do portable hard drives save everything on the mac?

I have a 1tb portable hard drive and i'm planning to reset my macbook pro. i know that that icloud saves some things like music and photos, but can i place all of my documents and downloads onto the portable hard drive, then transfer it back once the computer is restored?

im looking at a Toshiba - Canvio Plus 1TB External USB 2.0 Portable Hard Drive but would like an outside opinion. Also, would i be able to download things from itunes on it?
i have a pc. also, how do i change where my itunes things download to?

They're all more or less the same and of course they can hold any type of files. If you have a mac though, you better make sure that the drive says "Mac Compatible" or you're screwed.

Yeah don't listen to me. I only used to work at Tiger Direct and had many people come back because their WD Passport drives didn't work with Macs even though I told them to get Passport Studios which were PC/Mac compatible. It's this guy who doesn't know a thing.

But hey, he's a level 2 and I'm a level 7 top contributor. Believe whoever you want.
