In my price range there is:

Dell Mini 10v - Same price as the other two not including postage (have to buy online)

HP Mini Note 1109 (This one is in Australia so the postage may be "dangerous - i'm in NZ - will require fair bit of effort to get here)

HP Mini Note 1128 - Most convenient but has a SSD Hard Drive of 16GB - are they better?

I want it mainly for writing, like in class, or just in general (I write a lot) but I have a normal sized laptop for DVDs and stuff that is going to become an at home computer. I have a 320GB external hard drive as well, so I am not sure what exactly I need. These ones seem to have good keyboards (though I haven't tried Dells) and seem alright and are cheap. I am in NZ, so I don't really want people telling me about other laptops I can't buy, but if you can tell me about these specific netbooks that would be great.

Answer
well, hp and dell are two great companies and the 2 biggest computer manufacturers in the world... if you absolutely must have a tiny tablet laptop, i should say, don't get a ssd hard drive. you know the little usb flash memory drives, about the size of your thumb, that you can plug into your computer for portable data storage? those hold around 4-8 gigabytes of data. now, if you make a hard drive out of those, you get a ssd hard drive. 16 gigabytes is a very, very small hard drive. you could have bought a computer 10 years ago that had that hard drive size. what makes it different is the flash-drive based technology. it's just coming onto the market, and the benefits are: it's quieter on account of having no moving parts, it doesn't crash, it saves a chunk of battery life, and it reads data much, much faster. but with 16 gigabytes of hard drive memory, you won't be able to store much at all. when the technology becomes more affordable in the future, all computers will probably have ssd hard drives, but they're only an expensive option now- especially for a mini laptop.

i say buy the dell!

but considering you have a bigger laptop and will only use this one for general and writing use, then if the above description of the benefits of ssd drives appeals to you, go ahead and buy the hp if you want it. aside from the high-tech hard drive option, both computers are virtually the same.

Is this a good gaming laptop?

Okay so I am about to buy this laptop
http://www.ascent.co.nz/productspecification.aspx?ItemID=384990
for Uni study but will also want to play games on it. I know it is not up to alienware standards but from what I know about computers this will run very good games will it not? So I really want to know; What games can this run that are currently out (Crysis, Fallout3, Farcry2, Mass Effect2) and what detail levels (Eg above average, below average)
Also how long am I looking at before this is outdated (Can't run good games) 2-3 years? Or 6-12 months?
Lastly it doesn't say anywhere but you guys might know. Does it come with Windows 7 64 bit or 32 bit?

Many thanks Honos

Answer
For the Windows question, unless specified assume it's 32-bit, because that is the standard speed, in this case the processor native speed is 64 specified by the Intel website. While it has 4 GB's of RAM, which is a good deal that will last you some time, the processor is not that great. 1.6 GHz will show some lack when trying to run modern games. Also, you should note that the graphics card is so so. While it is 1024mb its not top of the line but it should do alright. You may be able to play Crysis but I wouldn't bother, the specs on this won't do it any justice, and to be honest I really don't know what it would look like so I would pass on that. Fallout is graphically intense, and while it should run it will def. be on low settings IMO, medium at best. Same for Far Cry. I don't know the suggested stats on Mass Effect 2, but Mass Effect 1 should run fine on it. In my opinion this is a surprisingly expensive Laptop and I feel like there may be better options for you money. While it does have a huge hard drive, I don't believe that that is necessary, and I'd rather chop that in half, in a quarter, and go the high speed external route just to keep the clutter off the portable laptop. A large hard drive like that will take forever to defragment.

With this computer you should be able to run with some success new games most likely for the next year or so. The processor worries me, but other than that it should be acceptable. This will probably be able to play games longer than that but you may begin to run into problems, and I'm not about to guess what kind of requirements games will have any further than a year.
