How do I open my external hard drive on my laptop?

Im trying to open my external hard drive on my laptop so that I can put my downloaded music onto my ipod. My external hard drive was originally plugged into my desktop computer and now that I plugged it into my laptop I cant find it at all or open it. All its doing is making this weird beeping noise. What do I need to do so that I can use my external hard drive on my laptop?

i am planning on buyin a laptop but i do not know if it can be hooked up to an external hard drive as laptops general hold little hard drive space.

If the laptop is less than 5 years old, it should have a "USB PORT". Buy a hard drive that uses "USB".

3 things to thing about:
USB/FIREWIRE - if your laptop has a firewire port then you can buy a firewire hard drive. It's much, MUCH faster.

Powered/usb-powered - some hard drives are powered by wall electricity, those hard drives are much more efficient.

fan/no fan - some hard drives have internal fans (usually powered by wall electricity). It keeps the hard drive cool and makes it last much longer. Perferable if you choose this, get one that plugs into the wall.
