Hi, I would like to buy a External Portable Hard drive with Windows 7 support. I have installed Windows 7 in my system and it should be able to recognize that external portable hard drive.
Specifications
Size : 500 GB
RPM : 7200 or greater

Externals are connected through USB cables / ports.. Win7 should have no problems recognizing an external drive the moment its switched on. (may take a moment to find a driver or read through the files on it.)

With computer running, connect USB cable first, then switch on external drive.

I have a dell ispiron 1545 laptop and its HD is failing. I want to get windows vista off of it or something and put it on a new HD but i dont know how. My first guess was to get windows 7 from the store and install it on a new drive but i don't have $190 to spend on 1 windows system that i can't refund. So what im asking is, Is there a way to basically put my OS on my portable HD for a bit and install it on the new Hard drive THEN upgrade to windows 7? i have linux so i could boot the computer long enough to get windows off external HD and install it to the system. I dunno....oh and btw i don't own the original set up discs because i bought this pc at a pawn shop. ANyway i just want to do this legally and not spend an arm and a leg can SOMEONE HELP ME!!!! plz....ill be your best friend????

No you cannot copy windows from one computer and put it on the other unless you use an image making software program. But if you do that, then both computers have to be completely identical IN EVERY WAY for that to work.

You're going to have to buy Windows. Because that is the only legal way to do this.

I want to buy a seagate expansion 1tb desktop hard drive from either play.com or amazon but on it says that the hard drive is compaitable with windows xp/vista. I now have windows vista but in the future if i upgrade windows 7 or the newest windows then, will it still be compaitble?????

It will work fine with Win7.
Look what the specs say :" Works with Windows Vista, Windows XP, or higher .
Higher meaning Win7 ;)

BTW, as an aside , for the larger drives you're better off with an external USB drive, like this one,
rather than a "portable" USB drive.
External comes with a separate power brick. The "portable" version only has the USB connection,
which may be convenient but requires 2 USB ports, because 1 port can't usually support the higher capacity drives.To avoid "popping" the USB ports ,go for the external version, like you did.

I am looking for a Portable External Hard Drive for my HP laptop. I need one that has at least 2tb of memory and is fast but affordable (preferably under $150) I'm looking for a good reliable brand too. I just don't know where to start. If it helps any I have Windows 7.

I have a 2.5 and a 3.0 TB for my two laptops from Western Digital and they have worked flawlessly. One of my laptops is Windows 7 and one is Windows 8. I don't work for Amazon (retired postal service) but I really like Amazon for deals. Check them out and do some searching. I think you will find what you need.

No I'm afraid not, VSE needs to be installed,it load a large number of DLL's and other tools in to the system directories and modifies the registry. You would be better off using eclipse and gcc which can both be configured to run without being installed.

I bought a verbatim usb Portable Hard Drive to store information on from my old pc with windows XP to my new pc with windows 7. I can not get the usb hard drive to show up on either pc. It shows a blue light on but otherwise it won't do anything.

a few possibilities:

A) it only has a usb cord, and it needs more power. Try a usb port on the back of the computer.

C) it's dead.

I got a freeagent goflex portable hard drive. I need it to work on both a mac and windows computer. It works on my windows computer but I need it to work on a mac computer at school so I need to format it. I was wondering can I format it at home on my windows 7 without having to do it at school?

Format it as MS-DOS (FAT) and it will work on both. Slow, but it will work.

I use this all of the time to copy back and forth between Mac and Windows machines.

Hey guys i'm wondering if its possible to boot a computer os off of a USB portable hard drive. Do you think i have to do any special formatting to make it boot through bios? Oh and what OS should i use? I have windows 7, vista and XP at my house. Can i copy from the computer running it? Thanks again

ya u can do that by using linux(ubuntu,fedora etc),windows versions have a lot of problems but u can try and u cant copy from the computer running it
