I need a nice, small and reliable hard drive that i can use to transfer video files from my high school film class to home so I can edit them. I don't know how many gbs I need either. I'd like it to be light and to fit in the average backpack. I have USB 2.0 and firewire, Any suggestions?
One movie file is about 40 GB, but I'd also be storing the raw footage

Answer
wait for a usb flash drive to come on sale. try to get an 8GB. you might be able to save some money instead of getting an external hard drive

How big of a portable hard drive do I need to backup my laptop's 250G hard drive?

VirtueVsVi

basically my whole life is on this computer, so if something happens to the hard drive I want to be able to have everything saved.

Thanks for any help!

Answer
Well, external hard drives are so cheap nowadays that you could just get a 250GB+ hard drive and back up everything 1:1. I think Best Buy has a sale of 500GB external drives this week.

How do I connect my portable hard drive to my Bravia TV?

portable hard drives sale on ... Digital WD 500GB My Passport USB 3.0 Portable External Hard Drive
portable hard drives sale image

annelu

I recently brought a 1TB WD Elements portable hard drive hoping to connect it to my Bravia TV and watch files such as avi. For some reason my TV doesn't seem to identify the device. But once I try multiple USBs it does. My friend recommended buying a blu-ray player. Is there another way around this, like having to alter my settings? Thanks in advance.

Answer
I know that a tv's USB 2.0 only supports a handful of video files. I know MP4's work, maybe avchd and h.264 (commonly used in cameras/camcorders). I know months ago I had tried .avi files on our tv's on the sales floor; samsung, sony, lg and had no luck.

As for not recognizing it,and i'm not sure how it's set up, it may not want to recognized a HDD USB device. It may only be flash drives or thumb-drives, whatever you want to call them. What I usually recommend is to get one of those WD TV boxes. Just plug in any USB device and itll recognize it.

http://reviews.cnet.com/portable-video-players-pvps/western-digital-wd-tv/4505-6499_7-33396690.html

# AVI , MKV , MOV , WMV , XviD , H.264 , MPEG-1 , MPEG-2 , MPEG-4
Those are the video file formats on that specific ones. They have newer nicer ones that do quite a bit more, have Web TV junk to stream through it. Some have 1080p support via HDMI, some don't, which affects the price.

I'd probably recommend a thumb drive with small avi file and plug it in, see if it even recognizes that file format. if it doesn't you'll have to convert it to a supported one.

Another question would be is what specific model you have. Not all usb models support video, some are just photos and music. Is your usb on the side or on the back with the other inputs? Generally, the back usb ports are for service updates only whereas the side ones are generally for media and/or servicing. If you toss us a model number we can give you a little more details, as for now I just kind of have to do a spread shot of different issues. Hope it helps.

Can you plug a portable hard drive into a xbox 360 4GB?

R_Flip

So i want a xbox, im looking at a 4gb kinect bundle, its on sale and really cheap.
What are the cons of 4gb?
Does this xbox have the same features as the others? like 250gb and whatever else?
Like wifi? and usb ports?
so can you plug a portable hard drive into it and save things on and and it work the same?
Thanks .

Answer
Yes, you can use a portable hard drive with an XBOX 360, but BEWARE! It won't work the same. There are some disadvantages of choosing this method for storing data.

+ You can use the entire hard drive for files you add on your PC or Mac like movies etc...
- You can only use up to 16 GB space for XBOX 360 Storage. (for games, saves etc etc) on an external (portable) hard drive.

I think you should get an internal hard drive, which is has no limitations for the XBOX 360 storage (the whole HDD is for XBOX 360).
You can only use a geniue Microsoft hard drive specifically designed for XBOX 360 Slim.

(it's hard to make hard drives for older XBOX 360s work and it's impossible to use a regular 2,5" SATA hard drive that are for PCs. Even thought it has a 2,5" SATA bay, it WONT accept a regular HDD, it spins it but it doesn't show up no matter how I format it. It needs a specific firmware, which is only present on Microsoft's HDD for XBOX 360)
So it's a much easier way to just get the official 250 GB HDD. It also has a special enclosure which makes it sliding it perfectly and fits it tight.
So basically it's just a slide-in thing.

So I would suggest you getting the Microsoft 250 GB Hard drive for XBOX 360 Slim. That's what I will do; I also have an XBOX 360 Slim 4 GB. (w/o Kinect)

Why are External Hard Drives cheaper than Internal Hard Drives now?

portable external hard drive 7200 rpm on Discos Duros Ultraporttiles Western Digital Hard Drives | PC Web Zone
portable external hard drive 7200 rpm image

C L

I have seen several 1TB external hard drives with 7200 rpm for under $80 whereas a comparable internal hard drive is well over $100-$200. Usually the reasoning is the rpm is so low (normally around 5400), but that doesn't seem to be the case. You can always just take the HDD out of the external casing and use it as internal, just wondering why the disparity? It used the be the other way around.

Answer
it's about inventory.

There was a large buildup of inventory fairly early on of portable drives so
when the flooding in thailand happened it affected the prices of all drives,
but as there was a larger inventory of portables when the speculators started jacking up prices.

Still 2/3-3/4 of the price increases were simply gouging.

Nothing more, nothing less.

What kind of external drive should I get?

A Bape Fan

Im looking for a portable external drive to store some documents, pictures, and files. Ive seen a lot of good Western Digital passport drives that feature USB 3.0 but many of them are only 5400rpm. Primarily I do lot of video editing and file transferring. What is the best 7200rpm USB 3.0 portable hard drive that I can find?

Answer
You can buy a customized external enclosure and a barebone 7200 rpm hard drive. That will solve your problem.

how can i share my HDs on my home network?

Drew

I have 5 computers, the main one running Vista, one laptop running Windows 8, and three netbooks running Windows 7. I'd like to be able to watch movies and listen to music that I have stored on 3 external hard drives hooked up to my main computer (the Vista one). How can I access these things on all the devices in the household?

Answer
For file sharing I would recommend a dedicated NAS.

If this is out of your budget, many routers support USB for printer sharing or USB storage devices.

You can connect a USB portable hard drive and use it like a NAS (Network Attached Storage) drive. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network-attached_storage You'll have to check your router manual to see if it supports USB storage devices and how it is configured on the router.

The advantage of network attached storage (NAS) is that the data can be accessed (shared) by other devices connected to your network and you don't have to have a dedicated PC running 24/7 to share the drive.

You are not going to get the speed or versatility of a dedicated NAS, but if you have a limited budget it does function.

I personally use three different brands of dedicated NAS devices, two are configured in a raid one configuration for redundancy, you can even have the device email you when a drive is failing, and swap in a replacement without losing a bit of data.

If you're in the market for a NAS, I would highly recommend the Synology line. http://www.synology.com/products/product.php?product_name=DS212j&lang=us By far the best user interface and features. It runs Linux and is highly configurable. It includes a download server, media server, individual user security, and too many other features to list. The Synology DS212j is now under $200 at Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005YW7OLM/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B005YW7OLM&linkCode=as2&tag=excharge-20

You can also set up file sharing,

For this to work you need to set up file sharing on the desktop and share the external USB drives. The methods to do this vary with your OS and version. Here is a video for setting up file sharing on a Win 7 OS. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rP3eR3aNxEw

The desktop PC will need to be left on and connected to your home network, preferably via a 100 Mbps Fast Ethernet connection or Gigabit Ethernet.

Good Luck...

Answer
Getting a large micro SD card is a good thing as long as you want stability and save of power consumption. But getting a large SD card might be a bit more expensive compared with getting a conventional external HDD. You could get a 1TB HDD much cheaper than a SD.

Well, choose wisely. Hope this helps.

What is wrong with my laptop?

Soul

I have an acer travelmate 8472. I bought it recently from someone. It has windows 7 professional. It keeps dumping memory whenever i open any pictures from my memory card. It also doesn't want to run the troubleshooter.
Not sure whether it helps but it has 500gb hard drive, intel core i5, 4gb memory.

Answer
Since you got it from someone, it simply means that that someone got rid of it maybe for the same issues that you are now having.

I don't know if your laptop is still in warranty or not, but I would advice you to call ACER's Call Tech Experts hotline number (1-888-414-3780) for further assistance from the Phone Tech Support Team. Make sure to write down the name of the person who will get your call.

FYI, which ever country your call will be routed to, please be patient & polite to the person who will take your call. After all, you are the one calling them for assistance with whatever issue you are having with your portable computer. Make sure to speak your name clearly (spell it, if need be) & provide all the info needed & asked for. They are trained professionals for handling simple matters, so I believe they should be able to assist you w/ any issue as long as IT IS WITHIN THEIR SCOPE OF SUPPORT. It depends on the company but be cooperative because these phone technicians have a specific handle time to be able to resolve the issue of a caller, so please do not be a jerk. Listen carefully to their instructions & follow it, because IF YOU THINK YOU KNOW MORE, then WHY CALL FOR ASSISTANCE IN THE FIRST PLACE.
If your computer's 1-yr Standard Limited Warranty has ALREADY EXPIRED, then ask them politely & talk to them in a friendly manner, for they are there to listen and PROVIDE YOU BASIC INFORMATION as much as they can.
Best time to call, after midnight Pacific Time.

My suggestion, just return the thing from whomever you got it from and just save up your money for now & then when you have saved up, on Black Friday or for Christmas buy a brand new one that has no issues and you wont need to upgrade in the long run.

Additional info, read on:
I used to work for a big name computer company & usually received a lot of call regarding battery issues.
A brand new computer's battery comes w/ a Standard 1yr Limited Warranty w/c means the expected life time of battery is only 1 year. Same thing goes for the charger.
So, if you don't know how to take care of it, it will die out on you sooner than than expected.

FYI: I always tell my customers, a laptop's battery is similar to a cell phone's. You charge it when it's depleted & you unplug the adapter when it is already fully charge (this will prevent the battery from getting overcharged & extend the life of the battery). So for less hassle, I always advice my customers to just remove the battery if they plan to use the computer for long hours straight (more than 1 hour) and just run it on AC power alone so as not to overcharge it & shorten the battery life.
ONLY USE THE BATTERY FOR PORTABILITY, if you're on a trip, at McDonalds or Starbucks.
If your not after its portability, you can use it just plugged into the wall socket all the time.

For chargers, make sure you don't stretch out the cable too much that the one by the power jack that you plug into the side of the computer gets bent. Make sure this part is always straight or else the copper wires inside will break & soon you'll have the problem of the charger not working anymore like what happened to some of my callers.

Is there a way to install MS Visual Studio Express on a portable hard drive so I can run the program @ work?

Randall

We have Windows 7 at work and I don't have administrator access. I was wondering if I could install on my portable hard drive (not a usb), to practice creating practice c++ programs from work. Does anybody know if and how this can work?

Thanks.

Answer
No I'm afraid not, VSE needs to be installed,it load a large number of DLL's and other tools in to the system directories and modifies the registry. You would be better off using eclipse and gcc which can both be configured to run without being installed.

Can i the MS-DOS startup files onto a portable hard drive when i format my computers drive?

Spencer M

I have windows XP home edition. I'm formatting my hard drive. but i dont have a floppy. and my disc drive can't write onto discs. I need to format my computers hard drive, but i don't want to turn it back on and not have any files to boot off of. ....... This is a horrible explanation. but if you understand this. can you tell me how to get my MS-DOS files for windows XP onto an external drive while i format my computers hard drive.

Answer
There are no DOS files for Windows XP. If you're talking about system startup files then 1) you can't copy any that are currently in use i.e. while booted from them and 2) copying them to an external drive won't necessarily help anything. If you're talking about backing up personal files then just copy them straight over to the external drive, boot from your XP install CD when your done, and proceed with a reformat and reinstall.

If you're wanting to back up ALL data on the drive so you can restore it after a reformat, then you largely defeat the point of reformatting except where you're dealing with a collapsing FAT32 file system.

If none of that makes sense or if I seem to be coming out of nowhere then try to add some more detail to help clarify what you would like to do.

How do you save songs and pics on your xbox 360 hard drive?

portable hard drive not recognized by xbox 360 image

Danny

i dont just want to view them, i want to save them so i dont need to go through my laptop all the time. i DONT have xbox live. AND I WANT TO SAVE THEM!!!!!

Answer
The Xbox 360 console rips audio tracks to the WMA (Microsoft® Windows® Media Audio) format at 192 kbps. Ripping an audio CD with Xbox 360 requires an Xbox 360 Hard Drive.

Please note that existing MP3 and WMA audio files cannot be ripped or otherwise copied to an Xbox 360 Hard Drive, though you can listen to such files from recordable CDs or DVDs or from a connected storage device. For more information, see Use a Portable Audio Player with Xbox 360.

To rip music from a CD to an Xbox 360 Hard Drive

Turn on your Xbox 360 console with no disc in the tray.
Load an audio CD. The Xbox 360 music player will launch and CD playback will begin.
Select Rip CD to view the Rip CD screen. By default, all the tracks on the CD will be selected. If you do not want to copy all the tracks, manually de-select the tracks that you do not want to rip.

When you're ready to generate your audio files, select Rip CD again to begin ripping.
Note

You cannot listen to music while the console is ripping a CD.

The Xbox 360 console comes preloaded with a database of artist and track information for thousands of commercial CDs. If your console is connected to Xbox LIVE, the system will look online for album info if it does not find it locally.

If the system cannot recognize your CD, the console will show you the Edit Album Info screen prior to ripping your disc. Use this screen and your controller to supply details like Album Name, Artist Name, and Genre.

Tip

You can enter information using either a USB keyboard plugged into a controller port or your Xbox 360 controller and the on-screen virtual keyboard.

To proceed with ripping without entering album information, select Save Changes from the Edit Album Info screen. To cancel a rip in progress, press Back (B) at the Ripping CD screen.

You can also enter track titles while a CD is ripping.

To edit track titles while ripping a CD

From the Ripping CD screen, select the track title you want to enter.
From the Edit Song Info screen, enter the details for Song Name, Artist Name, and Genre. (If you entered artist name and genre at the Edit Album Info screen, these fields will be prefilled, but you can also edit them on a song-by-song basis here.)
Further, you can choose to rip an unknown CD now (its title will be "Unknown Album <date/time>") and update its album information later.

To edit album information after a disc has been ripped

From the Media area of the Xbox Dashboard, select Music.
If the Console screen is not displayed, press X and select Console.
Under Albums, select the album with the information you want to update.
Select Edit Album Info, then use your controller to supply Album Name, Artist Name, and Genre. Album names can be up to 39 characters long. When finished, select Save Changes.

To edit individual song titles, repeat Steps 1 and 2, then select the track title you wish to change. From the screen for that track, select Edit Song Info to edit the Song Name, Artist Name, or Genre, then select Save Changes.

Like album names, track names can be up to 39 characters long.

So, my phone is on a soft brick and there's a way to go on download mode and possibly fix it, but my Windows 8 laptop is not recognizing it. What's the problem and what're my solutions?

Answer
WIKIPEDIA ARTICLE BRICKING UNBRICKING
1 Cause and prevention
2 Unbricking
3 Systems
4 Online and mobile services
5 References
Cause and prevention
Bricking a device is usually an unwanted consequence of an attempt to update the device. Many devices have an update procedure that must not be interrupted; if interrupted by a power failure, user intervention, or any other reason the existing firmware may be partially overwritten and unusable. The risk of corruption can be minimized by taking all possible precautions against interruption.
Installing firmware with errors or for a different revision of the hardware, or installing firmware incompetently patched such as DVD firmware that only plays DVDs sold in a particular region can cause bricking.
Devices can also be bricked by malware (malicious software), and sometimes by running software not intentionally harmful but with errors that cause damage.
Some devices include two copies of firmware, one active and the other stored in fixed ROM or writable non-volatile memory and not normally accessible to processes that could corrupt it, and a way to copy the stored firmware over the active version even if corrupt, so that if the active firmware is damaged it can be replaced by the copy and the device will not be bricked. Other devices have minimal "bootloader" firmware, enabled usually by operating a switch or jumper, which does not enable the device to work normally but can reload the main firmware.
[edit] Unbricking
Some devices "bricked" because the contents of their nonvolatile memory are incorrect can be "unbricked" using separate hardware (a debug board) that accesses this memory directly.[2] This is similar to the procedure for loading firmware into a new device when the memory is still empty. This kind of "bricking" and "unbricking" occasionally happens during firmware testing and development. In other cases software and hardware procedures, often complex, have been developed that have a good chance of unbricking the device. There is no general method; each device is different. There are also user-created modifier programs to use on bricked or partially bricked devices to make them functional. Examples include the Wiibrew program BootMii used to fix semi-bricked Nintendo Wii's or ClockworkMod on various Android devices.
[edit] Systems
In principle any device with rewriteable firmware, or certain crucial settings stored into flash or EEPROM memory, can be bricked. Many, but not all, devices with user-updateable firmware have protection against bricking; devices intended to be updated only by official service personnel generally do not.
Amongst devices known to have bricking issues are: older PCs (more recent models often have dual BIOSes or some other form of protection), many mobile phones, handheld game consoles like the PlayStation Portable and Nintendo DS, video game consoles like the Nintendo Wii, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, many SCSI devices and some lines of hard disk drives and routers.[citation needed]
At least some older consumer market router models can become unresponsive when the user tries to define a subnet mask that does not contain one contiguous run of 1's and then 0's. If even a single bit is set so that it breaks one of the runs, the router may become bricked, unresponsive to any standard troubleshooting or resolving procedures listed in the manual. Unbricking the router may require opening the case, shorting some jumper pins on the board, then connecting the router by the USB cable to an old PC with USB 1.1 hardware, running a special DOS level program supplied by the manufacturer, and powering the router up. This procedure will flash the router to factory settings and original firmware.[citation needed]
Electric cars such as the Tesla Roadster can brick if the battery is completely discharged. [3]
Sometimes an interrupted flash upgrade of a PC motherboard will brick the board, for example, due to a power outage (or user impatience) during the upgrade process. It is sometimes possible to unbrick such a motherboard, by scavenging a similar but otherwise broken board for a BIOS chip, in the hopes that the BIOS will work even halfway, far enough to boot from floppy. Then it will be possible to retry the flash process. Sometimes it is possible to boot from floppy, then swap the old presumably dead BIOS chip in and reflash it.[citation needed]
[edit] Online and mobile services
Many newer systems capable of accessing online services (such as the Xbox, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and iPhone) have internal hardware-based unique identifiers, allowing individual systems to be tracked over a network and banned from accessing certain online services. Such systems usually continue to operate for purposes unrelated to the online service, but they are often considered "bricked" by users of the online service.

Hey,guys I'm having a troubling issue on deciding which Mac I should get. It's time to retire my 2008 Macbook and move onto a newer model. The 11 inch and 13 inch Macbook air and pro are both the 2011 models.

The specs for the Macbook air 11 inch:
Intel core i5 Processor 1.6GHz
4GB DDR3 RAM
128GB Solid-State Hard Drive
Intel HD 3000 graphics

Macbook pro 2011
2.3GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 processor
320 GB Hard Drive, 8x DVD/CD SuperDrive, 4 GB DDR3 RAM, Precision aluminum unibody
13.3 inch LED-backlit display, 1280-by-800 resolution
Intel HD Graphics 3000 with 384MB of DDR3 SDRAM shared with main memory

These are both in the entry line of 750.I'd prefer the Air because of the superb Ultra portability, but the Macbook pro in aspects of performance. And please,no responses that are in aspects being bias towards macs.
Thanks.

Answer
Judging by your picture it seems you like to game. It looks like you might need more space on the computer, unless you want to get an external hard drive. (Unless this one is for video editing and such.) The Macbook Pro 2011 seems like it processes faster. Look at what you need in a computer and go from there. Since I game I knew I needed a computer with a huge hard drive and multiple gigs of ram. (1TB ,12G DDR3 Ram). Also look into video-cards.

save files to external hard drive on Mac?

Tiggs

i have a macbook air 2011, and it only has a 64gb hard drive... i have 2x 1tb drives, connected to my router, and i wanted to know how to make my programs and files etc, automatically save onto the external hard drive? and iam using mac.... thanks!
ok i have found my macintosh hd and i have used 47gb... but time machine has an error... but i found the external hard drive on 'Finder' and dragged my mac hd into it... but it hasn't worked... plus, i thought time machine backed it up... so all of the programs would stay on my macbook air and be copied onto the external hd... also... macbook airs are so good... i can run COD 4 on FULL graphics, with basically no lag...!! zoo good

Answer
First, hope you're enjoying the new Air, I'll be getting one as soon as finances permit :-)

You'll have an app called TimeMachine included in the OSX Lion.

Here is what it does (taken from the Apple site, to save me writing my version!)

"Time Machine works with your Mac and an external hard drive (sold separately) or Time Capsule. Connect the drive, assign it to Time Machine, and start enjoying some peace of mind. Time Machine automatically backs up your entire Mac, including system files, applications, accounts, preferences, music, photos, movies, and documents. But what makes Time Machine different from other backup applications is that it not only keeps a spare copy of every file, it remembers how your system looked on any given day â so you can revisit your Mac as it appeared in the past."

Any MAC problems or queries, a good source of knowledge is often http://forums.macrumors.com/

Hi that depends on how old your laptop is more than anything as it will be controlled by it's processor and available ram.

portable hard drive 2tb powered usb image

Krystel Za

I just bought my first Portable HDD (Seagate Expansion 2TB) and I was wondering if I had to keep in plugged into a wall all the time. If I wanted to use it on another computer would I need to plug it in or can I use it sort of like a flash drive? Or if I wanted to plug it into a portable mini TV or something like that.
How do you know if its a 3.5 inch or a 2.5 inch?

Answer
Only small, 2.5 inch external hard drives draw power directly from the USB port. No external power is necessary for those.

All big, 3.5 inch external hard drives would require a power adapter.

Should I purchase an external hard drive or a portable hard drive?

me

Which one is going to be the best cost wise and usage wise. I have a lap top and want to mirror image my drive. I want to get a 2TB for memory as I am scanning pictures and stuff on to my drive and currently don't have enough memory to complete everything I want to scan.

Answer
In my personal experience, portables have been more reliable. This doesn't mean that they actually are, it's just my opinion. But your biggest factor of the difference between the 2 is usually cost. Externals tend to be cheaper. If I were in your shoes, I would purchase the portable. They are lighter, and power just fine via USB. But you could also consider going external because you use a laptop. I would assume there would be more power drain on the laptop with a portable. And at the same rate if you got an external, you would have to be near an outlet anyway. So just weigh your choices and decide from there.

How do I copy my files to an external hard drive when I cant even turn on my computer?

My old computer has a virus on it and it restarts itself everytime I turn it on, theres no way for me to get to my desktop, safe mode doesnt even work. How can I copy my old files to a portable hard drive before I reinstall Vista? THanks

Answer
Desktop or laptop (or netbook) - http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0285941

Connect it to another computer 9that has a GOOD anti-virus program running) and copy the files. Don't be surprised if the anti-virus program doesn't let you though - your files could be infected. (What do you do then? Not much if you don't have a virus-free backup of your files.)

Q. I already made a system repair DVD for my laptop. Is there a way to backup windows 7 and a computer's hard drive completely so if something goes wrong I can just load it from a portable hard drive or DVD that it's burned to? If I can do this what's the easiest way to do it in windows 7?
My friend told me it's easy to do this but I'm not sure how to do it?

Answer
Just backed up my Computer using "MyPCBackup" - it was so simple, now I never have to worry about losing my files again. Check it out!

Why does my macbook open my portable hard drive as READ ONLY?

Loola

i have a "Western Digital my passport" portable hard drive...when i connect it to a PC i can read the documents on it AND i can add files to it, but on my macbook pro it wont let me do that! i can only copy files from the disk but not put any others on it! is there some setting i can change so i could do both..read and write?

Answer
In your Applications > Utilities folder is a program called Disk Utility

Select your external drive and click Repair Disk (note any errors) and then Repair Permissions.

If Disk Utility reports errors it can't fix, you need to quit and grab your files off the external drive, then head back to Disk Utility and format the external FAT (for Windows and Mac) not HFS+ thats' for Mac only.

All should be well.

I'm really excited for the battlefield 3 beta but my xbox hard drive broke, that's why i'm thinking of using my portable hardrive, a seagate 500gb one but will my xbox get banned?

Answer
Xbox 360 Hard Drive 250GB was so easy to install. The capacity seems to be sufficient, but only time will tell, depending on how quickly it fills up. As far as durability, it is as durable as the game system itself, as it is installed internally. Great price! We got it for $20 off when it went on sale after the holidays and used $85 in gift cards, so I would say for paying only $35 out of pocket, IT IS GREAT!

Can a portable hard drive save XBox 360 games?

spider_lad

I wanna add more memory to my Xbox 360. Can I install games from discs onto a portable hard drive connected to my Xbox through the USB port.

NOTE: I'm not going to put Xbox Live stuff on the portable hard drive. I only want to use it to install games from discs.

Answer
Not possible. The 360 can only stream media like music and movies from an external drive through a USB connection. It cannot store game saves or content on it.

Linux for PS3?

Can somebody give me a step by step guide THEMSELVES NOT A LINK on how to install Linux for PS3. I already have the partition and bootloader, but I get stuck after that. I think the problem is my DVD software ( SONIC ).

Answer
Things needed:

1. An USB flash drive or a Memory Card (PS3 can read only SD/miniSD Memory Card, Memory Stick PRO (Duo) and CompactFlash). Or, as an alternative, you can use a portable hard disk with FAT32 filesystem on it.

2. An USB keyboard and mouse attached to your PS3.

3. Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon) PS3 ISO image, which you can always download from Softpedia. You will need to burn this ISO image on a blank CD with your favorite CD/DVD burning tool.

You will need to partition the PS3 hard drive, otherwise you will not be able to install Ubuntu. Power on your PS3, Log in and go to "Settings -> System Settings", scroll down until you find the "Format Utility", press X on it and go to "Format Hard Disk" (last option). You'll be asked if you want to format your hard disk, so press "Yes" and then you must choose a partition setting for the hard drive. Select the "Custom" option, then select "Allot 10GB to the Other OS" entry and do a "Quick Format". When it's done, reboot your PS3.

Create a folder, on your USB stick (drive),
called PS3, and inside this folder create another one called OTHEROS. Put the otheros.bld (otheros.bld for PlayStation 3) file in the OTHEROS folder. Now, go to "Settings -> System Settings -> Install Other Os" and hit X to detect and downloading Linux!

UBUNTU TIPS AND TRICKS

Ubuntu 7.10 on PS3
- Installation guide and first impressions
By: Marius Nestor, Linux Editor

Ubuntu 7.10 on PS3

Today, you will learn how to install Ubuntu Gutsy (as a second operating system) on your PlayStation 3 gaming console. For those of you who think for a second (and who are scared) that this will replace their PS3 operating system, well you guys are wrong, because this will NOT erase your PlayStation 3 native operating system (called XMB) and it will run as an alternative OS on your PS3 console. Ready? Are you excited? Let's go!

Prepare your PlayStation 3 for Ubuntu:

You will need to partition the PS3 hard drive, otherwise you will not be able to install Ubuntu. Power on your PS3, Log in and go to "Settings -> System Settings", scroll down until you find the "Format Utility", press X on it and go to "Format Hard Disk" (last option). You'll be asked if you want to format your hard disk, so press "Yes" and then you must choose a partition setting for the hard drive. Select the "Custom" option, then select "Allot 10GB to the Other OS" entry and do a "Quick Format". When it's done, reboot your PS3.

The KBoot installation:

As I don't have an USB flash drive, I've used an external hard drive for this operation, and it worked like a charm. Create a folder, on your USB stick (drive),
called PS3, and inside this folder create another one called OTHEROS. Put the otheros.bld (otheros.bld for PlayStation 3) file in the OTHEROS folder. Now, go to "Settings -> System Settings -> Install Other Os" and hit X to detect and install KBoot.

Go to "Settings -> System Settings -> Default System" (press X) and select "Other OS". You'll be asked if you want to quit your PS3 system and start the other OS (of course you do), so choose "Yes" and wait for the PS3 to reboot. You should attach the USB keyboard and mouse to the PS3. In a few seconds, you will see "Ubuntu PS3 KBoot Loader" text on
the top of your screen. Insert the Ubuntu PS3 Live CD in your PS3, type install and wait for the Live CD to load.

I,m want to know what is the best portable hard-drive needed to backup my software and what the difference in portable hard-drives?

Answer
If you have High-speed internet then i would recommend using the Cloud

Reasons:
* Portable Hard-drives have a high failure rate ( Hard drive error, you drop it, magnets, water/weather)
* High Startup cost ($99+ for a cheap one) and warranty is usually limited
* You have to carry several pounds around
* Need to have more power to use it
* Easy for someone to steal your drive
* You don't have the drive with you then you can't get to your data

Reasons for Cloud:
* Secure and Encrypted
* Comes with backup software that you can schedule and will back it up
* Easy access from any computer in the world to your data
* Data can't be lost/destroyed
* Low monthly/yearly fees for data, as storage gets cheaper prices will fall.

I use the following: http://www.ignite360.com/secure/store click on "Ignite Backup" you can click on "More info" to see PDF explaining it with screenshots

Can I run applications off a portable hard dirve? Which portable hard drives should I buy? I want to run Dreamweaver, Net Objects Fusion or WebPage Maker from a portable hard drive.

Answer
You Can not run all of those programs on a portable drive. Check out http://portableapps.com/ for a great repository of Portable applications you can use.

- you can use any portable drive but you will want one that;
*has enough space [this should not be a problem as you can get USB Sticks fairly cheap nowadays]
*can interface quickly [ you will want USB 2.0 for the fastest load times however the computer must have USB 2.0]

Hope this helps

Answer
A good internal Hard drive for the PS3 would be any 2.5 inch SATA hard drive.

Here's some links to a hard drive that can be used Internally for the PS3 that's under $100 dollars:

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=9208971#Specifications

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/500917-REG/Western_Digital_WD2500BEVSRTL_250_GB_Scorpio_2_5_.html

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/484050-REG/Western_Digital_WD1600BEVSRTL_160_GB_Scorpio_2_5_.html

The brand name for the PS3's Internal Hard drive really doesn't matter, but personally I would go for a Seagate or Western Digital Internal Hard drive.

Any portable USB External Hard drive should be fine, but here's some links that I found:

Is there an yway to trasfer programs recorded on my dvr to a harddrive?

C R

i have one of those Motorola DVRs that you can get with Comcast in my house. how do i transfer programs that i recorded to a portable harddrive using the usb port in the from, and play them back of a computer?

Answer
Hi C R ,

The USB is for "future use" and isn't activated.

You can do it with DVD Xpress.

With DVD Xpress you can transfer your video to your hard drive and then edit it if you desire. DVD Xpress comes with basic video editing software. I got mine at Sam's for $59.95. They are cheaper now. You can look at one & read about it here - http://www.usb-ware.com/ads-dvd-xpress.htm

I saw a newer model at WalMart recently. It was the DVD Xpress2. I canât remember what it cost.

You connect the composite output of your DVR into the DVD Xpress and connect the DVD Xpress to your computer via a USB cable.
