What's the life expectancy for external hard drives and flash drives?

Currently, I own a 320 gb external hard drive that's 2 years old and a 1 tb external hard drive that's 1 year old. Both are by Seagate. Also, I own a variety of flash drives, 1 of which is a 1 gb flash drive that I got back in 2007 and it still works fine. I use my external hard drives 2-3 times a year for 30 minutes to 2 hours usually while I use my flash drives for numerous reasons. If I keep this pattern, how long should I expect them to last?

That is a good question, solid state devices have a life cycle and do ware out. MECHANICAL hard drives
do too, a good guess (by a tech) 5 or more years, like maybe 10 years... If you are lucky and get a small problem, it is best to take it out of service, as it may be going bad...

Playing games off of an external hard drive?

I recently purchased a dell mini netbook with a 30 gig solid state drive. could i take games such as baldurs gate icewind dales etc. and run them off the external hard drive without using much space?

USB2.0 even at high speed is slower than SATA so it is not worth it even if you had a solid state drive.
Unless you are using eSATA or internal SATA, forget it. -- It will be slower.
