I am planning on buying the Western Digital My Passport Essential 500GB Portable Hard Drive, but am confused about somethings. I want to know if you can just plug it in and begin to drag and drop stuff from my laptop on to this external hard drive. I have seen that you can, but some people say you have to do something about WD Smartware. Any ideas?

I have a Western Digital Passport. It's a portable hard drive.

I want to have all my files backed up on it form my computer.

-How do I update the portable hard drive with new files I put on my computer?

*Adding the new files one by one is too tedious. Replacing entire folders where the new files are in takes too long.

-How do those with portable hard drives address this?

Your backup software program would help you do that like the one Microsoft includes with their Vista but any software program would help you keep track. If you don't have a backup program try cnet.com for ones they recommend some are free go to their site type backup software in search space. Without on you would have to do it the hard way.
