portable hard drive versus external image

I was thinking something in the 500GB range with USB and FireWire 400/800, maybe with SATA. I'm currently running a PC, but I have been strongly considering an Apple/Mac as my next machine. I know PC/Mac use different formatting, but I'm not sure exactly what to look for. Any help would be appreciated!

Should be pretty easy - I'd look around www.newegg.com for external drive cases and then match up an internal hard disk at the size you are looking for.
For an external interface, I might stick with USB 2.0 since you seem to be on both platforms (Macs have Firewire, but many PCs do not). A version of SATA (called eSATA) is the ideal solution, but I don't know that any of the current Macs support that interface. Keep in mind, this is the external interface, your hard disk will most likely be a SATA drive.
Macs can actually read certain formatted PC hard disks (I think FAT32 and NTFS) but I believe there are limitations on getting a Mac to WRITE to an NTFS formatted drive.
If the drive doesn't NEED to be small, then I'd get an external chassis that can hold a 3.5 inch hard disk. You should look at hard disk spindle speeds of 5400 or (better yet) 7200 RPM since the external enclosure can run off a seperate power supply (wall-wort, power brick etc.). You'll see the best performance, get the most space, and optimize the cost versus size.
If you HAVE to have a really small portable drive, then I'd look at a pre-configured 2.5 inch version. I think Seagate has some nice drives that are USB 2.0 only, but are powered directly from the USB port. No power brick needed.
Remember, only in the case where you want to move the drive back and forth between Mac and PC do you need to have the correct formatting. If that's not the case, then just hook it up to whichever machine and re-format to whatever works best - you just won't be able to read the drive using the other platform.

Macbook pro 13 W/ Flatscreen versus Macbook pro 17?

Hey I am a web designer who travels to client locations to work with them on their sites. I am considering buying a Macbook Pro 13 inch (with 320 GB hard drive and 2.53 Ghz processor) and a 24 inch flat screen, or a 17inch Macbook Pro (500 gig hard drive and 2.8 Ghz processor). The first option is cheaper and more portable, but the second one offers bigger speed and faster processor. Any thoughts?

Although the 13" is more portable, the fact it has a smaller hard-drive means it will run out of space faster than the other model. You'll then need to buy an external drive for that one sooner - that detracts from the two benefits of getting it; it wont be as portable because of the external HD and it will cost more for the external.
