yesterday i downloaded from the toshiba website the touch pad driver for my laptop but i dont know what do to with the zip file or how to make it work so my touch pad is able to scroll up and down again. how do i fix this?

Answer
You have to open the zip file, save & run it.
If your computer is still in warranty and you have already registered it on-line before (support.toshiba.com), then call Toshiba's Tech Support hotline number (800-457-7777) for further technical assistance.
FYI, which ever country your call will be routed to, please be patient & polite to the person who will take your call. After all, you are the one calling them for assistance with whatever issue you are having with your portable computer. Make sure to speak your name clearly (spell it, if need be) & provide all the info needed & asked for. They are trained professionals for handling simple matters, so I believe they should be able to assist you w/ any issue as long as IT IS WITHIN THEIR SCOPE OF SUPPORT. It depends on the company but be cooperative because these phone technicians have a specific handle time to be able to resolve the issue of a caller, so please do not be a jerk. Listen carefully to their instructions & follow it, because IF YOU THINK YOU KNOW MORE, then WHY CALL FOR ASSISTANCE IN THE FIRST PLACE.
If your computer's 1-yr Standard Limited Warranty has ALREADY EXPIRED, don't expect too much. Ask them politely & talk to them in a friendly manner, for they are there to listen and PROVIDE YOU BASIC INFORMATION as much as they can.
Best time to call, after midnight Pacific Time.

Additional info, read on:
FYI: I always tell my customers, a laptop's battery is similar to a cell phone's. You charge it when it's depleted & you unplug the adapter when it is already fully charge (this will prevent the battery from getting overcharged & extend the life of the battery). So for less hassle, I always advice my customers to just remove the battery if they plan to use the computer for long hours straight (more than 1 hour) and just run it on AC power alone so as not to overcharge it & shorten the battery life.

FYI, laptop, as the name itself... well, I really don't use it on my lap b'coz sometimes our leg, the bed cover or some clothing may already be blocking the air vent without our knowledge.
Also, if your computer is running a lot of applications that means that the HDD (Hard Disc Drive) is moving very fast and any minute (small) movements of your legs creates vibrations inside (which we wont see from the outside) that causes damage to the HDD discs, and eventually in a long time (when the damage is too much and in some cases the HDD makes a sound) the hard drive will crash. So, if your laptop came with a HDD protection utility, just like what Toshiba and HP has, you can always lower down the sensitivity level to level 2 or 1 but never completely disable the protection utility to prevent the HDD from getting damage from the inside and use the computer on a stable surface. Now, like what I always tell my customers, to always create a restore point (every last day or first day of the month) and make sure that you constantly back-up any important pictures, documents or files from your HDD to a Flash Drive/Thumb Drive or writable DVD±R or an external HDD, so that you will not lose any of your pictures, music, files or important documents, just in case something bad happens.

As you know, dust is almost always in the air. The air vents needs checking from time to time for accumulated dust might have clogged in the air passage way within the laptop itself. Use a flash light to check in the air vents. If you feel no air coming out, then have the fan changed b'coz it's not working anymore. Check the bottom of your computer, it usually has rubber pads that provides ample space between the laptop case bottom and the table. For the computers that I have used, these rubber pads provide enough clearance for ventilation for the hot air though it's not enough. It never hurts to be cautious, so for my own laptop, I bought a $15 2-fan Cooler Master U2 Cooling Pad from MicroCenter to help flush away the heated air from the bottom air vents of my laptop. Cool thing about the Cooler Master U2 is that you can position the fans on the right spot for better ventialation. When travelling, if you detach the easily detacheable dual fan, you can use the aluminum frame as a protection for your laptop's LCD screen when inside the bag.

Can I format my HDD to another laptop?

Christophe

So, I had this laptop. Which BIOS has been locked and I can't format the Hard drive. It keeps restarting and restarting. If so, Can I format the laptop's HDD to my another laptop? Different brands? Acer and Toshiba. I can't find the CMOS battery on the laptop so I can't short circuit it. Thanks for the help!

Answer
you just open the cover of hard-drive and pull it out. then you can insert it to another laptop or on a PC .... if you want to use a PC to format it ... perhaps you need a portable hard disk drive cover with a USB cable then you can use it as an external hard disk.(because the connectors of PC and Laptop are not the same connectors) then it's the easiest part of job to format it.
after all you shall insert it to your laptop and close it's cover again .
it's very easy .... be sure.

Portable HD turns on,but can't be detected anywhere on my PC!?

Indian Hip

Hey there guys! I have a Toshiba 250 GB portable hard drive. When I connect it with a USB cable, the power light comes on,but there's no sign of it anywhere on the PC.Not in My computer, not in device manager, nor in the disk management section!

However, when I connect it,there's a small slight sound that comes like small clicks, and they keep going on like one click per second.

Any ideas :)?

Answer
Regular clicks like that normally means the drive has died, you will have to get another one, if you have a lot of information on the drive its probably gone, but you could try to give the HDD a firm tap, sometimes it gives enough time for you to open the drive and get some of the more important things off. Lift the drive up and listen to it can you hear the drive running or is it only the ticking noise.

Bad news sorry

My Toshiba laptop (4 mos old) had condensation on the screen and moisture beneath. Any ideas why?

The laptop almost exclusively sits on my desk on, but inactive with the screen closed unless I am using it. When I opened it there was condensation on the screen and something wet (clear, no oder) pooling beneath it, but I didn't spill anything on it, and neither did anyone else. Moisture can be seen in the crack around one of the compartments on the bottom, but I haven't got a small enough screwdriver to open it. Could this simply be overheating?

Answer
Most hard drives have a filtered port that bleeds air into and out of the head disk assembly (HDA) so that moisture can enter the drive; therefore, after some period of time, it must be assumed that the humidity inside any hard disk is similar to the humidity outside the drive. Humidity can become a serious problem if it is allowed to condenseâand especially if you power up the drive while this condensation is present. Most hard disk manufacturers have specified procedures for acclimating a hard drive to a new environment with different temperature and humidity ranges, especially for bringing a drive into a warmer environment in which condensation can form. This situation should be of special concern to users of laptop and portable systems. If you leave a portable system in an automobile trunk during the winter, for example, it could be catastrophic to bring the machine inside and power it up without allowing it time to acclimate to the temperature indoors.

What notebook would you recommend for running intensive applications?

Buddy

I primarily need a notebook...

... for intensive applications (Adobe Creative Suite 2 Premium, Dreamweaver, FrontPage, etc.)
... to store music, photos and videos (also, video editing)
... to play games
... to connect to networks (wired/wireless)

The notebook should have

... Lots of hard drive space for storing personal, business and multimedia files
... DVD burner
... plenty of memory (1 GB +) to run multiple intensive applications
... If possible, dedicated video memory - for video editing
... S-Video output for connection to a TV
... IEEE1394 (FireWire) so I can connect my camcorder
... Card reader so I can download photos from my camera
... Ethernet/wireless so I can connect to networks

Price: as cheap as possible

What do you recommend?

Answer
Apple MacBook Pro by far! The MacBook Pro has been updated with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, along with more RAM and hard drive storage. I have the top-of-the-line 17-inch model, a thing of beauty clad in sleek aluminum.

Still only one-inch thin, the MacBook Pro also remains one of the lightest notebooks and it does come with a 15.4-inch widescreen display. This 5.6-pound notebook is excellent for home or office use but is portable and compact enough to take on the road.

Using the MacBook Pro is a pleasure, and it didnât take me too long to fall in love with the 17 inch screen, whose optional glossy treatment is perfect for watching movies. The notebook comes with an infrared, six-button remote, so you can enjoy movies from across the room.

I like the MagSafe Power Adapter, which disconnects from the notebook if you trip over the cord. For this model, Apple added the MagSafe Airline Adapter, which uses the same concept but connects to an in-seat power port (a $59 option, not included). The MacBook Proâs illuminated keyboard and motion-sensor technology for protecting the hard drive help make this a solid pick for business travelers.

The big improvement is the upgrade from Intelâs 2.16-GHz Core Duo processor to a 2.33-GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. Like the previous CPU, the Core 2 Duo has two processing cores, but now each chip has 4MB of shared L2 cache. That cache allows the Core 2 Duo to store more data nearby so that it makes fewer passes to the main memory.

Speaking of memory, Appleâs computers have long been RAM weaklings, with standard configurations that paled next to their Windows counterparts, but Apple corrected that nicely. The 2.33-GHz 15-inch MacBook Pro comes with 2GB of 667-MHz DDR2 SDRAM standard, twice that of the previous version. I maxed out the system with 3GB of RAM, for an extra $575. Thatâs overkill for all but the most demanding power users like myself - I run my home network from it.

I downloaded the free Mac BootCamp, which enables Macs to run Windows XP. http://www.apple.com/macosx/bootcamp/

Productivity performance was decent. I suspect this may be due to the fact that Windows uses only a small partition of the MacBook Proâs hard drive (although you can set it to use more) and that Boot Camp itself has some performance overhead. BEWARE that using this now opens the MAC to the same malware attacks as the PC'ers are experiencing.

I ran MobileMark to test the battery life, the MacBook Proâs battery lasted 2 hours and 53 minutes with Wi-Fi off, compared with the average runtime of 3:41 for mainstream notebooks. I also ran a DVD rundown test and got 2 hours and 58 minutes with Wi-Fi on (compared with 3 hours and 5 minutes on the13.3-inch MacBook). Thatâs a decent runtime considering the larger size of this display, but the bottom line is that you should go with the slower (and cheaper) 2.16-GHz processor if you want more endurance.

Wireless antenna strength is supposed to no longer be a problem with Appleâs high-end notebooks, but I noticed a weaker signal with this MacBook Pro than with one of my other Mac's desktop in the same location. Compared with my Toshiba notebook, the MacBook Pro wasnât too far off with scores of 12.6 Mbps at 15 feet and 9.6 at 50 feet.
