What is the difference between potable drive and external hard drive?

Answer
A portable flash drive is a small USB stick connected to the PC that hold probably up to 64 GB of data.

An external hard disk drive is a hard drive like the one inside your PC except it is a smaller form factor like a notebook one optimized for portable usage. All power and data go to one or two cables depending on maker. These hard disk drives can probably hold up to 2 TB.

Hop this helps!

And if I want to back-up the contents on my internal hard drive, which would I need?
Is there certain cables i would need (USB etc) to connect either hard drive to my laptop?

Answer
Portable external hard drives are simply hard drives connected to the main computer by a USB plug. That way you can unplug them and take them with you. If you find a external drive you want, look on the box for package contents. If there is no USB cable listed, then you will need to buy one. Just make sure that the external drive is big enough (disk storage space) to hold all your back up information.
