I know it is quite difficult to compare them (as people keep telling me), but can anyone give me some pros/cons of discs vs. memory sticks?
Thanks in advance :-)

Answer
Depends on what you are trying to accomplish. If you are looking to archive data that you do not really use but do not want to delete I would use discs. Memory sticks are cheap and a great way to bring data with you to use on another computer. If you are trying to clear space in an internal hard drive on a laptop or desktop but will still need to access this data often I would go with an external hard drive. The most important thing to remember is any storage method can fail at any time. Discs all of a sudden can't be read by the dvd drive. Hard drives and memory sticks can all of a sudden not be recognized by the computer. Back up what is truly important to you as much as you can. I have an extensive music collection that I have ripped from discs and spent much time changing information in property screens, adding lyrics and making it just the way I want it so it ends up in itunes cataloged just the way I want it. I have this music folder backed up in 4 different drives. The chances of all 4 drives failing at the same time is slim. Hope this helps. Good Luck.

Desktop Vs. Portable Hard Drive?

John W

I wanted to buy someone an external hard drive for Christmas, and i was looking at this one in particular:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8908621&st=External+Harddrive&lp=5&type=product&cp=1&id=1216424110187

I looked for more information on it and on their website, it was talking about desktop hard drives (which displayed the one i looked at) and then portable hard drives.

The person i'm buying it for is pretty good with computers, well better than that, and wanted to put windows, keeping her mac system on her mac laptop.

Now, i'm still clueless on most of this, or at least skeptical, so i wanted to know if you could even put a windows system on an external hard drive, and if you can't, well i was wondering if someone could fill me in on all that, and mostly i was wondering if there was any reason a desktop hard drive or a portable hard drive would have any reason to not be compatible with her mac laptop.

Summing Up:
Windows system on an external?
Desktop vs. Portable on a Mac Laptop?
Thanks

Answer
You cannot have a operating system on an external hard drive, also you cannot buy internal hard drives on Macs only external, you have to make sure its compatible with macs too regular external hard drives may not be compatible with macs
