i have a macbook air 2011, and it only has a 64gb hard drive... i have 2x 1tb drives, connected to my router, and i wanted to know how to make my programs and files etc, automatically save onto the external hard drive? and iam using mac.... thanks!
ok i have found my macintosh hd and i have used 47gb... but time machine has an error... but i found the external hard drive on 'Finder' and dragged my mac hd into it... but it hasn't worked... plus, i thought time machine backed it up... so all of the programs would stay on my macbook air and be copied onto the external hd... also... macbook airs are so good... i can run COD 4 on FULL graphics, with basically no lag...!! zoo good

Answer
First, hope you're enjoying the new Air, I'll be getting one as soon as finances permit :-)

You'll have an app called TimeMachine included in the OSX Lion.

Here is what it does (taken from the Apple site, to save me writing my version!)

"Time Machine works with your Mac and an external hard drive (sold separately) or Time Capsule. Connect the drive, assign it to Time Machine, and start enjoying some peace of mind. Time Machine automatically backs up your entire Mac, including system files, applications, accounts, preferences, music, photos, movies, and documents. But what makes Time Machine different from other backup applications is that it not only keeps a spare copy of every file, it remembers how your system looked on any given day â so you can revisit your Mac as it appeared in the past."

Can I make my external hard drives stay on all the time?

Matt

I have 3 external hard drives connected to my computer (all Maxtor OneTouch) but if I haven't used them for a while, they seem to go into a power-saving mode or something. Then when I try to access a file, I have to wait for them to boot up, and it seems they do it sequentially, one at a time rather than all at the same time. Is there a way I can make them stay on all the time so I don't have to wait? Or alternatively, can I purchase a computer where I can install these three hard drives inside of a tower in addition to the hard drive that comes with the computer?

(2x Maxtor OneTouch Plus 1TB, 1x Maxtor OneTouch 750GB).

I've been reading articles from 5 years ago saying some guy named Michael Thomas has will be releasing a 1.2 petabyte hard drive around the year 2010 to 2011, but if you look at this website, it looks like a child made it. Has anyone heard news on this? http://colossalstorage.net/home_diskdrive.htm

Answer
Power saver mode is built into all Maxtor OneTouch drives. It means the drives will need a few seconds to spin up, but it saves electricity. It also helps keep the drives cool, extending their lives. AFAIK, it can't be changed unless Maxtor provides a hard drive utility that enables you to make adjustments.

Assuming your computer case has a sufficient number of available connections and drive bays inside the case, you could certainly install them there. This would probably bypass the circuitry and software responsible for power saver mode.
