What do I have to look for when I want to buy a portable hard drive?

I'm looking for hard drives right now, but don't really know how to choose. I don't know what the following things mean for example.

USB 2.0, FireWire 400, and FireWire 800 and the rpm. For example, 5400 RPM. No clue what that stuff all stand for and how to choose.

You can use any 7200-rpm NTFS File System..I use a old Maxtor..120-GB DiamondMAX..(USB 2.0)
..but I also use a External Capture Card...Product=ADS Tech/PYROa/v [API-558-EFS](Firewire-ieee1394)...I connect my Yellow-Vid(input)..and the Red-White-Audio(inputs)..and the PYROa/v converts to the Firewire---for computer up-port/..I use my Roxio 2010 software in Capture Application...and I get a DV-avi file...which I clean up in Movie Maker 6...then I use DVD Maker for a DVD-video/disk/...
I would suggest you have a Pentium D or better processor..I'm useing a E7500..with WIN 7 Home Premium..2-GBs..800-MHz RAM...then the Firewire INPUT..it works real good.
