http://www.prlog.org/10163742-buffalo-drivestation-500gb-usb-20-external-hard-drive-hd-ce500u2.jpg
thanks guys for the answers,
but is there anything positive that i
can get from this?

bcoz im in deep shit
can i get it fixed? or does my dad
has to buy a new 150$ hard drive..?

Answer
1. U beta hope & pray ur dad doesnt keep any important back-up data on it, if so its not some much the end of the world as u can take it to a pro (Computer store) and they can do a data recovery for you.

2. When you say the green light comes on for 5 seconds then goes off?, Is the computer on when you do this or is it off?, usually the device isnt going to run unless you turn the pc on, turn on the pc and try access the hard drive, there might be nothing wrong with it (Might = 50/50% chance).

3. The buzzing sound could mean the devise is try to reboot, Plug it in like it was in before, turn off all the power including the power to the pc and then turn it all on again. might fix it.

4. Physical harddisc reader inside is stuffed, Have to do some explaining, then assure him that it can be fixed at a computer specialist store, they might be able to recover ur data, but u might have to buy a new device for him...

if you have to buy a new one or he goes and buys a new one please avoid this kinda thing from happening agin by purchasing a Transcend one like this one (below), Called a "StoreJet 25M" comes in sizes 250GB to 750GB.

external hard drive noise?

Tyler D

i have a 500gb external hard drive and i have some important information on it and went to plug it in and it slid off my hand and hit the floor and now it is making a weird clicking noise can someone please help me?

Answer
External hard drives are very delicate and should be treated as such, since this is a common problem with damages to the drives. Your best bet would be to invest in another drive since yours could fail at anytime. As far as recovery goes, the best advice that I can offer is to do a file transfer from the damaged one to another drive. That is if the files are readable. And if the files cannot be transferred your other option would be to recover the data and transfer soon after. I googled & came across many data recovery programs, most of which hook you, meaning they offer free download & scan but charge for additional services. The one I did my search on was freeware, but again I didn't go any further than the download link since I am unsure whether or not there will be a charge. I absolutely refuse to pay for anything nowadays. But give it a try, should that be the case and move on to another link or data recovery program if your current one charges for services. Sorry about your troubles. Best of luck to you friend!

Experts on LaCie Rugged 1TB portable Hard Drive needed!?

I have a few questions:
1). Will this hard drive allow me to copy files from both Windows and Mac onto it,
2). Will this hard drive allow me to backup both a Windows and Mac onto it
3). Does it come with backup software?
4). Is it USB Bus powered?

(Note: The Computers I have are:
Windows XP
And
Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3)

Answer
"(Note: The Computers I have are:
Windows XP
And
Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3)"
Not. Those are the software systems, not the computers. Example of a computer is MacBook Pro 2.4GHz quad-core i7 2012.

All HDDs are the same for your questions, so this answer is for all HDDs in the world including your LaCie.

1). Will this hard drive allow me to copy files from both Windows and Mac onto it,
A: The HDD has nothing to say about what you copy. The format and the driver control that. The Apple driver for NTFS format is read-only, so you have to add software, such as Paragon NTFS For Mac, to enable write (means copy, move, rename) to the HDD. Alternately, you could format the drive for "Mac OS Extended" and buy either "MacDrive" or "TransMac" for Windows to be able to use it, but the Paragon NTFS For Mac software is cheaper. You could expand your brain a bit beyond initial cost and realize that the Mac format (used with OS 10.2 or later, even more so with OS 10.3 or later) is more efficient and more resistant to fragmentation than any format from Microsoft. Alternate plan would be install HFSExplorer in Windows to enable read (copying) from Mac formatted volumes, create two partitions on the HDD, when in Windows add files to the NTFS volume, and in OS X add files to the Mac volume. Then you can copy from NTFS when in Os X, and copy from Mac format when in Windows -- total cost of extra software = zero.

2). Will this hard drive allow me to backup both a Windows and Mac onto it
Apple's backup software is "Time Machine". That needs "Mac OS Extended" format. I don't use any backup software with Windows, but I would bet a dollar to a doughnut it needs NTFS format. To use one HDD with both backup strategies, create two partitions on the HDD, and format two file systems.

3). Does it come with backup software?
The HDD? Ask the maker.

4). Is it USB Bus powered?
I have never heard of any HDD case without a USB port except a NAS. If your Mac has Firewire 800, get a case with that connection also, because it is much faster than USB. LaCie shows a graph of speed comparison for USB and FW, but it is bunk, because in real-life use, USB never performs up to its theoretical maximum specs. It takes 2-3 times as long to copy a 1 GB movie file through USB 2.0 as it does through FW 800.

The links below are for top quality HDD and case that I use with my Macs. The HDD is fast (7200 RPM), the case is flexible (four connection options) and will dissipate heat well (aluminum not plastic). To get a 1 TB 7200 RPM in aluminum case from LaCie, you buy the "Enterprise" at $299.

What to do with my external hard drive?

IDK!

Today I just got a Seagate Free Agent Go Flex Ultra Portable Hard drive (1 Tb). I have it plugged into a USB port on the back of my computer. My question is that, is it safe to leave it plugged in and powered all the time when my computer is running? (My computer does get shut down every night and may run from as little as none to 5 or 6 hours in a day). If it is indeed safe to leave it plugged in, should I do a "safely remove hardware function" before I go to shutdown or will it power down safely with the computer?

By the way I am running windows XP if that matters.
Thanks!

Answer
I've been using an external 1TB USB hard drive (Freeagent) on my desktop for well over a year. I leave it plugged in and active all of the time, and I rarely turn my computer off. I've had no problems with it. Use it mostly to store huge videos. Other good uses for one are as backup media and monster thumb drive.

Of course you'll get extra wear and tear on the drive if it spins all the time, but you might be able to adjust for that in your power saving settings in XP.

Have fun with it. They're really cool. :)

is a terra bit hard disk worth getting?

Duane

i would like to ge a external hard disc, ann a TB is the size, are they fragile could a miss hap destroy it. and having moving parts I would guess that i would want some quality, because that is a lot of inf to have then loose.

Answer
i have a 1TB simpletech [re]drive external hard drive. it was $89 when i got it at fry's electronics. its quite bulky and requires a secondary power source, making it not too portable. overall I its very reliable and the [re]drive design is very nice looking.

mine has been in use for about 6 months now, I have not hand a single problem with it. my main concern is some a$$hole stealing my drive rather than it breaking. It looks really nice (aluminum and bamboo finish) which makes it kind of a magnet for thieves.
so far its proven to be quite durable, it survived two accidental trips to the floor and half a dozen rides inside checked luggage on aircraft. I know luggage handlers have a tendency to roughly treat baggage, the drive works like new.

is portable hard drive runs slower than external hard drive?

Frank

my seagate 700GB external hard drive crashed. i never had any problems when watching movies directly from seagate via my laptop. i wanted to buy a portable hard drive now but a friend told me that it will run slower specially when watching movies directly from portable hard drive. Since they get power from USB, there will be a lag time and will create a frustration. Is this true?

Also which brand should i try now?

Answer
My 2 cents...

Portable hard drives that get power from the USB port are convenient but they can have problems.

Typically to keep the amount of power drawn from the USB port at a minimum, the typical USB powered hard drive used a slower performance hard drive.

In addition, some laptops can experience USB port problems if you have multiple USB devices that draw power from the port at the same time, particularly if you use one of those self-powered USB hub expanders.

As an IT professional, I tell users to get an external hard drive that has an external power source. Generally these are physically bigger and cost LESS per a gigabyte than ultra portable drives. Plus because they are designed to be "static" (not moved), you're less likely to have an accident, as in dropping the ultra portable drive or have a power issue. Plus you can pay a little extra to get a faster drive (one with a faster data access speed and a bigger buffer).

Also the external hard drives use the larger form factor hard drives inside the unit versus the laptop sized drives in the ultra portables - again, less likely to have disk problems.

I recommend looking for drives with 3-5 year warranties if possible. I personally have purchased Western Digital external drives and have been happy with them.

which is better for a netbook: external or portable hard drive?

Answer
I believe you may be comparing a 2.5" drive in comparison to a 3.5" drive when you say one is portable and one is external (as they both are external ;)..)

Portable would be in reference to that it does not require an external power adapter but externals are bigger and require an additional source of power.

Performance wise the external will probably give you better performance as they are cheaper to produce and have a solid stream of power - but in comparison to portability they are a pain to have to plug in everywhere just to access your files on the go.

So the decision is up to you :)

Hope i've helped cheers!

Portable camcorder with autofocus? Under $1000?

Brookeeee

Answer
HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras interpolate the video, which means of every 25 frames of video, 4 or 5 frames are taken by the lens assembly; the other frames in between these are filled in by the camcorder inner circuitry, thus giving you not true video. It looks like this -one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, from front to back of the video. Near impossible to edit, even when you have the Multi port processor computer with the big 1GB Graphics card and a Sound card that is required to edit, view, watch and work with the files these camcorders produce.

Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras have 4 problems. 1) Blurry, fuzzy, out of focus areas closely around people in videos taken by consumer level HD camcorders. 2) Any movement, even a wave or lifting an arm, while in front of a recording Consumer Level HD Camcorder and DSLR Cameras, results in screen ghosts and artifacts being left on the video track, following the movement. Makes for bad video, sports videos are unwatchable. 3) These Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras all have a habit of the transferred to computer files are something you need to convert, thus losing your HD quality, to work with your editing software. 4) Mandatory maximum record times - 1 hour, 30 minutes, 8 minutes, 3 minutes â four different times advertised as maximum record time for some Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras. No event I have ever been to is that short. Either take multiple camcorders and DSLR Cameras or pack up with out getting the end of the event on video.

MiniDV is currently the most popular format for consumer digital camcorders. MiniDV camcorders are typically more affordable than their HDD and DVD counterparts. Each MiniDV tape will typically hold an hour of footage at normal recording speed and quality. MiniDV tapes are available for purchase at not only electronic and camera stores, but also at drugs stores and grocery stores, making them easy to find while your on vacation. There are literally hundreds of MiniDV camcorders available; both in standard and high-definition. And add the fact that to get a HD camcorder that could produce better video quality footage, one would have to spend in excess of $3500 for that camcorder that could produce higher quality video.http://simplevideoediting.com/learn/part1_camcorder_choices.htm

What is a good HD camcorder?

piekid0529

I want a good HD camcorder. It has to be less than $1100 and the resolution is 1080p. I don't care how it stores the picture/video (ex: memory stick, built in hard drive, sd card). Preferably portable but can be attached to a tripod. Produces very good videos. I want optical zoom on the camcorder. I also want picture taking as one of the features. The camcorder can save the video in any format. Any suggestions?
And one more question. Do you think the Canon Vixia HF200 is a good camcorder? Please give the reason also.

Answer
Canon Vixia HF200 is a good camcorder it take good video quality but I would recommend Canon VIXIA HFS100 HD Flash Memory Camcorder with 10x Optical Zoom.Professional camera lens with superb HD video quality even in low light situations.

MacBook pro 2011 v.s a iMac desktop?

Jessica

Hi. I am having a difficulty time deciding which apple computer should I get for the summer. I like the MacBook pro for its portability. I am a university student who currently own a MacBook 2008 version but is looking for more external hard drive space to download movies, applications, and get good hd graphics. The application i want to download is Final Cut Pro, Adobe photoshop, after effects, motions, and other media applications. I will be using the computer to edit my film projects for school (heavily) and personal stuff. I am planning to get an iMac or a MacBook pro. The down side with an iMac is that I need it to be portable. I really like both. Since I own a MacBook laptop already should get a MacBook or a iMac. So what do u guys think. Please help me decide. Thanks.

Answer
For video editing I personally like the top spec 15" macbook pro although if you already have a macbook then maybe the iMac makes more sense.
http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_mac/family/macbook_pro
Before you buy Final Cut Pro, Apple are releasing new video editing software called Final Cut Pro X (ten) in June at a fraction of the price ($299) of the old Final Cut Pro.

2011 MacBook Pro v.s. Sager NP8170-S1?

Brian

Hey everybody, I need some help deciding what computer to get for school. I've been a Mac user all my life, but have recently found some shortcomings that have made me start to question whether or not I actually want my next computer to be another Mac. I'm headed off to college in the Fall, and am looking for a good laptop that will have good functionality. I want it to be great for multimedia, schoolwork, and gaming, as it will be my one device for all of these tasks. Here's the dilemma:
Currently, I have a Santa Rosa chip MacBook Pro from early 2007. Despite being to run Windows (for the most part) natively through BootCamp, the computer has never been fast enough, and has never had a strong enough videocard to run games on the settings I would like it to.

The new (2011) MacBook Pro's seem to have the same problem. Their ATI card is somewhat outdated, to say the least. It offers only 256mb of vram in the 15" and 17", which most definitely won't support games that I want to run on max settings. They also don't offer a 2.5GHz quad-i7, instead maxing out at a 2.3. Similarly, they don't offer 16 gigs of ram, only 8 (I suspect Apple plans to release 8 gig chips for their portables this summer, but can't currently produce enough to meet demand).

So, I've looked around and come across Sager as my best option for gaming. I don't want the 12lb. model, as the 8.6lb. model already seems to be on the heavy side (especially when compared to my current 5.4lb. computer). Fully configured, it offers 2 harddrives (I'd get a 120GB SATAIII in one slot and a 750GB 7200rpm drive in the other), 16 gigs of ram, a Blu-ray player/burner, and a 2gig Nvidia GTX 485m card, Nvidia's current top of the line mobile gpu. This will obviously be better for gaming.

My questions are as follows (directed primarily to owners/people who know owners of any Sager computers, and people who are aware/experienced with OSx86/Hackintosh):
-Does anybody here own a Sager NP8170-S1 (or any other Sager model)? Do you like it/would you recommend it? What are its strengths and weaknesses? What is its average battery life while browsing the web and just doing simple word processing?
-Would I be able to find the necessary drivers/would it be possible to install OSx86 (Hackintosh) on the machine? I would like the ability to dual boot like I currently can with my Mac. In a related question, how well does Hackintosh work? Can I connect wirelessly to networks? I'm pretty experienced and resourceful when it comes to installing custom firmware on various devices/hacking stuff/building servers, so I'm not worried about the difficulty level of the project--just want to know if it works in the end.

Please, for the love of all that may be holy, do not answer if your response contains anything related to the following:
-"mac suxxx, pc rulez, buy pc!"
-"pc is cheap crapz, buy mac lulpwnzar"
-"i haz no knowledge of computers. specs on one prettier than specs on other. go with prettier spec."

Answers like those will be disregarded. I'm not creating a forum for you guys to debate which os is better. They both have their strengths and weaknesses, be mature ffs.

Thank you so much in advance to any good answers! I'll do my part and give you your points for answering (the best response).

Answer
I'm going to save you a lot of trouble. If you can go without a back-light keyboard get a Sager. For one if you are really getting into multimedia it has the specs they will last you a good three to five years. Plus you could visualize/dual-boot to mac osx with vmware if you get the 2720. Also you could use the Adobe CS5 suite for most of your multimedia needs. I hear the new premiere pro does HD editing in real time and can even import final cut pro session files. There's very few people who have the laptop due to the intel 2nd generation i7 recalls but you could get a gist of the specs in the link below. A member by the name of Htwingnut or some sort also has a review somewhere in the forum. Sorry I would link it but I'm doing this on the go. Finally if you get the 485m you wont have to worry about games at all and you could pretty much get a 8gb ram sager 2720 processor with a 750 gb hard drive or cheaper than a macbook pro. Good luck mate!!

whats the cheapest portable hard drive?

slice_the_

hi, i would like to have more hard drive space for my laptop to play games such as half life 2, wow.ect... i need a cheap portable hard drive but it needs to work well. thanks...
sorry...i meant external

Answer
Lots of companies sell them, check newegg.com for current prices, or many other retailers such as amazon.

It's like asking the best place to buy eggs. It depends on who has them on sale, and how much the farmer's charge the markets depending on volume, etc.

Beware that just because a drive is labelled "portable" doesn't necessarily mean it is more safe from damage than one labelled "external hard drive".

Check the price and specs of various models, and read reviews posted by owners of the devices.

www.tomshardware.com is my favorite site for evaluating computer parts, but don't stop there.

Question about a Portable Hard Drive?

I have a Seagate Free Agent Portable Hard Drive 320 GB and it won't work on my PS3. How do I get it to work?

Answer
Your hard drive will need to be formatted to FAT32 specification, dear lady, or your PS3 won't see it.

You can do this by downloading and installing the following file. (It's called FAT32 formatter by some strange coincidence.)

Do make sure you select the correct drive to format when you do it. I'd hate you to lose your operating system.

I am scouting for a portable hard drive. ?

What is the factors determining the quality of a portable hard drive.
What brands to recommend.

Answer
I don't recommend you buy a 'portable' drive - it's simply a normal hard disk in a case with a USB interface.

You can buy those USB boxes with no disk inside, then simply buy a HDD.

All you have to decide is the size - if full size is okay, then the cheapest ratio is at 500GB (I got a Seagate Barracuda 500GB for equivalent 50 US dollars, and a USB box for $10 more).

When I use it at home - because it's a SATA disk - it takes me exactly 2 minutes to take it out of the case and install it in my computer (just plug in the ribbon and the power).

I recommend Seagate and Western Digital - and would rather buy two 500GB drives than one 1TB, because it's just soooo much cheaper.

We're talking several hundred dollars for the laCie - 4 times the cost of a Seagate!!!!!

Is this 'portable hard drive' or 'something to go with my Gucci Handbag'? =)) If you're worried about knocking it about, you put it in a protective bag - will that cost you extra $150?

Also, if the box is easy to open - it's very convenient sometimes to plug in the disk to your mainboard. I always put mine inside, then set the machine to back up my main 500GB, then unplug it and put it back in it's box.

This or That Hard Drive?

(So three)
Hm.... Chintan why is the Westen Digital crap? (Just curious)

Answer
That's two Hitachi 2.5" hard drives vs. one WD. 2.5" hard drive.
G-Technology 500GB G-DRIVE mobile Portable Hard Drive -- $$129.95
- Firewire and USB 2.0
- 500GB Hitachi laptop hard drive inside
- 5400RPM

Western Digital 500GB My Passport for Mac Portable Hard Drive -- $119.95
- USB 2.0
- 500GB WD laptop hard drive inside
- probably 5400RPM as well

G-Tech 500GB G-DRIVE Slim Portable USB Drive -- $79.95
- USB 2.0
- 500GB Hitachi laptop hard drive inside
- 5400RPM

For speed, choose the first due to the Firewire connectivity. For reliability, choose the WD. For a cheaper price, choose the 3rd. Don't be enticed by the 'formatted for Mac' and 'Time Machine-ready' crap. They all are. So what does that tell you? It's the WD unless you are particular about the Firewire feature.

However, if it were my money, I would future-proof my investment on a USB 3.0 external hard drive like this:
LaCie Rugged 500 GB USB 3.0 Mini Disk Portable Hard Drive 301555 -- $99.00
http://www.amazon.com/LaCie-Rugged-Portable-Drive-301555/dp/B0058VIWXI/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1339594514&sr=8-8&keywords=2.5%26%2334%3B+external+hard+drive

If attached to a USB 3.0 port, you can use the LaCie Mac USB 3.0 Driver to improve data transfer speed on your Mac (up to 30% performance increase compared to FireWire 800).

If you don't foresee yourself having a computer that has USB 3.0 in the near future and want to stick with Firewire then you can just get this:
LaCie Rugged All-Terrain 500 GB FireWire 800/ FireWire 400/USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive 301371 -- $114.95
http://www.amazon.com/LaCie-All-Terrain-FireWire-Portable-301371/dp/B0018B5CA8/ref=pd_cp_e_0

Or go back to the more expensive G-Tech 500GB that has Firewire:

can I use the external hard drive to work with Video editing?

Rackmanage

My hard drive (C:) is only about 80 GB but I've used it to store mp3.Many programs are installed in this drive also. Therefore, I do not have enough room for using with video editing.
Will getting external hard drive solve this problem for me?

Answer
Yes, but keep in mind that it may slow down the editing process.

The connection between your internal hard drive and the rest of the computer is much faster than a USB connection. Refreshing the video while editing may take longer but it's still doable.

You should consider getting an additional internal hard drive.

Right now you can get a 500GB SATA hard drive for $99.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148264

Also, you can get a $10 - $50 enclosure and turn any internal hard drive into an external hard drive.

How to transfer to the external hard drive that I bought the music, videos and pictures in my lap top?

Joshua H

I bought an external hard but I don't know how to use it to transfer my videos music and pictures . My lap top's hard drive is almost full and I want to transfer it to my external hard drive. Can somebody help me?

Answer
The drive will appear as a drive letter in Computer (ie: Drive E:, F:, or some other letter) within approximately 30 seconds of connecting and turning on the drive.
Often the AutoPlay window will appear within 30 seconds.
You can click on "Open Folder to View Files Using Windows Explorer" to open the drive letter, or on the drive letter in (My) Computer. When that window opens, the drive is functioning normally.
Then you can simply drag-and-drop data, or copy-and-paste data, into the drive to use it manually.

Toshiba 80 GB Portable Hard Drive Issue: Unallocated?
I was downloading a video to my portable hard drive when all of a sudden my computer froze, i waited a lil bit for it to response, but it didn't so i shut my computer off. When I turn on my computer my hard drive was not working, I went to Disk Management and my hard drive was UNALLOCATED, I then tryed to to initialized it, but it gave me an error # 45D@0200001A. I couldn't find anything on the internet that was help full, i downloaded Acronics, and a couple other soft wares that were supposed to help me with this, but they didn't. I have over 50GB of files ,pics, movie, and music. Is there any way I can get my files back, or if I can't get em back how can i get my hard drive to work again.

I KNOW I CAN'T GET MY FILES BACK WITH OUT SPENDING ALLOT OF MONEY ON SOFTWARE. IS THERE A WAY TO MAKE MY HARD DRIVE WORK AGAIN EVEN IF I DONT GET MY FILES BACK?

Answer
Unallocated HD space, it means your HD is no longer formated as to why or how this happened I don't know.

What you can do is run a windows install disk to format your HD to NTFS(the format that windows runs on)

as for your files sorry but they are gone bud unless your willing to take it to a lab for file recovery (big bucks)

Trying to get portable Hard Drive to work with USB car deck?

daonewithn

ok so i have a sony xplod CDX-GT540UI car deck with USB plug in, and i have A LOT of music (about 50Gbs) that i want to have in my car, i got a seagate 250GB portable hard drive that i formatted to FAT32 with Partition Magic and uploaded all my music to it and when i plug it in it works nicely --- BUT --- and heres the problem, it doesnt show all the music thats on it, i read on the instructions for the deck that it can have a total of 128 folders and 500 songs per folder. i have my music organized in folders per artist and i have 171 folders in total, theres no way that i could condense it any more without like putting 2 artists in the same folder which is out of the question because then it'll be impossible to find things.

i read on a forum that someone had partitioned their harddrive into 4 different primary partitions and had his artist folders spread over the 4 partitions, i tried splitting my HD to 2 partitions and split the music in half over each partition but when i plug in the HD to the car deck it says "NO MUSIC" I assume because its trying to show as 2 different drives as it would on a computer and it doesnt know what to do

so does anyone know of a way to have all my music show despite the limitation of only the 128 folder cap?

Answer
Maybe just make an "A" "B" "C" folder. Or get an ipod/ipod deck.

External hard drive on a network?

jonoeckley

I need to install a external harddrive on a network,
Can I connect it straight to the router, so it can run as a "seperate computer".
How would i go about doing this

Answer
I know of two options, there may be more.
1) Linksys WRT350N wifi router has a USB port on it and you can plug a usb disk into this and make it available on the network.
http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_Product_C2&childpagename=US%2FLayout&cid=1162354643512&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper
I am using this and it seems to work fine with a pocket drive, shows up as a Share on the network.

2) Western Digital makes a series of Ethernet based disks call World Book, here is one

I haven't tried this one but it looks interesting, they have several sizes

External hard drive that is also network capable?

Chubbz

I'm looking for a dependable external hard drive that can connect directly to my laptop directly by usb like a lot of external hard drive. But I would also like for it to be network capable. So I can connect it to my router and access it from there. So is there both a usb direct connect external hard drive with network capabilities? And if so what's a decent one to get? I'm looking for something more than 100 gb but not more than 500.

Answer
There are internet routers that you can plug hard drives into, like this one
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833124081

I'm pretty sure there's no such thing as a hard drive that plugs directly into the network, and if there is there's no demand, and i'll tell you why.

You can share any data that's plugged into your computer. If you're using windows, right click on a folder or hard drive, click sharing, and go from there. You can buy a normal external hd and just do that with it.

Only catch is, if you share your data on the network, anyone on your network can access it. That means that if you have wireless, you have to make sure it's secure. That means WPA encryption (not wep, definitely not open).

Go and get one of those.

Good rating = good drive. Easy.

Recommended External Hard Drive?

Michael

Does anyone recommend a specific external hard drive? I'm looking primarily at USB 3.0, 3-4 TB. Price range can be from $100-$200 but nothing more. Thunderbolt would be nice, but at the time I don't have a computer that has a Thunderbolt port so that's more of a down the road thing. Also, I will be using this with Windows 8 (no Mac). I don't have any specific type of files to be stored on this exHD, rather it's a catch-all for my documents, music, pictures, and videos.

I saw this not too long ago:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BFFQN3M/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

Looks like the reviews are decent, nothing fancy, nothing extremely bad.

Thanks in advance.

Answer
An external USB drive is an internal drive with a SATA/USB enclosure.
You cannot exactly know the internal until you buy it and only if you open it.
The one you show is cheap. It does have only a one year warranty and does not show the speed or cache level of the internal drive within. Only info is here:
http://www.seagate.com/external-hard-drives/desktop-hard-drives/expansion-hard-drive/?sku=STBV4000100
As a guess, it is this one, but it has a 2 year warranty:
http://pcpartpicker.com/part/seagate-internal-hard-drive-st4000dm000
Thunderbolt is for Mac Compatible drives, and the data interfacing is different. They cost more.
It would be an offshoot of ieee1394 Firewire.
Heat dissipation is an issue, as they don't have fans and air flow that you can work with in an internal drive setup.
This has a 2 year warranty and can get to Thunderbolt with an adapter

Best external hard drive?

Gwalla

I have a brand new MacBook pro i5 processor. I need an external hard drive to store my videos, photos, etc. What would be the best and fasted external hard drive?

Answer
Your "new" MBP is how new? Built since the end of February? (Retailers sometimes have stock for six months!) You ask about the drive, but that is only one link in the chain. You have to consider the case as well. The fastest HDD is slow through any USB connection. All MBPs have Firewire 800 connection which will leave USB in the dust.

For the HDD itself, go for 7200 RPM. Slower speed (such as the "green" drives) will be... you guessed it, slower.

Brands? I see another answer -- "stay away from... made in Asia". Let me look at this Western Digital HDD I have here -- easy to do since it is bad and tossed in a drawer-- It says "Made in Malaysia". I have two each of WD and Seagate in my desktop system. All have been perfect performers, but the Seagates have a bit better speed for some tasks. Almost any testing review will support my findings. That's why you pay 5-10 % more for Seagate. Most PCs have used the cheapest brands: Maxtor (awful, bought out by Seagate who just needed the factory-- nixed the brand, thank the gods) and WD. Apple used only Seagate until recent years. Now they use Samsung and Hitachi, both very reliable.

For the "newest of the new" MBP, use a drive case with Thunderbolt connection. That is the fastest local connection for an external HDD known to man. Cases with Thunderbolt are as yet quite rare, but expect the supply to boom in the next six months. For now, you can easily find a FW800 case, link below is an example. A case should be metal (aluminum usually). Plastic will hold in much more heat and that means shorter life for the drive.

My favorite case is the Macally at the link below. It looks a bit too cute (like a toy Mac Pro), but it has ports for USB 2.0, eSATA 3.0, FW400, and FW800. Has aluminum (aluminium if you speak British English) case for fast heat dissipation. I bought mine in Shanghai for US$59.

You will have two "good" choices for formatting the drive. "Mac OS Extended (journaled)" format can be used only with OS X, or with a Windows computer that has MacDrive software installed. NTFS format can be used with OS X if NTFS-3G or "SL-NTFS" (both free) or "NTFS for Mac" (not free) is installed. It can be used with any modern Windows computer. The NTFS-3G software can format any currently available size of drive (or partition) as NTFS. Some Windows formatting apps, such as the one in Win XP original edition, limit the partition size to 137GB.

There is a not-so-good format called FAT-32. It is slow with large drive volumes, and has a limit of 4GB for individual files. Some video files may be larger than 4GB. Various Windows format apps will have a 32GB limit for FAT partitions, but you can format any size partition FAT-32 with Disk Utility. For all these limits, just mark FAT-32 off your list ("cut the FAT"). Even Microsoft does not recommend it for any XP or later system.

Western Digital passport portable hard drive with MAC problem?

John

I put files onto the hard drive from my PC with Windows XP. When I plug it into my MacBook with the latest version of OS X, nothing happens. The light comes on but the hard drive doesnt spin and nothing comes up on the OS X desktop. How do I get this to work?

Answer
The drive is most likely formatted NTFS, which is a proprietary Microsoft format.

You can try using Disk Utility on the Mac to mount it, but even if it works it will be read-only.

If you need to move files back and forth from PC to Mac using this drive, you are better off reformatting it FAT32. Keep in mind though, that FAT32 only supports file sizes up to 4GB.

Does apple have an external hard drive for iPads?

Victoria B

Just wondering. I'm pretty new to apple iPads and I'm thinking of buying one. But I'm wondering how much gb I should get on it. I didn't want to get one with too much gb since its very expensive but I don't how much is just right so I thought maybe a hard drive could be the answer.

Answer
We recommend you to try the following links.

These drives should work well with your iPad.

can the ipad take over laptop?

Cam

What's the diference

Answer
The laptop can play better games, from low to demanding. Has bigger screen size, bigger hard drive. Most laptop have a better CPU, has more RAM/Memory. Has a disk drive.

Ipad: Light, small hard drive, not for anyone, can not play demanding games or flash games. Small size, very portable, no disk drive.

No the ipad never take over the laptop. Because not everybody likes the ipad. The laptop have many advantages over the ipad.

Answer
Buying a laptop hard drive or external/portable hard drive for someone who doens't have a great deal of knowledge could be confusing. I sincerely hope the information below will help you when deciding to buy a hard drive or portable hard drive, and will also save you some money and headaches.

ALWAYS CHECK IF THE HARD DRIVE COMES WITH THE ORIGINAL WARRANTY

Notebook 2.5" hard drives sold on eBay could either have the manufaturer's warranty, used, a new pull, sold as is, refurbished or white label. If your goal is to invest money on quality products, and mostly importantly, not be disappointed with your purchase, I would recommend you buy a product which comes with full manufacturer's warranty. What does this mean? Manufacturer's warranty starts from the date the hard drive was manufactured and NOT the day it was sold or used. Most hard drives and most manufacturers, including Toshiba, Hitachi and Fujitsu offer a 3-year warranty on the product, again from the day it was manufactured and NOT the day it was purchased. Seagate now offers a 5-year warranty on its 2.5" laptop hard drives.

WHICH BRAND SHOULD YOU CHOOSE?

Major brands are Fujitsu, Toshiba, Hitachi and Seagate. I personally think that the 4 companies provide excellent products. Based on my experience with the 2.5" hard drives, I think that Fujitsu's hard drives are the quietest (whisper quiet.) But again, whichever brand you choose might not matter that very much. All of the 4 companies I mentioned are really extremely reputable. It is perhaps a personal brand choice. Just make sure to pick a new product with the warranty.

DO YOU REALLY SAVE MONEY IF YOU DECIDE TO BUY A HARD DRIVE WITH NO WARRANTY?

Imagine buying a hard drive or portable hard drive without any warranty. Let's say the hard drive is really new and never used before. Remember, as I mentioned above, the hard drive warranty starts from the day it was manufactured and not sold. Imagine if for some reason or other, the hard drive fails within a short period of time. Now what? The seller is really not responsible at all, assuming that he/she stated everything part of the eBay listing. It is very understandable that the buyer might feel betrayed, but this is the reason why I am writing this guide. Saving a couple of dollars on a refurbished, white label, used, or as is hard drive, is perhaps not saving money at all. If the hard drive fails, you will end up losing all your money (unless there is some kind of warranty, either through the manufacturer or the seller.)

MAKE SURE TO CHECK WHETHER YOU NEED A SATA OR PATA HARD DRIVE

SATA is the next generation of portable 2.5" hard drives. SATA (Serial ATA) is the successor to the legacy Advanced Technology Attachment standard (ATA, also known as IDE). IDE is the older technology which was retroactively renamed Parallel ATA (PATA) to distinguish it from Serial ATA. Fujitsu has established itself as the leader in the 2.5" SATA hard disk drive space delivering the industryâs first 2.5" SATA hard disk drive in the world in January 2004. If you are replacing a hard drive, just make sure that you are getting the one you need. Check if the hard drive is either PATA or SATA.

Does an External/Portable Hard Disk is faster than a USB Flash Drive?

gethzkie

I have a huge collection of movies at least they are in DVD quality, but my laptop hard disk is getting full so i want to backup or transfer my collections, is it true that an External USB Hard Disk is faster than a USB Flash Drive? in generally...

Answer
yes
If you look at simple stats on buffer to platter transfer rates on hard drives, a typical rate is 780Mbs, and for USB its 480Mbs.

in some testing parameters there might be no diff between both. But yes i think you should go with the external hdd cause even the tranfer rate's are more than usb 2.0
& whether it is usb 2.0 or 3.0 you also get firewire ports in some hard disks and i dnt think usb 3.0 could even compare with it
and ya 1 more thing you need whole new set of pc for usb 3.0
cause the old 2.0 pc do not support usb 3.0

Toshiba CANVIO 1 TB,External (E05A100PBU3XW) Hard Drive only shows 698Gb available?

Babi

I got my Toshiba portable usb external hardd rive and on the box it says 1TB of memory yet when I plug it in its only showing 698gb available and on the back of the hard drive itself it says 750gb. What gives?

http://www.rakuten.com/prod/toshiba-canvio-e05a100pbu3xl-1-tb-external-hard-drive-usb-3-0-5400-rpm/217497995.html

Answer
I think you actually have a 750gb HD. Either they sent you the wrong model or you picked up the wrong model in the store.

So with a HD that advertises 750gb the actual size after formatting in Windows is 93% of that total or ~698gb. In other words you lose 7% of the advertised size (or 7gb per 100gb) because Windows looks at a HD differently then the manufacturer. The manufacturer's know this but like to inflate the size of the drive.

This is probably the type drive you have: http://www.rakuten.com/prod/toshiba-canvio-3-0-750gb-usb-3-0-2-0-portable-hard-drive-black/224614717.html

http://us.toshiba.com/computers/laptops/mini-notebook/NB500/NB505-N500BL

Please share any suggestions.
Thank you in advance. :-)

Answer
You provided none of your search parameters, or your requirements. Thus, it is difficult to advise you on which of these you should get.

But... whatever. Let's get to it.

Right off the bat, Acer is made more "cheaply" than Toshiba. Lower quality control standards and all that. Acer also uses less expensive component materials. So, if cared for equally, you could expect the Toshiba to last longer. Major point for Toshiba.

Price-wise, from the links you posted, either of the Toshiba products would be the way to go, as they are listed for less.

The Acers both have 11" screens, the Toshibas have 10". But... at that size screen, the 10" is just fine. So, being an inch larger in this case doesn't make a big difference. Another point for Toshiba.

The Acers have dual core 1.0ghz processors. The Toshibas have single core Hyperthreaded 1.66ghz processors. Since hyperthreaded processors act like dual core processors (not the same, but close) for what you will be able to be doing with the netbook, the processor in the Toshibas is actually the winner. Netbooks are not really made for multi-tasking, and if you need a machine to be multi-tasking on, you shouldn't be getting a netbook. So, for having the faster processor, the Toshibas win another point.

The Toshibas come with Windows 7 starter... so that's a strike against them.

The Toshibas come with only 1gb of Ram. Since they also come with Windows 7 starter edition, 1gb of Ram won't be all that bad. If you went so far as to downgrade the appearance to push Windows into Classic mode (making it look almost like Windows 2000) you'd get acceptable performance out of that 1gb of Ram. However, this reduced amount of Ram is a strike against them. I would contact Toshiba before the purchase (or at the time of purchase) to see if you could increase that to 2gb of Ram.

Three out of the four choices here have 250gb hard drives... so storage space is not a factor. The most expensive choice out of all of them has 4gb Ram and a 500gb hard drive. Might seem nice, but we are talking about a Netbook. Also, it is rather foolish to store ALL of your important documents, movies, music on the main hard drive of a laptop or netbook. It makes far more sense to have a smaller main hard drive, and a portable hard drive to keep your important information on. So, in my opinion, for this type of device, having a large hard drive to encourage you to store lots of information on is a strike against it. Not the Ram.... it's nice to see 4gb of Ram. But the 500gb drive is just unnecessary.

I examined the specifications for both of the Toshibas you listed... and it is interesting to note the differences. For example... there is absolutely no difference hardware-wise between the two. The more expensive of the two units... NB505-N508BL has "Toshiba Online Backup (30-day trial subscription), WildTangent Game Console, TOSHIBA App Place," while the less expensive one does not have that software. So... That is what the difference in price is all about. Those two are the same exact netbook otherwise.

So, if I had to recommend one of the 4... I would actually say you should purchase the least expensive of all of them... the NB505-N500BL at $245.99. What it doesn't come with software-wise, you won't miss. What you can do with it, you can do with the other offerings you listed. You just save yourself $100 or more by buying it. You can easily take that $100, and spend $80 of it for a 750gb portable hard drive for storing things like music and movies on http://www.walmart.com/ip/Western-Digital-My-Passport-Essential-750GB-USB-3.0-Portable-External-Hard-Drive/15779563

... or when you order it, get more Ram http://www.toshibadirect.com/td/b2c/findMemory.jsp?stt1=Laptop%20PCs&stt2=mini%20notebook&sttSeries=mini%20notebook^NB505&stt3=NB505-N500BL&src=EXPL&cm_mmc=explore-_-accessories-_-sku-_-NB500 it starts as low as $20 for 2gb.

Portable hard drives and xbox 360?

ScaryPanda

can you download themes and gamer pics on your computer and then put them on one of those little memory sticks that are like 8gb and then download them for your xbox and use them?

Answer
No. You can only transfer media (music, pictures, etc.) from your PC to 360. Games saves, demos, gamerpics, and any other game data cannot be saved or transferred via a flash or external drive. You can use a flash drive to transfer a background or wallpaper from your PC and set it as your 360 background, but it's not a whole theme.

Can sitting a computer on my hard drive damage it?

Robert

Hi I recently did something rather stupid I sat my large computer on my portable hard drive , my question can this corrupt the files on it or damage them in any way?

It was only sitting on half the hard drive for like 2 min, it's a powerless portable hard drive very small size of a persons hand, is powered by USB.

I have video files on the drive and I don't want them to be corrupted from having had the computer sit on the drive, so can this effect my files and if so how.

5 stars for best answer and if you can recommend a good hard drive scanning tool apart from scan disk that can scan for corrupted damaged files and bad sectors from external damage.

Thanks guys and Gals.

Answer
Hi there

2 things could happen in this situation: if the HDD was on and plugged in, it is technically possible for the pressure on the case to affect writing to the drive, though still unlikely. Second is if it was not connected and off, there should be no problems assuming there is no physical damage.

I'm going to assume it was on. I'd load the drive and attempt to access the video files, right away they should tell you if they are corrupted/unreadable.

It needs to be fast, light weight. lots of space, Sims 3 compatible, adobe suite compatible, great or decent graphics, it MUST have a USB hub. long battery life, 3+ hours, and it should not heat up to quickly or stay relatively cool to the touch. i currently have a dell INSPIRON15 (on of the originals before it got cool) and it pretty decent but heavy and it heats up. i am a serious multitask-er. and i think it time to trade up. and suggestions?

Answer
Asus has one option which you can consider and it comes under your budget of $600 with the price of $550. The reason of recommending this laptop is its almost same features which you are requiring from a laptop. And also it performs really as one of an actual user describes its Performance as commendable. Here is a complete review which you can see and it will help you:

http://www.amazon.com/review/R5ZANLYD4ZQ41/ref=cm_cr_pr_perm?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B009RUS452&linkCode=&nodeID=&tag=hawmekm-20

Also it has really good features which help you in performing every task which you have mentioned. It includes Intel Core i5 3317U 1.7 GHz and 6 GB DDR3 which is perfect for fast processing. It has storage with 750 GB 5400 rpm Hard Drive and 24 GB Solid-State Drive. It has good portable 15.6-Inch Screen with Intel GMA HD and Windows 8.

All of these features, good performance and good built comes in a package of $550. So I would recommend it to you among other good options. But if you want to see other laptops for comparison with it then here is a list of laptops which are best selling and also comes under your budget of $600:

Where can I buy a good portable hard drive?

Princess M

Looking for a portable external hard drive that's small and easy to carry. It would be great if it didn't need a power source, but I know most portable drives simply power via your computer anyway. The problem is that I need it to be compatible with both Mac and PC AND have a firewire interface. I'm looking for something with 300 to 500 GB. I'm not using it to back up my computer. I'm a film major, and I'm constantly using different computers at my school to transfer and edit footage along with my personal Macbook. I've been looking on sites like Newegg all day, and I can't seem to find a good deal that meets all of my requirements.

I kinda need it to meet all of these requirements:
firewire 800 interface (2 ports)
7200 rpm
16 MB cache
Mac and PC compatibility

Answer
The firewire requirement is the tough part. You'll likely have a hard time finding that, as you've discovered, and that won't change because the imminent introduction of USB 3.0 spells the death of firewire.

If you absolutely must have firewire, Google "firewire to usb adapter" and you'll turn up a bunch of those. Then you could buy a USB external drive, of which there are many, and connect to it via the adapter.

Are portable hard drives as fast as internal hard drives?

hard_mike9

im buying a laptop and it would be great if i could just install all my games on a portable hard drive so when i come home i can just plug it up to my baby and play away. if there not i guess ill wait till payday to shell out for a bigger internal hard drive.

Answer
It depends on model you have, some external hdds are faster than hdds in the laptop.

External HDD's - 5400 - 7200rpm
Laptop HDD's - 4200 - 5400 - 7200rpm
Tower Pc HDD'd - 7200 - 10 000 - 15 000rpm

But I don't think you'll be able to install any program, game etc in to your external HDD.
External drives are meant to store data.

Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 1TB Access is denied.?

Rattle

I have a 1.6TB Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex and when I plugged it in my cousin's Windows 7 Home Premium, it says "G: is not accessible. Access is denied." The portable hard drive however works fine on my Windows XP.

Any solutions?

Answer
1.6TB drive?? it should be a 2TB or 1TB drive.

the problem might be with either windows XP or the slot that you are plugging the drive into.

1, XP issue. some versions of windows have a restriction on the size of drive they can use, this might be the problem as to why your 1TB/2TB drive does not work on the windows XP machine, if there has never been any updates installed or service pack, it might not work, you may have to install all the windows updates and service packs to get the system upto date and read larger drives.

2, USB slot issue, there could be an issue with the USB slot, make sure that there is no dust in the slot and that it works, you can check if it works by plugging another USB device into it (like a mouse) and see if it works.

movie files losing data on external hard drive?

Pritesh

So I got a bunch of HD movies (4-16GB) each), and 400+ episodes of a show (300-400mb each) on my external hard drive (500gb), the issue I'm having is that after I copy the files from my PC to the HDD, a couple of weeks, or sometimes straight away, the files would 'lose' certain data or pieces. As in when I play the movie, it would play but show signs of data loss (picture not displayed correctly etc), I know this because I have the exact files on my PC hard drive and they play just fine.
This doesn't happen to every file, only certain ones...

I simply don't know what it can be, the three things I can think of is that the HDD is fake (well, not literally, thinking the manufacturer is rubbish - its made by zynet) and thus the loss of data, or the disk has become scratched and damaged or plugging the HDD in the usb in and out damages the data.

Any helpful tips? Should I just get a reliable HDD like seagate? I'm thinking an external powered one with 2TB

Answer
It does seem like the external drive has some kind of subtle corruption somewhere. It might just be in the file system, or it might be on the platter surface itself -- hard to estimate.

You can, if you feel you need to, open up the enclosure (under appropriate safeguards, such as anti-static protection) and determine what brand of drive is inside. Some are better than others.

The other possibility is that the drive is fine, but the enclosure's circuitry (often a USB-to-SATA bridge) has firmware with a bug on it (or has been corrupted by excessive heat, etc.) or will otherwise introduce subtle losses or corruption into the transferred data.

What you ought to do is this:

Clear the drive off (e.g. make sure you have a backup copy of the contents, and then clear it off. For best results (to ensure it's not a problem with the file system) go into the disk management for your computer, and select the external drive, deleting all of the partitions there. Then re-create the partition, selecting a decent file system (e.g. NTFS is more robust than FAT), and re-formatting that partition using the non-quick format.

Then do a surface scan on the drive. For a 500GB drive it'll take a long while, but it will tell you whether there are any bad sectors on the drive's platters. Bad sectors would imply deteriorating condition and eventual failure, so in that case you'd need to replace it.

If the drive formats ok, and has no bad sectors, try putting data back onto it, and then monitor it for any signs of data loss as you mentioned above.

You can purchase your own enclosures and drives nowadays -- often at a reduced cost as compared to buying a bundled enclosure-and-drive. For example, I have a 2.5" (laptop) 320GB SATA drive (Western Digital -- I trust no other, really) inside a StarTech 2.5" SATA enclosure. It works great for day-to-day use, but if you have any computers that use an eSATA interface it might make more sense to get an enclosure that has that connector -- much faster. My reason for the laptop-sized external drive is this: No need for a power cable, thus it's more portable.

Also, if you do get a 2TB drive, do some research to see if your OS and your enclosure treat it nicely and can handle the full size of the drive. I've got a feeling that the RAID controller I've been using nowadays is subtly corrupting the far (empty) end of my hard drive (which is a RAID 1 pair of 2TB drives), and I'm not sure that the files will stick around indefinitely. The last time I moved files around the drive by defragmenting, something got corrupted very, very slightly.

does that mean it works only on laptops and not normal desktops??? can i buy it for my desktop?? please advise

Answer
well, it does say "laptop: harddrive... putting two & two together, i'd think it was meant for a laptop... ever think of buying it and seeing if it works and if it doesn't send it back for a refund? Your best bet to avoid a confusing situation is to go look for a portable hard drive that either specifies it is only for a desktop or one that just states that it simpliy is just a portable hard drive.

HELP! I plugged in a portable hard drive into my xbox, and lost all my files!?

Dub5

I have a 300gb hard drive tht i store EVERYTHING on. i plugged it into my xbox through the usb port to put music onto my xbox. i went into setting on my xbox and "configured" my hard drive thinking it would allow me to put my files o my xbox. When I put it back in my computer all my files were gone. I tried un-configuring the hard drive into my xbox but that didnt work, please help!

Answer
geez, the xbox will only use up to 16gigs of any external hard drive , if there is anything on it and you place it into the usb slot it will ask you if you wish to config/format it - when you CONFIGURED the drive to the xbox, the xbox formated it, and erased all the files!!! so that the hard drive is now just a xbox external drive - even if it was a 1Tb hard drive the console will only use up to 16gig !!

you will have to connect it back into your computer and format it there! hope this helps

Help! Question about External vs Portable hard drive?

Its Me

I'm about to go to Staples and I desperately need the Anwers! community's help! I'm pretty knowledgable about software and internet stuff, but I'm totally dumb when it comes to hardware, so I need you to help me pick the best item for my needs. Here's my situation.

My computer: Dell Optiplex 755 PC with 74.4 GB harddrive and Windows XP.

I don't have (and don't want) a lap top, so the only way to move files from place to place is with a flash drive (I have a 16GB). I live half the year in one state and then the other half of the year in another state. I have a monitor at both places, so I have to take my harddrive tower back and forth with me. I also have my computer cram packed with photos and video (I'm a photographer/videographer) and though I back up everything on discs, I HATE having to go through all of those discs to find anything. I want to be able to keep a copy of all of that stuff on my computer for easy access, and to able to easily transport it all.

SO..... there are three things on sale at Staples that I believe might help and I need you guys to choose the BEST one for me (these are the only options so please don't recommend "better" things):

IOMEGA PRESTIGE 1TB External Hard Drive
[This has a very sleek and small casing - easy to move]

SEAGATE GOFLEX 500GB Portable Hard Drive

IOMEGA EGO 320GB Portable Hard Drive

Prices are irrellivant to me.

So, I know the 1TB is great, but it is an external hard drive... vs. the PORTABLE 500GB and 320GB hard drives. Is it better for me to have a portable or external?

OK... and second question.... do I just plug these in to my main hard drive tower with a USB or something? I mean, maybe the issue over external vs. portable is irrellivant if they are both easy-plug-in by USB because the external unit is easily portable. But I don't know about these things. Does the external unit have to internally wired into my main harddrive?

I'm so confused I do not know what to do..... and we are leaving in 25 minutes to go to Staples so it's now or never.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP!!!!!
Just to reinterate...
I have a DESK TOP - not a LAP TOP.

Answer
The portable is just smaller in size, with less capacity.

The external is often used for people with desktops whose computers don't really move. You can use them with laptops though.

Both accomplish the same thing though. And yes you attach them via USB.

That said, my vote is for the Seagate 500gb Portable HDD based on what I know of Seagate and its reputation.

reliability? Thumb Drive VS. External Hard Drive.?

Q. thumb drive is a san disk cruzer 16 and 32 GB external hard drive is not a desktop it is a portable seagate 500 GB and 1 TB

Answer
I would suggest External Hard Drive.

Sony External Hard Drive help!?

H. Al-hube

Today, I bought brand new metal rose pink 1TB Sony External Hard Drive (HD-E1), I connected it to USB drive to add some files, but when my AVG Internet Security 2012 and Microsoft Security Essentials 2012 scanned it automatically, both program showed that there is dangerous threats and "Password Protection Managere Setup" program (that's inside the drive) is infected by unknown virus Win32/DH{DAMANQ}.

I was shocked and quickly searched through the internet about this issue and looked for solution, but never found about infected brand new hard drive. on the back of the drive, there are Korean and Chinese Characters (Kanji) and it is also written "Made in Philippines", I never heard of fake Hard Drive, is it not Genuine?? or defected item?

PLEASE HELP!!!
I know that PC processor cannot handle two antivirus, installing two antivirus in in one system crashes the PC&laptops.

"Microsoft Security Essentials 2012" is one of the small program that included with "Windows Update", is it like "Windows Firewall" that comes installed in all the brand new PCs&laptops.

Answer
most likely it's a false positive, meaning you antivirus's heuristic algorithms find the program suspicious so it's flagging it as a virus when infact it may be safe. I wouldnt worry about it, just add to your antivirus except list.

or

if you are paranoid like me, create a new partition table, create a new partition, format the partition (non-quick). All data on the drive will be erased, including this flagged software.

Step 1:
Download Parted Magic (a portable linux Operating System), burn the iso file to a blank cd or dvd
Step 2:
Boot Parted Magic and open Gparted (Your computer must be set to boot from DVD/CD drive)
Step 3:
Select your external drive (assuming it shows up, parted magic may not support your drive)
Step 4:
Create new partition table (MSdos, selected by default), Create new primary Partition (NTFS)
Step 5:
Boot into your normal Operating sytem (window i'm assuming)
Step 6:
Go to "Computer" or in xp "My Computer" and right click on your external drive, choose format
use NTSF and disable the quick-format check box. This will take a long time.

Your drive has a new parition table, and has had all paritions (including hidden) erased and a new partition made, plus all old data wiped to prevent recovery using third party tools.

What computer technologies should I expect in 2012?

I want to buy a new gaming laptop for collage.I have this year an 1+ from high school and I am going to go in 2011-2012 in collage. I want a top gaming laptop of 3500-5500$
Will there be a new CPU, Graphic card, Ram that will be much faster then ?

Answer
This is sort of a pointless question.

Of course there will be new CPU's, new GPU's, faster and higher capacity RAM and hard drives. They are in a constant state of change, and new additions to each of those categories come out at least once a year, so you're looking at at least 2 generations better than what we have now.

But you might want to rethink your strategy, as a super powerful gaming laptop is not very portable and it's battery life will suck. And as a college student myself, you are going to want a laptop that you can take where ever you need, easily (both weight and size) and something that wont die in an hour. Come back to Yahoo Answers when you are ready to buy a gaming laptop, as any advice as to parts is pure speculation and will lead you astray.
