How do I turn an internal hard drive into a mass storage device?

I had an extra laptop hard drive so I wanted to make it into a portable one, but when I got the kit to make it into an external one and connected it to my computer, nothing happened. Do I need a special software or something? What can I do?

Can I transfer files between my computers with this Toshiba Automatic Backup Portable Hard Drive?

So I'm not GREAT with computers so please bear with me!

Basically I want to purchase a 500gb external hard drive so we can take all our files off of our old laptop and have them ready to be stored on a new computer whenever we get one.

From what I am reading about this product (see the link to walmart.com below), I can't tell if this device just allows you to backup your computer and reload the files back onto that SAME computer only...or if it lets you transfer files from one computer to another.

You can transfer files between two with original software which you got when buy your portable hard drive or try to download from your portable hard drive company web site. or you can using Backup4all, GoodSync software.
