Portable External Hard Drive?

Help me find one, for my needs, please?

Requirements:
Bare minimum hard drive - 500gb. 1TB would be better, but mehh.
Size: relatively small, not extremely heavy or bulky. In other words, portable.
Password protection option.
Relatively fast transfer rate. I do not want to be waiting six hours for a few gb to transfer.
Easy to use, something like drag-and-drop or similar
Back-up software, so I can copy my harddrive contents to it in case of computer crashing emergency.
USB 2.0 powered only, since I don't want to plug into the wall and I don't have a firewire slot.
Price range - up to $150.

I was thinking a Toshiba one, since it might be best compatible with my Toshiba laptop?

Do you have a Best Buy or similar type of computer store where you can go look at them?

I would recommend looking at them in a store, and being able to talk to a knowledgeable sales person.
They would be better able to help you.
There is so many kinds / styles available, I would want to look at them all, and read the specifications on the box of the hard drive.

As for the back up- if you have much really important stuff on your computer, I would go with an
on-line back up, such as Carbonite.
I have a Carbonite back-up for mine, and it is great!!! It backs up my stuff automatically, every day.
An external hard drive for back up is good, but it still is a hard drive, and thus subject to crashing just like the internal hard drive in your computer.
Chances are slim, but you never know!

What is your opinion about Toshiba portable hard drives??? I wanted to buy one of Seagate or Western Digital ( Both 1TB 5400 rpm USB 3.0 and 2.0 compatible price 110 Euros *OFFER* ) but now i found a Toshiba Stor.e Basics it has the same specs but costs 80 Euros ( its OFFER too) which one should i prefer???

By the way Segate is the GoFlex model and WD is my passport essential model.

I try to decide the last 1 month if you have any sites that compare hard drives it would help too.

Everyone will have a different opinion based on some issue they had or heard of with a specific make or model.
Most of it just boils down to what works and is reliable.

What is best to store your files and pictures on?

I have a Toshiba 160 GB portable hard drive and the Lexar memory sticks. The hard drive hums when pluged in. Which one will last the test of time? I want to put copies of all my pictures and some important files in the safe deposit box.
hard drives have moving parts and memory sticks don't. why are they better?

I have a back up drive that is separate from my computer we store lots of pictures, personal information and copies of contracts and such, another way is to store it on a digital photo frame you can get a SD card as big as 4 GB to store like 3000 pictures on it, if you have more than that get several frames.

As far as your question about memory sticks versus hard drive, the hard drive will be better, it is more of a permanent storage solution that will hold more memory, easily accessible and under normal use will last longer than a memory stick.

OK I recently bought the above mentioned product (the 140 gig model). I accidently clicked "Safely Remove Hardware" and the Hard Drive deal was removed, I also have reason to believe that the computer got rid of the "Removable Disk" that was required to detect the Portable Hard Drive.

I've been purchasing a lotta music lately and I need to be able to store it on my Toshiba.

Anyone know what happened here and what to do?

Actually 'Safely Remove Hardware' is the safest way to remove the hard disk. It shouldn't cause any problems. Just reconnect the hard disk and the autoplay should pop up.

If that doesn't work then go to Start > type in autoplay and press enter. Then go to the bottom of the window and click on restore to default.

My dad will buy me a portable hard drive as a present this october, and he's telling me what brand do you like. he suggested toshiba or Transcend brand, because his friend said that those brands are not easy to be broken. Maybe you guys can suggest what's the best brand to buy between this two brands or other brands. Thank You
