How/What to reformat a 500GB toshiba external hard drive for my ps3?

I need to restore my ps3 and before I do, I need to save my data. I bought a 500GB toshiba external hard drive. When I plugged it in, nothing popped up and a friend said I might need to reformat it. But how? I've never formatted. Please help !

You will indeed need to reformat the drive. The type of formatting used on the drive currently is most likely NTFS, and you will have to reformat it using FAT32. Why? The PS3 won't recognize or use it unless it has been formatted FAT32. How do you do this? With your computer. Believe it or not, the Playstation community has multiple different posts on exactly how you would do this... IE the steps you would follow.

They have a range from plain USB to USB/ Firewire, USB and ESATA, and now some fully networkale ones.
