whats the cheapest portable hard drive?

slice_the_

hi, i would like to have more hard drive space for my laptop to play games such as half life 2, wow.ect... i need a cheap portable hard drive but it needs to work well. thanks...
sorry...i meant external

Answer
Lots of companies sell them, check newegg.com for current prices, or many other retailers such as amazon.

It's like asking the best place to buy eggs. It depends on who has them on sale, and how much the farmer's charge the markets depending on volume, etc.

Beware that just because a drive is labelled "portable" doesn't necessarily mean it is more safe from damage than one labelled "external hard drive".

Check the price and specs of various models, and read reviews posted by owners of the devices.

Portable Hard Drives?

Lan Hikari

Did anyone notice that portable hard drive prices increase by about 50% this year? I bought a WD 1TB MyPassport last year from Best Buy for $99. I was just shopping for another one today and the cheapest I could find it was for $149. Anyone know why?

Answer
Nearly half of the world's hard drives are manufactured in Thailand. Due to months of flooding and natural disaster hard drive manufacturing has been disrupted. Less supply means demand goes up and so do prices.

$149 is still a lot of money though. You could definitely find something at about the $99 dollar range if you were to wait for a sale or something.

Portable External Hard Drive?

Enchantres

Help me find one, for my needs, please?

Requirements:
Bare minimum hard drive - 500gb. 1TB would be better, but mehh.
Size: relatively small, not extremely heavy or bulky. In other words, portable.
Password protection option.
Relatively fast transfer rate. I do not want to be waiting six hours for a few gb to transfer.
Easy to use, something like drag-and-drop or similar
Back-up software, so I can copy my harddrive contents to it in case of computer crashing emergency.
USB 2.0 powered only, since I don't want to plug into the wall and I don't have a firewire slot.
Price range - up to $150.

I was thinking a Toshiba one, since it might be best compatible with my Toshiba laptop?

Answer
Do you have a Best Buy or similar type of computer store where you can go look at them?

I would recommend looking at them in a store, and being able to talk to a knowledgeable sales person.
They would be better able to help you.
There is so many kinds / styles available, I would want to look at them all, and read the specifications on the box of the hard drive.

As for the back up- if you have much really important stuff on your computer, I would go with an
on-line back up, such as Carbonite.
I have a Carbonite back-up for mine, and it is great!!! It backs up my stuff automatically, every day.
An external hard drive for back up is good, but it still is a hard drive, and thus subject to crashing just like the internal hard drive in your computer.
Chances are slim, but you never know!

Good luck in your searching, and I hope you find a good one that does what you want it to do.....

Is it worth redecorating my room?

portable hard drives sale on Backup fails while properly connected and your computers hard drive ...

I love interior design and I have been really fed up with my room lately because it seems so bland. There are so many cool pieces that I would love to add to it, such as large picture frames, new bedding, etc. I would love to redecorate it but seeing as I am a college student, money is an issue (tuition is SUPER expensive) and I don't want to spend it all on room decor because I'm saving it for things such as a new hard drive for my laptop, a portable pdf reader, and other things I need for college.

So, should I spend some money on room decor if my room irritates me this much?

Answer
Yes, if you hate it so much. Look around for things you like at various stores and sites. You would be surprised that you could find things less than you think. Also check craigslist, tag sales, thrift shops. Even places like goodwill and salvation army. You could always repaint, refurbish.

Good Luck in school.

What to do when your hard drive fills up?

city_savvy

No amount of disk cleanup or anything like that can help. I simply have too many programs and files I'm not willing to part with.

What's my easiest solution for getting more storage? Should I get an external hard drive and move some stuff off of this one? Should I get a new internal hard drive? But then how do I rebuild and what do I use for backup?
It's a two year old Dell laptop

Answer
External & especially portable HD's Rock! You can carry 160-500GB's in your shirt pocket. They are very reliable!

$79 4 250-500GB depending on which model you want. Walmart usually beats Newegg.com unless they have a sale.

Update:
Just saw your addition details.
Definitely get a portable HD! You'll love it & you don't have 2 drag around a 5llb brick to share files, etc.

basically my whole life is on this computer, so if something happens to the hard drive I want to be able to have everything saved.

Thanks for any help!

Answer
Well, external hard drives are so cheap nowadays that you could just get a 250GB+ hard drive and back up everything 1:1. I think Best Buy has a sale of 500GB external drives this week.

What is better Seagate freeagent go or western digital my passport essential?

Iâm trying to decide what portable hard drive to buy, the Seagate Freeagent go or Western Digital's passport essential. Does either need any type of outside power source, like a battery? Do I need to buy a forked USB cable in order to have enough power?

Answer
Based on my variety of experiences, I'd choose Seagate unless you are planning on dumping some money for WD Raptors.

Experience from 20 years ago isn't going to help you, but Seagate's reputation took a dive after they bought Connor. :) Infact, the whole company took a dive with layoffs and being spread too thin overseas.

But they've gained a large market share since and have remained very strong in company / business sales all the while. Their current consumer line of drives seem very reliable as the ratio of bad Seagate drives vs good ones seems lower than bad Western Digital vs. good ones. I don't have numbers, but that's just the way it looks after working on thousands of computers.

My personal experiences with Seagate have been flawless. No problems. I cannot say the same for WD. But again, it is all subjective and luck of the draw...

Also from my personal experiences, I might include Samsung if it is available at a low price as well.

Can i use my portable hard drive to install xbox 360 game demos?

Dark Knigh

I'm really excited for the battlefield 3 beta but my xbox hard drive broke, that's why i'm thinking of using my portable hardrive, a seagate 500gb one but will my xbox get banned?

Answer
Xbox 360 Hard Drive 250GB was so easy to install. The capacity seems to be sufficient, but only time will tell, depending on how quickly it fills up. As far as durability, it is as durable as the game system itself, as it is installed internally. Great price! We got it for $20 off when it went on sale after the holidays and used $85 in gift cards, so I would say for paying only $35 out of pocket, IT IS GREAT!

How do I connect my portable hard drive to my Bravia TV?

portable hard drives sale on ... Digital WD 500GB My Passport USB 3.0 Portable External Hard Drive
portable hard drives sale image

annelu

I recently brought a 1TB WD Elements portable hard drive hoping to connect it to my Bravia TV and watch files such as avi. For some reason my TV doesn't seem to identify the device. But once I try multiple USBs it does. My friend recommended buying a blu-ray player. Is there another way around this, like having to alter my settings? Thanks in advance.

Answer
I know that a tv's USB 2.0 only supports a handful of video files. I know MP4's work, maybe avchd and h.264 (commonly used in cameras/camcorders). I know months ago I had tried .avi files on our tv's on the sales floor; samsung, sony, lg and had no luck.

As for not recognizing it,and i'm not sure how it's set up, it may not want to recognized a HDD USB device. It may only be flash drives or thumb-drives, whatever you want to call them. What I usually recommend is to get one of those WD TV boxes. Just plug in any USB device and itll recognize it.

http://reviews.cnet.com/portable-video-players-pvps/western-digital-wd-tv/4505-6499_7-33396690.html

# AVI , MKV , MOV , WMV , XviD , H.264 , MPEG-1 , MPEG-2 , MPEG-4
Those are the video file formats on that specific ones. They have newer nicer ones that do quite a bit more, have Web TV junk to stream through it. Some have 1080p support via HDMI, some don't, which affects the price.

I'd probably recommend a thumb drive with small avi file and plug it in, see if it even recognizes that file format. if it doesn't you'll have to convert it to a supported one.

Another question would be is what specific model you have. Not all usb models support video, some are just photos and music. Is your usb on the side or on the back with the other inputs? Generally, the back usb ports are for service updates only whereas the side ones are generally for media and/or servicing. If you toss us a model number we can give you a little more details, as for now I just kind of have to do a spread shot of different issues. Hope it helps.

Can you plug a portable hard drive into a xbox 360 4GB?

R_Flip

So i want a xbox, im looking at a 4gb kinect bundle, its on sale and really cheap.
What are the cons of 4gb?
Does this xbox have the same features as the others? like 250gb and whatever else?
Like wifi? and usb ports?
so can you plug a portable hard drive into it and save things on and and it work the same?
Thanks .

Answer
Yes, you can use a portable hard drive with an XBOX 360, but BEWARE! It won't work the same. There are some disadvantages of choosing this method for storing data.

+ You can use the entire hard drive for files you add on your PC or Mac like movies etc...
- You can only use up to 16 GB space for XBOX 360 Storage. (for games, saves etc etc) on an external (portable) hard drive.

I think you should get an internal hard drive, which is has no limitations for the XBOX 360 storage (the whole HDD is for XBOX 360).
You can only use a geniue Microsoft hard drive specifically designed for XBOX 360 Slim.

(it's hard to make hard drives for older XBOX 360s work and it's impossible to use a regular 2,5" SATA hard drive that are for PCs. Even thought it has a 2,5" SATA bay, it WONT accept a regular HDD, it spins it but it doesn't show up no matter how I format it. It needs a specific firmware, which is only present on Microsoft's HDD for XBOX 360)
So it's a much easier way to just get the official 250 GB HDD. It also has a special enclosure which makes it sliding it perfectly and fits it tight.
So basically it's just a slide-in thing.

So I would suggest you getting the Microsoft 250 GB Hard drive for XBOX 360 Slim. That's what I will do; I also have an XBOX 360 Slim 4 GB. (w/o Kinect)
