fonts and brushes then?
okay, now i have another question, after i download it and install it, can i delete the folder downloaded? or do i have to keep it?
on my dell laptop, which is the first place i had photoshop, including the fonts that came with the laptop, in total 396. i recently bought photoshop cs5 for my mac since my photoshop on my dell laptop was installed a long time ago (photoshop 7.0) so i just installed it on my mac two, three days ago.

Answer
Update:
You could go far beyond that and still not have a space issue.
Good luck to ya and happy Photoshopping.

Update:
Once you install the font you can delete it. When you click install it makes a copy of the font and places it in your font folder so you no longer need the first one

Side question:
How many fonts do you have approximately?

Don't worry about the space used by fonts and brushes. Fonts are only a few mb at most and brushes are only a few kb.

You have so much storage that it just does not make a difference.

Also what you want to do is not a function built into the Mac os or Photoshop.

You would have to write a custom script that would create a symbolic link to the external directory that contains the fonts and another for the brushes before Photoshop loads.

I just got a new portable 1 TB hard drive...?

Q. but now I can't figure out how to move all my games and applications onto it... I want to put all my stuff onto the hard drive then make it so that when I plug in my hard Drive I can access everything from there...

I want my computer basically free of all clutter but when I plug in the hard drive I can play Sims 2 or Warcraft without having to install the whole program again. I'd really appreat some links or vids on how to do this... another thing that might help is I'm a writer and basically want to backup my whole story... how do I do this?

What is a portable hard drive?

Q. Okay, I may sound ignorant, but what exactly is a portable hard drive? Can they act like a normal hard drive? Do you run an OS on them? Can you install programs on them? How much are they? What's the difference between that and a flash drive?

Answer
A portable hd usually refers to a USB connected harddrive that is use to store data. However, newer systems can boot from USB drives (or CDs depending on your OS) and you can use it to intstall your OS. (Not typical however.)

Your OS usually will treat them like a regular harddrive and you can install programs on them, however you wouldn't normally do this since installing programs will usually add entries to the drive where the operating system is to tell the program how to run.

A flash drive refers to "flash memory" these are chip based drives that have no moving parts. Good to carry files around with you. (refered to as key drives sometimes as you can carry one on your keyring) A portable hard drive is more of an external hard drive and has the same technology as one in your PC. (moving parts - a little more likely to damage.)

A flash drive is usally 256 megabytes to 2 gigabytes. USB hard drives can be 10 gigabytes or larger, up to a terabyte. (1000 gigabytes.)

In both cases, you usually want to have all your OS files and programs local to the machine and keep or backup your data on the portable type drives.

Will this USB - DC Cable work on my External Hard Drive?

I recently got a new External Hard Drive (Listed Below). In order for the Hard Drive to operate, it is required to be plugged into an outlet. This is fine, but keeps me from being 100% mobile. I was looking at getting a USB - DC cable to solve this problem, but I am unsure if it will work for sure and was hoping that maybe someone out there has tried this, or has knowledge of this.

HDD- http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digital-Elements-External-WDBAAU0020HBK-NESN/dp/B002QEBMCI

Cable- http://www.meritline.com/usb-to-dc-35mm-5v-power-cable---p-37035.aspx

Answer
No that cable will not work, 3.5" hard drives require +5 and +12 positive to work, that cable only provides +5V so you will not be able to get the drive to spin up. If you want to be completely mobile you will have to get a 2.5" external drive as those can be bus powered via USB.

external hard drives.....rpm speed vs bus speed?

bastian915

wanting to get an external hard drive for my laptop....looking at different manufactures and wondering if at a fairly good bus speed like in the Firewire 400 connection if there really would be much difference between 5400rpm and 7200rpm. I'm just wondering because the portable bus powered hard drives seem to come with 5400rpm and the desktop versions can go a bit faster.
Hey wizard of OZ thanks for the post....wondering if it would then be worthwhile (since the laptop only has firewire 400) to get a firewire 800 express card for the faster bus speed.

Answer
To start with the drives in external hard drives are the same as you have in a desktop. The difference between 5400rpm and 7200rpm is that the faster you turn the disk platters the faster you get to the data and reduce something called rotational delay which can be most the the time to retrieve data from a drive or write to it. The reason the bus powered drives are slower is that the slower drives take less power. Any external drive is going to be slower than an internal drive because even Firewire is not as fast as an internal bus connnection.
Bottom line it probably does not matter which you get because you should only be using an external drive for backup or moving data via sneaker net. I would suggest that the faster bus is your best bet though.

Western Digital passport portable hard drive with MAC problem?

Q. I put files onto the hard drive from my PC with Windows XP. When I plug it into my MacBook with the latest version of OS X, nothing happens. The light comes on but the hard drive doesnt spin and nothing comes up on the OS X desktop. How do I get this to work?

Answer
The drive is most likely formatted NTFS, which is a proprietary Microsoft format.

You can try using Disk Utility on the Mac to mount it, but even if it works it will be read-only.

If you need to move files back and forth from PC to Mac using this drive, you are better off reformatting it FAT32. Keep in mind though, that FAT32 only supports file sizes up to 4GB.

i am confused what to buy, internal or external hard drive for backup?

Q. i need 1TB hard drive for my data backup and i need an external one but don't know is it better? i am confused someone says that pre-made external is not more reliable because of heating problem and suggest me to buy an internal hard drive for laptop and use an enclosure to make it external as it would be better than ready made external hard drive, someone says that external hard drives are not safe, i am totally confused and don't know what to buy. please tell me which would be more reliable and how, as i need it right now?

Answer
I'd recommend an External drive - although these can often cost a little more and be slower, the pro's as a backup are much better.

- Drive can be moved around or connected to other computers as required
- If your computer is stolen or blows up then your backups are safe
- If you upgrade or reformat your computer then your files can be accessed straight away

what is the best value on a 1TB portable hard drive?

Q. I was considering a oyen mini portable hard drive. is oyen a good company?

Answer
Oyen is an awesome drive. I have two and I am super impressed with them. They fit in your shirt pocket or purse: it is super quiet and very fast;doesn't heat up much at all in use. I use my personal one for photography, and I know I will never fill them up; they can be partitioned very easily; come with FREE online backup service when your away from your physical HD back up; they are about the size of an iPod,and work off of only one wire on your USB drive. No extra cords to mess with, and very easy and simple software for use. You can read my review of the Oyen 1TB Mini Portable hard drive here http://jimehle.com I give this drive 5 starts out of 5. You can use it for any backup that you may need. Infact I use it for my business computer system...I have four machines that I back up... and find it reliable and easy for my back room gals to use. The best buy and product on the market for the dollar spent.

Recommendations for portable hard drives?

Q. I have used USB sticks for everything. Now, I am running out of space on my 16GB one, and since the prices for 32GB and 64GB USB sticks are close to bigger drives, I might as well buy one. USB sticks are small and convenient, but I don't want multiple USB sticks to fiddle around with.

Most prices I've seen online are £60 for 500GB and £80 for 1TB. I might not need 1TB memory, but is it a worthwhile investment?

Does anyone have recommendations for the smallest / cheapest / reliable / fast portable hard drives?

Answer
1TB is quite a lot of space. My recommendation would be, if you don't think you can fill it up now, then get a smaller drive. Hard drive prices are currently inflated due to the floods in Thailand, but once pricing returns to normal, you can expect prices to keep going down. By this time next year, I wouldn't be surprised to see prices down 30% - 50% per GB. Buy what you need now, and upgrade when the need arises (usually for a much lower price). That's true for hard drives, and it's true for pretty much all electronics.

If you want high reliability, I'd recommend you build your own. All you need is a hard drive, and an enclosure. By selecting your own hard drive, you get to cherry-pick the best hard drive you can afford, and pair it with an aesthetically pleasing enclosure.

My recommendation would be a 750GB Western Digital Scorpio Blue. It's a 2.5" laptop hard drive, so the form factor is very portable. It's also very quiet, and very reliable. Western Digital is almost universally regarded as the best current HDD manufacturer. The Scorpio Blue is also reasonably fast (It's WD's mid-range laptop model), and should easily max out a USB 2.0 connection.

Pair the HDD with a cheap USB 2.0 enclosure like one of these:

If you insist on getting a pre-built external hard drive, I'd recommend the Western Digital Elements 500GB portable version. It's a little more expensive per GB than the prices you stated you found online, but is well worth it. I have been using my old 640 GB model for the better part of 4 years without a single problem. The reviews on Amazon are almost all positive.

Help with understanding portable Hard Drives please.?

Q. I desperately need external storage that I can put all my computer files in one place should my computer die or need a fresh re-install.

I currently have over 40GB of files on my computer and the back up for these is on several flash drives with the highest being only a 16GB.

As a result, I have my files all over the place so I need external storage that hold a lot. I don't want to but another flash drive as I can't find one big enough and I'm sick of them all over the place without have yet another one.

As I'm adding to my files all the time I am now looking at external hard drives and portable hard drive but the problem is I don't understand what the differences between the two are and if they just like giant (in storage terms) flash drives or different?

As I don't understand them I wonder if some kind person can answer a few questions for me and in simple terms?

1) What is the difference between an expansion drive and an external hard drive? Are they same but just called different things or do they have specific pluses and minuses?

2) If different what is the differences?

3) Are they like computer hard drives in as much as they can pick up bugs and need to be wiped so that you need a back up storage for your back up storage? I suppose I mean how relibale a back up are they in the real world?

4) Is the storgage on them for real? IE they actually can store 500GM of files?

5) How easy are they to set up and will I need any special equipment to attach one?

6) Are there any better high volume storage devices available?

7) Is there a make that is seen as the most reliable or are they much or a muchness?

Thank you in advance.
To the two who have kindly, thoroughly and simply answered - thank you so much. You are both diamonds.

Now I have to pick juss one for best answer. I want to pick you both!

Answer
1) Expansion drives and EHD's are the same.
2) -
3) As with anything, it can receive a virus. It is very unlikely though, as most viruses target the WINDOWS files, or the registry. They are the most reliable backup solution.
4) It depends on how big your EHD is. For instance, you can buy 80GB, 160GB, 240GB, 320GB, 500GB, 1TB, 2TB, etc.
5) It is simple to set up. All you do is follow the hardware installation wizard that pops up on-screen when you plug it in. There is usually a program by the manufacturer that makes for simple file backup.
6) None that are extremely different.
7) Seagate is a very reliable brand. They are supporting my back up.

Does it exist?: portable dvd player that plays .avi files from USB external hard drive (not flash drive)?

Q. Here are the features i would like, but i cant find a portable dvd player that has them all. I know many people are looking for this same thing, so if you have bought or know of a product that meets these specs, please share.

- plays .avi files from USB external hard drive (NOT FLASH DRIVE) i want to use an external hard drive so that i can have access to my 300+ .avi movies instead of burning them to a disk.
- 8"+ screen (preferably 10"+)
- preferably has a swivel screen (the screen rotates and folds down to save space)
-nice quality image
-preferably video/audio input for gaming systems such as playstation2 slim.

thanks in advance, pope

Answer
man i hate to keep pimping them, but target has an entire laptop for around 300 dollars that i KNOW would do what you need. and it's very tiny and lightweight too, with an 8'inch screen.

i believe it's an asus ieee or some such. they make in both black and white, and linux/windows versions.

wal-mart might have something even cheaper, or newegg.

where can i find portable hard drives?

nothing

and is really good
and that can hold a lot of documents?

i don't need it for music or any thing i just need it for like my poems and stories i write

Answer
Wal-mart sells them. If you don't plan on putting media on it at all, just files, you could buy a 1 or 2 GB flash drive for 5 to 10 dollars. Really any store that has an electronic department will sell them. Also, newegg.com sells them for really good prices. SanDisk and Kingston are some really good brands that i can think of.

how come i connect my portable hard drive in the PS3 but i doesnt not appear?

Leon

Answer
In order for a PS3 to read portable memory (External HDD, Thumbdrive, ETC.) the device must be formatted into the FAT32 format.

To do this, you can insert your portable to device into a Windows PC, open My Computer, and right click the drive. (ex: E:/ F:/ G:/), then select "Format".

Select FAT32 as the format and click "Start".

WARNING: All data on the portable device will be deleted, so make sure to back it up to the PC if you want to keep it, then place it on AFTER the format.

After this, the PS3 will easily read the inserted portable media.
