I own a Toshiba Satellite Pro 6100, which I am now selling because I just bought a new laptop. However, before I sell it I want to clean it up an make sure it runs smooth. I don't have a recovery cd, because I bought this laptop secondhand too. How can I clean up my files and make the laptop run faster again?

Thanks!

Answer
The simplest way to do what you want is pick up a recovery disk. Check eBay (http://cgi.ebay.com/Toshiba-Satellite-Pro-6100-Recovery-and-Drivers-CD_W0QQitemZ180250411588QQcategoryZ31534QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWINQ3aPOST0Q3aRECOQ3aBINQQcmdZViewItem) and, no, I am not selling this item so I won't profit from that link.)

Once you get that, back up all your personal information on a portable USB drive (they're easily available at WalMart, Target, Best Buy, etc. for around $60 - $100).

Then put in the recovery disk and run it. Follow the instructions for a complete recovery and you'll have a "brand new" system.

That's the best way to do things because you can be sure that you will not leave behind any personal information that you might not want to share with the new owner of the system.

If you don't want to do that, make sure that you still do the back up and then run through all of the options on your system to help make things work more smoothly (defragment the hard drive, check for errors, etc. - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/305781). Then try searching around (Yahoo, or Google) for ways to tweak your system that will help speed it up. One that I found quickly:

Next, make sure that you don't have spyware/adware/viruses plugging up the system.

After that, your system should be running relatively well and should be protected against further problems.
