Do I lose all my files when I install Windows 8?

I am using Windows xp atm and I thought of changing my OS. So I am going for Windows 8. But my question is: will I lose all my files when I re-install the operating system? Or can I choose a specific partition for installing and the other partitions will remain untouched? My windows files are all in Local Disk :C and all my documents, photos, movies, games are in Local Disk :E . So if I install windows 8 on Local Disk C, then I will keep my files from E, right?

Answer
That all depends on how you are installing it.

The best way as always with all Windows is to install it from fresh, don't attempt to "upgrade" as Windows is a bit messy and tends to leave loads of redundant files lying around from the old system.

To install fresh

Firstly open up "My Computer" and take a look at the two partitions - they should have names as well as letters (e.g System (C:) Data (E:) ) if they haven't give them a name - and remember the names - especially the one with the data on!

reset computer with Windows 8 disc in drive and get the BIOS to boot first from the optical drive rather than the hard drive (some BIOS you can do this by pressing F12 for the boot menu, others you need to go in the BIOS and change the boot priority to make the optical drive higher priority than the hard drive, you may even be lucky and already have the optical drive set as highest priority - all depends on how the machine was set up).

Before you start booting ensure you've removed any extra drives, such as usb flash drives portable hard drives, etc...

When you start booting from the disc it will give a message "Press any key to boot from CD" (I know it's a DVD but I don't think MS ever really bothered updating the wording to DVD!)

Press a key to start booting off the DVD.

You get to a point where it will show your hard drive partitions and ask you where you want to install it. Now at this point BE VERY VERY CAREFUL!!! If your not sure get someone who is into IT to watch over you as getting this wrong could wipe out the E drive as well (or just backup your E drive before beginning which is always the recommended and safest way!).

Go into the Drive Options... (Advanced) section of the partition manager and you should see a number of partitions (if you've left any USB sticks/portable hard drives plugged in you will also see these as well as the hard drive).

For example the screen should look something like this

http://cache.gawkerassets.com/assets/images/17/2011/09/windows8partition.jpg

if it looks like this image....
http://www.noteburner.com/images-new/guide/install-windows8/new-partition.jpg
then you need to click Drive Options... (Advanced) in the bottom right

NB the drives wont be shown as C:. or E: etc all you'll see is the drive name so you might have

Drive 0 Partition 1: RECOVERY
Drive 0 Partition 2 : System
Drive 0 Partition 3: Data

(System and Data may be different names depending on what you called your drives, and drive/partition numbers may be different depending on your computer set up - you did remember from the beginning what you called them didn't you?)

Delete the partition that contains Windows (in this example it would be System), but leave Data alone.

If you have a recovery partition you may also want to delete that too - as that contains recovery to re-install XP, and as you've upgraded to Windows 8 you won't be needing that anymore - unless you want to go back to XP at any time and you didn't create the recovery discs, if that is the case leave it where it is.

Now you should have a large section at the bottom that reads

Drive 0 Unallocated Space (again drive 0 may be different number depending on how your computer is set up).

Select that and click Next.

Proceed with installation of Windows 8.

Once in Windows 8 you should see that the data drive is still in tact, although really for full peace of mind I would highly recommend backing all data up rather than attempting this method.

Also any programs/games you have installed on Drive E will not work (unless they were standalone - some emulators are like that) - they will need to be re-installed - this is due to DLL and settings files, and registry entries which are created by the installers. (This is also why computers go slower over time - because all this junk gets left behind every time you uninstall something!)

I dont know which computer to get?

I have a macbook from 2006. It no longer gets updates, and I am starting to need something better. I want another mac, but do not want to buy something over $1400 including a mac protection plan. I am not sure whether or not I want a notebook or desktop. I only really want to do word processing and check my email and go on the internet. Please help! Oh, and if it helps i also have an iPad 1.

Answer
An iMac desktop is the best option for you and the usage you described. Since you have a portable (your iPad), you don't need to invest in a laptop. iCloud will allow you to keep both devices synced easily. With a desktop computer you'll be getting the most processing speed, memory, and storage space for your money (as opposed to buying a Macbook Air). I would also recommend that you wait to purchase your new computer. The last release of the iMac was on May 3, 2011. Seeing as the iMac usually upgrades around every nine months, the new iMac should be coming out very, very soon.

Here are the specifications of the iMac.

21.5-inch iMac for $1,199
2.5GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5
1920 x 1080 resolution
4GB (two 2GB) memory
500GB hard drive
AMD Radeon HD 6750M with 512MB

+

AppleCare Protection Plan for $169

The best thing to do is go into an Apple store and talk to a specialist to get a final opinion. Make sure to mention to them that you have a portable device already.

Hope this helps!

What would be a good affordable laptop?

In a year and a half I am going to college.
I am not very computer literate.
And would prefer not to get into debt buying supplies.
I would like to know what laptops would be best for a college student (a student that has a hard time finding even the simplest stuff on a computer.) with low funds.
My price range: $200 - $600.
I would prefer this laptop to be able to access Wi-Fi.

Answer
As you said that you are a college student so you must need something extremely durable and portable. and as far as brands are concerned the best ones which are durable and highly tested are TOSHIBA and HP.

I will suggest you two most popular laptops of todays market;

1. First one is Toshiba Satellite L755-S5271 with 15.6 inch led display highly popular because of its beautiful finishing and performance.

It has the following specifications:

Intel Core i3-2310M Processor 2.1 GHz, 3MB L3 Cache
4GB DDR3 1333MHz (max 8GB)
640GB (5400 RPM); Serial ATA hard disk drive, 8x SuperMulti DVD drive
15.6" diagonal widescreen TruBrite TFT display at 1366 x 768 native resolution (HD)
Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium; 5 hours, 42 minutes Battery Life

Can I transfer files between my computers with this Toshiba Automatic Backup Portable Hard Drive?

sanfran162

So I'm not GREAT with computers so please bear with me!

Basically I want to purchase a 500gb external hard drive so we can take all our files off of our old laptop and have them ready to be stored on a new computer whenever we get one.

From what I am reading about this product (see the link to walmart.com below), I can't tell if this device just allows you to backup your computer and reload the files back onto that SAME computer only...or if it lets you transfer files from one computer to another.

link to the product being sold at walmart:

Any info is appreciated, Thanks!

Answer
You can transfer files between two with original software which you got when buy your portable hard drive or try to download from your portable hard drive company web site. or you can using Backup4all, GoodSync software.

I use a shared computer and don't want to download anything on to the main drive. I'd like to be able to download it onto a thumb/jump drive that can be removed from computer and leave no trace that messenger is on the computer. Does anyone know if this is posible and how to do it?

Answer
When you connect the flash drive to the computer, the computer should instantly recognize the flash drive and assign a drive letter to it, eg.; D\, E\, F\, G\, H\, etc. then when you do the download, DON'T RUN the installation as the instructions call for you to, instead, SAVE the file, then you will have the chance to save the file to where ever you wish. Choose to save the download to your flash drive. When you run the installation, choose to install to the the flash drive as well, then you will have the download and the installation on the flash drive. Before commiting the installation, examine the address for the proper drive and edit the address for the letter assinged to your flash drive, and remove all of the file names between the 1st backslash and the name of the file. The computer likes to install to the "C\" by default, change it. It should look something like this; (F\openoffice.org2.2), and not like; (C\desktop\program files\openoffice). I made it sound busy but its really easy. I have all of my software, programs, files, doc's etc. on an external drive and can connect it to another computer and have all of my stuff with me.

What to do on a road trip with a friend?

Aliceinwon

my friend and I are going to Kansas City for my birthday next month. Its about a 3 hour drive there so i was wondering if someone could help me on what my friend and i can do to pass the time other then sleep or do something boring. Any suggestions?

Answer
personally, I've never minded road trips. I think they are fun. The longest ride I've been on was 2 days, and 17 hours in one day! but anyways. The best way to pass time is to get a portable dvd player or hook up a tv in the car. watching 1 movie already takes up about 2 hours! If that is not a possibility Try listening to an ipod. . you could play a game with your friend such as "I spy". Or try spotting the letters a-z on road signs.

Honestly road trips are boring, and it is hard to change that.
Even looking out the window passes time.

Hope you have fun!

i got a WD my passport essential se 1TB, portable hard drive.my probable is that i connected it to my ps3 but nothing shows ups. it works fine when i connect it to my laptop. I also got another WD my passport 500g and that works fine on both. what can i do to fix it for i can be able to view it on my ps3.

Answer
Format it as FAT32. If it's not formatted as FAT32, then the PS3 won't read it. Also be sure it's USB 2.0 (NOT 3.0) as the PS3 can only properly read USB 2.0 devices, not 3.0 even if it's 2.0 compliant.

A great tool for FAT32 formatting is Fat32Formatter. Just download, unzip and run, no installation required.

Where on PS3 menu can I find my USB expansion drive?

acgen

I have a seagate expansion portable drive with a load of movies on it that I can connect to my laptop. I would like to view them through my PS3. When I plug it in through the controller USB port I cannot seem to find where I can access the USB. Does anyone know if it's possible?

Answer
the usb drive will always show up on the top iof each sections menu , videos are accessible in that menu , photos in its menu etc.
the ps3 can only read external hard drives thast are formatted in fat32 , if yours is ntsf format the ps3 will not even know it is plugged in so you probably have it formatted for ntsf for pc use

if it were formatted properly the ps3 would show it as a usb drive and then you would press triangle to display the files on it

Hi, is it possible to copy DVDs to a portable hard drive to then be played on TV?

michele53

I will be moving soon and I would like to put all my movies on a hard drive rather than lug everything. I don't know what device to buy, and whether the movies can be viewed on the TV later. Thanks for your help.
Sorry to sound so stupid, but what do I use then to connect the laptop to the TV?

Answer
If your talking about copying disks you will need ripping software like dvd shrink it removes the copy encryption and takes the file size down so it will fit an ordinary dvd(hence) shrink. This is more of a a copying device and i use it to do that them use avs to convert the files for hdd storage, my mate use's this program http://www.winxdvd.com/resource/rip-dvd-to-hard-drive.htm this rips the dvd and lets you choose what file type to store it as. AVI is most popular as it offers great quality for a small file size a typical film will be around 700-900 mb, get V LC media player for playback http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
As for laptop to tv connection that depends on both ideally you will have HDMI ports on both if not maybe your tv has a vga input without knowing the equipment hard to say. It is usually not too hard, just remember if you use anything but hdmi you will need to run a separate audio cable

How will i sync the songs FROM iPod TO my computer?

portable hard drive keeps connecting and disconnecting on ... Toshiba Canvio 1TB USB 3.0/2.0 External Portable Hard Drive- Silver
portable hard drive keeps connecting and disconnecting image
Q. I want to transfer all the songs from my iPod to my computer to my computer. I have no copies of the song in my computer. please help me.

Answer
I had this exact problem, and someone sent me this link. It really does work. Good luck :)

Option 1:
Assuming you're moving files legally between your own computers, check out iPodAgent at http://www.ipodsoft.com/
________________________________
Option 2:
The manual way around this problem is to use the iPod in its alter ego - that of portable computer disk drive. Successfully tested under iTunes for Windows 4.2, 4.5, 4.6, 4.7; Windows XP Home.

- Start with the iPod disconnected from the computer - DON'T CONNECT IPOD YET
- open iTunes
- open iTunes Preferences - this blocks iTunes from seeing an iPod connection; leave the preferences window up and running
- connect the iPod to the computer, wait about 15 seconds before continuing
- open 'My Computer'
- Tools menu, Folder Options, View tab, enable 'show hidden files /folders'
- open iPod icon in My Computer
- open iPod_Control folder
- you should see a folder named music
- drag this folder to somewhere on your computer hard drive
- after the copy completes, right-click the new Music folder on your hard drive and select 'Properties'
- clear the checkmark next to 'Hidden'
- Close that explorer window
- eject iPod from System tray "Safely Remove Hardware" icon. This icon looks like a small gray rectangle with a green arrow floating above it. It's only there when a removable device (like the iPod in this case) is attached to the computer. Right-click & select 'Safely remove..', then click 'Stop' in the next window, OK in the next window, and then Close to complete the ejection.
- disconnect the iPod from the computer

- go back to iTunes, cancel the preferences window
- File menu \ Add folder to Library \ find that Music folder copied over from the iPod

Your iTunes library should be back in action! But wait - there's more!!

Long time forum regular Otto42 has a java script/program that can also retrieve the playlists themselves from the iPod as well. Here are his instructions and a link to the most recent thread discussing this tricky process:

] This is really useful when you're pulling all the songs off of an iPod to put them back into iTunes, because you lost your library or anything along those lines. Come up with your own reason for using it.

] Download this program:
http://otto.homedns.org:8888/iTunes/iPodGetXML.zip
(If you can't download it, try again later. The connection goes up and down a lot.)

] Now, put the iPod into Disk Mode or otherwise access the iPod as a drive. Make sure you can see hidden files, then go to the drive and the iPod_Control folder and find the iTunesDB file. Copy it to your PC.

] Put the copied iTunesDB file in the same directory as this program, then run the program. It'll read the iTunesDB, get all the playlists, and create an XML file for each one. Now just import those XML files into iTunes to recreate the playlists.

] Notes:
- The songs in playlist must already be in the iTunes library. If any one of them isn't there, iTunes throws up an error when you try to import the XML file.
- The song names, artist names, and album names in the library all must be identical as to what the iPod has. If you just copied all the music off the iPod and into iTunes, this will be the case, so it's generally not a big deal. but you'll get an error if it can't find the song in the iTunes library, so it's something to keep in mind.
- It probably won't be able to cope with unusual characters in song names. Sorry, not worth my time to fix. Dealing with unicode is way annoying.
- Smart Playlists get changed into regular playlists. It's *possible* for me to add the smart playlist stuff in there, but it'll take a while to work it all out.

This all from a post on the Apple website, and i hope this helps. Option 2 is what i did, and it works. But follow the directions carefully. If you don't open the itunes preferences, the ipod will b updated..

Why does my macbook pro keep breaking?

First the processor broke, then the motherboard, then the operating system and now it takes ten minutes to start up.

Defective model?

Answer
Here are a couple of things that you could do that will get your laptop up and running better.

Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379

Repair Permissions routine located in Hard Drive> Applications> Utilities> Disk Utility
http://www.gballard.net/macrant/OSX_Permissions.jpg

Resetting the SMC on Mac portables with a battery you can remove

1. Shut down the computer.
2. Disconnect the MagSafe power adapter from the computer, if it's connected.
3. Remove the battery.
4. Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
5. Release the power button.
6. Reconnect the battery and MagSafe power adapter.
7. Press the power button to turn on the computer.

Always run Combo Updates DON'T use Software Update

UPDATE:
As to the computer being a defect if it doesn't run at all or boot up or the screen, keyboard, hard drive errors if none of these are bad. Then it really comes down to the System Software and the update that were installed even a minor update like a 'Apple security updates" have been known to be the culprit.

I have a macbook pro 13 inch that I'm running a minecraft server on for my friend, brothers, and I, how can I speed up the server ans play the game on my laptop? I have a 1TB external hard drive that I was wondering if I could put my server files on and run as a live disc that would give me more computing power. I also was wondering how to fix my server so the I stop getting the [WARNING] Can't keep up! Did the system time change, or is the system overloaded? Any and all help here would be great, however while I pride my self on being rather tech savi and being able to fix almost any computer problem it would be most helpful if you could explain it in a s much detail and as specifically as possible since I'm new to the whole computer programming side of computers. Thanks.
My mac is running a 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor, has 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 of Memory, and is running Mac OS X 10.6.8.

Answer
You're overloading your system. Your system is trying to handle the server computations, your own game and the server-client interactions of four or more people. Offloading your server files to an external disk will probably only hurt your system because you aren't taking the files off your system. Your computer still has to run them, but instead of being on the 5400 RPM hard drive (unless you swapped it or upgraded it) running on your SATA II (or SATA III, doesn't matter, your hard drive is maxing out around 80MB/s regardless) you put it on USB 2.0 (Unless you JUST bought this MacBook Pro, you only have USB 2.0. Even if you have USB 3, remember the bottleneck still isn't your cable, it's your drive. Spinning media is slower than flash media every time.) and you cap your hard drive around 45MB/s. Plus, your computer still has to run those files, but now it can't access them nearly as fast. You don't fix your issue, you just exacerbate it. There's nothing you can do, code-wise, to make your computer faster. Your options are as follows, you can buy a new computer (because with a laptop you can't make many changes) or you can upgrade what two parts Apple will let you touch to make a few marginal speed improvements. Buying a new computer is clearly off the table since the laptop you just bought set you back right around a grand (fair enough, I have a 15" MacBook Pro and it's a great piece, just not as gaming oriented as my desktop).

First things first, you want to upgrade your RAM. You probably have 4GB tops, so we'll max it out. 16GB is the magic number across two sticks for 8GB a piece. Now, because I don't know exactly what model 13" MacBook you have, I'm going to go based on my own which is a late-2011 model. So 16GB is what you are looking for.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220659

That's memory I bought for my own computer. It works great and it does as advertised. Now, let me make something VERY clear. Increasing your RAM DOES NOT increase your computer's speed. It increases your computer's ability to multi-task meaning you can run more programs before you max out your computers physical memory and start to see a slow-down in overall performance. Your computer can spread CPU power a little thinner because programs can store more in the physical memory. Clearly, for the amount of multi-tasking you are doing, this is a good thing. Your only other real viable option for improvement is to upgrade your hard drive to a solid-state drive. Even then, an SSD only increases performance marginally. Access to programs is faster, rendering video would be faster and it will make your computer just run, overall, a touch faster because you are doubling or tripling access times to your drive. Let me put it this way. The Seagate drive in your computer right now will average around 80MB/s Read and about 50MB/s write. It's just slow because most people don't need wicked fast drives in order to surf the web, type essays or run Photoshop. I need a lightning quick drive because I'm rendering full HD video in real time and I need to be able to write as quick as I can read. The solid-state drive I purchased increased my read times to around 200MB/s and my write times to around 150MB/s. Double my read, triple my write. I can load Premiere Pro in half the time on my laptop because it's just quicker on the draw. The program runs worse because the CPU/GPU combo isn't as strong, but that's how it works.

Those are your only two real options for making a difference on your laptop. I'm not going to link you to the drive I bought because it cut my hard drive in half and I bought one for performance. SSD's aren't cheap. A 256GB SSD can run you anywhere from $150 to $300. Unfortunately, this is the only real route you can take. Aside from spending close a grand on some Thunderbolt external drives, you can't really do a whole lot because you don't have much space inside the computer. At the end of the day you are dealing with a laptop, and not just any laptop, but an Apple laptop. Those are the only two parts you can touch without voiding your warranty (technically, but let's see some techs argue that the upgrades I've done weren't for the good of the machine) and it's the only real way to make a performance difference. I wish you luck, but unless you offload either the server or the game onto another dedicated machine, you are pretty much SOL.

How to improve my graphics for Guild Wars 2 on a Mac?

Chris Gree

Hello, I'm using a 15-inch late 2011 Macbook Pro, and I want to play Guild Wars 2 on it. However, I'm having a really difficult time here. I am one who wants my games to look pretty, and unfortunately, GW2 is an extremely demanding game. Does anyone know what I could do that might help me run it on the higher, or possibly even the highest graphics settings?

Please note that I know next to nothing about computers. But I have heard that an external hard drive or an external graphics card may help. I've also tried cleaning out my computer. The only thing installed on it now is Word and Powerpoint, iTunes, and Guild Wars 2. But, still, I have a tremendously difficult time with the game. Any thoughts? Thanks!
Yes, I'm running the Mac beta, that's all that they have available for download as far as I know. I just did a big cleanup though and got rid of GarageBand and all the stuff from my iTunes that I never listen to, so that should help some, especially since GarageBand took up a TON of space. Hopefully this'll go well!

When I played WoW I was able to play it to almost completely maxed out settings- everything on high with the view distance, environment detail, and liquid detail on ultra, and it ran perfectly. Hopefully I'll get good results with GW2 now.

Answer
Are you running the Mac beta version? According to their system requirements it should run well on your MacBook but as it is a beta version you should raise any problems you find directly with the producers of the game.

Answer
I'm not going to read every detail about all these drives you list. I will tell you the facts....

â Inside every drive case is a hard drive ("HDD").
â No drive is "for" Mac. All HDD have the same possibilities with all computers.
â To be sure you get exactly the HDD and case you want, choose them separately.
â Higher rotational speed results in faster data handling / copying / saving, but 10,000 RPM or faster is less reliable, so the best choice is 7,200 RPM.
â A few HDDs are pre-formatted for Mac OS, but 90% are pre-formatted for Windows (NT file system / NTFS).
â Disk Utility in Mac OS can format any large drive as "Mac OS Extended (journaled)" which is the best format for all purposes (Time Macine only works with Mac format) but doesn't work with the default Windows system (3rd-party software can enable Windows to use Mac format).
â You forgot to sat what you have (iMac 2010? MacBook white 2007? Mac Mini 2013? MacBook Pro 2009????)
â The case needs a connection that works with the computer. that could be USB 2.0 (all Macs) or Firewire 400 (select Macs) or USB 3.0 (newer Macs) or Firewire 800 (select newer Macs) or Thunderbolt (newer Macs). BTW, I listed these connection types from slowest to fastest.
â USB 3.0 case is not compatible with USB 2.0 computer port.
â Firewire 400 and 800 are inter-compatible; just get the correct cable and it worksââbut any mix will run at 400 speed.
â Aluminum case is much better for heat dissipation.
â PC geeks typically buy the cheapest plastic USB-only case, so that's what they will recommend.

What is the best portable hard drive to run applications on?

Can I run applications off a portable hard dirve? Which portable hard drives should I buy? I want to run Dreamweaver, Net Objects Fusion or WebPage Maker from a portable hard drive.

Answer
You Can not run all of those programs on a portable drive. Check out http://portableapps.com/ for a great repository of Portable applications you can use.

- you can use any portable drive but you will want one that;
*has enough space [this should not be a problem as you can get USB Sticks fairly cheap nowadays]
*can interface quickly [ you will want USB 2.0 for the fastest load times however the computer must have USB 2.0]

Hope this helps

What is a normal/good price for portable hard drive data recovery?

Man

Got to get data from 3 portable hard drives that stopped working properly and I don't want to get ripped off. All three get power and then blink or beep and the computer doesn't recognize them.

Also if anyone knows of a place in Los Angeles I would really appreciate it.

Answer
It depends on what is wrong with them. I'd guesstimate from $300-1500 a piece from a professional lab. You can compare prices at ontrack, gillware and drivesavers the top 3 data recovery labs and see who comes out cheapest. Generally it will be Gillware though, they also offer free evaluations and have an online estimating tool.

Before you do that you can pull the drives out of their enclosures and try hooking them up directly to a computer or try them in a new enclosure.

How do I transfer a folder worth 45.4 GB through email, dvd burning, or other methods?

portable hard drive 50gb on 50gb hard | eBay
portable hard drive 50gb image

Jack

This folder has movie, music, and programs. Best ways to transfer this folder.

Answer
Forget email - you're 1,000x too large for that.

If you're talking about transferring files between PCs that aren't on the same local network, the ideal method would be BluRay - which can hold 25-50GB per disk. But not too many PCs have BD. A more practical method would be loading a small, portable hard drive with the files and shipping it.

If the PCs are on the same local network, file sharing would be the way to go. That will take over an hour at good network speeds. Trying to move that much data over the internet at a typical upload speed of 1 mbps is going to take roughly 100 hours - shipping will be faster.

Any good FREE storage websites like the cloud?

Anna

I need good FREE storage websites for my music and i have a bunch of music. Over 13GB, and my flashdrive isn't large enough.

Answer
My advice: Buy a 32GB flashdrive. Or a portable hard drive. Uploading and downloading 13GB to "the cloud" will take ages on all but the fastest internet connections. But, if you really want to:
https://www.mediafire.com/upgrade/ - 50GB for free.
https://www.dropbox.com/pricing - up to 18GB for free if you get enough friends to sign up.
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/skydrive/download - 7GB for free, so if you make 2 accounts, it should be enough.

Can I Connect my external hard drive to my wifi router?

portable hard drive buffalo on Buffalo Juststore 500GB USB 2.0 Slimline Portable External Hard Drive ...
portable hard drive buffalo image
Q. I just bought a portable Toshiba external hard drive that i connect to my laptop via USB cable. I noticed that my wifi router had a jack titled USB. So i was wondering if i could somehow hook my hard drive to that and just stream the data to my laptop, and if possible, watch the movies on it on my iDevices. Is it possible?

Answer
Read your router documentation to see if it is possible and if there are restrictions. On routers the USB port may be useless, only usable to share a printer, or can be used for several functions.

As already stated, the Apple Time Capsule (and Apple Airport Extreme) support external USB drives, though it can be limited. A drive configured for Time Machine backups is not very usable for other purposes, and a drive in a Windows format cannot be used for Time Machine backups.

Some Belkin, Buffalo, D-Link, Linksys, and Netgear products in recent years support external USB hard drives. The partitions, formats of use of these drives may be limited. Some Buffalo and D-link routers require each PC to install driver software provided from the manufacturer to access the external USB hard drive, and the driver software may be not be available for all operating systems.

I have the drive connected via USB to my desktop and have file sharing enabled, However when I try to access the drive from my Laptop via my wireless network I get the message:

"Not enough server storage available to process this command"

My Desktop is running XP Pro and my Laptop Vista Home Premium.

In computer terminology what is an ipod and what is a domain?

portable hard drive location 0 on ... Portable External Hard Drive STBU1000100 (Black) ~ External Portable
portable hard drive location 0 image

Answer
The iPod is a combination portable digital media player and hard drive from Apple Computer. The original version was about the size of a deck of playing cards, with a monochrome screen and a 5 gigabyte capacity. iPods can be now be purchased with up to 60 GB of hard drive capacity and color screens capable of playing television shows, videos or movies uploaded from a PC.

Let me elaborate more on this for you:

An iPod can be connected to a computer with either a FireWire or USB port, with many of the latest versions depending upon USB 2.0. iPods have a reputation for being user-friendly. Users navigate with what Apple calls a "touch wheel," a centrally-placed circular disk designed for one-hand operation. Popular iPod features include a calendar, address book, to-do list, alarm clock with sleep timer, games and text reader. A large variety of peripherals exist for the iPod beyond its iconic white ear buds, including modules that allow songs to be broadcast on radio frequencies, docks for digital cameras, digital voice recorders and docking stations that are integrated with stereo systems, powered speakers or even automobile entertainment systems.

And about Domain: A Windows Server domain or Windows NT Domain is a logical group of computers running versions of the Microsoft Windows operating system that share a central directory database. This central database (known as the Active Directory starting with Windows 2000[1]) contains the user accounts and security information for the resources in that domain. Each person who uses computers within a domain receives his or her own unique account, or user name. This account can then be assigned access to resources within the domain.

In a domain, the directory resides on computers that are configured as "domain controllers". A domain controller is a server that manages all security-related aspects of a user and domain interactions, centralising security and administration. A Windows Server domain is normally more suitable for moderately larger businesses and/or organizations.

Windows Workgroups, by contrast, is the other model for grouping computers running Windows in a networking environment which ships with Windows. Workgroup computers are considered to be 'standalone' - i.e. there is no formal membership or authentication process formed by the workgroup. A workgroup does not have servers and clients, and as such, it represents the Peer-to-Peer (or Client-to-Client) networking paradigm, rather than the centralised architecture constituted by Server-Client. Workgroups are considered difficult to manage beyond a dozen clients, and lack single sign on, scalability, resilience/disaster recovery functionality, and many security features. Windows Workgroups are more suitable for small or home-office networks.

A domain does not refer to a single location or specific type of network configuration. The computers in a domain can share physical proximity on a small LAN or they can be located in different parts of the world. As long as they can communicate, their physical position is irrelevant.

The benefits of a domain are

Centralised Administration - Management of the entire domain can be done with access to one database.
Single Logon Process - Access to network resources can be granted through a single logon.
Scalability - Very large networks can be created.
Computers inside an active directory (AD) domain can be assigned into organizational groups or units, thus making system administration much easier as machines in different locations can be differentiated as such. In the original Windows Server Domain system (shipped with Windows NT 3.x/4) machines could only be viewed in two states from the administration tools, 1) computers detected (on the network), and 2) computers that actually belonged to the domain. Active Directory makes it easier for Administrators to manage and deploy network changes and policies (see group policy) to all of the machines connected to the domain.

Computers can connect to a domain easily via LAN or WAN via a VPN connection, users of a domain are able to use enhanced security for their VPN connection due to the support for a certification authority which is gained when a domain is added to a network, and as a result smart cards and digital certificates can be used to confirm identities and protect stored information.

How can I sync my Macbook and Mac Mini?

G.O.A.T.

Hello,

I am looking for an easy way to sync my Macbook and Mac Mini. They both are connected via wireless network, but I am wondering if there is a way to simply click a button and sync the two computers as opposed to using the file sharing capabilities.

Also, I have a portable external hard drive as well. Is ther a program I could install on the portable HDD that would enable syncing? Remember, the program would have to be compatible with OS X.

Thanks!

Answer
.Mac is the easiest thing.
