I am ordering a Seagate Backup Plus 500GB Portable USB 3.0 External Hard Drive, (compatible with PC and Mac) from Staples. If I plug it into the USB input on my Xbox 360, (newest edition, 4GB) will I be able to select it as a storage device to save downloaded games to?

Answer
I know for sure that you can use a USB drive. You might as well try it out. There's nothing holding you back. Plug it in and see if it pops up when it asks you to pick which storage to get your saved games from.

I have a 500gb portable hard drive, does it work if I plug it into a stereo with a usb port? Will it play the music?

The stereo I have now only has an aux input so I can't try it out myself, has anyone else tried?

Answer
I must say, sadly the hard drive wont work, since the stereo's usb is not as highly powered as a computer usb port. But a large memory flash drive (30 gb) would work.

What is the best portable external hard drive?

Starie chi

I am looking for a portable external hard drive that is between 500GB and 1TB (depends on the price). I plan on storing pictures and music along with some document and possibly back up my laptop as well. I want to know what are the best brands and models for what I need. I think I have narrowed it down to Seagate and Western Digital.

Answer
i have been using portable drives for quite a few years and have a few of them all western digital the best one i would say would be
http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digital-Passport-Essential-Portable/dp/B0041OSQ9S/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1314421146&sr=8-1

it has a 3.0 USB which is a lot faster and its a good price for 1 TB

Will any portable hard drive work for an Apple computer or do I need to specifically buy an Apple product?

thmtom

My wife just got a Mac-book (or some apple computer of shorts). It is the first apple base computer in our family. Being I'm a Microsoft guy (I have not converted yet), I'm clueless about Macs. I want to buy my wife a portable hard drive for her birthday (and she has been asking for one). Will any portable hard drive work for an Apple or do I need to specifically buy an Apple product?

Answer
If you were to go to an Apple retail store, you'd see that none of the portable hard drives are Apple-branded. Apple doesn't make its own hard disks, not even the ones in their Time Machine backup product.

If you get something from Seagate, Toshiba or Western Digital you should be fine. Those are all big players in the storage market and I've used drives from all those manufacturers successfully with a Mac running OS X.

best external hard drive pc image

Nate

I wanted to know if the transfer speed depended on the external hard drive, my pc, or the cable it uses to transfer the files?

Answer
it's the cables, with external hard drives there's two types of cables you can use, sata or usb. sata delivers and receives information alot faster, but you can only use sata cables if your computer tower has external sata capabilities. and there's more, with hard drives there's more than just cables you got the rpm speed, and the buffer memory (cache) with with the buffer memory the higher the number the better, to give you a good idea of what it does, say my hard drive has a 32mb cache with means it will receive and deliver information faster, like opening a program will be a breeze, selecting the start button will pop up in less then a blink of an eye. so if you haven't bought a hard drive just yet keep in mind when your shopping for one that it has sata cables, a good rpm speed, and anywhere between 16 to 32mb of memory buffer aka cache.

Answer
Have you tried assigning it a drive letter in the disk management console? Right click on my computer, click manage. Click disk management. Find your drive, right click it, and click assign drive letter. If it is not already, it will need to be formatted/partitioned, which you can do from the Disk Management Console

Could it be a USB problem? A internal power problem? I'm at a loss here, and I can't access a lot of important files that weren't located on any other drive . This portable hard drive is only about 3-4 months old.

Answer
I would try using the hard drive on a different USB port and maybe even a different PC. before resorting to the more drastic methods listed below.

It may be a faulty drive. I heard a number a few years back that 40% of all new hardware is bad. So, maybe your drive has already failed. I purchased a brand new dell a few years back and when I received it the printer port was fried.

If you can not retrieve the data and it is extremely important, there are companies that can recover data from damaged drives. But it is expensive. I think something like $500.

I've listed one recovery company that I was able to find below. I would try to get a review about the quality of the company before sending my hard drive off to have the data extracted. Many companies will only charge you if they are able to recover data.

Install a game to a portable hard drive?

Dharan S

I recently bought GTA :San Andreas and want to install it onto my portable hard drive. The problem is that I move the hard drive around and the computers that I use assign different letters to the drive. Because of this, I don't think that the game will work on those computers. Is there a way of removing all the drive references and replace them with the names of the current computer? If not, I will return it (unopened) and buy something else.

Answer
Open Device Manager, click on the plus sign, next to the driver, and then open the properties, and click on the "settings" tab, go down and set the driver to the letter you want. That is what I did with my Flashdrive.

I have a portable hard drive, thats supposed to be 120gb but only has 111gb. The files that were already on it can't take up 9gb. Same with my ipod, what gives?

Answer
it's 120gb unformatted. The file system takes up a lot of space. Without going into too much detail, it's basically a database that tells your hard drive where each file is located and how big it is. There is nothing you can do about it - it's like that on every hard drive.

I want to rip my dvds to a portable hard drive so i can then watch them on my xbox 360 when i connect it to the portable hard drive.

What format should i rip my dvds to? .avi? .wmv? .mp4?

Answer
I believe the Xbox 360 supports .wmv, .avi, h.264, and MPEG 2. I would recommend .avi because it will work with pretty much anything (by anything, I mean other media devices). And although the Xbox was made originally to play only WMVs it now fully supports .avi. BUT, just so you know, an external hard drive needs to be formatted to FAT32 before the Xbox can detect it and even then it is only limited use but you can watch movies off it. If your rip the DVD to .avi, the Xbox will also support 5.1 DD if the DVD is 5.1 and you correctly ripped it. If your external hard drive isn't formatted to FAT32, use a flash drive or stream it from your computer using TVersity which is an excellent piece of media sharing software found at www.tversity.com

Can i connect XBOX 360 4GB Console wit 320GB WD Portable HDD to use 16 GB for games and rest for Mp3,Videos?

I have brought XBOX 360 4GB console. I have a 320 GB Western Digital Elements 2.5" Portable Hard Drive. Will i be able to use this to extend 16 GB memory to store some games and remaining for for my personal Mp3 and videos for entertainment ?

Answer
Yes as long as it's compatible with the 360. It needs to be FAT 32 to play media on the console. You can partition it under the memory section when you choose to use it to store 360 content. Set aside 16GBs for use on there and the rest will be accessible on your computer to add media.

Answer
The brand doesn't really matter. 7200rpm is faster than 5400rpm and solid state drives are even faster. But solid state drives are too expensive and don't come with that much space. WiiPS3 Pla

I don't want to spend more than $100 on either.

Answer
A good internal Hard drive for the PS3 would be any 2.5 inch SATA hard drive.

Here's some links to a hard drive that can be used Internally for the PS3 that's under $100 dollars:

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=9208971#Specifications

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/500917-REG/Western_Digital_WD2500BEVSRTL_250_GB_Scorpio_2_5_.html

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/484050-REG/Western_Digital_WD1600BEVSRTL_160_GB_Scorpio_2_5_.html

The brand name for the PS3's Internal Hard drive really doesn't matter, but personally I would go for a Seagate or Western Digital Internal Hard drive.

Any portable USB External Hard drive should be fine, but here's some links that I found:

Is there an yway to trasfer programs recorded on my dvr to a harddrive?

C R

i have one of those Motorola DVRs that you can get with Comcast in my house. how do i transfer programs that i recorded to a portable harddrive using the usb port in the from, and play them back of a computer?

Answer
Hi C R ,

The USB is for "future use" and isn't activated.

You can do it with DVD Xpress.

With DVD Xpress you can transfer your video to your hard drive and then edit it if you desire. DVD Xpress comes with basic video editing software. I got mine at Sam's for $59.95. They are cheaper now. You can look at one & read about it here - http://www.usb-ware.com/ads-dvd-xpress.htm

I saw a newer model at WalMart recently. It was the DVD Xpress2. I canât remember what it cost.

You connect the composite output of your DVR into the DVD Xpress and connect the DVD Xpress to your computer via a USB cable.

I bought a laptop about a year ago and I have been thinking of purchasing an external hard drive to start back up my laptop on to, in case something happens to it. I am not familiar with any of the brands, can anyone point me in the right direction?

Its specifics are

Stylish colors - Available in Ruby Red, Midnight Blue and Silver
Rugged - Perfect for travel environments, the Drop Guard feature protects the drive when dropped up to 51"

I'm looking to get a 1TB external hard drive for Christmas. The only thing that's important is that it's going to be reliable and I won't have to worry about drive failure or data loss for a few years at least. What is the best brand and/or model to get? I was looking at a Verbatim one for $79 but I also seen an IOmega one for the same price. I never heard of IOmega before and I'm thinking it's a matter of the brand name of the drive itself that defines the quality.

You need to do some better research. Iomega have been making computer storage devices for 30 years. Their zip, jaz and ditto drives were famous.

Here are charts of external drive manufacturers performance to help you decide - http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/external-hard-drive-charts/benchmarks,26.html

Answer
Very easy. Connect the drive to a usb port on your computer and copy paste all your important files from your computer to the external hard drive. If I go in more detail then you will have to open or explore your external hard drive and once the target window is open, go to your files or folder on the source drive and copy all your content by selecting it. Then go to your target drive and paste it. These are really basic instructions. You can google step by step instructions for more help.

How do you get a new Boot Drive, but completely identical, in a Mac Pro?

Ryan

I'm interested in getting a faster and bigger HDD in my Mac Pro. The only problem holding me back is that I don't have a clue how to make it exactly identical to the original HDD. Are there any suggestions on what I should do?

Answer
You can get a drive duplicator e.g. from StarTech. This will create a block level duplicate. The larger partition will not appear at first, the unused section will need to have the partition extended into it using Disk Utility or a 3rd Party tool.
You can also use a second mac to create a DMG of your drive by putting your MacPro into Target Disk mode, then replace the hardware and reverse the procedure to recover the disk image onto the new drive.
Another way to do it is to put the new drive in, put the old disk into an external drive caddy to turn it into a portable hard drive, reinstall the operating system on the new, blank disk, then trigger the Migration Assistant to copy the important stuff from your old drive which now appears as an external hard disk. This is probably the way I would do it.

However, they both can be used the same way.

Help for an issue with Toshiba External Hard Drive?

Karen

Hello, I have a 3TB Toshiba External Hard drive. We have been watching movies off of it using a WD TV box and recently the box has not been able to recognize the hard drive.
The USB drive on the box can however recognize other USB flash drives, and the external hard drive shows up and works like normal when I plug it into my lap top.
Any ideas? Things I could try?

Answer
I suggest you ask your question here: http://px1.us?3IC

In the meantime, have there been any recent WD TV upgrades? The WD does stand for Western Digital, a competitor of Toshiba in this regard: any chance they dropped support for Toshiba drives?

The USB port enables connection and control of a portable USB mass-storage class device. The USB port is compatible with all USB mass storage class devices that support the FAT16 or FAT32 file system. Your USB device should only have a maximum of 8 directory levels, 255 folders, and 255 files per folder with a maximum of 65,025 files and folders.

I want to watch & record TV on my laptop, I think using a TV tuner card but no nothing about them! Help!?

portable hard drive reviews uk on 500GB Seagate Slim Portable Hard Drive : Portable Hard Drives : Maplin ...
portable hard drive reviews uk image

Marc K

I've searched on the internet for info on TV tuner cards and apparently that's what I'll need to be able to watch and record TV on my laptop. Basically what I want to do is watch TV on my laptop wherever I go. Is a TV tuner what I need? Do I need a stick or a card? Is Hauppage any good? I've read some reviews and apparently they're rubbish so are there any good ones around? And what do I need?

I've heard they come with a portable antenna too, whereas I thought I'd just plug the card into the PCI slot and there you go, I'd have all of the freeview channels, but apparently I need to use the portable antenna or attach a TV aerial to the computer.. thing is I don't have anywhere on my laptop where I can attach the TV aerial AND i want to watch TV on the move, which I obviously can't do if I have to attach a TV aerial.

Can someone just please explain to me what I need to get freeview channels on my laptop using a tv tuner card or whatever, which I can record to my laptop or external hard drive, and also put onto my iPhone, examples of good ones to buy and where to get them (UK), and any extras I need to purchase, i.e. if I need a better antenna than the one that apparently comes with the tuner card to access the channels on the move please?... And how to install them, in the most basic way you can! (I've watched youtube videos and searched loads of Google pages, even a pretty basic hubpage and still can't get my head around it all). Thanks so much! I'm in the UK too by the way :)
Also, if there's something (other than a slingbox) that I can use to watch Sky channels on my laptop (doesn't have to be portable), can you let me know. Thanks.

Answer
I think to be able to use a tuner card, you would need a desktop, not a laptop, because you'd have to install it inside the system. Laptops are fairly hard to upgrade.

Which laptop/netbook would suit my needs and tastes best?

Alannah

Hi everyone,

In this question, I'm not simply asking what kind of laptop/netbook is best, but which laptop/netbook would suit my needs and tastes the best.

I currently have a Macbook Air first generation, and find it aesthetically pleasing, but that is not an option anymore. I found it quite flimsy - the lid snapped off at one point, my hard drive is nearly full, and it runs quite slowly. I'd want a large hard drive, and also a CD drive in my new laptop.

The Macbook Pro seems okay, but it's not really all that practical or portable, even the 13-inch. I also find Word for Mac a little difficult to use and not all that practical. Maybe I'm not using it properly.

In terms of PC laptops, I really have no idea what is available. I use a desktop PC at home, and find it fairly user friendly, but in some ways also prefer the Mac user interface.

Basically, I want something lightweight and portable, with a large hard drive, a CD drive and an easy to use interface. I want to be able to carry it to university and dance courses easily.

I'm a psychology undergraduate student and a dancer, and will mostly be using my laptop for:

- Word processing.
- Reading PDF documents and Ebooks.
- Using PowerPoint
- Using a statistical program, SPSS.
- Internet browsing.
- Downloading music/videos.
- Playing music/videos.
- Watching videos on YouTube.
- Uploading dance videos.

What do you think? What would I be best to buy? I'm open to all possibilities.

If you suggest a PC or netbook, please provide me with links to appropriate models.

Thank you!

Answer
Well, you definitely don't want a netbook. Netbooks have small hard-drives and very little RAM, so they are weak in terms of power and very slow. They also do not have CD drives as they simply do not have the power to handle anything but basic programs.

If you're looking for something portable, PCs usually aren't the best. All PC laptops I've used, I've found to be heavy and rather bulky. Personally, I use a white Macbook and I used to take it to college with no problem. It's not amazingly light, but it was never too hard to carry around. Also, if you find Word for Mac difficult, try the Apple equivalent: Pages. It makes files that are compatible with Word and it's basically just Apple's own version of Word.

The only remotely portable PC i can think of is one a friend of mine had. The Acer 1825PT, it's pretty cool as it also has a touch-screen. http://reviews.cnet.co.uk/laptops/acer-aspire-1825pt-review-49305749/ <there's a review of it there if you want to have a look.

Other than that, I'd go with a Mac, or even an iPad or other tablet.
