Why does my portable hard drive not have full memory?

I have a portable hard drive, thats supposed to be 120gb but only has 111gb. The files that were already on it can't take up 9gb. Same with my ipod, what gives?

it's 120gb unformatted. The file system takes up a lot of space. Without going into too much detail, it's basically a database that tells your hard drive where each file is located and how big it is. There is nothing you can do about it - it's like that on every hard drive.

Is there a way to keep my itunes library on my portable hard drive?

All of my music is on my PC. The PC is dying and my primary computer is my Mac Book. Is there a way to keep all of my music on my portable hard drive and have it accessible through my mac? I have an ipod that I want to switch over to my Mac from my PC as well. How do I coordinate all of this? Thank you.

just sync all they files onto your ipod and transfer them to what and where ever you like
