What to do with my external hard drive?

IDK!

Today I just got a Seagate Free Agent Go Flex Ultra Portable Hard drive (1 Tb). I have it plugged into a USB port on the back of my computer. My question is that, is it safe to leave it plugged in and powered all the time when my computer is running? (My computer does get shut down every night and may run from as little as none to 5 or 6 hours in a day). If it is indeed safe to leave it plugged in, should I do a "safely remove hardware function" before I go to shutdown or will it power down safely with the computer?

By the way I am running windows XP if that matters.
Thanks!

I've been using an external 1TB USB hard drive (Freeagent) on my desktop for well over a year. I leave it plugged in and active all of the time, and I rarely turn my computer off. I've had no problems with it. Use it mostly to store huge videos. Other good uses for one are as backup media and monster thumb drive.

Of course you'll get extra wear and tear on the drive if it spins all the time, but you might be able to adjust for that in your power saving settings in XP.

Have fun with it. They're really cool. :)

is a terra bit hard disk worth getting?

i have a 1TB simpletech [re]drive external hard drive. it was $89 when i got it at fry's electronics. its quite bulky and requires a secondary power source, making it not too portable. overall I its very reliable and the [re]drive design is very nice looking.

mine has been in use for about 6 months now, I have not hand a single problem with it. my main concern is some a$$hole stealing my drive rather than it breaking. It looks really nice (aluminum and bamboo finish) which makes it kind of a magnet for thieves.
so far its proven to be quite durable, it survived two accidental trips to the floor and half a dozen rides inside checked luggage on aircraft. I know luggage handlers have a tendency to roughly treat baggage, the drive works like new.
